It’s funny & ridiculous how the test audience found a human more scary than a diesel with a giant claw.
I'm the 69th like
Sailor John: allow me to introduce myself 😈
That's hilarious
I think they still think anything in the world is too old and scary.
Kids are so... confusing...
Not many people saw this video when this was originally up, as it was left unlisted due to copyright flags and only accessible from a community post.
So it's great to see this finally be public, especially with just how thorough it was.
Wait, seriously? Huh, guess that explains why I didnt watch it before.
Yeah I almost missed it too. at first I thought why did he took so long for the next video after he posted that this video has copyright issue until I checked the community again and at first I thought why did he posted this twice? Then I read the posts again to made me realized that the second one has the link of this video.
I think a few thousand people saw it originally
Oh, that’s why I didn’t recognize this video!
That explains A Lot
I really love the fact that Diesel 10's goal in the original script drafts was just to bully the engines and he doesn't discover the magic buffers until later because the fact that his goal shifts from "i want to bully all the steam engines and make them all crash so the diesels can take over" to "IM GOING TO KILL GOD" is infinitely funny to me
“I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT!” he says planning his homicidal rampage
I wish they left that in
It’s kinda like that in the final too. He bullies the trains and keeps spouting that diesels are better and says he wants to find the lost engine. Then when he finds out about the buffers, he wants to destroy the entire universe lol
I honestly feel bad for John Bellis. Imagine thinking that you're going to get your big break in the show business but then you find out people didn't like your voice in the movie.
Eh, at least he wasn't completely forgotten
@@armorpro573 yeah
i wonder if he's relieved not being in the movie after seeing how it turned out.
@@aessseomi maybe he is
If they're complaints were that his Thomas voice was a bit old, I'm willing to bet that working Edward into the story wouldn't have been too hard of a solution.
We know where Edward is! He took one look at the script and said, NOPE! He went on Strike. Duck, Oliver and the Scottish Twins joined him!
They all knew the movie was going to be terrible.
I do wonder who they'd've got to voice them all had they been in the movie...Paul Haddad, Rob Tinkler, Lyon Smith and Scott McCord, perhaps?!
The fact diesel himself agreed, said something
@@ciarandaragh8676 Diesel actually wanted to be in the movie, however he and Diesel 10 kept getting confused as one another. So he left.
@@ToyFreddyGaming1987 Devious Diesel is a BR Class 8 while Diesel 10 is an Archer class with the Claw known as Pinchy
Ngl hearing all about the behind the scenes stuff and interviews from people who worked on this movie talk so positively about this movie is honestly really sweet. While the movie isn't perfect hearing how much people enjoyed being apart of the movie makes it feel like it was one big passion project which I honestly kind of admire.
Hearing how Peter Fonda enjoyed being in this movie and how it brought out his "Inner Child" surprised me, considering how utterly depressed Burnett looked in both cuts of the movie.
I basically look at this as really high quality fan fiction, like ee93 or Carson video productions

1:14:59 Still hilarious to me that they were actually gonna have Thomas hit on Lady. A lot of people ship them to begin with, but just imagine how much more intense it would’ve been if they’d left that line in.

but, Choo Choo Trains, seriously?
Imagine scoring the role of the main villain in a movie; your biggest role yet only to find out that you've been cut completely
All because test audiences thought it was too scary for a kids movie
Seriously we’re the test audience all people with high levels of fear? Like a phobia of intimidating voices? Like come on a lot of good stuff was removed.
If I was in the test audience I would’ve complained he wasn’t scary enough
PT Boomer is just an utterly pointless character and all he does is make the movie more of a mess. His goal is litterly the same as diesel 10 to find and destroy lady granted there for different reasons of course but its the same idea so why have him. Had Pt been a part of the movie it would have rendered diesel 10 a worthless villian and none of the trains would have been necessary to the plot. Cutting him out of the movie and making Diesel 10 the main villian was a wise choice as at last it provides a link between the human plot and the engines plot. he was completely irrelevant. He appears for 6minutes at most and does nothing beyond blowing up Muffle Mountain.
Keith Scott's biggest role was actually in Rocky and Bullwinkle. (The film, not the series)
The fact that the tumbleweed can talk leads me to believe that the rubber ball and bat that Mr. C talks to before bed really do have sentience and we wasn't just messing around.
