Balfour 100 years on: salvation or betrayal? - UpFront

- "One nation, solemnly promised to a second nation, the country of a third." That's how one writer famously described the Balfour Declaration - the declaration by then-British Foreign Minister Arthur Balfour, on November 2, 1917, that said, "His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people. [...]"
One hundred years later, the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians continues, with no sign of any sort of resolution. So, how central was the Balfour Declaration to later developments and what role did Britain play subsequently? And should the declaration be celebrated as the first step towards the establishment of the state of Israel and self-determination for the Jewish people, or decried as an act of betrayal by the British, who had also promised Palestine to the Arabs?
“The problem...with the Balfour Declaration is that whatever explanations we give, none of them justifies doing what was done in a country which was already inhabited,” says Ghada Karmi a British-Palestinian author and lecturer at Exeter University's Institute of Arab and Islamic studies. “That's the fundamental flaw in the Balfour Declaration. That is the fundamental issue in this whole story. That you're dealing with a country with an indigenous population. So, you cannot go and plant another people in such a country. It's very simple.”
“Yes, there were 700,000 Palestinian Arabs...but there were five and a half million desperate Jews who did not enjoy the citizenship rights of Western Europe,” says Martin Kramer an Israeli-American historian and founding president of Shalem College in Jerusalem. “If you say that Palestine is not their home, then what is their home? They are the eternal wanderers.”
For British journalist and former Middle East editor for the Guardian, Ian Black, the opposing views of the Balfour Declaration are irreconcilable.
“What's fascinating about it is that those two views are completely irreconcilable, which is why people who support Israel, Israelis, Zionists, many Jews are celebrating, and most Palestinians are indeed mourning and protesting...And in a way, it's an encapsulation of the deadlock at the heart of the continuing crisis,” says Black, who is also the author of a new book on the history of the Israel-Palestine conflict since the Balfour declaration, Enemies and Neighbours: Arabs and Jews in Palestine and Israel, 1917-2017.
In this UpFront special, we explore the centennial of the Balfour Declaration and discuss whether its legacy is one of salvation, injustice or betrayal.

Amazing how the emphasis is made on saving Jewish lives but down plays the value of Palestinian lives
Why is your name that?
I had a guest inside my house, i gave him one room. Now he's claiming my kitchen and offering to me my own bathroom. I then refused his offer, he simply took control over all my house and kicked me out.
Falafelpump rosh Silly he's using what Israel did he does not actually mean he's house is being taken over.
I was living in my house and it was taken over by thieves, we were kicked out of our own house, when we returned there were squatters living there (Palestinians)as we were kind people we offered to split the house in 2, the squatters and there friends (6 Arab states) rejected this kind offer and tried to kill us... but they failed.

@Servando Constantino de Jesus
My origins are from Yemen, but more than a thousand year ago my grandfathers came to Algeria and here i was born. Now, do i have the right to go to Yemen right now and start claiming their land??? And if they refuse giving me back the places where my ancestors used to live centuries ago, I'll kick them out or kill them.

If you notice, the professor never answered Ghada Karmi's question that she raised.
All he did was make an emotional appeal to the suffering of the jewish people.
So, brutalize another people! Anyway, Stalin gave the Jews a homeland in 1928, the Autonomous region of Birobidzhan, national language; Yiddish. The Jews had no cause to butcher the innocent Palestinians, they could always have gone to Birobidzhan..
This professor is probably a Zionist. The woman destroyed him with simple logic. 👌

Long as Israel gets unconditional U.S. backing, no peace.
Ghadi karmi has summed up so beautifully about the plight of Palestinian population who were the natives and how homeland was taken away from them. Balfour declaration was unjust and betrayal from Britishers so british govt is an enabler of this justice
Palestinians should have the right to make a homeland in England since Palestine was awarded to the Israelis by the British!

Ghada Karmi hits every nail on the head.
1 thing I'd like to add: the question: why Palestine?
In the 1900's, the zionists were indeed playing with the idea of creating their own state.
But they considered several options. Some places in south america even.
In my view, the only solution now is to relocate the zionists to another place; like a scarsely populated state in the US, since the US is the biggest supporter of israel.
If we leave things to possible solutions like 'equal rights' or 'two states in Pälestine', that is not going to happen.
It's clear now that the zionists want to kill off every Palestinian so they have the country to themselves. Exactly like what happened to the native indians in the US.

