As a kid i never noticed that Classic Thomas and Friends would act grown up but after re-watching it i began 2 c how serious and realistic they were trying 2 be.
Thomas and the breakdown train is also a personal favorite of mine. It portrays the gravity of a runaway crash really well. Even tho the crash happens off screen, the suspense of seeing what becomes of James builds interest and progresses the story. Thomas is shocked, and is called into action when he gets news of James going off the line. Coupled with the fact that Thomas struggles back and forth to haul the cranes down to pick up James, it shows Thomas’s sense of responsibility and how he feels sorry for others’ misfortunes when usually he’s poking fun at them.
So. Fun Fact (or not so fun fact): in the flying kipper crash, the other engine's driver and fireman were the only ones to get out of that brakevan. the third guy was still in it when Henry hit it. the narrator outright says that the driver and fireman got out but says NOTHING about the other guy. which means he was very likely crushed to death in that crash.
I remember watching this video before I decided to binge watch S1 at 1am at my friend's house during a sleepover. It's so interesting how "The Flying Kipper" used to be alien words to me.
Here are my top 11 episodes that people should appreciate more. 1. Follow That Flour 2. Reds Vs Blues 3. Better Late Than Never 4. It’s Good To Be Gordon 5. Big Strong Henry 6. James Works It Out 7. Snow Tracks 8. Muddy Matters 9. Heave Ho Thomas (Plz don’t hate me for this) 10. Hector The Horrid 11. Respect For Gordon (because everyone loves this one)
I’m glad this video is back up and it reminds me how everyone who knew me in life knew that I liked Thomas. I collected every ERTL train until they were discontinued and every video that no matter how bad the series got I always went back to the old ones for the memories and those moments shared with those around me.
I am going to be honest with you here: I did grew up in the classic era of Thomas and friends as a kid growing up in the 1990's, but I have always found the trains creepy and scary looking on TV. When the Show switch to CGI when I was older it was there I rediscovered my enjoyment of the show, but by then I found a modern fascination with how this time in the CGI era of Thomas that the trains could finally show a bit more emotions within themselves. However, after seeing your videos and dedication to the original classic era of Thomas and Friends I must say that I am impress with how much you express your own enjoyment within these episodes in the original series stop motion era. So to make a long story short: Please do keep up your great work on this amazing UA-cam retrospective channel on Thomas and Friends. P.S. I did enjoy the Thomas and the Magic Railroad film as it was a great movie to watch on a quiet night home alone.
I've noticed something with some of the highest praised kids shows ala Avatar The Last Airbender, Bluey, Early Thomas etc. They're praised for treating kids with a sense of intelligence and maturity. They present complicated and confronting topics like loss and standing up to an authority figure with a simpleness that is digestible but not so dumb it loses it's message.
Thomas the Tank Engine is the reason I'm a railfan, both during my youth and in the present day. If it weren't for this little blue tank engine and his many adventures, trains and railroading wouldn't be such a big part of my life. Also, it doesn't surprise me the show has an adult fanbase, especially in a world where the MLP/Brony community exists (which I happen to be a part of, by the way).
Same here. It's actually what got me invested into looking into different types of engines that exist irl, such as the Flying Scotsman and Olton Hall. Speaking of Hall, it's also actually the reason why I got into Harry Potter in the first place, as well as LoTR and Star Wars.
Before this video I hadn’t thought of this series in close to a decade. I’d gone to high school and stopped watching pretty much as soon as the cgi era started. This video popped up on my feed and the nostalgia wave hasn’t ended. Thank you for helping me get through quarantine and helping me remember the best parts of my childhood 🤙
Jim Henson always feared that he would just be seen as the popular kiddie puppet man. And sadly, that's exactly what happened. He tried to pitch his other ideas like the Dark Crystal to close-minded idiots who don't want any sort of nuance, and want to be spoon-fed tropes and biases exploited by soulless executives.
