    Mithrandir is an elven nickname that was given to Gandalf when he was Gandalf the Grey. It means "grey wanderer." The soldiers of Gondor are calling Gandalf by this elven nickname. In a way it both shows respect and familiarity.

    10:43 Oh, boy, Legolas is *definitely* familiar with alcohol. It's actually a plot point in The Hobbit book that the Elven King of Mirkwood (Legolas's father) imports a particular wine from the land of Dorwinion that is much more potent than ordinary booze. The King's steward and captain of the guard decide to sample it and it's so strong that it puts them to sleep. So... Legolas's level of alcohol tolerance is really not surprising at all!

    The easy thing to miss about Éowyn wanting to go to war with the rest of the Riders is that in doing so she is leaving the remaining Rohirrim (the civilians) essentially leaderless. With both Théoden the King and Éomer his heir riding to war, who is left to rule? Who would lead the Rohirrim should the two of them fall in battle? Éowyn.
    It's made much more explicit in the books that her obsession with achieving glory in battle was partly due to the poisonous words of Wormtongue. There are many, many more ways to find honor than dying in battle, but by this point Éowyn didn't see them anymore. She fell victim to despair.

    • @PrimeCircuit
      @PrimeCircuit 3 роки тому +4

      Her reasons to ride with the Rohirim were rather selfish for sure. She clearly had to learn that for the rulers it is not about what they want but what the people need. But since she is being appointed Theoden's successor, maybe it is good she made her name on the battle field at least once. Her becoming a respected and experienced leader might help her prevent wars in the future. It does not seem like she enjoyed fighting enough to make it her occupation.

    • @LadyOndyne
      @LadyOndyne 2 роки тому +1

      @@PrimeCircuit No. In the books is made very clear. A good leader for security is NOT a warrior, but a healer. Aragorn is recognised not for his deeds in battle but because he went in disguise to heal the wounded after the battle. "The hands of a king are the hands of a healer."
      She needed not to fight. That is why I love SO much Eowyn and Faramir's characters. In them is the essence of Tolkien's philosofy of war.

    • @PrimeCircuit
      @PrimeCircuit 2 роки тому

      @@LadyOndyne What I meant is that seeing the actual horror of the battle (which she wanted to claim as a "right to fight" rather than the duty it is for the men), served as a deterrent to rid her of that notion of glory in battle. I like Eomer's stance on this, the province of men it is not because they want it, but because they have the responsibility to defend. He does not enjoy it, he is merely good at it. Eowyn defied her King's orders, thought caring for those left behind was beneath her and was frustrated for herself, while she did not care how young boys were put on the frontline against their will. She went in because she wanted to make a name for herself and I certainly hope she came out sobered.

    You asked why sometimes they call Gandalf "Mithrandir." Gandalf is what northern Men call him, but Elves call him Mithrandir, which means the Grey Pilgrim or Grey Wanderer in Sindarin, one of the Elvish languages. Men of Numenor, such as Aragorn, and the Men of Gondor, often speak Sindarin or even Quenya, the "Elvish Latin," because of their millennia-long association with the Elves.

    When Elrond delivers the sword, you can see Aragorn's last doubts about his inheritance. But the sentence in elvish is a quote from Aragorn's mother. I think this sentence was the last spark to convince Aragorn. Here is the background knowledge from the books: Aragorn was raised in Rivendell, as all Chieftains of the Dunedain, the line of the kings of Arthedain and the last descendants of Isildur, were, ever since the end of the North Kingdom of Arnor. His given name was Estel, which means "hope" in Quenya. It was said that his mother, Gilraen, knew some of his destiny, as she had the gift of foresight. When Elrond revealed his true name and lineage to him, Aragorn was to set out into the world to fight Sauron's evil for many decades. When he came to bid farewell to his mother, her last words to him were the same words they spoke now :
    Onen i-estel Edain. U-chebin estel anim.
    "I give hope (Estel, her son) to men. I keep none for myself."

    Tolkien was a devout Christian and many of the themes in this story reflect that -- resurrection, repentance and salvation, sacrifice, a hidden king returning. He was influential in the conversion of CS Lewis and the two of them were members of a writers group called The Inklings that met in an Oxford pub, The Eagle and the Child, that is still there. You can sit at their table and have a pint since you are no so far away. They would read passages from LOTR and Narnia to each other.

    The beacon scene could be inspired by the real life usage of these beacons by the English, which they used on the south coast of England to warn the coming of the Spanish Armada. When they were spotted, these beacons were lit along the coast, and those in charge were warned that the Armada had come.