Those scenes should've been removed. I see a lot of fans saying that P.T. Boomer is a useless character. I respectfully disagree with that statement. The REAL useless character was Mr. Conductor. Think about it, all he ever did was talk to the audience, talk to a ball and bat and go on a wild goose chase in the woods losing his mind! Alec Baldwin should've only just been the narrator in the movie and NOT a character! Also, it wasn't necessary for Shining Time Station to clash with the Thomas universe, I know Britt Allcroft just wanted to do something creative for a Thomas movie, but this is not the way to do it. I think the subplot with Lily and Burnett would have worked if it didn't involve magic, talking tumbleweeds, sentient rabbits, Mr. Conductor, Stacy Jones, Billy Twofeathers or the entirety of Shining Time Station! I think a story involving the bond of a girl and her grandfather should have been more compelling, especially when the grandpa was grieving the loss of his wife and needed to go through some emotional baggage. And Lady doesn't have to be a magical engine, she could just be an old engine that needs to be restored and with a real-life basis. Sodor should be more real and British with real life humans instead of wooden figures and the engines should NOT drive themselves. The Thomas Characters from seasons 1-5 should've appeared and cameoed. Sir Topham Hatt should have more involvement in the film instead of being the Phone Guy (FNAF reference LOL), the same goes to Thomas, he's in the title and should have more screen time along with his friends. Lily should be a well written character and have more of a personality instead of asking a dog which train to take which is ridiculous, same goes to Burnett. I think Patch is a decent supporting character, so he's fine. And Boomer should've been more of a better written and compelling character to be THE FIRST human villain in Thomas & Friends universe, the first human to ever wanted to scrap an engine, and most importantly the one who owns and operates Diesel 10. Speaking of Diesel 10, I hate the final cut version of him, it had more to do with magic and Mr. Conductor instead of saying to scrap all the steam engines so diesels can take over. And what's with his voice in the final cut? It's too cartoony and too American for a British built diesel. The original cut with Keith Scott voicing him sounds way better and British. And I also hate the final cut because of Percy and James' voices, they sound too girly! They're guys! What the hell?! And I also hate the trend of Gordon being mean in the movie and the rest of the series! He and Thomas formed an alliance together, "United we stand, together we fall. You help me, and I help you." DOES THAT RING A BELL?! And Henry should NOT use special coal anymore! And the chase that led to the big viaduct seems dangerous in my opinion, it should've led to a smaller bridge that's breaking and needs repairs. I enjoy Junior as a comic relief more than the next guy, but getting himself fling by a windmill is dangerous.

In my AU, Lady is officially introduced into the NWR fleet afterwards as the Number 8 Engine, and Duck just keeps his Swindon number due to Topham's apprenticeship base. Duck's like a Number 8.5 that way.

I know this is a bad movie, but It will always have a spot in my heart simply because my dad worked on it. Funny story though, my dad worked on it as a Construction laborer, and at the end of production they brought the laborer's together and told them that some strings had been pulled and they could have their names moved to the Carpenters section of the end credits. My dad was the only one to not take them up one the deal, so now when you get to the Toronto section of the credits, the Carpenters section is this huge block of names, and my dad has Construction laborer's, the entire section of the credits, all to himself!

On another note, i feel Eddie Glenn is *THE* pinnacle voice actor for Thomas.
I can't explain why, but the voice he gave Thomas just sounds so...perfect...for the character...
I also LOVE Susy Roman's portrayal of James.
Idkw, but it just sounds so much like my mental picture of James's voice😅
Not me. It doesn't work for James at all. Honestly, Susan Roman would be perfect for daisy.
@@thomaspresson9070Daisy is just James, but a woman.
I still think, they should've kept Michael Angelis as the voice of James. Maybe test audiences would have liked Angelis, had he done the energetic tone like in Season 5 and also do the James' voice in the TV show. It would have linked up to the TV show's UK dubs in what was an americanized movie. Not to mention most UK viewers thinking that the movie is having Thomas allegedly "americanized."
That's what they should've done.
I've never seen an "annotated movie summary" like this before. And I'd love to see more somewhere, someday. It's really interesting how much time and effort goes into making a movie, and how much can get left out from the final version. You did a great job with compiling all this research.
I think Steamed Hams started it lol
Sometimes I wonder why Mr conductor is short at shinning time and big on sodor is he magical?
33:55: I think the reason why no other engine characters are present was the fact that it wasn't filmed at Shepperton Studios, but rather in Canada. Most of the models probably stayed in Britain, and those that were shipped over to Canada were likely damaged or lost.
O for Budget?
Something that caught my attention is how they exclude human figures (apart from Bertie because it appears that he came included with the model) which could have been facilitated if they had used real humans on Sodor to make it feel like a more alive railway.
Something curious is that most of Sodor's non humans characters that appear in the film are from Series 1 with the exception of Edward and Terence, the others did not have much except for Harold from series 2 (the troublesome trucks with his face that debuted) , no characters from series 3 and 4 (not counting the planned appearance of George), and only a few from series 5 that are background cameos for Butch and Cranky (even if he had a role planned for the latter).
thomas's cgi apperance in the movie is so much nicer looking than the one used in series 13-16

Great video! I do think its worth mentioning, however, that at 52:10 Henry doesn't need his special Welsh coal. The coal is special 'Sodor' coal, separate to Henry's coal. It is this coal that Lady needs to run, but given that it is exclusive to Sodor Burnett Stone obviously can't get it. This scene is used to set that up.
