    In my opinion, the sky background in Fish when Henry climbs the hill makes sense why it looks like this. I mean given the fact Henry pulls the flying kipper around five in the morning, by the time he arrives at the hill, it does look like the sun would be setting in the morning soon and honestly as a kid, I’ve always loved that sky background as I thought it was beautiful and it definitely stood out to me, as an adult, this is easily my favorite sky background in Thomas the tank engine!
    It’s cool if you’re not a fan of the background, but me, I absolutely love it!

    Yeah okay but every season of the classic series has a major flaw:
    Season 1 -> Very boring first half
    Season 2 -> Distracting goofs
    Season 3 -> Weirdly a lot of uneventful episodes
    Season 4 -> Very unfocused second half
    Season 5 -> A lot of merchandise characters already

    I can say about both narrators is that Carlin speaks like an older American accent from around the 50s shows... I do think that personally. And Angelis, he does speak a lot slower than Series 3, 5 and 6. But more energetic than Series 7 and the rest of the Hit era.
    Henry and The Elephant's ending in the book is good. You would have loved to see Gordon and James being sympathetic. Thomas would have definitely been the one who have laughed at Henry's misfourtune.

    The thing with Henry and the Elephant was that it led into ‘Tenders and Turntables’, which expanded on the big engines becoming aggrieved. I also expect the reason they didn’t do ‘Bull’s Eyes’ in Season 2 with the other Daisy stories is because it was too similar to ‘Cows’ from the same season. I can understand why they wouldn’t want to put two ‘cow on the line’ stories in one season.

  • @jaanshersaeed4541
    @jaanshersaeed4541 9 днів тому +1

    The continuity of the narrow gauge engines is really confusing;
    -Apparently knowing the map stuff now the Skarloey and Mid Sodor lines went alongside each other so why were they different companies instead of just one
    -How was Sir Handel unfamiliar with Skarloey (did he just not bother wanting to get to know him or Rheneas) or Gordon (did he not bring trains down to Crovan’s Gate much)
    -Why couldn’t Duke have just been taken in by the Skarloey Railway after the MSR closed (did they just not have enough money to buy him)
    -Same case for Sir Handel and Peter Sam where for that matter where did they even go after the MSR closed; we saw the MSR sheds fine when the line closed yet it was in ruins in the flashback for Gallant Old Engine the “year before” SH and PS arrived on the Skarloey Railway meaning they went somewhere else likely privately owned nearby for a brief period of time probably like the Aluminum Works in the RWS
    -If the Skarloey Railway is some huge loop, how did Skarloey and Rheneas run the whole thing on their own? We could say there were more engines before (Proteus and Rusty’s Ghost Engine could’ve been real) but between the time the MSR closed and Sir Handel and Peter Sam went off wherever before joining how could they run the whole huge thing alone? Guess they had to try really hard even more so than the RWS where the line’s more smaller.
    -Duke shows up on the Skarloey Railway before Rusty and Duncan yet he has no number while they’re #s 5 and 6, so did they decide he’d still keep his MSR heritage and he’d unofficially remain Mid Sodor #1 instead of being renumbered into the Skarloey Railway system
    -Duncan cameos on the MSR in Bulldog and even more randomly cameos again on the Skarloey Railway in Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady before he even arrives on the Skarloey Railway (do we just imagine he could’ve been a Mid Sodor engine as their #6 before going off somewhere else privately nearby like maybe the same place Sir Handel and Peter Sam could’ve potentially gone too)
    -Why was Rheneas still in episodes he was meant to be at the works being mended? Do we just pretend Smudger was restored elsewhere and sent on loan in his place before eventually returning back to his original home or something? Idk

    Season 4 will forever remain my favourite Thomas Season, several of my VHS Tapes growing up had many episodes from S4 on them. I do agree though, from a timeline perspective, it is a little bit of a mess. What I think would've been cool is to mix the episodes up a bit, so that we don't have all the Narrow Gauge episodes in one batch and the Standard Gauge episodes in another batch.