I agree with you on a lot of the points you made for these episodes. Although most people may argue that Stepney Gets Lost is darker than Duncan Gets Spooked. Come to think of it, Season 5 did have a lot of episodes that were the epitome of experimental. The ones you mentioned were definitely experimental along with some you didn’t mention like Rusty and the Boulder. I’m criticizing the list or anything. I’m just saying that Rusty and the Boulder is also really experimental.
Wonderful~ I do have to say, as also an adult Thomas fan, that Awdry's writings have inspired me to ever take up writing seriously. Even if some are silly little fanfictions... But every reason I've ever loved TandF is perfectly explained!
@@Scrinwaipwr Thank you 💙💜 It is a story that tells about how organic beings are simply not compatible in a cybernetic war. Lots to do with Andromedae and the afterlife/reincarnation. I'm currently working on finalizing an edit to release for all to read! Like Awdry, I'm very passionate about my story 😅
The discussion at the beginning is cool, I’m a grown man, but I still find myself enjoying shows, specifically animated, that can be geared towards kids, but I still love it all Similar to the quote,”Animation is a *medium*, not a genre”, a property like Thomas, especially more towards the classic era, can still be enjoyed by people of many ages
It’s really a shame that after all the down times of the HIT model seasons and the Nitrogen seasons. Mattel allowed the Arc/Jam-filled seasons 17-21 to do so well at recapturing the charm of Thomas, only for Mattel to stupidly make the show fall again with BWBA and the AEG reboot!!!
I personally would have put rusty and the boulder on the list simply due to the fact that it doesn’t always follow the established standard and it also had some of the biggest action scenes in the series leading up to that point, even having a full on explosion on screen
My favorite Andrew Brenner Thomas episodes Old reliable Edward aka Gordon gets tricked and Thomas being a troll Calm down Caitlin Duncan and grumpy passenger Red vs blue Wild water 💧 rescue 🛟 3 steam engines gruff Henry in the dark
Notice how they are all the episodes are form the model era and not not a single one is CGI, Says a lot to me about the massive drop in quality the show took in the years that followed .
@@theholygamer969 it's much more about the writing; about lore adherence, about consistency of characterisation and character development, etc (or lackthereof when it comes to HiT and Nitrogen etc.)
The model and classic era is how the stories should have gone once it moved to CG…Audrey never wanted to talk down to kids but the writers sure did and a series that could have gone on so much longer was axed and ultimately replaced with not Thomas for the next generation Also do you still have that top 10 vid?
I’ve said it in the original video, but I will say it again. I personally believe that Bob the Builder and most other British kids shows like Fireman Sam or Postman Pat shouldn’t be likened to Dora the Explorer or Caillou either, as they (used to) have such good writing and characters, and at least didn’t annoy the hell out of the parents watching them with their kids. Still a really good video for non-Thomas fans to understand the adult appeal of Thomas the Tank Engine.
Blame general Americans who pigeonholed them as annoying dumb baby shows. The shows that you mentioned really needed some more respect in a way how people respect Veggietales.
11 episodes isn’t nearly enough. I’d recommend the first five seasons back to back. Season 6 is obviously not perfect. In fact, out of the very few “stinker” episodes in the classic series, most of them lie in season 6. but to me, it’s very nostalgic and does have some good episodes
Speaking of episode lists… Remember those “Best Of” character DVD’s? This may be controversial, but what about a “Worst Of” DVD collection? See your favorite Thomas characters in their most mediocre adventures ever! In “Worst of Thomas,” see Thomas careen off a twenty-foot high pier, leaving zero injuries, and drop off some chickens to an elementary school where they’re unloaded without question. In “Worst of Henry” chill as Henry forgets how to pull coaches all of a sudden, becomes afraid of polka dots, and prays to a tree. In “Worst of Percy” thrill as an episode that’s mostly about Gordon also briefly features our lovable green pipsqueak butchering the English language. In “Worst of James, Volume 1,” try to guess which color he’ll be painted in the next episode. I’d be riveted actually. Laughing at the bad episodes could be almost as much fun as appreciating the good.
I know most of the episodes you're referring to, but I'm not sure about these: "Thomas careen off a twenty-foot high pier" Something Fishy? "an episode that’s mostly about Gordon also briefly features our lovable green pipsqueak butchering the English language." Spic and Span?
