Fixing My Garrett Pro Pointer. (Hopefully :) )

- I like my Garrett Pro Pointer, but recently it had started falsing an awful lot.
There is much comment on TreasureNet and my local Paydirt forum about this issue. So I followed their advise. So far so good. I guess after a few years things seals may not be as water tight as they once were, but in my case I had wire touching where they really shouldn't have. - Розваги
Excellent sir, thank you! I have 2 of these buggers that have been giving me more and more false signal trouble the more I use them. I cleaned the board with canned air and used a piece of black electrical tape to keep the red/black wires from lying on the board.
Boom, problem solved! Both work better than new now and they are 7 years old.
Just did it mine and it works great now! Thanks to your video. Saved 27 dollars plus repairs and 2 week wait. Thanks again!
Thanks for the video, mine just started acting up after 2 years of working great. I just cleaned it out a bit and repositioned those wires and she sounds good again. The Orange one has a different switch by the way, it looks more solid than the old black ones.
Here's a couple of helpful ideas to your problems;
1) placing a plastic bag inside the pointer is not a good idea as it can hold condensation, and after a while, it will short or become erratic in operation as the plastic rubs against the circuit board. If your only worried about the wires not contacting each other due to broken shellac, use a product called liquid rubber and dab on with a brush. This will stiffen and re-insulate each wire.
2) placing a thin amount of liquid rubber over the sealing edges on the power switch can help to water tight that area. If you pull off the switch again you will have to reapply the sealant.
3) The speaker and led hole are notorious for letting in water, so applying to these locations will also seal the unit up. You will still be able to hear it after sealing. The Led is next to useless for brightness, and just removing it and sealing the hole is the better method as covering the led with sealant will black it out anyway.
Liquid rubber or liquid electrical tape is available at marine and boating supply stores, in small touch up containers. Micromark in the USA also carries a small touch up sizes.
4) packing paper in the end is also not a good idea around a water / battery. If the self stick cushion wears out, then replace it with another self stick cushion. Their available at most electronic supply stores, or home hardware supply stores, even dollar stores.
Mine started to do the same thing after just one year. Watched your video and had it fixed in 5 min. Exactly the same problem. The red spray-on insulation wore thru and shorted onto the component board. A couple small pieces of black tape and back together. It is a pain to get the board slid back in because of the wire inside but it can be done.
Try to put some rubber packing around your battery to stabilize it & keep it from moving around. Mine works a lot better after that ?? Good luck 👍✌️
Thanks for this video. Just fixed mine. I was almost ready to throw it away.
just sent one back and received it a couple of days ago and used it saturday for not even 10 minutes and guess what doing the same thing again. It just starts vibrating on it's own with no metal near it. The invoice you got has the same repairs they did on mine. But now my other garrett pin-pointer is doing the same thing they need to do a recall on these. I noticed a lot of people with the same problems.
good job !!!
Nice ring ! I bought some liquid tape the other day for the boat, its very runny, messy as it takes ages to dry, but would work. I've been through a vibraprobe, pistol probe, and I have two pro pointers (one brand new ready for breakdowns lol). Recently mine started falsing, I cut up springy pool foam for backing, so far so good. Taped up the button and speaker to stop mud getting in. Aussies are more careless than Kiwis, couldn't find anything but Golums greenstone ring when there! Cheers!
Bought one of these, didn't read the directions because I saw people submerging them in water on UA-cam. What I didn't know is they had waterproofed the units. My unit failed after one hour in a river. Opened it up, switch exploded, then I read the directions, you can't submerse these. I have to put mine back together and will plastic coat the unit.
I've made videos of repairing the switch on 2 of these pro pointers. Not a really big deal. I think the cracks in the varnish is a bigger deal than keeping the "U" in the wires. The plastic was a great idea but I worry now if they might touch each other inside. I use small medical clamps to feed the coil wires down as I reinsert the board, then again, i've yet to put one back together with an intact switch. Thanks for the education.
Thanks for the helpful tips. Mine is doing exactly the same as yours. I emailed Garrett in Australia without any success so I'll give your suggestions a go.
Eight years later...
Thanks for the great tips. Mine was falseing just like yours real bad, my switch fell apart but was able to put back together (barely) and used electrical tape over the board. Works perfect now but will do a field test tomorow. Thanks HH subbed ya
Desolder the two coil wires slip some heat shrink over them if you run a minelab 4500 or 5000 these resonate ter detector coil put a 1 k resistor across the coil with a switch as even with it off the wire coil is resonate with the minelab coils on the 5000 and 4500s. THESE ARE OK WITH VLF MACHINES BUT NOT PULSED INDUCTION.
Biggest falsing problem with Garrett Pro Pointers is very fragile Ferrite coil i the tip of Pro Pointers, if Pro Pointer starts making signal after very little pressure on the tip, ferrite coil rod is broken and not much possible to do. I took off pro pointer coil by cutting my few pro pointers and found coils are broken. Very bad design made NOT to last.
I'm having the exact same problem with my pointer. Pointer is clean but as soon as you turn it on and start to move it goes crazy and usually ends with a constant tone. Batteries are new .. I feel you brother. It's bothersome. Very inconvenient to return it to garrett and voids warranty when you home repair. Hope you find a solution. HH
Excellent
I hope that fixes it. I was wondering if you could use nail polish or some type of a paint or silicone to coat the wires. I guess they are hard to get to though.
Try getting some small diameter "shrink tube". carefully un solder each red wire, put a piece of shrink tube on, shrink it, repeat on the other one, re solder both wires, then voila your pinpointer is fixed. The wires naturally fold over the circuit board and touch the tops of the other components causing it to false.
Hi Larry I will try that haha should do a video on it too. Just that after a couple of years it has started to do it again.
Gosh Should have been making more M/D vids but bought a hobby shop, and where did my time go... haha
I think spray adhesive should make a nice coating for those wires.
I stick my propointer in a large double snap lock bag...sometimes 2....Waterproof right there!!!
stemart1641 Brilliant! Simple and easy, I'll think I will do the same.. :)
(:
+Joel P Haa!! Yeah hopefully the dull yellow kind....big!!
Yeah well, the cooler months are upon us....you never know
i have o problem.i have a pinpointer garrett.saltwater entered inside and broke down.how can I fix it?
Mines going in the trash, and will never buy another Garrett pro pointer. They have problems, and the fix did not work for me....! I've just bought the deteknix, hope it is as good as the reviews are, should have it buy the end of week....!
Sadly mine is doing the same again I will have to pull it apart again. I just hope that I haven't cracked the resin that embeds the coil otherwise I will be looking at another model too.
use some clear coat, or clear nail varnish, new switches can also be bought $1.39 FOR 10 IF NEEDED
Chuck it in the bin and get a Tacklife pinpointer i had one of these original garretts and had the same problems. i bought the Tacklife for £26 its got all the same features plus more and its Ip68 waterproof I put it in a bucket of water for 30mins no problems.
I periodically take mine apart and spray canned air on the control board.
My pinpoint garret its not vibrate why?
them 2 little red wires is the problem cover them with elecrical tape or duct tape .or even better put a peice of tubing over them cheers john
I had the same problem
What happened at 9:35? Bit of a brain fart? :-D
i think put a new battery at first ,it was my fail on my poipointer garret who make evrerytime noise
Excalibur
lol love the cat
type in OLDGOLD1100 hes cracked it
its not waterproof at all ... the at pointer is
Plastidip the whole damn thing
check this vid out it works guys