  • @danishmorgan22
    @danishmorgan22 9 днів тому +1

    One of my major problems with Season 4 is that Rheneas appears in episodes that takes place before Gallant Old Engine when he's supposed to be away at the Works. They really messed up the continuity in the TV series, the Duke saga also takes place before all the other Skarloey stories. Its also a shame they never adapted Little Old Twins or the stories from Very Old Engines, even though I can see it would've been difficult at the time to build working cabless models of Skarloey and Rheneas, plus all of the 1800 settings required. The Culdee Stories would probably also have been too difficult to built at the time, but I'm amazed at how much merchandise they got.
    But still this is probably my favorite season, and the first one I saw of the entire show with Granpuff being my first introduction to the Thomas universe! My fave episodes are, hands down, all of the Skarloey ones. Toad Stands By is also very awesome, Toad is a very underused character! Oliver's theme is so majestic, Mike and Junior's themes are so awesome, the show wouldn't have been the same without them

    This video is a refreshing take! Here's my opinion: Pointing out flaws of individual episodes does not (necessarily) call the season as a whole into question. The season begins by transitioning the viewer from standard gauge to narrow, then it does the reverse later in the season. The season contains episodes without standard gauge engines, and it contains episodes without narrow gauge engines, and both of those things are fine. Every season has elements of anthology in it, and to me, that is not an inherent flaw. The bias towards a streamlined story with each episode building off of the previous is fine, but it doesn't invalidate the alternative. Special attraction is downright horrendous. On the whole, season 4's consistency isn't bad so much as it is different. Love the channel!

  • @matthewlemire

    Hey, @Thomasfan261!
    Great video! You make a very good point about how disjointed the two halves of Season 4 are to each other. While a great season (and personally, one of my favorites alongside Season 2), this does ruin the narrative role of the Skarloey characters introduced at the beginning. Unfortunately, Britt, David, and the crew ran out of stories to adapt, and what made it more complicated was (and you may already know this) that they had already adapted stories from the same books in previous seasons, simply because of technological limitations with the models. Obviously, the crew learned as they went along. It would be cool to a fan version of the series on Trainz where the stories are adapted in chronological order from the books they came from, and also introduce other characters not seen on television, such as the Culdee Fell engines. Keep up the great work, as always!!

  • @merlinandmurdoch7837
    @merlinandmurdoch7837 9 днів тому +1

    That’s something I noticed recently, I really agree. One problem people never bring up is the episode order. Some episodes are just randomly misplaced, like Bowled Out is BEFORE Train Stops Play (Stpeny’s finale, and then another Stepney story???). It’s even worse in the US airing, where they had Rusty to the Rescue be the premiere (The episode that is meant to transition from the new characters to the familiar ones, is the first to air.) Also annoying that Paint Pots and Queens is not the finale episode, makes better than dumb old Mind that Bike (Note: They removed Thomas’ line “Can Gordon pull coaches again?” To a Season Three episode, literally half bakes the “United we stand, together we fall” alliance, if only one character fends for the other, unlike the book version where they both stand up for each other.)
    Imagine someone watching Thomas with zero knowledge, I think they would be more confused than a fan could anticipate, not to say they wouldn’t enjoy it, but maybe they would have more problems as someone with no understanding of why some things are the way they are.
    I’ve also a problem with Thomas’ pacing, but that’s another discussion and this is already a text wall.

    Season 4 is my 3rd favorite T&F season (behind S3 at 2nd and S5 at 1st). It’s not as epic or noir as S5 or rambunctious as S3 but S4 has such a pleasant return to form with the Skarloey Railway and the standard gauge episodes (especially Fish) are still really good.

  • @Kukaak
    @Kukaak 7 днів тому

    For me the biggest issue is the sloppy continuity. The Duke saga aired first but some of the engines started with "back when Sir Handel and Peter Sam were called Falcon and Stuart" even though they hadn't been renamed yet, and then the Skarloey Railway is introduced super weirdly because first it's introduced with the two already being on the railway and then in the next episode they arrive for the first time, it's really weird. Another thing is how the Duke flashback episodes seemingly take place before Trucks, which makes Duke's reunion with Stuart and Falcon hit less hard because they were only apart for a while. And Rheneas is seen several times before his return.