There are three things the USA and Israel does not have much of, money, friends and time.
They have money and friends, but not time
Why is no one mentioning Lord Walter Rothschild to whom the letter was written
What difference does it make?

There are still Zoroastrians living in Iran today and practising their religion peacefully. So others who left should go back. Cuz Iran today ain't responsible for what its ancestors did to them.
@@princekumarsingh6703 Well, we strongly disagree with that, but why did you bring up the case which is not necessary related with this conflict? Did you wanna point out that the Palestinians need to be blamed of what other people did in the past? I just can't understand. If you brought up the Hamas' operation in this comment section, that may be still relatable.
I find it fascinating that these 3 scholars see 3 different long-term solutions: Status Quo, 1-state, and 2-state. I'm familiar with Kramer's work, but I look forward to reading Black and Karmi's as well!
Higgins2001 status quo and the 2 state "solutions" are actually one and the same because israel will keep taking land, whilst arguing for a 2 state solution. The 2 state solution is long gone, its practically all israel now.
I wouldn't imagine a functioning 2-state solution would exist given the current "boarders" (though it's really all Israeli controlled). I'd expect such a solution to have not only drastically redrawn lines, but rules and laws as well.
However I'm not nearly educated enough on the politics of the region, nor on public/international policy as a whole, to make any guess as to how that would work, let alone how to get the people from each side on board.
Divide and conquer was a strategy to break up the Ottoman Empire. The Balfour declaration was also used to promise establishment of Arab states idependent of Turkey.
I wish Jews and Palestinians come with everlasting peace! tear this hate wall down and make peace please!
At the end of the day the British failed miserably at partitioning the Middle East; just like their partioning of India was a catastrophe. In both cases of partition, the legacy of the Brits was decades of never ending conflict. Jordan should have been split into two countries; one for the Palestinians, and one for the Hashemites. This would have stopped all disputes, and unnecessary conflicts.
The reason why the US immediately recognized Israel (Harry Truman) and UK abstained can be easily explained by the typical UK's duplicity and the fact that the same horse was already sold 20 times over..., it happens even now when USA vetoes the UN resolutions to stop the Gaza genocide, UK abstains but none doubt about the true position of UK in this conflict.
Dr Ghada Karmi Truth ❤
Thé British empire are responsible for so many tragedies for civilians in the world. Palestine is just one example. Ireland, Kenya, Uganda, India, Jamaica, Grenada, South Africa, Austrailia and New Zealand are just a few examples of countries that has been suffering from British imperialism. Saying that I do respect the English civilian community. They are not responsible. The british companies are.
I do not think the British would accept Congo to help the Irish to colonize England. That's all that has to be said 😂. Let' sign the Lubmba declaration!! Fascinating how oppressors always justify their atrocities and dirty tactics with cynical explanations.
Yup
Don’t forget Cyprus
Utter nonsense. Kenya, Uganda etc would be in a far better situation today if the British had never left. You've clearly been nowhere nor met any of the inhabitants of such countries.
The woman is very good. She should be president/prime minister of Palestine
Should never of happened!
Israelis of modern times who have occupied the majority of what was once Palestine are not at all related to the Jews of Biblical times , but rather they are Ashkenazi Jews . The Ashkenazim are descended from the ancient Khazarian Empire from southern Russia and the Caucuses region . These Ashkenazi people are not Semitic at all . The conversion of the Khazars took place in the 8 th century AD , when they adopted Judaism in order to avoid conflict with the pagan Russ Viking tribes to the north , the Mongols to the east , the Islamic caliphates to the south and the recently Christianized Slavic peoples to the west . This conversion was done primarily for reasons of commerce as the Khazar lands were situated astride the Black Sea region where the white slave trade of Slavic peoples was conducted between the Mongols / Tatars who captured the slaves / Slavs ( origin of the word ) and the Islamic Sultans who purchased the white Slavic captives - the Jewish Khazars were the brokers and profiteers of this slave trade .
When the Khazar Empire was absorbed under the Russian Empire after it had adopted the Eastern Orthodox Faith , these Khazars disbursed throughout Russia and Eastern Europe , eventually working their way into Western Europe where they were associated with business and commerce , primarily as merchants , bankers / usurers , jewelers ( again , look at the word origin ) and political advisors to kings ( just like little Jared Kushner is to Trump ) . It was Khazars who were the architects of the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917 , with the financial assistance of their brethren on Wall Street ---- the dynamic continues to this day . The Yiddish language of the Ashkenazi is an amalgam of the ancient Khazar tongue blended with Hebrew , Slavic and German - thereby representative of the morphing of the language in accordance with the migrations westwards into the heart of Europe . No Semitic connection whatsoever .
The only true Semitic Jews remaining on earth today , the ones with a legitimate connection to the Biblical epics of the Exodus or to the two destructions of Solomon's Temple ( by the Babylonians and the Romans , respectively ) , or to the epic of Jesus Christ , are the Sephardic Jews . The Sephardim are also known as the Mediterranean Jews , as their diaspora spread around the regions of the Mediterranean in accordance with the ancient Roman Provinces . Spain , Portugal , Italy , Greece , Turkey , Palestine , Syria and North Africa all had thriving Jewish communities of Sephardic peoples . Smaller Sephardic communities also existed in places like Iraq , Iran and Armenia . Today the Sephardim constitute around just 7 % of the Jewish population world wide , and have largely been marginalized and silenced by the Ashkenazim .
The creation of the State of Israel began with the British via The Balfour Declaration during World War I ( as England was by then firmly in the stranglehold of the Zionist Banking House of Rothschild ) . Moses Hess and Theodor Herzl , two Ashkenazi Jews , were the fathers of modern Zionism , which is a political movement and financial agenda , having nothing at all to do with the Judaic Faith . ( This topic should be researched by the likes of Mr. Lowry before they spout - off about gobbledygook they know nothing about ) . World War II provided the catalyst for the settlement of Ashkenazi Jews into Palestine ( former Ottoman Turkish territory , subsequently taken over by the British / Rothschilds after WWI ) by way of the Holocaust ( Hebrew for Burnt Offering ) . The Banking House of Rothschild ( who owns the US Federal Reserve Bank ) financed the creation of Israel as a beachhead for the access and commerce of middle east oil ( as the internal combustion engine took hold in the aftermath of WWI ) and to establish the beachhead for World War III . ( Suggested reading ; Exodus , by Leon Uris )
So then , to those who cheer the decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem , be careful what you are elated over , as this move may well trigger a tsunami of events that potentially could change the world as you have known it . Everything is connected .
IS = Isis , ancient Egyptian Lunar Goddess - later renamed The Virgin Mary
RA = Ra Amun ( Amen , aka Horus ) , ancient Egyptian Solar God - later renamed Jesus Christ
EL = El Elohim ( The God of gods - Hebrew ) aka Yahweh- a bloodthirsty god of War
Thus , the name of IS - RA - EL ...... Israel