Henry is probably used for two reasons; first is his past with coal. It is what causes this problem, but why not use the engine most related to special coal? Second is that, unlike the other engines, he doesn't have his own scene: Gordon has the intro, James has the smelters, Percy the magic buffers and Toby the scrapyard, but Henry shares all his other scenes with at least two engines.
And poor old Edward got none
I'm actually hoping that Mattel will allow Mark Forrester to go all out with his movie of Thomas much like when he did the live-action movie Christopher Robin which took the story of Winnie the Pooh in a realistic setting I can see him doing that with his version of Thomas being very much like what the Reverend W Awdry would have wanted
Imagine if in 2025 - 25 years after the original and to celebrate The Railway Series’s 80th anniversary, we get a remade version of the movie, but more like the version with PT Boomer (and having Edward in some capacity). Wouldn’t that be nice? Also like how “Mewtwo Strikes Back” was remade.

I think I can speck for everyone when I say that whether you love or hate Magic Railroad, you’ve gotta respect all the hard work that the team put into making it. As Tug just showed us.
yeah
This movie might not be good, but it’s great to see that everyone enjoyed being a part of it, even the adults.
I actually like the fact the muffle mountain and Shining Time shots were filmed on the Isle of Man. As it is the closest island to Sodor besides the mainland, it's a nice reference to where Sodor is located
Neil Crone does such a good job in this film and plays the bumbling villain so well. I loved him on Little Mosque on the Prairie too. I actually grew up in the next town over from where he lives where he is a columnist for our local newspaper.
As someone who's read the scripts and archival interviews, us fans are more than happy to help you with missing parts that were not mentioned in the video:
1. In the May 1999 script, Mr. Conductor and Junior would've remained their 18 inch tall size on Sodor as well aside from Shining Time Station. Notable scenes include the phone being bigger than Mr. C., him escaping Pinchy before landing onto a bush bouncing him all the way to the windmill and Junior ducking himself when Diesel 10 tries to use Pinchy to throw him off.
2. Also in the same May script, the British and American terminologies were originally gonna be made fun of throughout the movie with the engines referring to Sir Topham Hatt as 'The Fat Controller' and correcting Mr. Conductor when he accidentally said Sodor 'Railroad' instead of 'Railway'. This was omitted in later drafts most likely due to political correctness, especially since Dr. Ron Slaby was the child psychologist consultant on both this movie and Shining Time Station. Additionally, since Junior was originally meant to be British, there would've been a moment during the windmill scene when Mr. C. calls him an unreliable English puppy. The Fat Controller would've exploded with anger over the bellflower and Mr. Conductor realizes what he just said and replies 'Yes Sir, all Englishmen are wonderful."
3. Speaking of the Fat Controller, he was originally gonna be casted as a live-action appearance in the movie, but this was dropped due to them not finding the right actor for the job. In the end, the scenes of him mumbling over the phone was provided by Kevin Frank (albeit uncredited). According to an archival newspaper promoting the film, they had thought to consider Danny Devito for the role.
4. The sneezing powder scene was originally meant to take place at the quarry and not Tidmouth Sheds. This originally scene idea did make its way into the book adaptation 'Little Engines Can Do Big Things'.
5. The speculation of Edward taking the Hatt family to their holiday was actually written into Rainbow Sun Productions' Off-Broadway Presentation for a limited run in 2020 during the film's 20th anniversary and would've explained why Diesel 10 has arrived to help out the other engines.
6. The scene of Henry needing special coal being retconned was not present in the May 1999 script originally, for it was just regular coal and that he said he needed a 'change in coal'. It was only then in later drafts including the revised August script and workprints that the special coal thing was brought in, except it's Special 'Sodor' coal and not 'Welsh' coal.
7. The clue to the source of the gold dust was actually meant to be shown on a sheet of paper that Mr. Conductor had to climb up the waterfall to retrieve it. This was later changed to a rockface on Rainbow Ridge in the revised August version before changing it to the side of the windmill. Additionally, after D10 dumps ash into Thomas' funnel, there would've been a scene where Thomas' whistle is broken and startles Mr. Conductor before falling off the waterfall/landing on the wagon and tumbling down the ridge.
8. Patch meeting Lily is actually meant to take place at her Grandpa's house after Burnett goes back inside and comes back out again to greet Patch. That can be found (you guessed it) in the May 1999 script.
9. In the May script, Thomas didn't stop for the coal truck and only Patch and his horse went down the Magic Railroad to retrieve it.
10. While we have absolutely no idea who played an older Lily in the workprint (unless someone could actually ask Britt Allcroft who that actress was. She did not play her as she did the temp voiceover), an older Patch was played by Canadian actor Rob Tinkler (the voice of Delete from Cyberchase to which Percy's VA Linda Ballantyne worked on as Wicked).
