The opening sequence of the landing is important for average people to watch (well the whole movie really), so they know what war is; then they can make an informed decision about asking their leaders to lead their nation to war over something; and what it really means.

I get what you're saying but people know what war is. It's been going on since the beginning of our time. We usually just choose to ignore the brutal details that don't have bearing on our daily lives for mental health reasons. Until, of course, it's presented to us through entertainment. This way we can always fall back on the notion, it's just a movie. Also, this was a draft situation where the people didn't have much of a choice but to fight for their lives against absolute power.

It's not like you can "vote" for launching a war, most of the time it just happens spontaneously, nor is it always a matter of a couple of politicians taking the choice on their own. War and violence are as natural as sex, hunger, death, illness and wildlife, our dogmatic beliefs based on fear make us denied that reality, but you see, everybody condemns war and yet the world is full of it.

    Actually Pilar,
Can you not think of a more noble reason to Save Private Ryan? To minimize the loss of a mother who has just experienced the loss of three of her sons in one fell swoop? Frankly it makes sense to me that this mission has a simple objective.

    • @donvee2000

Exactly.... The soldiers seem to think their life is not as important. But what about the mother who has laid three of her sons on the alter of freedom.

The Omaha Beach invasion scenes were done as historically accurately as possible. In real life, 75% of the first wave were KIA and many of the rest were WIA. If you are ever able to visit the Normandy beaches then be there for low tide (like for the invasion) and walk out to the water's edge. Then look back at the coast. I have no idea how anyone made it off that beach alive.
The rest of the film was also done as accurately as possible to reflect the situation in the first week after the invasion. However, there was no mission involving a squad being dispatched to save someone like Private Ryan. That part is fiction. What would have happened in real life was the soldier's unit would have been notified to have the soldier in question sent back to the USA as soon as he was located.

"Earn it" podría ser traducido como "Merecelo". Antes de expirar, Miller le dice a Ryan "Merecelo" , Merece el sacrificio de nosotros, que no hayamos dado la vida por un patán. You must have been well aware this was going to be hard to watch with its graphic battle scenes so bravo! I didn't want to see 'that man's guts' either. As usual you anticipated the action very well but just like me the twist ending had you fooled. Your final remarks were as thoughtful and profound as usual. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark was his favorite. I think he would be most pleased with this film and tickled since Steven Spielberg directed it.

Saving Private Ryan changed the way that war movies were made. Prior to this most of them didn't show the violence in such a realistic and sustained way. And even since then there's really only a handful of war movies that can match what Saving Private Ryan did. Those are Black Hawk Down (2001), We Were Soldiers (2002), and Lone Survivor (2013)
all three of which I very highly recommend

I really enjoy your opinions on the cinematography. I haven't seen "Saving Private Ryan" yet, so I didn't realize there were beautiful shots like the scene with the lightning. If you haven't watched "1917," I totally recommend it: without giving much away, there's a sequence in a burning city, and the whole picture is soaked in oranges and golds -- so different from many war films where the colors are all muted. It also doesn't hurt that there are a lot of handsome actors in it lol 😅

The problem with the depiction of violence, especially in a realistic context, is when it sanitized, when something which was, or should be horrifying and terrible is depicted in a way which reduces that horror and terror. This leads people to thinking that it is not "that bad", that they can send people, or go themselves and it won't be what it actually is. War is the most horrifying cauldron of pain and suffering that humans can instigate, inflict on each other and endure. It should not be necessary, sometimes it is, but it should never, ever be forgotten or sanitized, it is that horror, and every person involved should deeply regret it's necessity, everyone should do everything to avoid it. Perhaps then we wouldn't actually have it, because too many people seem to think that ultimately small things and minor issues are worthy of some level of horror which approaches the depiction in this film.

