I see a lot of comments about Micarah's Couch-Jackie-Kennedy-60s-look and it makes me so happy to see the sewing community being the most supportive friendly and wholesome place on youtube
Update: inspired by the encouraging comments on sleeve lining, I finally added them to finish the jacket in a new video! ua-cam.com/video/fIZpdlRsYM8/v-deo.html this suit was the closest thing to a 2020 final boss for me 💪 so many sewing techniques that I've been trying to master this year all packed into one outfit. It felt so good to put the suit on!!! like I said at the end of the vid I can't thank you all enough for your kind comments that help steer me in the right direction. This channel is becoming quite a testament to my sewing growth over the years and I hope it encourages you on your own growth journey 💕we've got a few more vids coming to wrap up the year, see you soon!
I am happy when I can sew a straight hem, but so enjoy watching videos both for the artistic results and the insertion of self-deprecating (my go-to) humor! ❤️🧵🪡 (and a BIG thank you to Julia for allowing that extra time for Wendy-comments).
I'm so happy for you and I love this channel! Ooh, maybe a video idea could be to retry sewing things you've failed at before or didn't like the result of? Seeing progress is so important for us creative folks, as it's easy to forget that you don't have to be good at something from the beginning.
Wendy: "To make this Chanel-inspired suit, I'm using...." MICARAH TEWERS WHEELS IN A COUCH Wendy: "This lovely blanket!" MICARAH WHEELS COUCH BACK OUT, FOLLOWED BY A SMALL BIRD.
As a graduate majoring in fashion design, one thing I can tell u about interfacing is to not steam iron it !!! The steam will shrink the fabric underneath somehow although it’s not obvious but overtime the interfacing will eventually pop off the fabric and leave the garment floppy and weird :/ just thought whoever that sees this would wanna know haha
When you used the lutterloh system last time I felt like I've seen something similar before...then I realised that my grandma used the system for sewing and we actually "inherited" it. I found it at my Moms house and used it to make a simple top. It was super fun and simple and I felt like my grandma would have been proud of me. So thank you for reminding me of her and encouraging me to create something😊
In engineering we use "dimensionless numbers". Sometimes if you take a ratio of two or more measurements you can describe a system with the resulting number, or in this case, a garment! The lutterloh system is probably based on some dimensionless numbers that they've found are related to all the other garment's measurements. We use these numbers a lot in chemical engineering, they're super useful!
I'm a weaver, and it's been a dream of mine to make a Chanel suit out of my handwoven fabric! This helped me feel more confident about taking on that challenge (especially the tips about interfacing and the blanket stitch sewing foot), thank you so much!!!
When I watch your videos my mood swings between "wow, this is amazing" "I think I could do this" "What foot?" "Ok I don't get it" "I would fail miserably at this" "I will probably never try to do this anyways" "Wow, this is incredible"
Wendy, you are very creative and Channel is one of my favorite designers and I am in the process of making a Channel jacket. Your jacket is wonderful and looks gorgeous on you. By using the chain as a accent on the front was a genius idea as I have not seen that before, usually it is inside the coat to weight it down. Ikea would never have thought that one of their blanket could look so awesome as a Channel suit. I am really proud of you as you keep learning new techniques, tip, and tricks to sharpen your couture sewing skills. Keep up the good work.
Hi Wendy, Shoulder darts aren't always the best option for jackets especially with thicker fabrics, i would suggest either an armhole or bust dart. Also, I think removing the ruffle from the skirt would elevate the entire look. A circular ruffle would have been great but there isn't enough fabric. Very nice job as always!
for a CHANEL jacket you do want shoulder darts, even princess seams instead of armhole or bust darts. Karl even put zippers on the shoulder darts for the fall 2013 haute couture collection!
The amount of “oohs” and “omg that turned out so cute”s that came out of my mouth while watching is astounding. You’ve improved so much since your appearance on that contest show. I also love how you make the clothes with the intention of actually wearing them. So good!
You and Julia are my new hero’s. I have been sewing for over 50 years, I have never heard of the Lutterloh method. Before I finished the video, I went and bought the system. Amazing two measurements and you created an outfit. Why wasn’t this ever taught before, the biggest frustration for home sewers is getting the patterns to fit. The jacket and skirt so awesome. I am following you forever.
I love how this turned out! Lined sleeves is not that hard there’s a good trick for lining up the bottom of the sleeves and then turning it right side out after, I believe in you! If you have any extra chain I think the skirt would look awesome with chain sewn around the bottom where the ruffle joins the top part. As for pockets, with those style of pockets you can sew the front pocket to the front edge, the back pocket to the back edge, and then sew the outer edge of the pocket and the side seam all in one go. It’s a little bit easier. Hope that helps can’t wait to see what you make next!!