And finally, there is an official recording of Diesel 10's Russian accent as he showcased it in an interview of YOUCH Films Podcast in 2017 in the section where he talked about his work on Magic Railroad. He even mentioned about Doug Lennox wearing a production crew jacket with Thomas and Lady on the back. The jacket is now preserved by Twitter user Zackary Ampuero.
@@unrealcreator3356that would've been crazy! If Nostalgia Critic didn't understand Peter Fonda or Alec Baldwin he would've blown a blood vessel with Danny Devito
For 3. like Tug said in his Magic Railroad review, they could've gotten Alec Baldwin to play Sir Topham Hatt.
Danny DeVito playing Sir Topham Hatt is too perfect, I would’ve loved for that to happen. He could’ve reteamed with his Matilda costar Mara Wilson
Quick correction, Rob Tinkler played Delete, not Digit. Digit was played by Gilbert Gottfried
@@pokemaster123ism Just reedited my comment now after noticing that mistake. Thanks.
The songs “I know how the moon must feel” and “Shining Time” are amazing songs.
It comes off like the later showrunners found the original print and decided they liked Keith Scott's Diesel 10 more. The CGI version sounds a LOT like his.
It's worth noting that originally Splatter and Dodge were going to be voiced by American actor and comedian Patrick Breen who was actually the narrator of Britt Allcroft's other series The Adventures of Mumfie
Do you know which countries _The Adventures of Mumfie_ got realised in? Because I don't think I've ever seen it here in Sweden.
@@antonberglund117 it was a British American animated series
I genuinely love the passion brit clearly has for the series. Like, I well and truely believe she wrote this movie as basically her fanfiction, and i mean that in the coolest way possible.
I think it's safe to say the surviving workprint was from *after* the initial test screening, and was probably one of many continual re-edits down until they arrived at the final cut of the film. You can especially tell by the voice acting where the re-writes were: all the professional voice work adheres fairly close to the shooting scrips, while the temp VO strongly deviated and is closer to the final re-writes. It's odd how they seem to have already settled on Diesel 10's final role in the film so early on in re-editing, making Boomer completely redundant to the Sodor-side plot.
12:45 reminds me of a certain Beetle who narrated Thomas in Season 1... hmm wonder if that was an intentional nod or not.
17:20 I'm sure everyone knows this but if you don't the "real life replica" of Thomas was built off H.K Porter built Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal 15, there's a lot more history behind this though but if I explained we'd be here all day.
17:28 This was shot near a location called "Groff's Grove" a station stop for Strasburg trains and where excursions normally meet on weekends when 2 sets are run, not 1. 475 was chosen cause the film producer Phil Fehrle asked Strasburg's then Chief mechanical officer Linn Moedinger he was looking for an American engine for use for the "Rainbow Sun" Fehrle told him that director, Britt Allcroft liked the locomotives pictured in a book by O. Winston Link (a photographer and dedicated railfan who documented the last days of steam on the N&W in the late 50s and 1960), in particular the M-Class 4-8-0s which of course 475 is a member of said class. 475 and 3 coaches of Strasburg's were relettered to the fictional "Indian Valley" but only 2 coaches were used, I'm not 100% sure which coaches in particular recived this relettering.
38:16 This was historically significant as this was the last time a steam locomotive ran through Harrisburg Station likely since either the end of steam on the PRR in 1957 or when PRR 7002 and 1223 (both owned by the RR museum of PA) ran through on a doubleheader excursion in the mid 1980s. The ferry move though was hush hush (see what I did there) to avoid crowds and probably thousands of railfans flocking like moths on a light XD If you look in the shot of Mutt running in the station after putting Lily on the wrong train you can see an Amtrak train with amfleet coaches in the background, this was probably a Pennsylvanian going to Pittsburgh or New York, there's a BTS photo of an Amtrak Genesis series diesel passing 475 in Harrisburg but I can't seem to find it anymore, either way the short consist is a red flag it was just a Pennsylvanian.
1:05:43 I see James's whistle has magically dissapeared for the sake of Junior's balls XD
1:17:15 This is why I love watching the whole end credits, little gags like this are often missed unless you willingly stick around XD
Fun Fact: Susan Roman, the voice of James in the movie was also the original English voice of Sailor Jupiter in Sailor Moon and Percy's voice, Linda Ballentyne, also voiced Sailor Moon herself in the third and fourth seasons of the original 90's dub (following Tracey Moore, the first dub voice in the first 11 episodes, plus episodes 15 and 21, and Terri Hawkes, the second voice for the rest of season 1, season 2, and the original dubs for the three movies). Speaking of which, Thomas's voice actor, Eddie Glen has done some anime voice over work as well with roles such as Ryoma in Power Stone (1999 series), Shigeo Shiba in Patlabor (mostly in the original MangaUK English dub of the first two movies), and Jean-Paul Barthez in Beyblade: G Revolution.
Such cool fun facts!
31:40 Mara Wilson also said that James was actually her favourite character in an interview
Just when you thought you knew what happened during the film's production, more nuggets begin to pop up.