Saving Private Ryan is not based on the Sullivan brothers. Fritz Niland became the basis for Private Ryan. He was dropped behind enemy lines on D-Day and spent five days in the French countryside, eventually earning a Bronze star in combat for taking a French. Robert Rodat first came up with the plot in 1994 when he saw a monument in a cemetery in Tonawanda, New York. The monument was to the Niland Brothers - 4 young American men who fought in the Second World War. When three of the Nilands were reported killed, the surviving brother - Fritz - was sent home. This inspired Rodat to write his movie. The average age of a U. S. troops armed forces personnel during WW II was 26 years old. Selective Service draft age range was 18 years of age to 45 years. The average age in Vietnam War was 22, not 19 as any think.
There are 26 military cemeteries across Normandy, but the most famous and visited site is the poignant Normandy American Cemetery in Colleville-sur-Mer. The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in France is located in Colleville-sur-Mer, on the site of the temporary American St. Laurent Cemetery, established by the U.S. First Army on June 8, 1944 as the first American cemetery on European soil in World War II. The cemetery site, at the north end of its half mile access road, covers 172.5 acres and contains the graves of 9,387 of our military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the D-Day landings and ensuing operations. In real life with the Nilands, it actually turned out later that another of the brothers was alive - he’d been held captive in a Burmese POW camp.Attempts to point out the "discrepancies" between the stories of Fritz Niland and James Ryan are often misguided, as Ryan is only based on Niland, and is not meant to be (or claimed to be) a completely accurate representation of him. The differences in the two stories seem to stem in part from the fact that the true story of Sergeant Niland and his brothers is often reported inaccurately. The character of Private James Ryan is a mixture of fact and fiction, with some of the fictional elements coming from the erroneous stories about the Niland brothers.
The German credited as "Steamboat Willie" who was released by Capt. Miller is not the German who engaged and killed Pvt Stanley "Fish Mellish during hand-to-hand combat. "Steamboat Willie" was in the Heer (Army) of the Wehrmacht and the other was in the Waffen SS which was a paramilitary organization and not part of the Wehrmacht. Originally, the SS uniform differed from the Wehrmacht uniform-whereas the regular army wore field grey, the SS wore black, head to toe (although later the SS did adopt field grey and often wore camouflage pattern uniform. American troops were brown and they didn't wear jackboots. The lightning bolt SS insignia can be seen on the right collar lapel of the German as he passes Upham and reaches the bottom of the staircase.During the Battle at Ramelle, Upham became shell shocked and was unable to save a .30 cal team from a German soldier because he was too frozen with fear to do anything about it. He carried all the .30 caliber ammo at the battle of Ramelle, but was unable to do his job because he was always either pinned down or too afraid to move.He signified the loss of innocence in war and thought that soldiers could be civil, but he later succumbed to the evils of war and made up for his cowardice when he shot Steamboat Willie for killing Miller even after the latter had shown Willie mercy earlier.
Not only did Upham represent the loss of innocence of war but he also symbolized the "Every-man". His illusion of neutrality faded when he finally had to pick and side and kill Steamboat Willie, his character revelation being how he finally understood the horrors of war. It became clear that Upham had turned into a hardened and true soldier because of the whole experience. Upham's rank was Tech 5 Corporal (E-5), that meant he was technician in a specialty area. His was maps and translator, he was not a combat infantryman and was never trained for front-line duty. Gunnery Sergent Hartman explained it this way in the movie Full Metal Jacket: "It is your killer instinct which must be harnessed if you expect to survive in combat. Your rifle is only a tool. It is a hard heart that kills. If your killer instincts are not clean and strong you will hesitate at the moment of truth. You will not kill."
The way the next of kin was notified of their loved one was killed in action during WW II was by Western Union telegram delivered by a bicycle riding messenger. If you were being notified of multiple deaths as was the case in this film, notification was done in-person by a military officer, usually from the same branch of service as the deceased when possible. That's why the mother upon seeing the officer exit the car momentarily froze knowing that meant at least 2 of her boys were either KIA or MIA, as the priest exits the car, she staggers and completely collapsed. Unfortunately, you didn't include that in your video presentation. That is one of the most important scenes in the movie. The mother speaks no lines in the movie, yet her breakdown brought a flood of tears form movie goers in theaters across the nation. Another important scene is it is clear from the few lines Ryan's wife speaks that she has never heard the name of Capt. John Miller, this means John has never spoken to her about what happened that day in Ramelle. What many missed is listening to Ryan speaking at the Miller's grave of how he thought about what those 8 men did for him every day was not guilt, but commitment.
There are units assigned to recover, bury and mark graves. Usually these were temporary battlefield cemeteries. As hostilities moved farther away, a more permanent site would be selected, at the family's request, whenever possible, the remains would be returned to the United States. At the Normandy Cemetery Visitors Center, you'll find the following inscription: IF EVER PROOF WERE NEEDED THAT WE FOUGHT FOR A CAUSE AND NOT FOR CONQUEST, IT COULD BE FOUND IN THESE CEMETERIES. HERE WAS OUR ONLY CONQUEST: ALL WE ASKED … WAS ENOUGH … SOIL IN WHICH TO BURY OUR GALLANT DEAD.General Mark W. ClarkChairman, American Battle Monuments Commission, 1969-1984

