Hey Sarah! A little bit of wise advice. To me if the tool you needed was only going to cost $31.00, I think even though I totally understand you being price savey I would have rather spent that money and saved time and your hard work then maybe having to do it all over again. Does this make sense? You also said your cabinets in the laundry and bathroom were peeling, so you could use it there as well! I think the money would be worth it in the long run. Look how much you would use it, honey? Your home has come a long way and it looks ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! GREAT JOB SARAH!!!! ❤️
Sarah, be absolutely sure that under that vinyl it’s not pressed wood or particle board. The surface will not be smooth, plus where the glue is holding the laminate/ vinyl on it will be difficult to smooth that as well. So, maybe let your paint cure for a couple days then add second or third coat. I would definitely put on a clear sealer, otherwise your paint will chip off. Good luck sweet girl. I painted my kitchen but my cabinets were solid wood. Plus, I use a paint specifically for kitchen cabinets. The longer it was on the cabinets the harder it got. Been 3 years now & still looks good. No chipping. Amazon makes a cabinet paint. Check it out. 😊❤😊🙏
Hi Sarah, I have never painted vinyl wrapped cabinets, but I have painted over vinyl wall paper. I live in a 1910 farmhouse. I tried removing the wallpaper and the plaster started crumbling. We were not prepared to remove lathes and plaster, so I filled in the wallpaper seams, used 2 coats of valspar bonding primer, then 2 coats of paint, letting each dry completely before starting the next coat. That was 3years ago and I've never had any issues.
I use chalk paint. It seems to stick to everything....I didnt even have to sand my cabinets. you just have to put polyacrylic over it....to like seal it...its the shiny layer.
Hi Sarah... I admire you for doing this yourself. I wouldn't know where to start. Hope it turns out ok, without spending over your budget. Good Luck. Can't wait to see when your home is just the way you want.
Always looking forward to watching your videos. Really admire all the work you put in to make your home beautiful, and how you succeed. You are absolutely real, a 😢person I can relate to, we're generations apart but we share values . You are a source of inspiration.
Hi Sarah.I so admire you working hard in your home to make it your own. It will definitely be worth it to buy the heat gun and get the vinyl coating off first.I know it's more work and will take longer but in the end it will hold up well! You are a very ambitious and patient gal!!I know it will look great when you are done!!!😁🎉❤
It looks great. I understand your thoughts and hesitation. Maybe your not letting the paint cure enough? I would let it sit for a few days before applying a second coat. Wish we were all there to help. What does your hubs say??
I live in a manufactured home too. I painted my cabinets years ago ( 10ish) I used Kilz primer. It sticks to shiny surfaces! Mine has held up really well. I think leaving lots of dry time between coats is really helpful. Mine are also Swiss Coffee 😊 I hope you can find a solution. Love your budget home makeover!!! 💕( I watched again and saw you used Kilz. So I’m not sure 🤔)
I can’t remember the name of it, but there is a primer out there, I beilieve from Behr, we got it at Home Depot, I asked the paint desk what to use to paint vinyl shutters and she suggested this primer. It worked amazing! The shutters have been on the house for 5 years in the Saskatchewan elements and haven’t chipped or peeled. We only did one coat of the primer as well. Good luck with your project, it will look amazing when you’re done! Sorry I can’t remember the name of the primer 🤦♀️
Have you tried a blow dryer to help remove the vinyl? Worth a try on some that are already peeling to see if it works before the expense of a heat gun.
Sarah, Just curious, if the vinyl is peeling, can you peel it off by hand? My sister was able to do that and then painted her cabinets after priming. They look amazing. I like that you are trying to stay within a budget