    First have a season four, great! Last half of season four, wat? Special letter and paint pots and queens are great. 👍🏻 but I (as most people) agree of what you said in the episode. I feel like the one way they could have ended off is with Christopher Audrey‘s triple header. That way we can see more of the good side and Gordon and sympathy while seeing the three tank engines have one triumphed underdog story. Sure it might not be a “every character in the series ending off of one story” but it could work. Just an idea, though. 🧐 many fans have adapted tripleheader and they have done an excellent job. 2:35 Can we adress the very wonky connections between the S4 episodes? Duke is said to be in the shed for years. Granpuff (gets buried) -> Sleeping Beauty (gets found, Stuart has old stable funnel in the reunion, must take place before atleast Trucks) -> Four Little Engines (Introduction to the Skarloey Railway) -> Bad Day for Sir Handel (Falcon and Stuart's arrival after Granpuff is shown???) -> Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady -> Trucks? Not only should Four Little Engines be after Refreshment Lady, but the passage of time between Duke getting buried, Stuart and Falcon arriving on the railway and the former's funnel being damaged is at most 2-3 months. Not to mention Rheneas just randomly appearing on the railway in episodes like Special Funnel and Steam Roller despite there being no way for Rheneas to be there like wtf is going on with the continuity. That's what happens when you adapt 15 stories sourced from 3 different books that take place years apart and act like they took place in one year :/

    You say it's a flaw but I love Season 4 because of this. This season was really meant to focus on the overarching story of the Narrow Gauge engines, but I love that they gave some attention to the standard gauge engines at the end in an episodic format like Season 3 (which I also love).
    The reason they feel like a random hotchpot of episodes is because they literally are. It's remaining episodes that still needed to be adapted from the Railway Series and followed on to the arcs of the previous seasons (Such as Down the Mine -> Paint Pots and Queens; Oliver Owns Up -> Toad Stands By; Daisy -> Bulls Eyes; etc.) But you probably already know that.

  • @thetttefanwithlegos2992
    @thetttefanwithlegos2992 9 днів тому

    I don’t think it’s quite the fault of the producers for Season 4’s second half, I believe this is due to the limitations they had back then. They had to stick with the contract of adapting RWS books only because of Awdry’s outrage on Season 3’s original stories, and they can’t afford to make new characters props (ie the Culdee Fell characters) due to budget and tech limitations. So Britt and David have no other choice but to use the leftover stories that were skipped over, we can’t really blame them for that.
    Other than second half of Season 4, I do notice some minuscule issues in the Narrow Gauge episode saga, such as little continuity errors like Rheneas appearing a few times when he’s supposed to be away being repaired, and weird geography issues like how the MSR engines appear on certain locations that meant to be part of the Skarloey Railway.

    Ok… not to judged Series 4 of Thomas, it’s a good bedtime series which I love watching. But to be honestly, I see your complaints. I feel like they need to add more episodes to make it a few series. And I pretty sure they need wrapped every story they have from Railway Series to new story. So I am surprised why they did it anyway. Although… I think Rusty to the Rescue end off the narrow gauge engine to the standard gauge engine with Stepney. Only to be more focused on him. The RWS ending to Henry and the Elephant is admitedly funnier, with the narrator being disappointed they DIDN'T tease him, though of course that was leading up to Tenders and Turntables. I can understand why it wasn't in Season One since they had to fit in so many stories as it was, but with that gone that ending likely feels a bit off, James and Gordon are nice to him for personal reasons there.

    The RWS ending of Henry and the Elephant is more the ending of a chapter than the ending of a story. Troublesome Engines is essentially one story in four chapters. I personally argue it was the third book to do this after Thomas the Tank Engine and James the Red Engine, whereas The Three Railway Engines and Tank Engine Thomas Again contain four self-contained stories.

