  • I'm showing my wife the Pixar film Ratatouille for the first time!
Remy dreams of becoming a great chef, despite being a rat in a definitely rodent-phobic profession. He moves to Paris to follow his dream, and with the help of hapless garbage boy Linguini he puts his culinary skills to the test in the kitchen but he has to stay in hiding at the same time, with hilarious consequences. Remy eventually gets the chance to prove his culinary abilities to a great food critic but is the food good?

I've made ratatouille many times, both the traditional version and the one shown in the movie. Normal ratatouille is just a vegetable stew, its just chopped up veggies simmered in a vegetable broth (I normally use a bell pepper puree). The one shown in the movie is a special type called Confit byaldi, instead of the veggies simmered in broth, they're shingled in a patterned and then steam/simmered in the oven covered. The sauce I normally use is a bell pepper sauce and the veggies I use are eggplant, tomato, yellow squash, and zucchini

I grew up eating some (americanized) french food because my mom lived in France for about 10 years. Ratatouille was one of my favorites. She adds parmesan cheese; really kicks it up a notch. I also loved jambon berre (ham and butter sandwich on baguette bread) and aligot (cheesy mashed potatoes).

As an amateur household cook, I admit that I had to reread your comment a few times to understand what was the similarity between the two types of Ratatouille you described. From what I gather, they are both vegetable stews; however, the traditional is simmered in a broth whereas the other one is steamed-simmered while covered inside the oven

@@josebeteta8283 sort of, the former is like a traditional stew while the later is more like a casserole where you use thinly sliced vegetables and layer them

Ratatouille is one of my favorite childhood movies. This movie shows friendship can come in all shapes and sizes. The critic's monologue at the end has to be one of the finest moments in Pixar history. As one of your French regular watcher, I'm really glad you watched this movie. It is a great representation of the importance of cuisine in our country.
The dish "Ratatouille" is a combinaison of fresh vegetable cut and roasted or boiled, with courgettes (zucchini), aubergines (eggplant), tomatoes, garlic, onions and peppers. It comes from the South of France and is very healthy and light, but still filling.
The reason Colette is so surprised by Rémy's choice to make a ratatouille is that it is a very traditional dish rarely seen in Grand Restaurants, but more often in homes made by parents or grand-parents for family meals.

This is honestly in my top five favorite films of all time. It's a comfort film for me. Whenever I'm in a negative mood/headspace, I put this on, and I can't be unhappy by the end of it. There's so much *heart* in it, and it's got some banger lines.
"Change *is* nature, and it starts when we decide" is probably one of my favorite lines of the whole film, but I actually have "your only limit is your soul" as part of a larger tattoo piece on my back. Like that's how much of an impression this film has made on me over the years. I'm so, so glad you both love it as much as you do. Thank you for this one.

Interestingly, i just read Brad Bird is now making an animated movie with Skydance, not Disney. It seems several Disney people moved to Skydance (John Lasseter, Alan Menken, the guy who directed Zootopia whose name I don't know). It should be interesting to see what comes out of that studio in the coming years.

As a french I never understood the french accent in american movies, it sounds more italian than french to me ^^ I think it sound too "round", it should sound more "rought", almost germanic imo. I think it's because old singers, like Edith Piaf tend to roll the R while singing, something we don't do in modern french, and it makes sense since France seems stuck in the 1st half of the 20th century, according to stereotypes 😅

Jen talking about animated food made me instantly think of Studio Ghibli movies. The food in those movies is BEAUTIFUL. If you all haven't already, please watch some Ghibli movies. I recommend Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, or Howl's Moving Castle, (but pretty much all Ghibli movies are worth a watch.)

There's theory which says that, like father like son, Gusteau was terrible at cooking, and like father like son, he also could be "controlled" by his own little chef.
This would explain why the only dish that Gusteau named after him was so horrible.

Normally I have no issue with your editing Hardman. But the first couple minutes of the reaction… just what were you smoking???? 😂😂😂
Also: is this the first time that you’ve edited the sound?

If Jen loves animated food, she would go bananas (heh) with Ghibli movie food. Best animated food hands down.

7:20 It’s funny how many people don’t know what sentient means. Many people conflate it with sapient but they’re really not the same thing at all. Sentience is just the quality of being subjectively aware, the ability to perceive & have affected states. All rats are sentient. Sapience is intelligence, i.e. a rat who can communicate in English & make a tomato bisque soup.

Gotta say, I'm a huge fan of the channel and maybe this is an unpopular opinion, but I found the editing to be very distracting. I get going for something with a little more flare, but I felt like it took away from your reactions. I was really looking forward to this watch too but I couldn't make it more than a few minutes. You guys have great videos as they are, no need to fix something that's not broken.

Petition for Jen to watch the Zorro sequel so Holden will dawn the mask and cape again.
Also, editing for this one was TIGHT.
