I think the reason Flying Kipper had the top part cropped was because there was something in the top of the frame for one shot that they wanted to remove, but accidentally cropped the top of the frame for a longer sequence than intended (which led to Henry's nighttime run, while still beautiful, not AS beautiful as in the original version)
just that one scene took place during the day, the rest of the episode took place during the night, and then the final scenes took place the next morning.
The reason for this change was probably retroactive continuity. A mix up where they thought it being day was the problem, since the scene leads into night, so they made it night. However, it was actually correct.
Yeah... you can tell who didn't actually watch the episodes. The dialogue percy has is talking about his driver seeing the ghost train "last night".....implying that it's the next morning in daylight. I am pretty sure that is also in the original story by Christopher Awdry....so there.
@@jsax4heart Actually it was a story in No.26 Tram Engines by Wilbert Awdrey. This and Wooly Bear were written because the publisher wouldn't publish a book without Thomas in it so he split it in half as he didn't want to introduce Mavis while he appeared because he wanted Toby to be the one she interacted with.
I used to use the Restored versions for my remakes because, well… it’s the better audio quality lol, regardless, this video was really good. Good job, Joey!
Something tells me that when they were restoring rushes from old screen to rescanned hd, they probably couldn't rescan the original shots and only got to restore alternative shots.
I watched the restored versions with my daughter and saw Henry suddenly zoom out of shot…and the “watch out for the train” part and I never remembered them happening on my old VHS tapes that I’d watched to death…I had no idea they were added during the re-editing!
I hear the reason a lot of alternate takes were used WAS due to film damage! Personally, I would've just showed the original episodes the way they were originally made. They weren't broken, no need to fix!
In the 80s and 90s TV's in homes were nearly all still cathode ray tube sets which began noticably curving away at the edges of the picture, with the set's plastic frame normally overlapping that area to mask it. This meant that many TV shows that survive from the 50s-90s recorded and broadcast a slightly larger picture than would have been seen at home by the viewers, and that VHS releases of the time (with less lines of picture information available to them anyway) would also not reveal this fact. It was only with DVD releases in the late 90s and beyond, plus modern screens that rendered the whole picture right to the very edge of the frame, that these shows suddenly appeared to veiwers to have a larger picture than they had seen before, and it is now very common on DVDs and streaming to see shots from older shows that have random bits of equipment poking into the edge of the frame, particularly boom mics in live action programmes, because at the time they made those shows they knew the offending bit of equipment invading the frame would not actually be seen by viewers anyway so they never bothered to either do a retake (which was costly and time -comsuming in that era) or edit it out in post. It's possible that many of the instances in the restored 'Thomas' of being more zoomed out, and of revealing bits of equipment, are actually down to this effect. Possibly the oddly zoomed in ones are over zealous attempts to remove the more egregious examples of invading equipment, the ones they thought that modern viewers were most likely to spot if they left them in.
I also wonder why The Restored Version of Thomas Gets Tricked (USA Version of Thomas and Gordon) that was used for Sprout/Prime/Roku Channel with George Carlin's Narration had a brief snippet of Ringo Starr's Narration (In the scene of Thomas and Gordon arriving at Wellsworth, and Thomas getting on the Turntable), but it was somehow fixed for the Halloween DVD Release. It's also weird how many of George Carlin's Rare Narrations were found and somehow used in HQ for the Restored Versions.
Bruh now i feel lied to my entire life, sone scenes like the first scene in ghost train being in the day make me feel weird, it feels like im missing an entire chunk of thomas footage.
I haven't seen your content in years, wow you've gotten a lot better (and your content was still some of the best TTTE content)! Keep it up! Also that restored outtake in coal made me mad
The restored versions are fine in my opinion, but I agree that they do have a few screw-ups (in some like Thomas & Gordon, Coal, No Joke for James, Buzz Buzz, Trust Thomas, One Good Turn, Woolly Bear, Old Iron, Percy & the Signal, Break Van and The Deputation for example).
@JamesIsHere5 the reason why those fading transition are much earlier/later is because if they put it at the same time (you can see the old master footage cause you can see that in the S1 episode Toby And The Stout Gentleman.)
My best guess behind the weird cropping in certain scenes is likely that it's not that the film is damaged, but that they used alternate takes that had the camera adjusted to a slightly different angle, not unlike the scenes that used takes containing bloopers.
I remember seeing a Color Correction in the Restored Version of A Scarf For Percy that made the early morning look like night, but maybe it was dawn. It was a bit too dark nontheless. I even remember seeing some Bloopers in the Restored Version of Trust Thomas, which showed the Camera nudging up and down in a couple of shots. There should be a Meme with those Bloopers, but with the scene from SpongeBob of Patrick working the Camera in Squidward's Talk Show, but with him, of course, nudging the Camera up and down, and saying, "Upsy Daysy, Downsy Wownsy" repeatedly.
It’s kind of crazy that some the Thomas vhs tapes that were brought to dvd normally used the vhs masters of the episodes instead of the restored episodes until 2010.
What about the different USA 🇺🇸 Restored Versions of Thomas and Percy's Christmas/Mountain Adventure? The Version that was probably aired on Sprout and is on Prime/Roku Channel had the Original Audio with the extra UK 🇬🇧 Scenes that was out of sync on the Christmas Adventures/Ultimate Christmas DVD/VHS Releases, and it was somehow fixed for the 2009 Holiday Express DVD along with Lionsgate's Reprint of Ultimate Christmas, but the Unrestored/Out of Sync Version is on Universal's DVD Reprint. Wonder what happened with that particular Episode's Restoration.
Strangely Thomas’s official UA-cam channels has these restored versions as well as Amazon Prime. Not sure if the Sprout airings have these restored episodes.
I think so, as the S3 airing I have seen don't have the harsh yellow colours of the originals. Funny thing though, on Roku and KetchupTV streaming sites, the "restored" S1 and S3 are used, however the 1998-2003 Masters of S2 with original footage of the episode but the S5 intro and credits are used, but only for the UK dub.
I grew up watching the originals on VHS (yeah, I’m that old) and some of the editorial choices made on the remasters just didn’t make sense. Maybe they were trying to find better shots of the scene and were looking through the reels, perhaps without realising the lack of continuity, or they didn’t put the effort in because they seem to think that Thomas is purely for the young audience and they’re less likely to notice these things. But to us older fans, we noticed. And it was not good.
Never knew about these restored versions. They restored them all around 1998 for the VHS full series releases. These versions don't seem to have these issues.

I would stick with the original masters but it would've been better if the can just use computers to fix everything so that the original version of the episodes will look better in the newer restored style. Look at The Three Stooges, that classic is remastered and it looks really great. Same thing with Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, Gumby, Universal Monsters and more. The colors on them are really perfect in a HD style and the audio sinking is in the perfect spots. If Hit Entertain wants to restored Thomas, they need to take lessons from Warner Bros, Universal, Sony Home Entertainment, Shout! Factory and the rest of the studios.