23:15 Knowing that Lady was originally going to have Emily's engine design makes it very strange to think we almost wouldn't been introduced to her before the real Emily in 2003.
Close, but Emily is based off of the GNR Stirling Single and the Dean Singles worked on the GWR where Duck, Oliver, Isabel, Dulcie, Alice, Mirabel, The Slip Coaches & Toad also used to work.
Hearing what John Bellis would have sounded like as Thomas makes me wish he was the final voice for the film as I really did like that liverpudlian accent he did
Its nice seeing this video back and un-private as well, no trouble with copyright this time.
Somewhere in an alternate universe, there was a Thomas and Friends movie that was a cinematic experience for old fans and new fans. Not only that, but we would have had the cast of Shining Time Station and Tugs there as well.
I can imagine a scene of Tophat & Gordon/James just conversing and ultimately becoming friends in a manner.
It seems that Mara Wilson didn’t retire forever, because she voiced a character in the animated series Helluva Boss
Yeah she also voiced a character in Big Hero 6 the animated series. I guess maybe she does sporadic voice acting?
Well like he said, she was going through her own issues at the time after Magic Railroad, so we can assume Mara retiring allowed her to deal with those issues. Then she became a writer, and then went to do some voice acting in other things.
i did some research on it Mara Wilson did return to acting back in 2012 12 years after she first retired
I wish the finalised original version that was shown at the test screening would somehow get leaked online. Imagine if MagicRailRoadNerd got their hands on that and polished it up, we could get something at a nearly official level of quality with the original voices intact!

Call me a sadist, but I would really like to see a version of this movie that reincorporates a lot of the deleted/work print scenes.
I love this movie, shame it was cut down. It could've been a great film, with P.T. Boomer and all those extra scenes and stuff. It'd also raise lots of questions, as well. this movie holds a special place in my heart, and I'll always love it.
Interesting you didn't mention that the tugs from TUGS were supposedly supposed to make a cameo but Britt didn't like that idea.
TUGS was a bit of a sore spot for her, from what I heard. She did not like that this other thing was made behind her back as it were
I don't think it would have been any better, even with all that...
Douglas was also to be part of the main cast as in the Brazilian dub but was cut probably due to too many main characters being on screen
My lord, I was 5 when I first saw this movie. I still have the original VHS. I still think about the city scene talking about how 'Magic is all around us.' When the card headlights reflect in the rain. Yes its not the best movie but man, for 5 year old me, it truly was magical. And still is to this day
I’m with you, the whole VHS tape from the opening previews all through the movie to the end credits, it’s every bit nostalgic to me as my favorite Disney VHS tapes as well as the Thomas videos and DVDs. The DVD of this movie doesn’t have that same kind of nostalgia, when I pop the VHS in, and watch the Trumpet of the Swan preview and all the trailers afterward, I’m immediately taken back to when I first watched this VHS at my grandma and grandpa’s and how they let me keep it, but I would bring it with me to watch at their house as well. And the Thomas books commercial before the film starts is something I used to rewind repeatedly, hearing the classic Thomas theme while showing clips from the movie. I really wish the DVD had the same opening previews. Glad our VCR players still work 😂. And I do really like how the movie goes by very fast for me. And I do think the final version is better than the workprint, even though there are scenes with Burnett in the work print that I really enjoy, but the movie itself is a lot more joyful and less dramatic than the work print. And the Really Useful Engine scene as well as the credits are my most rewinded scenes
I really enjoyed this video. Absolutley loved the dedication and research you put into making this informative video, and showing just how turbulent the production for TATMR truly was.
The ending of the movie always gives me a feeling of sadness kinda... because I love the movie and idk the end is just great
Glad to see you were finally able to upload this video that was originally unlisted due to copyright stuff. Definitely enjoy this annotation of the movie.
1:13:57 I can’t blame him, the Chase Scene and Diesel 10 falling is one of the greatest highlights from the movie as a whole.
Maybe it’s just wishful thinking because of what the final product was but I think the original draft sounds so much more interesting, like the character interactions sound fun and having George and Cranky appear would’ve been cool, maybe mix in some elements from the revised drafts to make everything flow well and it could’ve been really good
13:07 another one of these actors was actually Australian voice actor Keith Scott who would have done the voice of Diesel 10 who many Australians would remember as the voice of nearly all the male characters in the Animated Series Blinky Bill
As an Australian myself I think that would have been awesome!
The adult Patch in the final scene cut from the film was played by the very talented Robert Tinkler, who most know as the voice of Max from Sam & Max, the titular character of Pelswick, Crimson Rubeus in the DiC dub of Sailor Moon, Edward Falcon in the Power Stone anime, Hanamichi Sakuragi in the short-lived dub of Slam Dunk, and Delete from Cyberchase.
So that makes 3 people who were affiliated with sailor moon that were brought on to be in a thomas movie.