I remember being like 8th grade and some kid found out I liked thomas and said it was weird I liked a baby show I tried to explain to him that I don't like that garbage new stuff, but he wouldn't listen

“But you know what else is aimed at kids and has adult followings? _Mario_ , _SpongeBob_ , _Sonic_ , _Transformers_ , _The Muppets_ , _VeggieTales_ , Disney movies, f**king _Sesame Street_ …” Don’t forget _My Little Pony_ ! 😉
I also loved the classic series as a kid and at 34 years old, I'm definitely not ashamed to admit that I still enjoy the classics. It's sad that when many people think of Thomas today, they see it as nothing but brainless and babyish; something only for toddlers. I watched Thomas (Seasons 1-3) until I was around 7 or so because it offered something for everyone. Watching classic episodes always felt like I was going on an epic adventure along with the characters and many episodes had elements of mystery, suspense and even a hint of danger (such as “Escape,” along with the dark implications.) I have some of Junior Campbell & Mike O’Donnell’s compositions on my iPod because the original soundtrack was that good. I can’t forget about the advanced and descriptive vocabulary the classic series used. How many of us learned difficult (at least for a young child) words like conceited, indignation/indignant, deputation and festoon (and many, many more) from watching Thomas? I watched a few modern episodes over the years with my nephews and it's a far cry from the classic era in that it’s definitely aimed at the toddler demographic. That’s fine of course, but I think that’s where many people get the “Thomas is for babies” idea from. To me, it feels as if modern Thomas suffers from the “it's for children, so it has to be childish” mindset. It’s a mentality that believes children can’t handle anything too dark or serious, so everything has to be bright, bouncy and non-threatening. I can’t imagine an episode with the implications and dark tone of “Escape” in the modern era. I think after so many years of being watered-down, people forgot that Thomas used to be quite serious and mature and treated its child audience with dignity, much like Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood (I wouldn't be surprised if that has an adult following, even decades after Rogers' death and the show's cancellation.) For the most part, the stories were grounded in reality (for example, accidents were taken much more seriously than in the modern era.) Modern Thomas is so watered-down, bouncy and non-threatening that I'm not shocked when Thomas is regarded as just a brainless "baby" show (as I said before, many of the crashes and accidents now are laughed off as “those silly engines haha!”) It’s kind of like how Pokémon games are often unfairly painted with the "just for kiddies" brush (despite appealing to a wide audience) because the target demographic is kids. Just because a series is targeted at kids, doesn't mean adults can't appreciate the content. Thomas fostered my love for railways which exists to this day (and it introduced me to Ringo Starr, and by extension, The Beatles.) I hope many people see this video and realize there are adult Thomas fans out there.
If you're going to watch 'Close Shave For Duck' I recommend watching the two episodes that come before it 'Pop Goes The Diesel' and 'Dirty Work' sometimes known as The Duck and Diesel trilogy.
I used to think A Close Shave for Duck is a bit goofy with the barbershop, but i just recently found out it's based on real-life tragedy And to top it all off Harold healey, one of the owner of the barbershop claims when a train hit his barbershop, he just stand for a moment then continuing on shaving his costumer, so i guess the barber reaction on the series is not too far off, lol
Thank you so much Mr. Unlucky Tug, this video just further more proves my point to everyone in my life that Thomas and Friends is not just for kids, but for anyone who wants to watch it! Thank a you so fricking much Unlucky Tug!!! Awesome fricking job!!!!!
7:09 You don't say. Duck staring through the wall of the barbershop with his huge dinner plate eyes and mouthless foam beard creeped me the hell out when I was a kid!
Call me crazy but I think Middle Engine would be a good episode to show people. Why? Because it’s a perfect example of a bad episode and that way you’re not singing Thomas so many praises, even this show can have flaws
I grew up with Thomas & Friends, specifically the early model series (Series 1-4, specifically). I could never get into the series from Baldwin onwards. In hindsight, Baldwin's reputation also didn't help. Never got a chance to read the Railway series, sadly. That said, I am not ashamed of being an adult fan of Thomas & Friends. I was even thinking of starting to collect model trains BECAUSE Thomas made me love locomotives/steam engines.
