“It occurred to me that there have always been selkie women: women who did not seem to belong to this world, because they did not fit into prevailing notions of what women were supposed to be. And if you did not fit into those notions, in some sense you weren't a woman. Weren't even quite human. The magical animal woman is, or can be, a metaphor for those sorts of women.” ― Theodora Goss . . Amen! Please Be Well, and Stay Strong, Will
This is oddly terrifying yet beautiful as a concept. it makes women who don't fit the norm into mystical creatures yet something that is somehow worth less than a human.
I love that for once the human man proved that he actually loved her by letting her go and be herself. And then they live happily in their own world and with each other at the same time. That’s real love❤️
If anyone has seen the excellent Selkie animated Irish film Song of the Sea one could see this story as a prequel to how the main characters Ben's mother Bronach (a Selkie) who interestingly also has dark hair and eyes just like the Selkie in this story met Ben's human father Coner. Anyone who loves Selkie stories should defiantly watch that movie!!
This tale is beautifully told. I love that for once, there is a happy ending to this tale, for usually it ends with the selkie recovering her skin and never returning back to land again.
Only because the man who claimed them treated them very poorly, not heeding or caring for their sorrow, only for the fact that such a beauty was theirs alone. If there’s one thing you will not live a life without knowing, is that a proud man’s greed has no bounds
I heard the original Celts were dark haired and olive complexioned before their intermarriage with other groups such as the Norse who invaded the British Isles. This might explain why some who live around Northern Ireland have such complexions, however, I'm sure there are those who would deny this and stick with the Selkie tales.
It’s true the Ancient Celts we’re descended from the tribes of Israel, who migrated from the cradle of civilization in Africa. We are all from the same place.
@@sarahempie1944 While it is true the Celts traveled and settled in Ireland as well as other lands such as Scotland, the Celts and True original Irish were 2 separate peoples. DNA evidence recently uncovered proves it. Celts ≠ Irish, although yes they obviously intermingled eventually. Not sure about the Scotish history. Both Countries had the Selkie myth, so who knows who came up with it first. Interestingly enough, an ancient jaw bone discovered in Europe has proven to be older than the "Out if Africa" theory would allow, which has many in the scientific community questioning the validity of said theory. Starting to look like more of an "into Africa" theory. Exciting stuff if you are interested in human origins. Seals have dark slick fur and dark eyes, that's why the Selkies of legend have dark hair and black eyes.
Legend has it that my clan Macdubsithe or Macphee is descended from selkies. It is a lovely notion and I must say that genetically many in my family line have dark dark hair and dark gray eyes. Not to mention that I personally have a great love of the sea!
He should have give the skin back. If I was him I would have apologized and given back and asked if she could visit me and in her human form that way she could be free and not forced
What a beautiful story. Codram the youngest brother was the only brother who set his selkie bride free of his own free will. He was the only truly good and virtuous and righteous brother. So he got his selkie bride back in the end.
Folklore emerges quite directly in this film, as it constitutes the heart and identity of the protagonists. Roan Inish adapts the legend of the selkie, a not infrequent character of Celtic and northwest Teutonic folklore. These creatures swim as seals in the sea, but on land can take human form. Selkie stories are almost always love stories, and more often than not, they end in loss. Take, for instance, the Highland tale of Loch Duich: Three brothers went fishing in Loch Duich one night, and came upon a fantastic sight. A group of seals came ashore, slid out of their seal skins, and began dancing on the silvery sands. The three brothers could see their human forms and human skin glinting in the moonlight. Falling in love, the three brothers stole the seal skins of three dancing girls, who were unable to slip back into the sea as seals. Seeing his chosen partner begin to weep, the youngest brother took pity and returned her seal skin, allowing her to swim home. But the two older brothers took the seal-maidens as wives. Nine days later, the party of seals appeared. The elder brothers feared to lose their wives, and shut them away. But the youngest brother only gazed with love at the seal-maiden he had set free. Then her father appeared. He said that his daughter was equally in love, and as a reward for his kindness, he would allow his daughter to return to him every ninth night. The youngest brother and his seal-maiden were overjoyed. But the two elder brothers did not enjoy such a happy ending. One seal-wife found her skin again and left her husband and children forever. The other brother, thinking his own wife would do the same, burned her seal skin. The moment flames touched the skin, the seal-wife also burst into flames and perished.
Did anyone catch or know the word the selkie used for her sealskin? I seem to have heard candraoichan? I'm having trouble finding the word anywhere and I would love to study its etymology!
wmccrorieanimation wmccrorieanimation wow, it has an incredible vintage quality to it - it reminds me of the wonderful animated children’s book videos from the 50s and 60s we used to get from the library when I was little, and it’s beautifully read and written - thanks so much for sharing! 💙🧜♀️
my grandma is from donie gaul which i no i have spelt correct and she told me the story of the salke and she would save all the people from that part of ireland l had the salke blood in them but i just thort it was all just made up until i sa the film lof roan enish and it mentioned her village of bally buffay lol and it gave me ghoce pimples
Selkies are shapeshifters. On land, they're human, but when they put on they're seal coats/seal skins and jump into the water, they turn into seals. If a man took a female selkie's skin, she had to marry him, but if she didn't want it, she would try to get it back and run away into the sea, as it the first selkie did. If the man destroyed the seal skin, the selkie would die, as it happened to the second selkie. The third brother didn't force the third selkie into anything, so she returned his feelings and married him.
I'd spend a long time in the oceans like a viking on one of there ships. But I'd watch out for those Hippogriffs from My Little Pony. They are wild and sexy like a Siren.
Unlike his brothers, Goddhram initated contact with the selkie, and treated her gently.
Glad to find ONE happy ending among so many tragic ones.
I like the ending of this story. They loved each other so much that they could be free in their own places, and yet still be happily together.
It’s a lovely ending
I’m from Ireland and grew up on stories such as this. When I was a wee my brother’s used to trick me into watching the sea for their Selkie brides.
You should prank them back by getting a woman to walk out of the sea with a seal skin xD
@@cassidyho939 😆 fun idea.
The last selkie bride's fate made me sad, instead of returning to the sea she was lost in the flames of fire