When square space first came out so many graphic designers were excited. I was one of them! Your suit is excellent. I tried making things out of blankets, but my daughter would beg me for them. She was cute and I couldn’t resist. Now that she’s going to college. I can sneak a blanket garment in.
That skirt suit is so classy! I can see it being the kind of piece in your wardrobe that gets used for years because those Chanel style suits have been in for decades and it can be used for so many occasions.
Amazing job Wendy.... just an FYI Chanel jackets have chain sewn into the hem to weight it down and the lining sometimes has sewn vertical channels ....l
I also really appreciate the tip about fusing interfacing to the "wrong" side before cutting. If only I'd seen this before making my daughter a mouse costume out of a similar chenille blanket. I barely won the race to sew and finish the seams before the fabric raveled.
The suit turned out beautifully. I just made one that took 4 weeks to make. Trial and error....alot of trial and error. Chanel used to sew chain across the inside of the back of the jacket to keep it hanging perfectly straight. This can be done visibly or invisibly by sewing it behind the lining of the jacket. She did it both ways. I put mine inside the lining as I didn't want to feel cold chain against my skin in the cold weather...just in case my sweater or top rose up and exposed my skin. It can also be uncomfortable when seated for a long time, i.e. air flight. You could attach it with snaps if you wanted to remove it while seated for a long time. I am always impressed with your work...it is amazing!
The whole look is elevated, the ribbon thru the chain is top drawer details ladies, you are working woth the mad skills i swear!! 😂 I love all the talent im seeing keep up the amazing work!! ❤❤❤
The matte chain goes really well with the Tweed and the way you curved the chai around the button on the sleeve is very Chanel like! You did a great job considering the chaos you had getting there, LoL!
WENDY and JULIA!! First off wow and bow to your amazing creation 💕 second I MUST know where Julia got her beautiful black dress at 15:45 when she is courageously threading the chain! I have found true (dress) love 😍😍
Wow! I was watching some of your videos while working, so I had the sound off. I was expecting a cute doll voice, now I see you have a deep feminine voice, what a surprise! Love your videos.
You go, girl! Okay, I am going back to my fifth quilted zipper bag project. I am two months into my new sewing hobby and aspiring to level up my skills to make PAJAMA PANTS🤣
wendy was procrastinating completing my sewing project so I sat on my bed and decided to watch UA-cam. I clicked on this video and before the ad could finish I transferred to my laptop and begin watching while I continue sewing. Inspiring as always
I wanted to hop on and say that I have the same sewing system book at home. If you are looking for one they are often available on eBay. Mine was $75 on eBay but with my weight fluctuation it has been worth the price! I love these videos! Such great inspiration!
if you had it in red we would look straight out of a Christmas card walking down the street. Gotta be handing out candy canes or something to complete the picture
WOW!! This is one of my FAVORITE projects from you so far. It turned out AMAZINGLY. Love the green + chain detail it really takes it to a whole new level. And shout out to Julia - - having a super assistant is priceless.
So, so cute. Fantastic transformation. Suggestion about maintaining a suit or coats: Please dry-clean only. Tossing something as beautiful as this wonderful suit into the washer and dryer could ruin all of your hard work. Hope this is helpful. Happy designing and sewing everyone.
Wow! I'm not a skirt-suit-wearing kind of gal, but I would wear this! I LOVE the ribbon-woven chain detail! Definitely worth the 2+ hours it took! Great job, Wendy and Julia!!
This looks amazing. Funny thing is, I was glancing from my screen to my Christmas tree 🎄. We have the exact same blanket and it is being used as our tree skirt 😂 So ours is a skirt as well, but just not as fancy as yours.
okay WOW, everything about this set is unspeakably beautiful!!!! you and Julia outdid yourselves with this one. the tiny tiny details in the chain placement, the cut of the skirt (with POCKETS, a fantastic addition), and all of it in the most lush of greens is making me heart eyes. you should be seriously proud of yourselves :)
Julia is such a queen! Lovely finished pieces, great job to you both! I'm jealous of your iron upgrade, I'm currently sewing/ironing with a rusty dusty mini sunbeam🙃
I lurve the skirt!!! So chic! I saw a video of you with platinum hair before this one. It's like night and day. I love the platinum on you. Please keep it!!!