10:17 The fact in the video is In 60s Diesel loco came out to phase out steam locos Now in 20th century the countries who undergoes electrification process, the electric locos phase out Diesel locos. History repeats each time of a loco
This video (and the respect for Gordon mtakks) singlehandedly got me into the fandom way back in 2021 and i love it for that. It made me realize the layers, and groudedness of this charming little show at the time and made me love it again no matter what anyone thought
You can say most series been dumbed down for younger fans (and this is not me saying young fans can't enjoy this series). That is kinda just shoving old fans out of the demographic. Like csgo, spongebob, my hero academia, pixar cars, Star Wars, Marvel and dc, thomas, and etc. But I'm glad some old fans stick with the series and even help younger fans to be part of the fandom.
I like how kid shows and it's a dark elements back in the day so it can be for kids and adults but that's not kid shows today disgraceful disgusting despicable
I think part of the misunderstanding of Thomas comes from the fact that even the classic seasons were undoubtedly pitched toward a somewhat younger audience than things like Transformers and Mario are. No one bats an eye when someone is a fan of a franchise aimed at ten-year-olds, but if it's aimed at six or seven-year-olds? Whoa, there's a line. That's silly, in my opinion. Kids are kids, and shows aimed at younger children can still be clever and intelligent. I'm convinced the RWS and the classic seasons taught me far more vocabulary words than school did when I was a kid!
What Kids Don't Realize In The Flying Kipper Episode, Is That The Narrator Only Mentions The Crew Leaving The Brake Van, That Henry Crashes Into. The Guard Is Still In There, Because The Lights Are Still On Inside of It. So, The Poor Guy Dies In That Van and His Fate Isn't Mentioned.
I would really add to this playlist rusty and the boulder. I think its the episode with a really good message: humans should take care of the nature and stop interfering everywhere. And also that no one believes rusty that the boulder was giving them a message and still was right at the end… its just so good I think

Kinda; he also had a few CGI episodes in the original Top 10 video like "Last Train For Christmas"
THESE episodes should have been the content for The Greatest Stories DVD.
Here are my top 11 episodes that people should appreciate more.
1. Follow That Flour
2. Reds Vs Blues
3. Better Late Than Never
4. It’s Good To Be Gordon
5. Big Strong Henry
6. James Works It Out
7. Snow Tracks
8. Muddy Matters
9. Heave Ho Thomas (Plz don’t hate me for this)
10. Hector The Horrid
Same here. It actually got me into all different types of engines irl, from lner to lms ones.
I’m so thankful that this video isn’t lost media, I loved the way he broke down each of these episodes and their attributes.
UA-cam really screwed up when they terminated his channel.
0:33 The Muppets were actually originally made for adult audiences.
Good fan fiction is what keeps it alive these days - it certainly isn't the official content being produced!
The chase scene in Close Shave is so memorable, the Trucks really feel like little bastards.
The discussion at the beginning is cool, I’m a grown man, but I still find myself enjoying shows, specifically animated, that can be geared towards kids, but I still love it all
Similar to the quote,”Animation is a *medium*, not a genre”, a property like Thomas, especially more towards the classic era, can still be enjoyed by people of many ages
If you could choose one of the 2 BWBA or AEG which 1 would be worse than the other?
I personally would have put rusty and the boulder on the list simply due to the fact that it doesn’t always follow the established standard and it also had some of the biggest action scenes in the series leading up to that point, even having a full on explosion on screen
So you took a page from the Nostalgia Critic. “Why 11? Because I like to go one step beyond!” 😁
Thomas the Tank Engine was a slice-of-life show with the main characters doing hard work and being a family... It wasn't supposed to be JUST for kids
One of my favorite videos of yours! And the one I used to introduce my best friend to my interest in Thomas and it helped a lot!
