This video is hands down the best instructional bass lesson I have ever viewed. Most people when they are trying to show me how to play only want to show me how funky they are and how fast they can slap the bass. But you, actually took the time to go through everything and explained it to the fullest. I can't believe I got all this bass knowledge for free, but I did, and I want to thank you very much.
Np. Been looking something not to complicated as im thinking to buy my first bass guitar. (childhood dream). Any hints what to look for? Im considering HB j75MN from thomann. Any advice will be a blessing for me. Cheers o/
there are good affordable brands out there. Personally I like Yamaha's TRB basses, Ibanez BTB or SR series, and Fender Jazz basses. Make sure the action (distance between the strings and the fretboard) isn't too high on the Fender bass because its hard to play with high action.
Your teaching style is really on point bro. I am a newbie and i want to learn but have fun doing it you know what im saying. By breaking it down the way you did you did me a favor. Thanks.
I hardly ever comment on videos I watch but today was an exception. I am 42 and I just bouught a bass just for the hell of it just because I wanted to learn to play. I am slowly learning and then I came up upon your video. It is by far the most learning and satisfying video I have watched. I've learneed so much more in the 8 minutes and 22 seconds this video last than the entire time I have had this bass. Thank you for making it. GREAT video
Thank you Manny, I started learning bass a few years ago as part of my rehabilitation following a traumatic spinal injury - I've been using "Rocksmith" to learn and have improved dramatically but I'm only following along with whats on the screen - now - a few years latter I am wanting to learn the what and why of what I am doing. I have tried 2 instructors but became self contentious after their direction. I was contemplating giving up on bass because I couldn't make sense of or understand the what and why's that make up bass music - then I found your videos and have found your video's to be both helpful and informative and perhaps most important (for me anyway) easy to follow along with. Thank you immensely, your video's are greatly appreciated by many
I have been trying to learn the bass for years - on and off. I have struggled so much trying to find someone who teaches things as simple as you do. Honestly, the only bass tutorial that actually allowed me to understand how and why the notes are placed - before it seemed so complex and confusing. THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I've been playing bass for 2 years and I don't know why I clicked on this video. But I am glad I did this has helped some of my friends that are new to bass Congrats many you explain this precise and with ease without being too complicated and easy to understand. Definitely a subscription from me. 👍🏼👍🏼
56 years old just got my first bass and everything I learned today from my brother you confirmed Great visual in your video Thanks for getting it through my head
If you think about it the piano is the easiest instrument which displays every note and every instruments root so piano is probably the best instrument to learn at first!
This is a blessing, I use to play self taught lead guitar in church over 40 yrs ago, stopped playing joined the army for 22yrs retired from the army 19 yrs ago, back to singing in church and watching the musicians and the guitar bug it drive me crazy. My biggest fan was my mother who passed away 3 weeks ago. I got a bass guitar, named it after her, stumbled upon your tutorials and now I noticed I have learned more in 2 of your classes than the other bass player ever heard of . Thanks for your gift of teaching.
I just started playing bass and this helped a lot. I've honestly never been able to understand where notes fall on the fretboard, but now I can actually understand it, I used to learn how to play based on pitch matching with different songs and mimicking hand and finger placement
Ive been itching to refresh my memory about the electric bass chords and your video not only refreshed my memory but taught me a few things as well! Awesome video
Omg I understand this now. It’s nothing but repeating patterns. Man! You explained this so simple. You didn’t start the video off with you just ripping away on the bass you just got straight to it. Thanks bro!
I know that this video is from 7 years ago but I just wanna say thank you so much for this very detailed tutorial. I just picked up a bass and I literally don't have any idea about music theory/ chords etc. in any instrument and this gave me all I need to know to start. The best one yet! All other tutorials just show how funky they are.
