ABOUT:
Hi, I'm Wendy, and I have been on a sewing journey ever since my mom taught me how to make little outfits for my dolls. I studied engineering and business, had an office job for two years, and then quit to embark on a lifelong sewing adventure on UA-cam. Subscribe to join me on the adventure, and maybe make your own clothing too! Thanks for watching ❤️"
I had this exact twin quilt in 1981. I think I bought it and matching sheet set at Kmart in Kentucky, where I lived at the time. I was 18 years old and this was my first apartment on my own. So cool seeing it transformed into a coat. Good job. Your daughter is adorable 🥹💕
People always say that the main difference in sewing machines is the number of stiches/attachments, etc but in my book the thing that marks the difference between high end and beginner is how quiet the machine is. Your new machine sounds terrific. My beginner level machine sounds so clunky and noisy in comparison!
Wendy checking out herself after sewing the collar beautifully and saying, "Oh my gooooooosh" is such a mood.
definitely the outcome of me holding my breath for the entire project LOL
@@withwendy worth it!
Oh man as someone who’s watched your channel for more than 6 years, this video was pure JOY to watch! Everything you’ve learned was on display in executing new tasks that are NOT easy (as someone who’s sewed many men’s shirts). The jacket is beautiful and your approach to sewing is so refreshing to watch!
Thank you so so much for all the years and for sharing in my joy!!
This video was so fun to watch! Way above my sewing level-but it’s okay to set GOALS!! Lol. Very cute. Did you have enough material to make your little girl a coat as well? We want to see pics.
21:53 glad I'm not the only one who does that with my sewing projects 😊
Marla’s gonna grow up and see the fashion trends and ask Wendy “mom, can I have that?” to which Wendy would say “I can do it. Probably better too."
Props to you Wendy. You're the GOAT
Marla’s little hello to the camera was the cutest thing!!! The jacket turned out so nicely as well. I hope its ready for the Canadian winter weather
Marla said 👋
I don't care about sewing at all. I just watch your videos because I enjoy your personality! I hope all is well!
I've clearly been gone for a while. You have a whole beautiful baby! I absolutely love how you walk through your sewing projects. I would have gone on hiatus at the sleeve adjustments. Which reminds me that I have a project to finish. Thanks so much!
it turned out so nice!! the pattern on the blanket is so lovely
Thank you so much!!
Your attention to detail is incredible! Adding volume to the side and sleeve, specifically to the back and then paying attention to where the sleeve is gathered at the placket. You make me want to pay more attention to everything when I’m sewing.
a blanket like this would make into a nice warm slip for a long skirt as well. I love remaking things! It lets you be more creative which is quite empowering!
Wooow. I can’t imagine being able to make clothes like this on my own. This is the type of jacket that I would dream of and never afford, and you can MAKE it 😍. The amount of hard work you must have put in to get to this level. 👏🏻👏🏻
100% feel the same I watched this all in awe! Even tho she explains things when I watch her do them my mind is just like”WOW ITS MAGIC!” I am blown away
I love how informative you are with your sewing machine (and just sewing in general) with how much you clearly show your progress and the text bubbles in the bottom left 💚💚💚
WENDY! I don't know how but I thrifted a pillow case with the EXACT SAME flower pattern, which I am using in my own jacket coat 😆wild.
omigoodness how do we setup a scenario where we coincidentally run into one another??!!
This is a runway piece! Better than a runway piece probably with your attention to detail. What a dream ❤
marla’s facial features make her look SO much like dan!! she’s so cute, i love her little noises 😭
I can only aspire to that kind of sewing ability but this is beautiful
you can do it!!! just keep learning!!!
I think it'd be nice if this coat had a few stitches of red or gold embroidery thread running through it in certain places.
Love it! Was kinda hoping you'd have enough quilt to make a jacket for Marla. It'd be soooo cute!
THERE IS ENOUGH FABRIC!! Her jacket is coming soon!
Your channel has helped me realize a more profound appreciation of the process of clothes-making and all the little detailing that goes into it to make a piece look clean and tidy. It isn't easy, but the results are beyond amazing!! You did so good!!!
It's been a while since I've watched your channel - I don't plan on missing more! Just love your quiet excitement and energy, as well as willingness to try new things. Thank you for sharing your make of such a fabulous blanket coat! Turned out wonderfully!
there is such an expertise in being able to see your favourite clothes/inspo and break them down into parts. that attention to detail about the sleeves! so cool
When I draft a pattern if I don't do a mock up I at least have an armhole measurement for sleeveless, sleeves and jackets saved. Reference these to make sure it is correct before cuting things out. Oh and jacket I always draft two sizes bigger in my measurements. If it is an already drafted pattern for a coat or jacket by someone else stick with what thier instructions say.
Literally stunning, that quilt was a great find but what you did with it was even better! You inspire me to take my time and do things right with sewing instead of just trying to get it done lol
The coat is great, but I can't concentrate on the video because I've played that flute concerto before and I keep getting distracted 😂😂😂😂😂😅
you've played that??!! :O
@@withwendy I have!!! It's an absolutely wild ride start to finish :) I took my flute very seriously as a kid/teen and now flute for a living! (as well as composing/writing fairy folk and songs!) ☺️
Wow props to your flute skills!!
