Balfour 100 years on: salvation or betrayal? - UpFront

  • "One nation, solemnly promised to a second nation, the country of a third." That's how one writer famously described the Balfour Declaration - the declaration by then-British Foreign Minister Arthur Balfour, on November 2, 1917, that said, "His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people. [...]"
    One hundred years later, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians continues, with no sign of any sort of resolution. So, how central was the Balfour Declaration to later developments and what role did Britain play subsequently? And should the declaration be celebrated as the first step towards the establishment of the state of Israel and self-determination for the Jewish people, or decried as an act of betrayal by the British, who had also promised Palestine to the Arabs?
    “The problem...with the Balfour Declaration is that whatever explanations we give, none of them justifies doing what was done in a country which was already inhabited,” says Ghada Karmi a British-Palestinian author and lecturer at Exeter University's Institute of Arab and Islamic studies. “That's the fundamental flaw in the Balfour Declaration. That is the fundamental issue in this whole story. That you're dealing with a country with an indigenous population. So, you cannot go and plant another people in such a country. It's very simple.”
    “Yes, there were 700,000 Palestinian Arabs...but there were five and a half million desperate Jews who did not enjoy the citizenship rights of Western Europe,” says Martin Kramer an Israeli-American historian and founding president of Shalem College in Jerusalem. “If you say that Palestine is not their home, then what is their home? They are the eternal wanderers.”
    For British journalist and former Middle East editor for the Guardian, Ian Black, the opposing views of the Balfour Declaration are irreconcilable.
    “What's fascinating about it is that those two views are completely irreconcilable, which is why people who support Israel, Israelis, Zionists, many Jews are celebrating, and most Palestinians are indeed mourning and protesting...And in a way, it's an encapsulation of the deadlock at the heart of the continuing crisis,” says Black, who is also the author of a new book on the history of the Israel-Palestine conflict since the Balfour declaration, Enemies and Neighbours: Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel, 1917-2017.
    In this UpFront special, we explore the centennial of the Balfour Declaration and discuss whether its legacy is one of salvation, injustice or betrayal.

    Very, very good insight.
    Ghada Karmi hits every nail on the head.
    1 thing I'd like to add: the question: why Palestine?
    In the 1900's, the zionists were indeed playing with the idea of creating their own state.
    But they considered several options. Some places in south america even.
    In my view, the only solution now is to relocate the zionists to another place; like a scarsely populated state in the US, since the US is the biggest supporter of israel.
    If we leave things to possible solutions like 'equal rights' or 'two states in Pälestine', that is not going to happen.
    It's clear now that the zionists want to kill off every Palestinian so they have the country to themselves. Exactly like what happened to the native indians in the US.

      I wouldn't imagine a functioning 2-state solution would exist given the current "boarders" (though it's really all Israeli controlled). I'd expect such a solution to have not only drastically redrawn lines, but rules and laws as well.
      However I'm not nearly educated enough on the politics of the region, nor on public/international policy as a whole, to make any guess as to how that would work, let alone how to get the people from each side on board.

    At the end of the day the British failed miserably at partitioning the Middle East; just like their partioning of India was a catastrophe. In both cases of partition, the legacy of the Brits was decades of never ending conflict. Jordan should have been split into two countries; one for the Palestinians, and one for the Hashemites. This would have stopped all disputes, and unnecessary conflicts.