9:58 - Yes! The photo sitting on the radio! I noticed that too, and wonder about its significance. Here is a comment I also left on another reactor's channel:
Sitting on the radio there is a photo of what must be the four Ryan brothers. I'm not sure what it means but there is a small American flag in front of the photo. The flag is covering one brother's face and the flag's shadow is on two other brothers. Maybe the flag and its shadow are shrouds meaning three have died and the one left is Matt Damon (it's too small for me to see if it is actually Damon in the photo)? Also, the motif of the American flag with sunlight shining through it also appears at the beginning and the end of the movie. In those bookend shots, we are looking at the American flag with sunlight shining through from the other side, so the flag would be casting a shadow on us, the viewer - just like the flag casts a shadow on the photo of the Ryan brothers.
If anyone else has thoughts on any of this please share!

Its funny you mention this reminds you of the early Call of Duty, because Spielberg was literally produced the 1st Medal of Honor game, which was CoDs direct competitor for many years (I think he used his film studio to help the video game production, idk im fuzzy on the exact details. I do know he was involved more than merely 'inspiring' the games). Which in turn led to his continued interest and work on other WWII projects including Band of Brothers and The Pacific. There are many set pieces/cut scenes from many of these games that are straight up ripped directly from Spielbergs films.

This was the first war movie that unapologetically and realistically depicted the real horrors of war. Many of those troops that invaded Normandy were 18, 19--some only 16 or 17 because they lied about their age to join. These were the bravest men of their generation, and all free peoples of the world owe them a debt we cannot repay. Contrast them with the soyboys of today who have a breakdown if someone calls them the wrong pronoun, or don't even know which public bathroom to use. God have mercy on us.

When he's shooting the tank, there is a really touching sequence in the book. Yeah, he knew it was futile, a gun against a tank. But the book says that the Captain had never been a quitter, whether the game was baseball, teaching, or war and so long as he had a gun and bullets he was going to use them till his last breath. The first time I got to that part of the book and read that I cried like a baby. So hopeless. So many dead that I wanted to live. And now all that's left is what looks like one final act of futile defiance by a very brave and very good man.

@11:35 I think an important thing to say here is that culturally, the US military is subservient to the US people. Although the US government makes decisions for the military, the military has always ultimately served the US people (and the people elect the government). So, in the movie, the commander decides to save the last Ryan just because of the sacrifice that their family has already given to their country. The missions are important, of course, but the sacrifice of those serving in the military for the citizens of the US is held above all else. Understanding this, you can then balance the morality of losing more soldiers to save the last of the Ryan family.

First time on your channel thanks to the algorithm. I very nearly passed on this video and your channel, disappointingly enough, because I don't understand your language. Closed Captioning on UA-cam is quite worthless but, for some unknown reason, I took a chance at it and it did a surprisingly good job of translating. So now I'm a subscriber and fan of your channel. I enjoyed your reaction to this very much, especially your thoughts at the end. I hope you have one for the Green Mile too. I'll check right now. Thank you for your channel.

    Hola Pilar,
Te qiero recomendar la pelicula 'Man on Fire' con Denzel Washington. Washington es un Ex-CIA con corazon frio que toma un trabajo como guardaespaldas de la hijita de un emprasario en la Ciudad de Mexico.

John Miller passes the message to Ryan about his brothers and she starts gibbering about Matt Damon‘s wife. Who gives a shit? You‘re supposed to take in the characters perspective and SOMEHOW imagine how it‘d feel to find out all of your brothers are dead. If you wanna talk about trivialities throughout the whole movie, dont call it a „reaction“.