    Season Four is kind of the Percy Takes The Plunge anomoly in Season Two taken up to eleven. Like I appreciate they done Paint Pots and Queens in some form as it was probably the one entry Season One severely missed, but then they add Duck and Donald and Douglas into scenes for no reason. We also get stories awkwardly tucked together like Skarloey Remembers mixed with Old Faithful, a decent idea on paper, but since it comes before Bad Day For Sir Handel it has the coaches being assholes for no reason.
    They also start to deviate more from the original dialogue a lot more, some are only nominally more accurate than some of Season Three's worst. I do like SOME takes like Thomas and Stepney but in others like Bad Day For Sir Handel it feels like they pad too much of the story with fluff that could be used to give a fuller telling of the original.

    Honestly, I think I share this opinion where the continuity and flow in S4 is probably the sloppiest of the first 7 seasons, especially if you watch in the official episode order. If you just rearrange it where say Mind That Bike is the season opener and it ends on Sleeping Beauty, and mix the standard gauge and narrow gauge episodes a bit the flow wouldn’t feel so jarring.

    Even though Season 4 is my favorite season because of the spectacular model work, the first half episodes be focused on The Narrow Gauge Characters and also having 4 episodes be about Stepney and incredible music. The second half was pretty much a hodgepodge of stories that some weren’t adapted from the previous three seasons. But hey, there’s at least some good ones like Thomas & The Special Letter and Paint Pots & Queen

    I used to find the leftover episodes kinda jarring in this season due to them coming out of nowhere and feeling tacked on for the sake of completing their respective books, but nowadays I think these episodes not being adapted sooner is more so an issue on the previous seasons parts. I suppose them being adapted now is better than never being adapted at all, especially considering they would stop adapting the books for over 20 years afterwards.
    In my opinion they should have spread out some of the standard gauge episodes between the narrow gauge sagas so that it doesn’t feel like we’re spending too long on the Skarloey Railway (like what Zack Wanzer suggested in his review), adapt Skarloey Remembers with Sir Handel for a Bad Day for Sir Handel and then have Old Faithful be its own episode. And also that one would be placed at the end of the Four Little Engines saga instead of the start. Seriously, who thought it would be a good idea to put the episode that introduces Sir Handel and Peter Sam after the episode where Skarloey has to do their work. And also Mind That Bike could be swapped with any other episode as the season finale. Even to this day I’m still surprised that it’s the last episode of this season.

    Season 4 is my favorite season B w/ S5 being A! I have no problem w/ the second half, though Mind That Bike is not just a weird finale, but also w/ a few elements from its original plot in the RWS that excludes a few tidbits that wouldn't feel elusive w/ models due to limited stuff to digital stuff at the time. If you want a cohesive order of the episodes, then you can check the Japanese airings, though there are a few eps that I think could work well in a certain order. So here's my interpretation:
    1. Granpuff
    2. Sleeping Beauty
    3. Henry & the Elephant
    4. Toad Stands By
    5. A Bad Day for Sir Handel
    6. Peter Sam & the Refreshment Lady
    7. Four Little Engines
    8. Bulls Eyes
    9. Mind That Bike
    10. Bulldog
    11. You Can't Win
    12. Trucks!
    13. Home at Last
    14. Rock 'N' Roll
    15. Special Funnel
    16. Steam Roller
    17. Rusty to the Rescue
    18. Thomas & Stepney
    19. Train Stops Play
    20. Bowled Out
    21. Fish
    22. Thomas & the Special Letter (the 100th episode)
    23. Special Attraction
    24. Passengers & Polish
    25. Gallant Old Engine
    26. Paint Pots & Queens (the season finale)
    May not be perfect, but I hope it'll suffice.