Ignoring the fact that selkies can just as well be male :P
Goddhram was the only one who truly loved his bride. Loved her so much as to let her go. It was this that caused her to return to him.
Ben Siener no need to be snarky, probably a child

Yes, because the first Celts, or rather the Picts were Indo-Europeans and would have been fairy olive skinned c:
That is interesting, but how, then, are they now the very fairest of skin tones?

Lovely animation and story. You will most assuredly love, "The Secret of Roan Inish."
Once every ninth night? Sounds like an amicable arrangement.
Beautiful telling of the selkie tale. Your animation adds a sensitivity to the whole tale. Very beautiful, just like the selkies themselves.
Idk why, but I always find this story so soothing

Now, THAT was an excellent video!!
A beautiful animation and fond childhood memories. Thanks a lot for uploading this.
wonderful animation and a hauntingly fiddle indeed...
I have named my new Ragdoll kitten Selkie because I have just lost my partner of 24 years.
Sorry for your loss. That is a sweet name for a cat. Hope she likes fish. WMc

It's like listening to a ghost story and a tall tale mix in one.
This is beautiful.

VERY nice animation!!!
What a fantastic story.
beautifully executed and narrated
Beautiful story
This is fantastic! Thanks for posting.
All the brothers in this fairy tale are possessive and self-entitled.
I mean, the third brother is not. He decided not to force her into anything.
You missed the point of the story completely.
Great story.
This is so gorgeous in every way. Does anyone know of any similar videos? Like folk stories with animation?
The Secret of Roan Inish references selkies
So beautiful!❤️

Selkies are known in Scotland as well as in Ireland.