please do an Iraq special!
This woman has hit the nail on the head "It was someone else's country". Yes, the British had a mandate - the land did not 'belong' to the Arabs who lived there. Prior to the Mandate, the land was controlled by Turkey. and the indigenous population still did not 'own' their country.
As the land was divided in half how did this compromise the arabs who lived there....most of whom went to Jordan. Why does Karmi not not dispute the creation of any other sovereign state by The League of Nations.
When Jordan controlled the religious rights, access was restricted at least under Israeli control the religious sites are open to all.
Please do not listen to 'indigenous' or 'native' description: Most people's families who now live on the West Bank came from Transjordan and those that live in Gaza originally came from Egypt.
@ Yes, some do. Some come from the USA. Many come from Arab countries such as Yemen, Iran, Iraq etc. because they were thrown out. Others come from Africa, from where they too were expelled. Please read a history book and study this subject before you respond with nonsense. Many thanks.
@khaldoun sleiman I think you misunderstood! The Levantine Arabs who lived in what was Ottoman Palestine were given over 50% of the land and this was renamed as Transjordan and subsequently The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The remaining area was mandated by the British who then carved up the remaining land - half to Levantine Arabs and half to Jews. The Jews accepted this, the Arabs did not. I agree that the entire land should not have been mandated after WWI but it was and we can not turn back time. The only way to solve the solution is surely to think ahead. Karmi is a bitter old woman who forgets her own 'truths' and will use aggression and lies to promulgate her world vision. Please listen to some of them on "Intelligence Squared" and then read her biography! As Judge Judy says, "If you tell the truth, you don't need a good memory!". Sadly, she suffers from an amnesia of the truth.
Without the 1875 purchase of shares in the Suez Canal Company, Britain - and its Empire - might not have thought it necessary to support the French during WW I.
And thus, perhaps not needed the Balfour Declaration, or financially supported the Arab Revolt, or any proposed division of Arab Lands.
The Anglo-French promised a lot of things to the Arabs.
They promised a lot to everybody.
Is it not time for the rational voices of the Middle East to consider making a contemporary declaration regarding Palestinian self-determination and statehood?
If I go to your home while there is a hostage situation and the hostage-takers have let me in, take it and then generously offer you half of it, will you take the offer?
Unfortunately, this debate "evolved' into sheer irrationality, as usually happens (modus operandi) when there is a simple and clear conclusion.
Balfour made the "deal" with Zionism and the Jewish Diaspora in 1917 but Hitler came to power in 1933 (16 years later), we cannot revert the flux of time without seriously injuring logic and common sense (the least common of the senses).
Still, there is a good point here, namely that Balfour, Rothschild, and Weizman et al had a great impact and responsibility in the future holocaust...
Not many people understand that past events cannot be explained by future events regardless of the emotional charge the future events can stir in people, this is an obvious fallacy demonstrating that the debate was lost.