    I love Season 4 to bits but I have to admit it is very flawed in some aspects. A lot of people like to talk about the 2nd half of the season being a mixed bag but one thing that I'm surprised no one has touched upon is the weird flow of the first few episodes of the season, let me explain.
    The Duke stories are a fantastic opening to the season but the issue with them being the first episodes is that while the stories Thomas tells take place before everything else in the season, Thomas telling the stories take place after the first few Skarloey episodes(we do see Duke in Special Funnel so it's implied that all the Skarloey episodes before that take place before he was found and restored and thus Thomas telling the stories of Duke to the other engine take place after). This in the grand scheme of things doesn't really matter too much especially since they didn't do anything with Duke after the 4 first episodes of the season but it's something that's always bothered me after seeing how everything was set up and framed as they originally were in the RWS and part of me wishes that was how they did it in the TVS just to make everything feel a bit smoother.
    Moving on to Four Little Engines and a Bad Day for Sir Handel though here's where the other issue pops up. Because Skarloey Remembers was axed in the adaptation the introduction to the Skarloey Railway by Edward had to be tacked on to another episode. This in of itself wouldn't have been an issue but they tacked it on to the last story that chronologically takes place in the original book and have it come after the other 2 stories that were adapted. Again, this in it of itself would have been fine and the appropriate changes been made but they weren't.
    So the end result is Sir Handel and Peter Sam arriving on the railway and the proper introduction to the Skarloey Railway as a whole takes place an entire episode after one where we've already seen the railway and Sir Handel and Peter Sam have already arrived and are working on it.
    Another smaller issue caused by this is that without the context of the stories being somewhat out of order it's implied that Skarloey had to wait in the sheds for a while after being told he was going to be mended before actually being sent off to be mended and him leaving to be mended is never shown, or acknowledged at all until he returns.
    What really should have happened in my opinion at least is that an original story should have been written in place of Skarloey Remembers for an introduction to the railway. Have it about Skarloey and Rheneas struggling to run the railway and at the end, the manager promises to bring in 2 more engines to help and Rheneas is sent off to be mended. Keep the rest of the stories adapted from the book largely unchanged and the rest of the season plays out as it did axing one of the later episodes like maybe Mind That Bike to make room for the additional Narrow Gauge-centric episode.
    This is just me really overthinking things though and while after noticing them it's something that's always gonna bug me about Season 4 it doesn't diminish my love for the season. Ironically though, I think if these issues were present in any other season I don't think I would mind too much but because the first half of season 4 is meant to be such a cohesive and straightforward set of stories having these issues really sticks out like a sore thumb for me.

    I think it’s strange to have the show use all of the standard gauge characters for the first three seasons and then those characters barely appear for the first half of Season 4 and then become relevant again in the second half. I like the Narrow Gauge Engines and their episodes but I think they shouldn’t have had all their episodes happen back to back. But the episodes themselves are still great though!

    I do not know about you at all. The only flaw I see in Season 4 is the off putting episode order with "A Bad Day for Sir Handel" being placed after "Four Little Engines" when it should be placed before both that and "Peter Sam and the Refreshment Lady". Not that this affects the quality of the episode, but I couldn't help but think that Britt and David screwed up on their part. The same thing happened with "Bowled Out" when it's supposed to be placed after "Train Stops Play".

    5:46, reason they did adapted Bulls Eyes in S4 was because Shining Time Station co-creator Rick Siggelkow didn’t like Daisy’s character design being depicted as sexist most likely due to the heavy make-up she wears, and hence why none of her episodes in S2 aired on Shining Time. I’m gonna guess that since Rick wasn’t involved in the STS spin-off, Mr. Conductor’s Thomas Tales, they adapted Bulls Eyes, so they could air a Daisy episode on a related STS media.

    like most I love season 4, but i hate it in terms of writing, it screws over wilbert’s settle world building he had worked like 15 years on to introduce duke, and it’s just now the first episode of this season, also the transition between the mid sodor to the skarloey was always clunky for me. four little engines introduction sucked and a bad day for sir handle follows that to. Wish they just followed the order in the books.
    However, I have a possible theory why this season is the way that it is and it’s probably because of Wilbert. it’s is made clear that man had some problems with season 3, I do recall seeing articles online that he did not enjoy it. I could also mention the documentary, but that was made during the production of season 4. Anyhow with so much bad press. Britt probably was hand tied and had to keep wilbert happy so there wouldn’t be anymore bad press. which as to adapt only rws stories and no originals this season.
    I hope this makes sense.

It’s a British show, it needs that charm. Not American accents voicing a load of British trains on a British railway on a British island in Britain. It’s even worse in the cgi series, the voices for the characters in America are awful