    Israelis of modern times who have occupied the majority of what was once Palestine are not at all related to the Jews of Biblical times , but rather they are Ashkenazi Jews . The Ashkenazim are descended from the ancient Khazarian Empire from southern Russia and the Caucuses region . These Ashkenazi people are not Semitic at all . The conversion of the Khazars took place in the 8 th century AD , when they adopted Judaism in order to avoid conflict with the pagan Russ Viking tribes to the north , the Mongols to the east , the Islamic caliphates to the south and the recently Christianized Slavic peoples to the west . This conversion was done primarily for reasons of commerce as the Khazar lands were situated astride the Black Sea region where the white slave trade of Slavic peoples was conducted between the Mongols / Tatars who captured the slaves / Slavs ( origin of the word ) and the Islamic Sultans who purchased the white Slavic captives - the Jewish Khazars were the brokers and profiteers of this slave trade .
    When the Khazar Empire was absorbed under the Russian Empire after it had adopted the Eastern Orthodox Faith , these Khazars disbursed throughout Russia and Eastern Europe , eventually working their way into Western Europe where they were associated with business and commerce , primarily as merchants , bankers / usurers , jewelers ( again , look at the word origin ) and political advisors to kings ( just like little Jared Kushner is to Trump ) . It was Khazars who were the architects of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917 , with the financial assistance of their brethren on Wall Street ---- the dynamic continues to this day . The Yiddish language of the Ashkenazi is an amalgam of the ancient Khazar tongue blended with Hebrew , Slavic and German - thereby representative of the morphing of the language in accordance with the migrations westwards into the heart of Europe . No Semitic connection whatsoever .
    The only true Semitic Jews remaining on earth today , the ones with a legitimate connection to the Biblical epics of the Exodus or to the two destructions of Solomon's Temple ( by the Babylonians and the Romans , respectively ) , or to the epic of Jesus Christ , are the Sephardic Jews . The Sephardim are also known as the Mediterranean Jews , as their diaspora spread around the regions of the Mediterranean in accordance with the ancient Roman Provinces . Spain , Portugal , Italy , Greece , Turkey , Palestine , Syria and North Africa all had thriving Jewish communities of Sephardic peoples . Smaller Sephardic communities also existed in places like Iraq , Iran and Armenia . Today the Sephardim constitute around just 7 % of the Jewish population world wide , and have largely been marginalized and silenced by the Ashkenazim .
    The creation of the State of Israel began with the British via The Balfour Declaration during World War I ( as England was by then firmly in the stranglehold of the Zionist Banking House of Rothschild ) . Moses Hess and Theodor Herzl , two Ashkenazi Jews , were the fathers of modern Zionism , which is a political movement and financial agenda , having nothing at all to do with the Judaic Faith . ( This topic should be researched by the likes of Mr. Lowry before they spout - off about gobbledygook they know nothing about ) . World War II provided the catalyst for the settlement of Ashkenazi Jews into Palestine ( former Ottoman Turkish territory , subsequently taken over by the British / Rothschilds after WWI ) by way of the Holocaust ( Hebrew for Burnt Offering ) . The Banking House of Rothschild ( who owns the US Federal Reserve Bank ) financed the creation of Israel as a beachhead for the access and commerce of middle east oil ( as the internal combustion engine took hold in the aftermath of WWI ) and to establish the beachhead for World War III . ( Suggested reading ; Exodus , by Leon Uris )
    So then , to those who cheer the decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem , be careful what you are elated over , as this move may well trigger a tsunami of events that potentially could change the world as you have known it . Everything is connected .
    IS = Isis , ancient Egyptian Lunar Goddess - later renamed The Virgin Mary
    RA = Ra Amun ( Amen , aka Horus ) , ancient Egyptian Solar God - later renamed Jesus Christ
    EL = El Elohim ( The God of gods - Hebrew ) aka Yahweh- a bloodthirsty god of War
    Thus , the name of IS - RA - EL ...... Israel

    This woman has hit the nail on the head "It was someone else's country". Yes, the British had a mandate - the land did not 'belong' to the Arabs who lived there. Prior to the Mandate, the land was controlled by Turkey. and the indigenous population still did not 'own' their country.
    As the land was divided in half how did this compromise the arabs who lived there....most of whom went to Jordan. Why does Karmi not not dispute the creation of any other sovereign state by The League of Nations.
    When Jordan controlled the religious rights, access was restricted at least under Israeli control the religious sites are open to all.

      @khaldoun sleiman I think you misunderstood! The Levantine Arabs who lived in what was Ottoman Palestine were given over 50% of the land and this was renamed as Transjordan and subsequently The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The remaining area was mandated by the British who then carved up the remaining land - half to Levantine Arabs and half to Jews. The Jews accepted this, the Arabs did not. I agree that the entire land should not have been mandated after WWI but it was and we can not turn back time. The only way to solve the solution is surely to think ahead. Karmi is a bitter old woman who forgets her own 'truths' and will use aggression and lies to promulgate her world vision. Please listen to some of them on "Intelligence Squared" and then read her biography! As Judge Judy says, "If you tell the truth, you don't need a good memory!". Sadly, she suffers from an amnesia of the truth.

    Unfortunately, this debate "evolved' into sheer irrationality, as usually happens (modus operandi) when there is a simple and clear conclusion.
    Balfour made the "deal" with Zionism and the Jewish Diaspora in 1917 but Hitler came to power in 1933 (16 years later), we cannot revert the flux of time without seriously injuring logic and common sense (the least common of the senses).
    Still, there is a good point here, namely that Balfour, Rothschild, and Weizman et al had a great impact and responsibility in the future holocaust...
    Not many people understand that past events cannot be explained by future events regardless of the emotional charge the future events can stir in people, this is an obvious fallacy demonstrating that the debate was lost.