My favorite Andrew Brenner Thomas episodes
Old reliable Edward aka Gordon gets tricked and Thomas being a troll
Calm down Caitlin
Duncan and grumpy passenger
Red vs blue
Wild water 💧 rescue 🛟
3 steam engines gruff
Henry in the dark
Notice how they are all the episodes are form the model era and not not a single one is CGI, Says a lot to me about the massive drop in quality the show took in the years that followed .
None from the HiT era of the model series either for same reasons. Only seasons 1-5. The best seasons by far.
@@Scrinwaipwr my thoughts as well. The golden era.
That's what they get for chasing off the filmmakers who knew how to care for the models and keep them in pristine condition.
@@theholygamer969 it's much more about the writing; about lore adherence, about consistency of characterisation and character development, etc (or lackthereof when it comes to HiT and Nitrogen etc.)
To whoever saved this masterpiece, you are my hero!
The model and classic era is how the stories should have gone once it moved to CG…Audrey never wanted to talk down to kids but the writers sure did and a series that could have gone on so much longer was axed and ultimately replaced with not Thomas for the next generation
Also do you still have that top 10 vid?
Yeah
Thanks for giving Bob the Builder some well earned recognition.
On the other hand for every Grizzly Tales we have plenty of other shows that are indeed rather annoying to watch.
11 episodes isn’t nearly enough. I’d recommend the first five seasons back to back. Season 6 is obviously not perfect. In fact, out of the very few “stinker” episodes in the classic series, most of them lie in season 6. but to me, it’s very nostalgic and does have some good episodes
The fact we still do what every we want makes me feel free to watch series again
Just funny-bad, or will there be boring and cringeworthy episodes too?
I know most of the episodes you're referring to, but I'm not sure about these:
"Thomas careen off a twenty-foot high pier"
Something Fishy?
"an episode that’s mostly about Gordon also briefly features our lovable green pipsqueak butchering the English language."
Spic and Span?
It’s a shame how public perception really can be tainted so easily, showing how everyone always focuses on the negatives in our shallow society
I remember being like 8th grade and some kid found out I liked thomas and said it was weird I liked a baby show I tried to explain to him that I don't like that garbage new stuff, but he wouldn't listen
I'm so glad that someone was able to preserve this video. But the Unlucky tug, if you see this comment, 📫 post a reply saying to let me know if you think your 🚂 Thomas music video will be saved because I love that video so much and was very heartbreaking to mean when I heard it wasn't saved I would love to know about that please let me know please please please😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
For real, i dont watched a Thomas episode since like i was 7 (26 now)... but i love your content! And its crazy how i remember all the spots from the list from a show i didnt saw in 19 years, thats good writing!
And as a Brony myself i feel your argumentation about fandoms...
So great that someone saved this! I love this video not only because you had a lot of good picks but I also loved the ending message you shared.
“But you know what else is aimed at kids and has adult followings? _Mario_ , _SpongeBob_ , _Sonic_ , _Transformers_ , _The Muppets_ , _VeggieTales_ , Disney movies, f**king _Sesame Street_ …”
Don’t forget _My Little Pony_ ! 😉
We don't talk about that fandom.
Pokemon, Star Wars, Ninja Turtles, Mega Man, etc.
Rogers' Neighborhood (I wouldn't be surprised if that has an adult following, even decades after Rogers' death and the show's cancellation.)
For the most part, the stories were grounded in reality (for example, accidents were taken much more seriously than in the modern era.) Modern Thomas is so watered-down, bouncy and non-threatening that I'm not shocked when Thomas is regarded as just a brainless "baby" show (as I said before, many of the crashes and accidents now are laughed off as “those silly engines haha!”)
It’s kind of like how Pokémon games are often unfairly painted with the "just for kiddies" brush (despite appealing to a wide audience) because the target demographic is kids.
It feels a little bit weird that this video is above the newest one, but it's pretty good it's back either way
Tbh Thomas is kinda like what Star Wars is for a lot of people, you really ride off the highs with them in spite of how much crap there is
If you're going to watch 'Close Shave For Duck' I recommend watching the two episodes that come before it 'Pop Goes The Diesel' and 'Dirty Work' sometimes known as The Duck and Diesel trilogy.