@@williampulfer-melville8536 which character did he play in that show?
@@AutZentus I think he was just voicing a bunch of background characters no major character in particular
This was my favorite movie when I was a child. But the memories of it is the best to this day
I love it too. But it could’ve been better if they hadn’t cut out or altered anything at all. That’s why I gave it a 7.5/10 stars ⭐️ on my own channel.
Excellent video analysis, my friend; it's a pleasure to finally see this in person! Here's my take of how I think 'Thomas & the Magic Railroad' could work if revised so that the engines of Sodor had a more developed role; in the existing film their role relates principally to the human plot. I've added my ideas as appropriate (Revised 3rd July 2023):
- The film starts on Sodor with a number of engines including ones who did not appear in the film, giving fans a pleasure of seeing their favourite character from the series up on the screen (similar to 'The Care Bears Movie' where each of the Care Bears get their own moment or line of dialogue as a family unit).
- Edward not appearing in the movie might actually have been to do with Britt Allcroft having narrowed down the engines to be shown in the film in relation to colour. Despite his notable character, Edward being another blue engine in-between Thomas and Gordon offset what Allcroft had in mind with direct contrast. At any rate, Edward for the right reasons would be involved in my take. As suggested in the video, he is tasked to escort Sir Topham Hatt and his Wife on his annual excursion. Thomas and Gordon's discussion at the Big Station is offset by this instead of the abrupt introduction of Diesel 10, which instead comes later. The repairs plot point and Mr. Conductor coming to Sodor is brought up between them, which also makes Edward reminisce an engine he knew that helped build Sodor's Railway, also known as No. 1, who broke down trying to take a train on her own during the construction work and was left in a siding. When the time came to reclaim the engine, they found it had vanished without clear trace. Edward leaves Thomas with much to think about. This backstory serves to reveal why Thomas arrived on Sodor, motivate him on a personal level and underlie the existence of Lady.
- The main titles then come up, following which we have the scene of Lily preparing to leave the Big City, followed by the introductory scenes of Shining Time and P. T. Boomer. Burnett Stone is not introduced until after the attack on the sheds in order to better twist the mood of the story.
- Mr. Conductor is not picked up by Thomas. He instead arrives on Sodor at Tidmouth Sheds during the midst of the main line engines talking about Mr. Conductor, and who should be responsible for him. Thomas boldly suggests he look after Mr. Conductor as No. 1 engine, which results in Gordon and James belittling him as per the film. James is also grumbling about working at the smelters lately, which supports why we see him there when faced with termination in the block of Diesel 10 later on. Mr. Conductor announces that Thomas, as No. 1 engine, will mind him while he is present, and asks Thomas to take him direct to Knapford.
- Diesel 10 is introduced with his attack on the sheds and some underlying context, revealing he escaped from a test facility (actually mentioned in the Magic Railroad Parody video elsewhere on UA-cam) which explains his ability to travel as he pleases and his claw, which for comical effect is played with the 'Pinchy' moniker because that is just a niche idea. He also finds out about Lady in the same way that he does in the original script rather than the final film, since I felt it more fitting for him to have basically come in on his tyrannical endeavours uninvited and learning about the key to Mr. Conductor's endurance as he goes along.
- The whole coal-truck plot is emphasised as linking back to bad coal most of the Sodor engines have had to be forced to deal with until a better supply arrives. This is established with Mr. C. talking to Sir Topham Hatt in his office. Thomas is ultimately tasked to collect it from the sidings which turn out to be near the magic buffers; this rather than it not being just Henry who was having problems with coal.
- As per the original intention, No. 1/Lady is revealed in the third act and does not speak; that is, until the very end, when, encompassing the culmination of Thomas's own journey to connect with his predecessor, he is the very first being Lady has the strength to talk to, in a manner similar to a child saying their first words.
Regards, Samuel Farris.
Fantastic video! Very well detailed about Thomas and The Magic Railroad and it answered lots of questions that we had forever about this movie. I always really like seeing videos about this movie but this one is my favorite easily. Loved this video!
To be fair, I remembered watching this movie as a kid. And during that time, I didn’t even know this was a theatrical feature. I actually thought at first that it was gonna be one of those direct to video PSA’s about trains while also slapping the Thomas and Friends branding to make it all the more interesting.
Giving thomas the voice of ten cents and percy the voice of sunshine would have been nice.
I don't care what anyone else says about this movie. I loved it, it was part of my childhood, just as Thomas was part of all of our childhoods. And whether you think it was bad or good, at least it's better than the Season 25 reboot. You can't deny that.
When you even mention the Mike Stoklasa juggler joke, you know this is ludicrously in-depth! Nice one!
This video confirms unlucky tug would make a great thomas narrator
"forget it, boomer! you'll never catch us!" the way it aged lol
I hope this doesn't get taken down, i am so glad to have at least seen it.
