    I had forgotten my mom's version but after seeing your process, you reminded everything my mom had taught me.. not to be taken in a negative way though.
    Saute first with ginger, garlic, desired condiments and spices in 2 tbsp ghee. There are two methods to add dal-rice combo then-
    1) Add & saute the soaked dal and rice for a few minutes and then the drained water
    2) Add in the dal-rice mixture with water and simply pressure cook it.
    With water drained, it should be done in 2 whistles. With water added with dal and rice, it should be done in 2 whistles (on high flame) and 10-15 minutes on low flame. Water is generally measured at twice the quantity of dal/rice combined. Add a spoonful of ghee while serving hot and its yum!

    Take a note, first into a pan add oil and ghee, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, bay leaves, ginger, garlic, kalonji seeds, black pepper corns, red chilli, green chilli, asafoetida, onion, tomatoes. Curry leaves, Mix all this well, cook until the oil separates. Add in the soaked dal and rice sauté it for about 5 minutes. Add salt to taste, add water close the pressure cooker, after 10 minutes after the steam has subside open the cooker add garam masala, fenugreek dried leaves, add water to the consistency you want it to be. Fry the cauliflower, carrots, green peas, potatoes, french beans, add it into the khichdi. Finally add a piece of butter and stir well, garnish it with fresh coriander leaves. You have yourself the best dal ever. I use three types of dals when making khichdi. Moong, masoor, and tur dal. Cooking is all about experimenting. I just share the way i cook for those who like to try something different and versatile way of cooking,

    I'm making this tomorrow and,....I can't wait!!!! Looks awesome!
    I lived in Central New Jersey that had an enormous Indian population so I cooked Indian food all the time. Since moving to Northern NJ where there is a huge Korean population, I primarily cook Korean food all the time however, I miss eating Indian food...a lot.
    Watching your videos motivates me to drive back into central New Jersey to buy my Indian products. Yay!
    The best part after your recipes is listening to your voice, it's so incredibly poetic!!! And your use of words makes me want to continue listening and listening and listening getting absolutely nothing done in my life...hee, hee.
    I have a pressure cooker but it doesn't whistle so I'll have to just see how it goes.
    I'll let you know how it turned out.

    So, I just finished eating a bowl, a very, very, very small bowl of the Moong Dal Khichdi. Whew! Very filling! I wouldn't say it was light but it was good and flavorful. This is definitely the kind of thing that one would be wanting to eat after shoveling two feet of snow off of your car.

    Hi Gurjit, thanks for the recipe.
    What rice do you use? American short grain or some indian variety (which one? Sona Masoori?)?
    Why don't just cook with all the water instead of adding more later?

    May I ask why you say not basmati? What rice do you use or did you use? Is not brown rice or brown basmati beneficial?

      Tukda or split rice is used in khichdi because they are not long and they are better for khichdi