One factor that keeps getting overlooked is the cultural ambiance of Western countries, particularly right after WWII. Most folks today don't realize how rascist our own culture was against Jews, then. The "WASP" or white anglo-saxon protestant control of social norms was prevalent. Anti-semitism (REAL anti-semitism) was very out front, both here and in GB. Nothing was thought of running classified ads saying that rentals, home sales, jobs and even service in cafes would not allow Jews. This was in both the North and the South US. My grandfather, after retirement, worked as a part-time reception clerk for a high-end hotel in Milwaukee. On the desk, there was a brass sign, about the size of a desk name-plate, that said "Restricted". I asked my mother what that meant and she hemmed and hawed and came up with some anemic explanation for the fact that no Jews were allowed. This country and GB and others, were NOT going to be forced to take in more Jews, so "Palestine", a fully inhabited country for many generations, long since promised to its residents, was a convenient dumping ground..a handy "solution", disguised as a "humanitarian effort" for this wayward Jewish population! GB came up with the Balfour Declaration but the US was a primary proponent of its disgusting enactment!

In 1917 during the WWI Palestine was called Palestine under the Ottomans, until the British formed British Mandatory Palestine in 1920.
Palaestina Salutaris, Palaestina Secunda, Palaestina Prima and Syria Palestina is the earlier historical names of the region.
LOL WHATEVER….bulsh*****
@RandomnobodylikeyouIsrael was a country from approx. 1000 BC to 70 CE. Which makes an Israel for approximately 1000 years.
Most Arabs fled the country and were driven out by no one.
And there never was and there has never been a genocide because the Palis have multiplied tenfold since 1948.
Violence is correct, but the violence came from both sides the Arabs having started it.
You should get your facts straight.
3 against one as always bias program zagainst jews.
English? For Zionists is always a plot
Israel is the homeland of Jewish people
Long live Israel 🇮🇱
Love from India 🇮🇳
there was never any state called Palestine
Balfour is completely irrelevant. The British all but gave up on Balfour in the 1940s. Palestinians were expelled and/or fled because Arab states started a genocidal war against nascent Israel in 1948. The existence of 2 million Arab Israelis proves that Israel isn't the problem. Where are the Iraqi Jews, Egyptian Jews, Syrian Jews, Tunisian Jews...? They were all kicked out (or compelled to leave) just for being Jewish.
There's no such thing as "Palestine".
That land was controlled by the Turkey.
may be you need to study history :D
One of the most insulting things about the Balfour Declaration was its reference to "the non-Jewish peoples of Palestine" as though they didn't have a separate and distinct identity of their own. But hey, that's the imperialist, colonialist mindset for you.
There was never in history any state called Palestine governed by Palestinians. That's not a convenient truth for pro Palestinian Arabs to acknowledge. They NEVER OWNED THE LAND. PERIOD.
Dan Livni I am sure if you do your search you will find what you’re looking for...
Israel was established in the land of Israel, there was no Palestinian state in the region, nor in the intere world, nor in the history of the world. The jewish people are the indegenous people of Israel and not the arabs who call them selves Palestinians.
Where you foreigners emigrate to?