While I don’t like Thomas & The Tragic Failroad one bit, I think it’s the worst Thomas movie in fact, I do find its troubled development very interesting, and this is a very comprehensive look into it, in a very unique style might I add, another great video from the one and only Unlucky Tug, I’m glad you reuploaded it, as the original was never uploaded publicly and was always unlisted
I agree with every word you said, and I literally just watched this a week ago. The movie, I mean. I did see the original version of this video, along with the original review, so I knew what I was getting myself into, I was just watching for curiosity sake.
I realize some thing, though, if they kept this, just to shineing time, this would’ve worked better
Yooooo hi radish
Wanna vc tomorrow?
You better be asleep rn
I think the voices for this movie were the best. I loved the voices for everyone in the movie
It's amazing how easily and how much some unused media assets can be reused for different contexts and scenes
I didnt know Neil Crone was in all engines go? I haven’t watched that show but that’s a really cool little detail
Yep, they recorded it up north (since Nelvana animated AEG) and that's how we ended up with that role reprisal...
@@dcb99filmz which is really weird because the Canadian Animation Studios nitrogen Studios ark animations and jam film Productions animated the CGI series and the show would have the US dub voiced by American and Canadian actors who resided in England or having the English actors doing American accents
Awesome to see this available to the public after it was originally unlisted!
I really hope your other video on this film (the actual review) will be reuploaded at some point, I actually thought this video was just a reupload of that with a different name and thumbnail before deciding to rewatch it only to find something completely new. Glad I did though, I found it really fascinating. Nice work as always.
Yes! You’re absolutely right about everything! I actually wrote a college paper this year about how the movie and series were made for history of design class. It’s amazing isn’t it?! 😊
1:14:08 apparently at one point one of the crew members insisted on having Ten Cents and Sunshine from tugs make a cameo towing the barge Diesel 10 lands in but in the final cut it was just replaced with a generic tugboat
Since you pointed out PT's figure on D10, you may have not noticed but right before Lady and Thomas leave the human characters, there's a figure of Lily's grandpa in lady's cab. It's hard to see but if you pause it just in time, it's really neat
Fun Fact:
Susan Roman and Linda Ballantyne
- who replaced Michael Angelis as
James & Percy - co-starred together
in the original English dubs of the
classic anime series: *"Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon".*
Susan was the long-running voice of Sailor Jupiter/Makoto Kino aka "Lita Kino" for the DiC/Pioneer/Cloverway
dub of the anime and the first three films before the new dub by Viz Media (now voiced by Amanda Celine Miller).
Linda was the third actress to voice
Sailor Moon/Usagi Tsukino aka
"Serena Tsukino" for the Cloverway
dub (now voiced by Stephanie Sheh
for the Viz Media dub).
Yes there was way too much sailor Moon voice later on we got more Xenoblade chronicle voice actors
1:15:00 I like how while Britt Alcroft is taking. You hear someone from background say “Woohoo”.
I don’t care how bad this movie is this movie will always have a special in my heart now I need too find the movie with all the unused scenes
Okay, your voices for Toby and Gordon are really good
It's weird that the scenes that shining time which were even filmed at the Isle of Man because of how close it was to England which makes the whole shipping the models over to Canada for filming of the movie a bit pointless
Ah here we have the first “new” video AKA a video that got copyright claimed on the old channel before the Nuke dropped. Glad to see it publicly uploaded
I never saw the movie when I was a Thomas kid growing up, but i did have toys of all the characters. Splatter and dodge were my go to diesels because purple and green are my favourite colors, even though I never saw them in the show and didn’t even know if they were good or bad.
David Mitton did a great job designing Lady, she looks adorable, i really wish instead of the Movie D10, Lady, Splatter & Dodge were just introduced into the Show instead
A movie is perfect to introduce Diesel 10.
Not sure if anybody mentioned this but the rocky grassy set used towards the end of the movie was also used in an old McDonalds commercial.
I love how voice acted that meeting scene yourself. I think that your voice for Gordon and Toby were really accurate.
It’s so confusing that they were RIGHT THERE on the Isle of Man, and somehow still decided to place an inherently British film in rural America and make it this thoroughly insane. Seriously, what were they thinking?
Well, to my understanding, they were able to get filming permits for the live action scenes on the Isle of Man, but they had to find another location to film the engine scenes and Toronto just so happened to have a studio that was affordable to make a feature film rather than episodes of a TV series. I think that’s how it went, someone can correct me if I’m wrong
Yeah, the locations don't really mesh together that well.
Can't wake for the Season 6 review
Same, just a few more videos then I guarantee it will be the next new video
As a kid, I thought the movie took place in the far future, like the first Spongebob movie, which could've explained his return if Calling All Engines took place first.