    I love how ROTK starts with Gollum's backstory, because it shows what's at stake for Frodo. For Middle Earth, we know that if the ring is not destroyed, the lands will be conquered, evil wins, apocalypse so on and so forth. But for Frodo, his personal fear is becoming Gollum. So witnessing Smeagol becoming Gollum is to see Frodo's fear of what he might become, that's why he keeps wanting to believe Smeagol/Gollum is good.
    That Andy Serkis gets to show his actual face is a bonus. I think he's playing Alfred in the new Batman movie, right? That and the new Jim Gordon are the two things I look forward to.

      I always thought that instead of having Aragorn use an ordinary Ranger sword for most of the trilogy, Peter Jackson should have let Aragorn use Orcrist, the goblin cleaver, the sword of Thorin, until he gets Narsil, reforged as Anduril at the end. It's not like Thorin needed it.

    27:05 Gandalf is VERY old and has been around for quite some time (we're talking several thousand years) so he's known by many names:
    -He's known as Gandalf by the NorthMen of Middle Earth (meaning "elf with a staff")
    - Mithrandir is the name used by the Elves and the Men of Gondor (meaning "The Grey Pilgrim")
    -Tharkûn is the name used by the Dwarves (meaning "Staffed Man")
    - Incánus is the name used by the Men of the South (meaning unknown)
    -Olórin is the name he used in his youth in Valinòr, the mithical land where the Maia and Vala resides, where the elves go back to when they leave middle earth (meaning "the one who suggest dreams" or "The Dreamer")

    Don't see much trivia yet, so I'll go: at 29:18 when Pippin starts to sing, that is an actual song from the books, but it had no melody. So the actor of Pippin, Billy Boyd, created the melody and has co-writing credit for the song.
    Oh, and technically Arwen and Aragorn are VERY long distance cousins. Lord Elrond's brother (Elros) is forefather of the Dunedain, of which Aragorn is a descendant. That is why he is able to live to 200 in the books.

With no supernatural force behind her, her fate is tied to Middle Earth. If things are saved, she can live out her *very* long life but die a mortal death in peace, like any human.

    Some backstory about Denethor and how he became the man we see in the films:
    His beloved wife, Finduilas, died young. Quotes from the Appendices:
    "After [Finduilas'] death Denethor became more grim and silent than before, and would sit long alone in his tower deep in thought, foreseeing that the assault of Mordor would come in his time. It was afterwards believed that needing knowledge, but being proud, and trusting in his own strength of will, he dared to look in the palantír of the White Tower."
    "In this way Denethor gained his great knowledge of things that passed in his realm, and far beyond his borders, at which men marvelled; but he bought the knowledge dearly, being aged before his time by his contest with the will of Sauron. Thus pride increased in Denethor together with despair, until he saw in all the deeds of that time only a single combat between the Lord of the White Tower and the Lord of the Barad-dûr, and mistrusted all others who resisted Sauron, unless they served himself alone."

    • @livinginlux
      @livinginlux 3 роки тому +1

      So Denethor actually "wrestled with Sauron in thought" night after night over the course of many years. You see in the film how even Aragorn is hardly able to use the Seeing Stone for a few seconds. Denethor sadly was manipulated by Sauron into seeing only things that made the situation seem hopeless. Sauron seeded a narrative of despair in Denethor, and when Boromir died, and the Ring had been forfeited, his hopelessness was complete and his mind broke. Denethor is indeed a "noble man" as Boromir first describes him which makes his fall even more tragic.

    Hi there! I really like the passion with wich you watch these films! :)
    Because you said you were interested in the lore I will try to add something:
    The true tragedy of Arwen's decision lies in the different natures of Humankind and Elves. The latter are bound to the world Ea, the plain which contains Middle Earth. When they die or get weary of the world they travel to the Halls of the Dead with the (kind of) gods, but the spirits of humans leave the world, and the Elves and maybe even said gods don't know where they go. So Arwen staying and choosing mortality means that even after her death she won't see her father ever again, which of course is a devastating thought for Elrond.

    Mithrandir significa peregrino gris y es como lo llamaban en Gondor. Lo único que te voy a decir es que aunque veas que en la película el rey brujo rompe la vara de Gandalf, en el libro el único que podría vencerle era Sauron. Lo incluyeron en la peli solo para darle más drama.

    Mithrandir es como lo llamaban los elfos Gandalf es el nombre que le dan entre los hombres, lee sobre los Istari en esta pelicula solo salen dos de los cinco, Saruman el Blanco que era el de mayor rango y Gandalf el Gris que ya aquí paso a ser Blanco cuando revivió.

    Gandalf has been around for many generations (500 generations he said in the movie, 2000 years according to books) and traveled quite a lot and helped people and kingdoms. They all gave him a unique name, that is why some people call him Gandalf or Mithrandir (Grey Pilgrim in elvish), etc. His real malar name is Olórin.
    You sure have some funny reactions regarding Aragorn 😄 I'm happy you could solve the upload issue, can't wait to watch all 3 episodes and practice my spanish with your help (:
