    The saddest thing about a work of art like this is that your experiencing it for the first time only happens once. But the closest thing to recapturing that awe and magic is sharing in the experience of someone else watching it for the first time.

      I would disagree. Although I do agree that’s it is something special to watch it with someone you care about, and someone for the first time, for me, each time I rewatch it, it only gets better and with stronger emotions. For me, as I re-read the books and read a bunch of Tolkien’s other works and get more insight, and just as I age and mature more, then the trilogy becomes more emotional and heart-felt to me. Moments that I initially wouldn’t view/react emotionally to, now I do. The small and large moments alike become more poignant and resonate deeper than before. I’m glad I got introduced to LOTR and delved deeper into Tolkien’s legendarium, I wouldn’t trade the memories and experiences I’ve had throughout the years in order to watch it for the first time again; in my mind’s eye, LOTR ages like a fine wine.

    I got some happy news for you.
    When Sam's wife Rosie died, Sam joined Frodo in the Undying lands to live there alongside him until the end of their days.
    When Legolas was leaving for the Undying Lands, he invited Gimli (the first dwarf ever to go there), and they both sailed away together.
    After Aragorn's death, Arwen didn't suffer forever, instead, she died shortly after him (in perhaps a year if I remember)
    Pippin and Merry lived in Rohan, then Gondor and they were buried next to Aragorn.

      @@bilabong4257 I'm pretty sure going to the Undying Lands is basically just like going to heaven anyway. So when they left there they were just basically going up to what we would consider heaven while still in their mortal forms. If their mortal forms can die there or not doesn't matter too much, as their spirits will reside there as well.
      Also interesting of note, if a Wizard should "die" in Middle Earth their spirit would be transported back to the Undying Lands because the Wizards aren't mortals. This would have happened for Sarumon except he betrayed everyone when he joined Sauron, including those from the Undying Lands who sent the Wizards in the first place. So when Sarumon died his spirit was doomed to wander Middle Earth without form or purpose because he was denied reentry into the Undying Lands forever.

    In the book as Sam is sneaking around Mordor after the spider incident, he had to put on the ring to evade the orcs. Saying goodbye to Frodo is Tolkien saying to his friends with PTSD from WW1 that he understands that somethings can't be endured.

  • @Freshwater121
    @Freshwater121 3 роки тому +5

    Tolkien himself said that it would’ve been impossible for anyone, not just Frodo, to willing destroy the Ring at that point. But because Frodo had shown Gollum mercy and had took the Ring as far he conceivably could, he was rewarded by an almost divine intervention of Gollum tripping and accidentally destroying the Ring. One of the best conclusions to a story ever.

  • @VPortho
    @VPortho 3 роки тому +87

    Sauron's panic in the books when Frodo puts the Ring on: "The Dark Lord was suddenly aware of him, and his Eye piercing all shadows looked across the plain to the door that he had made; and the magnitude of his own folly was revealed to him in a blinding flash, and all the devices of his enemies were at last laid bare. Then his wrath blazed in consuming flame, but his fear rose like a vast black smoke to choke him. For he knew his deadly peril and the thread upon which his doom now hung."

      @PassingMaxQ 2 роки тому +3

      One of my favorite things about this story is that it never occurred to Sauron that people would try to destroy the ring. He was expecting them to use it and seek power, because that was all he understood.

    The ending is beautiful because Tolkien wanted people to experience the joy he never got. During WWI, all but one of his closest friends that he served with perished. The ending of ROTK was what he imagined they all would have done had they made it thru the horrors of that time. There's some really cool stuff in the thousands of personal letters he exchanged with fans of the series that really helps flesh out his ideas for the world of Middle Earth. Along with Unfinished Tales and The Silmarillion its fairly amazing how incredible that man's mind was.

    Definitely read the book. You'll be surprised how many other things you'll discover that aren't in the movie. That Denethor isn't as much of a jerk as in the movie, he's just manipulated by Sauron because Denethor had one of the Palantirs too. Sauron had an effect on him through this stone. Also, Saruman's fate is quite different from the movie - if Peter Jackson wanted to film it like the book, he would have needed to add two more hours to the movie. I don't want to spoil too much, but the return to the Shire is not as idyllic in the book.
    Otherwise, that chant that sounded like it came from a football stadium was actually recorded in a football stadium. At halftime break, they projected the words (like "Grond! Grond!") on a big screen and people shouted it and the sound guy recorded it.
    Another interesting fact - Peter Jackson is arachnophobic. He said he almost couldn't watch the filmed spider scenes.

    Now I can say this. From the time I read the books years ago I loved Eowyn - not as a love for Aragorn; but I fully understood her feelings of being trapped in a miserable existence for so long and being so wounded by it that for a while Aragorn seemed like the only light in her darkness. And yet she lost that. So all of her energy went into the battle. There was no way she could could stay home. And she was destined to perform heroic deeds. I like that she and Faramir found each other. There was of course more time spent on that in the book.

    edit: This series was basically the birth of modern fantasy, and you were right in saying most people typically copy some element of it in their writings. There is a lot of haters from people nowadays regarding Tolkien's work being "unrealistic" or "basic". Even George RR Martin said at one point he was going to write a better series than Tolkien did. He never will. The beauty of Tolkien is his belief in Virtue and Truth. There is good in this world, it is not all evil and grey like our modern story tellers like to show us.

    When Tolkien was asked who the main character of LOTR was, he said that for him it was Sam.
    Sam would eventually (when he got older) also sail to the Undying Lands, because he also carried a ring.
    Frodo sailed there because his injury when he was stabbed by the Nazgûl was too serious. He could not live with it in Middle-earth.
    When Eomer finds a half-dead Éowyn on the battlefield, he screams and cries because he didn't expect her there. He didn't know she had gone with them into battle. She is also seriously wounded, but the film does not explain this in any way. The point is that even through the stabbing, an evil force flows into the attacker. You can see it when Merry stabs WitchKing in the leg. He then grabs his arm because it hurts him. Similarly, Eowyn loses a good deal of her power when she kills WitchKing.

      Great points! I would only suggest that it is Frodo's mental anguish, perhaps akin to PTSD, that makes it impossible for Frodo to be whole and happy in the Shire as Sam, Merry, and Pippin become that requires Frodo's journey to the Undying lands for healing. I can imagine that Tolein carried the emotional scars of WWI all his life and knew of others who carried worse burdens so that makes sense to me. Probably the physical wounds got further tending too, but it was the emotional that needed healing the most.

    I think that lotr is a masterpiece and a monumental "sermon" against despair. It was evident in the contrast between Theoden and Denethor. Both lost their sons and heirs, they both face despair but in the opposite way, one rise proudly in the last battle, the other fall in despair, madness and ruin. Very interesting development.

      Solo una aclaración amigo, Gandalf si tiene permitido ir a Valinor, pero el resto incluido Galadriel, no les esta permitido. Intentare explicar lo mas breve posible. Galadriel es de la etnia elfo Noldor, los Noldor (no todos ojo) tienen un grave pecado encima pues son responsables de la matanza de muchos de la etnia elfica Teleri. Cuando los Noldor decidieron abandonar Valinor para regresar a la Tierra Media, el medio mas practico era tomar los barcos de los Teleri. Pero estos no accedieron y los Noldor se los quitaron a la fuerza, muchos elfos Teleri fueron asesinados aquí. Galadriel no participo en la matanza pero carga con parte de la responsabilidad por que sus familiares si participaron. Los Valar (En la mitología de Tolkien vienen a ser como los Argcangeles de Dios en la religión judeocristiana) decretaron por esto que aunque arrepentidos por lo ocurrido, no pueden regresar a Valinor y solo pueden quedarse en una isla, llamada Tol Eresea, que esta ubicada muy cerca a las costas del continente de Aman. (Donde Valinor esta ubicada). Aquí es donde moraron también Frodo y Bilbo hasta su muerte. Gandalf es un Maia que rinde explicaciones a los Valar por que fueron estos quienes le encomendaron la misión de ir a ayudar a la Tierra Media contra Sauron. Un Maia es un espíritu que esta por debajo de los Valar, así como primero los Arcangeles y después los Ángeles.Todos los detalles de esta historia esta descrita en el Silmarillion de Tolkien.

    A Tolkien le gustaba mucho expresar sus sentimientos en sus libros el final de El retorno del rey es una dedicatoria a los veteranos de guerra ya que al volver de la WW1 no se volvió a sentir como él mismo y no se sentía cómodo en su hogar, la manera en que se siente Frodo fue su forma de decirnos que él (Tolkien) nunca más se recuperó de la guerra y vivió toda su vida con esos traumas. También escribió un libro ambientado en la Tierra media llamado "Beren y Luthien" en la que tiene como objetivo decirle a su esposa cuánto la ama y cuan importante es para él.