After subscribing to you. I went and started rewatching all of the ‘classic’ episodes again. Oh what vivid memories it brought back
I used to think A Close Shave for Duck is a bit goofy with the barbershop, but i just recently found out it's based on real-life tragedy
And to top it all off Harold healey, one of the owner of the barbershop claims when a train hit his barbershop, he just stand for a moment then continuing on shaving his costumer, so i guess the barber reaction on the series is not too far off, lol
This is not a choice this is an instruction
I agree with this list
Thank you so much Mr. Unlucky Tug, this video just further more proves my point to everyone in my life that Thomas and Friends is not just for kids, but for anyone who wants to watch it! Thank a you so fricking much Unlucky Tug!!! Awesome fricking job!!!!!
The video has been saved from scrap!
This was the last vid i watched on the og channel before it got removed
3:06: And, unless it gets reuploaded, we might never see it again.
7:09 You don't say. Duck staring through the wall of the barbershop with his huge dinner plate eyes and mouthless foam beard creeped me the hell out when I was a kid!
Actually "Terrance The Tractor" has the first crash
I’m younger, but I’m mostly a part of the adult fandom.
Call me crazy but I think Middle Engine would be a good episode to show people. Why? Because it’s a perfect example of a bad episode and that way you’re not singing Thomas so many praises, even this show can have flaws
I have no words, this is amazing.
Season 6 was not that bad I think Dunkin Duncan is funny acting wise
10:17 The fact in the video is
In 60s Diesel loco came out to phase out steam locos
Now in 20th century the countries who undergoes electrification process, the electric locos phase out Diesel locos. History repeats each time of a loco
This video (and the respect for Gordon mtakks) singlehandedly got me into the fandom way back in 2021 and i love it for that. It made me realize the layers, and groudedness of this charming little show at the time and made me love it again no matter what anyone thought
First
You can say most series been dumbed down for younger fans (and this is not me saying young fans can't enjoy this series). That is kinda just shoving old fans out of the demographic. Like csgo, spongebob, my hero academia, pixar cars, Star Wars, Marvel and dc, thomas, and etc. But I'm glad some old fans stick with the series and even help younger fans to be part of the fandom.
Whenever someone say that Thomas is for kids, I put them in a choke hold until they take that outlandish claim back.
WE FINALLY HAVE IT
1:30 and that's never ever ever going to change
Says you.
@@KBY30 No, he's got a point.
Misconceptions last for a good long while, and you'd be surprised at how stupid the mass crowd can become.
Ok one last hurrah sure
I like how kid shows and it's a dark elements back in the day so it can be for kids and adults but that's not kid shows today disgraceful disgusting despicable
Best Unlucky Tug video. No contest.
I'm in my 50s and I loved the original series when it came out, as it was all models
Boutta send this to my entire family rn
Yup
Great episodes
Flying kipper is my personal favourite
And now we need too bring back the debunked series,(the one that proves sir topham has isn't evil)
Peak thumbnail design
Good job for finding it!
What Kids Don't Realize In The Flying Kipper Episode, Is That The Narrator Only Mentions The Crew Leaving The
Brake Van, That Henry Crashes Into. The Guard Is Still In There, Because The Lights Are Still On Inside of It. So,
The Poor Guy Dies In That Van and His Fate Isn't Mentioned.
I think in the book, it is said that the guard gets thrown out into the snow when Henry collides with the van.
@@KBY30, But Is It Said, That He's Okay?
@@PCMan8922 the waiting train’s crew pull him out and he’s okay. Then, the fireman yells at Henry for causing him to spill his hot cocoa.
I’m not an adult but I respect your opinion on Thomas the tank, trains are cool !
Yes! Ive been excited for this reupload!
I would really add to this playlist rusty and the boulder. I think its the episode with a really good message: humans should take care of the nature and stop interfering everywhere. And also that no one believes rusty that the boulder was giving them a message and still was right at the end… its just so good I think
Hey, he found it! The wonders of a healthy fanbase.
Anyone remember the unanswerable Thomas questions?
the kids watching the intro felt a lil awkward...
If kids do watch this *I imagine they do*
