Every time I make something, I think about how grateful I am to my mother and her mother (my Nanna) for teaching me how to sew. I don't even want to think about how much money I've saved over the years by making my own clothes, or altering clothes I already own to make it fit better or make something entirely new with it.

Thanks for 10 years of learning how to sew and sharing that with you all! Some of you might not know, but I'm a combination of raised by a sewing mom and self-taught since moving out on my own. Successfully making something that I love without a guidebook gives me immense satisfaction, and I hope this channel can be an encouragement to you on trying new skills and witnessing how you grow! Sending you all my love this holiday season as we wrap up 2019

Sewing has taught me so much about thrifting. I can recognize good construction and natural materials now more readily since I started sewing so regularly. Binding every seam with bias tape is very couture. I'm so impressed that you unpicked all that quilting to make the bias tape! Feels like thrifting and sewing is the way outta the fast fashion mess we all find the world in right now. You're the best Wendy!

Way back when.... at least 50 years ago, in 'needlework' class at school, I was taught that when you make your own bias binding, you cut the ends at a 45° angle. This way when you sew them together they aren't thick in one spot, if you know what I mean. I took needlework for 3 years which I seldom use, but is helpful when I need to sew a button, or hem things!!!

SO FLUFFY! just a few quick tips, when you join bias tape do it on a diagonal so the bulk of the seam is staggered and not just one big bump to sew over (there are lots of tutorials on joining bias). Also: for diagonal/curved necklines if you stay stitch (straight stitch a line of normal size stitches close to the neckline edge right after you cut it out} you won't get the wobble/stretching that makes it not lie flat. I might need to make one of these coats now!

I may not try all of the tutorials you post, but I still feel like I am not scared to try something because you give me confidence, and knowing you fight with the machine also helps motivate me lol. Thanks for being great! Love you!

This is such a fun silhouette! How warm is it? Wear it with long matching gloves! To join shorter sections of bias tape, sew it along the grain - i.e. bias to the bias. Less puckering and it distributes the thickness of the seam over a longer area so it looks smoother.

  • @katz57
    @katz57 5 років тому

Yes, that was great and you went all out this time! I loved the way you did the seams with your own tape.

Your voice and demeanor are incredibly relaxing. I don't mean this offensively, your content is by no means boring, but I could fall asleep to you just talking. 😂 You're so talented. I hope to be as skilled some day! Great video! Merry Christmas!

I never realised how hard Cecilie Bahnsen is to pronounce for non-Scandinavians lol. Anyways I love love love this!!!! Your soft voice, the Bahnsen design, your down to earth but very knowledgeable and inspiring approach 🥰

withwendy you are quite close!! I think it’s because you say ce-ci-le and not ce-ci-li-e 💌✨and I just want to say that it doesn’t matter at all when you’ve obviously done your homework - if someone just showed me your finished garment I would assume it was a Bahnsen original. And your visual pedagogy around pretty complex projects is really admirable as well, thank you for making the videos you make!! I know it’s hard to be in both the creative process of the thing itself and then also the documentation of said thing, you pull it off seamlessly (pun intended) :-) I’ll stop gushing now lol

That is a beautiful coat! It would make a great bridal and/or attendant accessory for a winter wedding. Maybe also include a white sherpa scarf trimmed with some glittery lace?

I know this is 11 months old, but it's just amazing! And Relevant again since it's cold again! I'm just watching all of your videos while I'm working on a quilt (haven't branched into sewing garments yet but maybe you'll give me the confidence...some day...)

This is nice. Good job. When making your own bias, it’s best to join separate pieces at an angled versus straight across like you did in the end. It will make the bias tape sit more nicely. This is still very good for your first attempt at binding

Lovely coat! You can, and should be, proud!
I am pretty much self taught myself. It is a journey, but really fun! Experience and having a go at things, are the key. Specially the latter😅😂.
Most often it goes ok. And trying and failing, using the head on troubleshooting, is essential. Good for you, girl. Keep it comming.

A really good time saving way to rip seams out is to use a razor blade. The regular rectangular kind that go in a safety razor. You basically just touch it to the threads and they cut, it's amazing. So much faster than a seam ripper! Love the jacket.

Yesssssss! I'm soooo excited you did this because I have also pinned this coat and thrifted a blanket in deep blue-green satin-finish to make it. Not sure it will look as fab as your bound edges... But thrilled for this video!