But obviously, that can't be the case, since it wouldn't explain why the majority of the secondary characters are nowhere to be seen (they could've at least been background characters with no speaking roles)
This is a great examination of the making of the film as well as the things that were lost/removed from it along the way. I remember when this film came out on VHS as a kid and loving the feeling of magical wonder it resonated with as well as being greatly amused by Diesel 10’s scenes (though the scene with him trying to finish off James and Junior was actually quite suspenseful). It’s by no means a perfect film as the finished product shows, but the work print and the various scripts do paint a picture that showed it could’ve been a more cohesive idea if certain things were left in. Especially the scenes involving PT Boomer as well as the scenes between Mara Wilson and Peter Fonda as their characters try to connect.
Regardless, even despite everything wrong with the film, the one thing I love that this video shows is that the cast and crew genuinely loved making this film. They all believed in and admired the characters and world brought into the world by Rev. Awdry and given beautiful life by Britt Allcroft and her team. Another thing I’ll personally bring to attention is the music, as the score for the film is (to me at least) the best aspect in terms of bringing the charm and wonder of Thomas to the big screen. It’s full of innocence and fantastical grandeur while also still retaining the simplicity that makes the Isle of Sodor and its inhabitants so relatable. ☺️
If you ever decide to do another one of these videos, I really hope you do it for ‘Cars’. The script for that film also got massively reworked over its development, and would have plenty of racing-related tidbits to discuss.
imagine if the test audience wasnt a thing, this movie would be epic
Did you not watch this video? They did this movie a favour by making it more of a Thomas movie.
I always assumed since Sir Topham Hatt was away on important business he had Edward pull his special train since he’s the most reliable.
Finaly a new proper unlucky tug video after 1 month
I'm pretty sure the movie and the story could've been much better if they used the original script, i actually liked it.
I also would've liked to see Edward in the movie too. Maybe in a post-credit scene where he comes back with Sir Topham Hatt on his coaches or smth.
Or even in the beginning of the movie having Edward taking sir topham hat out of town. It’s interesting how much the movie got changed, I hope someday we get to see how the film originally went through as a special cut
I seriously doubt it would have been any better with the original script...
I've noticed that in Thomas and the Magic Railroad despite most of the engines being voiced by Canadian actors they were all voiced with British accents with the exception of Gordon who spoke with a mid Atlantic accent Henry who was given a New York sounding accent Diesel 10 who was given a new jersey accent and of course Splatter and Dodge who spoke with very thick Brooklyn accents
yep specifically from Toronto, where the movie was filmed.
You may have heard these actors in cartoons, anime dubs and late 90s-early 00s Capcom video games before.
@@dcb99filmz that's right Eddie Glen who did the voice of Thomas was in a very old anime show Linda Ballentine who did the voice of Percy was the voice of Sailor Moon in the original English dub Susan Roman who did the voice of James was also the voice of one of the main character's in the Canadian cartoon the Raccoons
So much information loved it!!!💕
Okay here’s something silly but I felt like I should tell the story. I got the biggest rush of nostalgia when you mentioned the books and the colouring books having deleted material because many many years ago I was the first person to post about it on UA-cam on my first UA-cam channel. It was called Highvoltageprod (didn’t have enough room for productions). The SiF form people contacted me and asked if they could use the images / info and credit me. They never did credit me but they did use the pictures which I thought was super cool! I completely forgot about it until this video. Thanks for bringing those memories back man. Great video man.
I just went and found the video and first of all holy hell it has 55k views and my parents still have that table / table cloth! What a nostalgia burn
I remember playing the "Diesel 10 Means Trouble" readalong that came with the Calling All Engines DVD as a kid. I always wondered why elements of the story were so different from the TATMR film. Now, I've finally gotten an explanation after more than a decade Lmao
Same thing happened to me lol
This is truely the video of all time
The description says original was uploaded in "2022" but it should say "2023"
It’s now fixed
Great detail tug
Technically, while he is indeed the 10th diesel, Britt said the name just came to her
If I was put in charge of making the "best" version of Thomas and the Magic Railroad, I personally would've taken several elements from all three versions of the movie.
Original Script:
49:17
Mainly because I really like the song, and it would give the engines more screen time.
1:13:03
This would give Thomas another purpose in the movie and make him the REAL hero of the story and a really useful engine.
Workprint:
12:54
I think Susan Roman did a pretty good job, but I prefer Michael Angelis, plus it would make a nice connection to the UK dub of the show
1:00:41
I think it's a pretty sweet scene, and I wish this was left in the final movie
1:02:37
To add more screen time for Thomas
1:10:23
More interactions between Lily and Thomas
Deleted Scenes I would include:
44:39
45:53
Final Movie:
Keep most of it the same except for the changes listed above and remove the scene at 36:06.
Overall, I would make all these changes to give the engines more screen time and include the deleted scenes that I think should've been in the final movie.
I find it funny how an explanation video of this movie is nearly as long as the movie itself
Maybe one day, would you ever consider doing another one of these? I would really like to see you annotate one of your favorite specials. You could show us exactly what it means to you in almost real time.