I watched some of your videos and I have to give you props. Your lesson videos all clear, precise, and incredibly valuable. When I started playing bass I paid for lessons that covered the same topics that you're teaching for free. I wish I had known about/had such resources back then. This is a great gift to beginning bassists and people who are looking to sharpen their foundations. I'll shoot people your videos whenever they ask for tips. Also, you seemed to feel like you'd lose our attention if you went into music theory. However, even your brief explanation was incredibly informative and helpful. I know that people like the basics/get distracted easily. Yet, I'm sure there are people who would enjoy videos on music theory tied to bass as well. So don't feel bad about such explanations. They only help the listener better understand the rest of the lesson. I, for one, appreciate it! Thanks man.
In a couple of months im going to get my first bass, and im very excited about it. I decided that i wanted to start learning now, and this is probably the best bass lesson video i found. You are amazing for sharing all this knowledge. Thank you :,)
I've been playing bass for years without knowing the chords, I just play them by heart. This video is by far the easiest to understand, more like a humble ELI5. Thank you man, this helps a lot! Let me continue memorizing all the chords!
DUDE!!!!!BECAUSE OF THIS VIDEO I NOW KNOW MUSIC THEORY! !!!!!!! I UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SHARPS AND FLATS. THIX VIDEO IS AMAZING. I will conquer bass. But i need to buy one first. .....:3
First off, for the love of God, thank God someone is finally not stupid. Forreal dude, you're the first guy I've seen do it right. I mean I guess it's easier for me cause I've learned a bunch of instruments before this, but all of the videos I've seen before this make it sound so complicated, and you just laid it out and gave us the info we needed to know. Keep going dude, you're doing a good job.
Great video. I am a complete beginner and your explanations actually covered everything. Most bass tutorial videos seem to be focused on explaining what the title of the video is and nothing else, even when they are supposed to be for beginners. Thanks!
Everyone else in the comments pretty much already said it this is the best explanation I’ve ever seen I’ve been playing bass for over a year now and couldn’t read notes or understand how to read notes and in less than 10 minutes I understand it clicked instantly thank you
My love of music lead me to buy a bass guitar out of the blue with no clue on how to play an instrument at all. I thought I was out of my depth when I bought it as I didn't have a clue what to do or read the notes at all and was about to just put it in the bag and leave it be. Since I've found this video its helped so much. Subscribed !
I play bass for a year and half now and I'm glad I've found this! I picked up bass for a band of a friend of mine but I still can't read the notes on a fretboard, this really helps :)
Thank you so much I’m attempting to learn Bass again after 25 years and a stroke and I wanted to start off learning all the notes on the Bass Neck and well I came across you have it,I thank you so much,I have a long way to go I’ll come back to your page here I’m sure I’ll learn a lot more thank you
So thankful I found this video! I had to sift through other tutorials that made this simple lesson so complex. The diagram you provided really helped, thank you so much for making it so easy for me to understand!! You have a new subscriber!!

Never played a note in my life and I have a friend who convinced me to start. He suggested acoustic bass guitar. It arrives tomorrow night! And I'll use this video to get started on my new hobby.
Yes, I'm an old gal too and I'm glad I'm not the only one getting started late. My Triplet granddaughters...yes, I said my granddaughters, (LOL!!) are musicians, and they've heard me say many times that I would've liked to have learned how to play the bass. So, what do they do? They gave me a bass for Christmas this year. No excuse now, I have to learn how to play it! I agree with everyone here that this video is helpful, but I will have to watch it over and over. LOL!!
@@greybeardbass I just started with an acoustic bass and it's a bit challenging since the strings are higher action than on an electric bass to get proper sound through the sound hole. Any lower and it buzzes. I'm going to buy an electric bass too.

Watching on your teachings based on Notes on the Bass, your teachings have explain it all thank you very much. I am a beginner in Bass. Waiting on much of your videos to make me improve upon my Bass learning thanks.
Thank you so much for this. All other bass tutorials did it way too quick and didn't show the notes very clear, but with you, you took your time and made it very visible and easy to learn , thank you again :)