If you can, watch the behind the scenes for these movies; they're as good as the films are and the actors all became real friends as they made the films. In a letter from Tolkien, he talks about what would have happened if Gollum had not allowed himself to be overcome by the ring, he says that he would sacrifice himself for Frodo, taking the ring and throwing himself into the lava.(Fun fact in the book, Gollum after taking Frodo's ring, jumps for joy and in one of those jumps he slips and falls into the lava and that is why the ring is destroyed xd)

    I know what you mean about GOT trauma. Honestly I credit GOT for me enjoying LOTR so much to this day. I fell in love with LOTR over 20 years ago, but as everyone copied the Tolkien formula, the "magic" did fade a little bit.
    Then modern TV like GOT, The Walking Dead, etc. started having all these horrible things happen all the time in their shows. Makes you really appreciate a happy ending. It's good to cry out of happiness rather than horror (the Red Wedding, "Just look at the flowers", etc.)
    As Gandalf said, not all tears have to be evil. ♥️

    Somebody's probably already mentioned it, but something that didn't make it in the movies was that, in the books, the Hobbits return to the Shire to find that it has been taken over by Saruman (who didn't die) and his men, under another name. The Hobbits are able to lead their people to force them out, and it's a nice little showing of how they've grown from their experiences and can take on the troubles of the world themselves. It's probably the right choice not to include it, because it'd be a strange ending footnote to the shorter movie and would ruin the flow after the coronation on screen, but it's an interesting way that the actual book concludes.

    It has been years and years, countless viewing of the trilogy, but everytime I reach the end and Frodo turning to Sam for their final embrace, with Sam's heartbroken face and the music of the fellowship starting to run, I lose it. Every. single. time. You summarize it so well Pilar: their friendship is eternal. And not only Frodo leaves the Middle Earth to find comfort and peace, he brings to the Undying Lands his eternal bond to Sam to leave and stay forever. Frodo leaves the Lord of the Rings story to the Middle Earth, the story of their friendship which destroyed the Ring and evil. There is just so much to say about that story. How when coming back home noone can understand what they have been through, the horrors they have seen, as nothing in the every day life compares. I will just say this again: this is the experience that Tolkien got from coming back home after being wounded in the trenches in France in 1st world war. He had seen the butchery which was the war in 1916 and he came back forever wounded, a wound that can never leave him, just like Frodo by the blade of the Witch King of Angmar. The Lord of the Rings writing is a catharsis for him just like it is for Frodo. Thank you so much for your reactions to the movies Pilar, this was beautiful, I have been so happy to watch them just like the first time thank to you and your love for the story being told.

    I remember when the final part of this film (its not a trilogy) came out me and my wife went to the cinema to see it as part of a special showing where the first two parts were shown first, we were in the cinema for about 11 hours or so. I read The Hobbit when 8-9 and LoTR straight after (and every year for 4 or 5 more years) and was very happy when a brilliant film version came to the cinema in 1978 when I was 11. Like many I always hoped for a longer version of the film which Peter Jackson provided us with. There was also a brilliant 13 hour long BBC radio version in 1981 where Ian holm who played Bilbo in this film(s) played Frodo in the radio version.

    in the theatrical cut we didn't get that exchange between the mouth of sauron so when aragorn goes for frodo it's implied/believed that frodo is alive and we're all just buying time till he succeeds. In the extended version our characters are given that shocking revelation that Frodo's dead and it was all in vain, bc why else would something that made sure he didn't die from a direct stab from a spear by a cave troll be off his body? Why would the enemy have it, frodo wouldn't have taken it off etc etc. You see the characters break slightly gandalf in tears in his eyes, merry n pippin losing it saying frodos name, of course the slight head turn the the mouth realizes oh that's his name frodo. and aragorn just lops his head off saying he doesn't believe and he can't believe it. Uhhh the for frodo hits harder bc all evidence points to frodo being dead so they're literally fighting to meet their end and what a glorious end it will be. I love it so much.
    Also can we acknowedge gimli and legolas friendship growth through out the trilogy like wow. Literally a friendship that will last a lifetime.
