'Play simple chords over really fast drum beats'. Bit hard to avoid when playing punk rock. 'Use the banana strum'. And here I've been using the grapefruit strum. Went looking for this in case it was a thing and the closest I came was one UA-cam video where the word 'banana'' was used as a mnemonic for an up-down guitar strum count of three. 'Don't get too complicated with the lead guitar'. It's punk rock; you can do what you like. Bands like the Dead Kennedys, Clash, Patti Smith Group, the Voidoids and many others had no qualms about playing a complicated solo if the song needed it. Punk musicians are proper musicians too, it's just that punk music is generally played at a higher tempo and has a relatively distinct set of stylistic indicators. Having said that, there is always room for innovators and if that means 'good' musicianship the so be it. BTW a few of those key New York bands HAD to be good because no audience, no drugs...