7:19 I have been eyeballing the blanket on my couch and wondering if it was an IKEA blanket. Mine is grey and has fringe but the fabric looks the same. Hmm, it might disappear from the couch and become a jacket soon. 🤔 The suit is adorable. And you helped my brain with the whole pocket issue. I can now see how an invisible zipper would work there. Thank you.
I am obsessed - and that lutterloh?! Why did I go to school for 2 years when this existed 😩 It's too much for me at this point. Bless that I found your channel- excited to discover more of what you make and come up with!
Hi im not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but a suggestion re: the skirt and lining etc. you can reduce the bulk of the ruffle hem by stitching a piece of lining the same size as the ruffle along the hem edge and then turning the piece. The lining for the main skirt should be cut a seam allowance width longer. Stitch the ruffle to the main skirt, press the seam up, and then press under a seam allowance width along the lower edge of the lining. You can then either handstitch or topstitch the lower edge of the lining over the raw edges of the lined skirt ruffle. Thats a beautiful color btw. I love the suit. Im a sucker for Chanel...!!
Hi! I was half asleep watching this so I might've missed it but how was the chain attached to the jacket? Love your videos btw, it gives me so much inspiration💜
That jacket is great! Good job! I love the idea of using a blanket for fabric. Once you open your mind to thrifted fabric, you have so many more choices! And it's so inexpensive, and better for the environment. Keep on showing us your talent!
I've been watching your videos for years now and just got my first sewing machine! Thanks for inspiring me, I can't wait to do some thrift flips of my own :)
I heard three words out of your mouth and I smacked the subscribe button. You have such a gloriously listenable voice! Then the content was fantastic too. Made my whole day.
i feel like this would be way easier without the ruffle and i'd prefer a skirt suit w a more form fitting, straight/pencil skirt ish type skirt but DAAAAAMMMNN SLAAAYYYYYYYY
For couture jackets like the chanel suit they would use a silk gazar or heavy organza that is hand quilted with the lining. For warmth there may be a wool batting put in place for quilting.
WENDY!!! My friend and I learned how to sew a t-shirt from one of your videos in 2016. It's so crazy to see you evolve to do projects like this! Incredible! You're amazing
Thank you for sharing facts about the fashion supply chain! Our garment workers are severely underpaid so I'm happy to see people with large followings, such as yourself, educate others about the issue.
That suit is gorgeous, so I tried to find the book, sadly the cheapest I could find was over £50. Heyho I'll keep looking. Love the tip about sewing the bottom edge of the pocket on first, then invisible handsewing the sides, will certainly be doing that from now on! Thank you! Lots of very useful info generally, including about linings (which I still haven't ever done after 40 odd years sewing) maybe now is the time...
That suit was flawless, classical and thoroughly pretty (without being PRETTY). This comes from a subscriber that never wears, buys or even thinks about suits.
@@mikimizutani4601 They are Biko! I don't think they're in stock anymore but almost all my earrings are Biko and you can use code WITHWENDY if you like anything there for 10% off
I kind of think this is my favorite outfit you've ever done! It just looks so crisp and luxe!!! The way you styled it also makes it look super good. I hope I can get to this level of sewing one day!
Wow, I am SO IMPRESSED! The suit came out amazing, and I loved the Wendy in Paris reveal!!! I hope I can get to this level of detail and finishing in my home sewing someday.
Dang props to julia for weaving the ribbon into the chain, it honestly elevated the jacket to the next level :0

A tip for you and Julia when I weave ribbon into chain I use a yarn needle and treat it as if I were sewing

Wendy your voice is nice and adds more allure to your video, Is nice to see people giving credit to others well done!
I am so sorry to be this person and get totally off topic but where are these earrings from?
Which ones?
@@withwendy I want to know where the first ones are from!
WHEN I SEE MY NAMEEEE I CLICK.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH ALREADY.
It is such a good idea to use other items such as a blanket to use as material to make clothes. Fantastic.
Your Jacket is way better tbh or maybe it's the styling that made the original jacket look bad anyways you did amazing as always.
Wow, I am SO IMPRESSED! The suit came out amazing, and I loved the Wendy in Paris reveal!!! I hope I can get to this level of detail and finishing in my home sewing someday.
My dream is to be able to make the &other stories corduroy overalls that best bestdressed wear all the time.... please help me 🥺🥺
Can you drop a link for it? I'm looking for an overall that's stylish and all the ones that I found aren't what I'm looking for
It's nice to see/hear that Julia is being recognized all throughout the project/s.
