Update: inspired by the encouraging comments on sleeve lining, I finally added them to finish the jacket in a new video! ua-cam.com/video/fIZpdlRsYM8/v-deo.html this suit was the closest thing to a 2020 final boss for me 💪 so many sewing techniques that I've been trying to master this year all packed into one outfit. It felt so good to put the suit on!!! like I said at the end of the vid I can't thank you all enough for your kind comments that help steer me in the right direction. This channel is becoming quite a testament to my sewing growth over the years and I hope it encourages you on your own growth journey 💕we've got a few more vids coming to wrap up the year, see you soon!
I am happy when I can sew a straight hem, but so enjoy watching videos both for the artistic results and the insertion of self-deprecating (my go-to) humor! ❤️🧵🪡 (and a BIG thank you to Julia for allowing that extra time for Wendy-comments).
I'm so happy for you and I love this channel! Ooh, maybe a video idea could be to retry sewing things you've failed at before or didn't like the result of? Seeing progress is so important for us creative folks, as it's easy to forget that you don't have to be good at something from the beginning.
When you used the lutterloh system last time I felt like I've seen something similar before...then I realised that my grandma used the system for sewing and we actually "inherited" it. I found it at my Moms house and used it to make a simple top. It was super fun and simple and I felt like my grandma would have been proud of me. So thank you for reminding me of her and encouraging me to create something😊
I'm a weaver, and it's been a dream of mine to make a Chanel suit out of my handwoven fabric! This helped me feel more confident about taking on that challenge (especially the tips about interfacing and the blanket stitch sewing foot), thank you so much!!!
In engineering we use "dimensionless numbers". Sometimes if you take a ratio of two or more measurements you can describe a system with the resulting number, or in this case, a garment! The lutterloh system is probably based on some dimensionless numbers that they've found are related to all the other garment's measurements. We use these numbers a lot in chemical engineering, they're super useful!
When I watch your videos my mood swings between "wow, this is amazing" "I think I could do this" "What foot?" "Ok I don't get it" "I would fail miserably at this" "I will probably never try to do this anyways" "Wow, this is incredible"
The amount of “oohs” and “omg that turned out so cute”s that came out of my mouth while watching is astounding. You’ve improved so much since your appearance on that contest show. I also love how you make the clothes with the intention of actually wearing them. So good!
That skirt suit is so classy! I can see it being the kind of piece in your wardrobe that gets used for years because those Chanel style suits have been in for decades and it can be used for so many occasions.
Wendy, you are very creative and Channel is one of my favorite designers and I am in the process of making a Channel jacket. Your jacket is wonderful and looks gorgeous on you. By using the chain as a accent on the front was a genius idea as I have not seen that before, usually it is inside the coat to weight it down. Ikea would never have thought that one of their blanket could look so awesome as a Channel suit. I am really proud of you as you keep learning new techniques, tip, and tricks to sharpen your couture sewing skills. Keep up the good work.
I love how this turned out! Lined sleeves is not that hard there’s a good trick for lining up the bottom of the sleeves and then turning it right side out after, I believe in you! If you have any extra chain I think the skirt would look awesome with chain sewn around the bottom where the ruffle joins the top part. As for pockets, with those style of pockets you can sew the front pocket to the front edge, the back pocket to the back edge, and then sew the outer edge of the pocket and the side seam all in one go. It’s a little bit easier. Hope that helps can’t wait to see what you make next!!
You and Julia are my new hero’s. I have been sewing for over 50 years, I have never heard of the Lutterloh method. Before I finished the video, I went and bought the system. Amazing two measurements and you created an outfit. Why wasn’t this ever taught before, the biggest frustration for home sewers is getting the patterns to fit. The jacket and skirt so awesome. I am following you forever.
As a graduate majoring in fashion design, one thing I can tell u about interfacing is to not steam iron it !!! The steam will shrink the fabric underneath somehow although it’s not obvious but overtime the interfacing will eventually pop off the fabric and leave the garment floppy and weird :/ just thought whoever that sees this would wanna know haha
The suit turned out beautifully. I just made one that took 4 weeks to make. Trial and error....alot of trial and error. Chanel used to sew chain across the inside of the back of the jacket to keep it hanging perfectly straight. This can be done visibly or invisibly by sewing it behind the lining of the jacket. She did it both ways. I put mine inside the lining as I didn't want to feel cold chain against my skin in the cold weather...just in case my sweater or top rose up and exposed my skin. It can also be uncomfortable when seated for a long time, i.e. air flight. You could attach it with snaps if you wanted to remove it while seated for a long time. I am always impressed with your work...it is amazing!
wendy was procrastinating completing my sewing project so I sat on my bed and decided to watch UA-cam. I clicked on this video and before the ad could finish I transferred to my laptop and begin watching while I continue sewing. Inspiring as always
Amazing job Wendy.... just an FYI Chanel jackets have chain sewn into the hem to weight it down and the lining sometimes has sewn vertical channels ....l
WOW!! This is one of my FAVORITE projects from you so far. It turned out AMAZINGLY. Love the green + chain detail it really takes it to a whole new level. And shout out to Julia - - having a super assistant is priceless.
When square space first came out so many graphic designers were excited. I was one of them! Your suit is excellent. I tried making things out of blankets, but my daughter would beg me for them. She was cute and I couldn’t resist. Now that she’s going to college. I can sneak a blanket garment in.

Hi im not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but a suggestion re: the skirt and lining etc. you can reduce the bulk of the ruffle hem by stitching a piece of lining the same size as the ruffle along the hem edge and then turning the piece. The lining for the main skirt should be cut a seam allowance width longer. Stitch the ruffle to the main skirt, press the seam up, and then press under a seam allowance width along the lower edge of the lining.