    One factor that keeps getting overlooked is the cultural ambiance of Western countries, particularly right after WWII. Most folks today don't realize how rascist our own culture was against Jews, then. The "WASP" or white anglo-saxon protestant control of social norms was prevalent. Anti-semitism (REAL anti-semitism) was very out front, both here and in GB. Nothing was thought of running classified ads saying that rentals, home sales, jobs and even service in cafes would not allow Jews. This was in both the North and the South US. My grandfather, after retirement, worked as a part-time reception clerk for a high-end hotel in Milwaukee. On the desk, there was a brass sign, about the size of a desk name-plate, that said "Restricted". I asked my mother what that meant and she hemmed and hawed and came up with some anemic explanation for the fact that no Jews were allowed. This country and GB and others, were NOT going to be forced to take in more Jews, so "Palestine", a fully inhabited country for many generations, long since promised to its residents, was a convenient dumping ground..a handy "solution", disguised as a "humanitarian effort" for this wayward Jewish population! GB came up with the Balfour Declaration but the US was a primary proponent of its disgusting enactment!

    Isaiah 29New King James Version (NKJV)
    GOD's SOON Destruction of Israel Prophesied in Holy Bible for Crimes Against Humanity!
    "WOE TO JERUSALEM"
    29 “Woe to Ariel, Ariel, (Ariel Sharon was president and did 4 wars in Palestine), the city where David dwelt!
    Add year to year;
    Let feasts come around.
    2 Yet I will distress Ariel;
    There shall be heaviness and sorrow,
    And it shall be to Me as Ariel.
    3 I will encamp Against you all around,
    I will lay siege against you with a mound,
    And I will raise siegeworks against you.
    4 You shall be brought down,
    You shall speak out of the ground;
    Your speech shall be low, out of the dust;
    Your voice shall be like a medium’s, out of the ground;
    And your speech shall whisper out of the dust.
    5 “Moreover the multitude of your foes
    Shall be like fine dust,
    And the multitude of the terrible ones
    Like chaff that passes away;
    Yes, it shall be in an instant, suddenly.
    6 You will be punished by the Lord of hosts
    With thunder and earthquake and great noise,
    With storm and tempest
    And the flame of devouring fire.
    7 The multitude of all the nations who fight against Ariel,
    Even all who fight against her and her fortress,
    And distress her,
    Shall be as a dream of a night vision.
    8 It shall even be as when a hungry man dreams,
    And look-he eats;
    But he awakes, and his soul is still empty;
    Or as when a thirsty man dreams,
    And look-he drinks;
    But he awakes, and indeed he is faint,
    And his soul still craves:
    So the multitude of all the nations shall be,
    Who fight against Mount Zion.”
    The Blindness of Disobedience
    9 Pause and wonder!
    Blind yourselves and be blind!
    They are drunk, but not with wine;
    They stagger, but not with intoxicating drink.
    10 For the Lord has poured out on you
    The spirit of deep sleep,
    And has closed your eyes, namely, the prophets;
    And He has covered your heads, namely, the seers.
    11 The whole vision has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one who is literate, saying, “Read this, please.”
    And he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.”
    12 Then the book is delivered to one who is illiterate, saying, “Read this, please.”
    And he says, “I am not literate.”
    13 Therefore the Lord said:
    “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths
    And honor Me with their lips,
    But have removed their hearts far from Me,
    And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,
    14 Therefore, behold, I will again do a marvelous work
    Among this people,
    A marvelous work and a wonder;
    For the wisdom of their wise men shall perish,
    And the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden.”
    15 Woe to those who seek deep to hide their counsel far from the Lord,
    And their works are in the dark;
    They say, “Who sees us?” and, “Who knows us?”
    16 Surely you have things turned around!
    Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay;
    For shall the thing made say of him who made it,
    “He did not make me”?
    Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it,
    “He has no understanding”?
    Future Recovery of Wisdom
    17 Is it not yet a very little while
    Till LEBANON shall be turned into a fruitful field,
    And the fruitful field be esteemed as a forest?
    18 In that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book,
    And the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness.
    19 The humble also shall increase their joy in the Lord,
    And the poor among men shall rejoice

Palestinians were expelled and/or fled because Arab states started a genocidal war against nascent Israel in 1948. The existence of 2 million Arab Israelis proves that Israel isn't the problem. Where are the Iraqi Jews, Egyptian Jews, Syrian Jews, Tunisian Jews...? They were all kicked out (or compelled to leave) just for being Jewish.