Well I play the flute too! But I didn’t even know there was flute on this video because I always turn the volume off and turn on the closed captioning. I guess I should listen again.
@@theemeraldruby that's so cool!!
your whole aesthetic-chic-but-cheeky-vibe is just so inspiring!! I've been in a sewing rut trying to work myself through some shelved stuff and this whole thing is making me excited to get going again.
Love the jacket and i'm glad you gave it the runway moment it deserved 🥰
reminds me of mariah leonard in the makeup world!
Genius idea using the already finished blanket edge for the front of your coat!
I have a suspicion that Wendy just really wants me to make a blanket coat. Every year I say - this is so cool, I gotta do it - and then life gets in the way, but Wendy reminds me every year. Thank you! I really hope that this year I will get to it
I made a coat years ago in a quilted blue and white toille fabric. I loved it. Recently I was thinking about making another one. You have inspired me to do so! Yours turned out beautifully! Great tutorial!
I really appreciate you throwing in those little definitions of sewing terms for those of us just dipping our toes into this world! Also just love your videos in general. And BEAUTIFUL COAT!!!
It’s effortlessly chic to wear 😮 I love the delicate pattern and the sleeves are everything
Chefs kiss 😘 There really should be a saying to illustrate a well done sewing project! Bobbins poppin 🤷🏻♀️Well done Wendy well done!!
So amazing! In the 70’s I had that same bed quilt, sheets and curtains! They were a gift from my sister. I loved them so much, the pattern and colors were so pleasing! Amazing to see you up cycling the same quilt here in 2023!!!😮❤
I found your channel a few weeks ago. I have enjoyed watching you sew garments and puzzle out the details of finishing them... Which reminds me of my mom so much with all the pieces pinned to their pattern parts and her talking to herself about the mechanics of how she is going to put them together. (We rarely did projects together and I have never constructed a garment on my own, really just modifying things).
Then you add these tidbits with your daughter and I am flipped around and remembering my kids (16 and 11) when they were little toddlers loving keys and laughing just like this (there is a reason companies make those plastic key rings... kids really love keys. I let my kids play with my actual keys all the time... only downside was one time my son (who loved putting things inside other things) was playing with my key ring and it disappeared into one of the million containers you could put things into and he couldn't talk. He eventually figured out what we wanted and he brought them to me... but man that story reminds me of how crazy toddlers are!) Thanks for the inspiring memories of being a daughter and a mom to littles, it's the best!
Loved the runway walk Wendy! Your new blanket shacket is a great success. Fun trip to the button shop. AND Marla!!!! YAAAAYYYYY
i feel like pockets with a fuzzy lining on the inside would be sooo nice! especially when it's super cold
“I have no intention of popping my collar” 😂 love seeing how excited and proud you are with the finished product, it’s beautiful!!
honestly the nicest blanket coat I've seen so far on the internet. thank you for sharing your are very talented and have very good taste. Usually all what I see is not that elegant and really look like if my young daughter made it!
the shoulders and the yoke on the back are such a pleasing shape!!!
I have curtains with that exact print that my mother made out of bedsheets in the 90s. It must have come from the same bedding set as this quilt. Watching you make this print that is so personally nostalgic for me into a beautiful garment was delightful. I really appreciate how you showed us your drafting process.
The thrift flips are back!!!!! YESSSSSS!!!!! 🙌🙌🙌
That baby was just in your belly!!!! Seeing her talk and walk around is so beautiful 😢❤
I’m not new to you, but my rural European life means that some videos are meaningful, others just a pastime. This one is a masterwork. Anyone, anywhere, at any age could wear this with pride. Your solutions along the way made sense and were easy to understand. It couldn’t be bettered, IMO. Bravissima!
PS/ the baby is a fabulous production, too.
Simply stunning!!! ✨ It is ro refreshing to see the rare mixture of experienced hability, challenged learning and just good vibes through the whole process. Always a delight to get the chance to see you work. Thank you!
I have seen on the internet a few people showing the clothes they are sewing. They all tace the patterns to the seem allowance and not to the sew line. I learnt to sew with my mother with an old Singer that was powered by that foot pedal. Then at middle school we had a class for knitting, sew etc. We had an after school hours for advanced students to get real tailoring basics. We learnt how to measure body make a basic pattern for a shirt top, skirt, pants etc. With required darts. Then anything could be altered by moving darts from the point around 360 degrees as we wanted them. That was in mid 1970's (yeah, I am old😄). I also used to buy German magazines Burda and Neue Mode that had a lot of different patterns and I still have them, even here in the USA. I never saw anyone draw patterns where the seam allowance was added to the pattern. The pattern was always exactly where the seam line was, then we traced it with that little wheel and tracing paper and added seam allowance as much as we wanted, I add a little more to neck line and side seams and more to any hemlines. That is still the way I sew, especially with fitted clothes like in tailoring.
I can understand that in modern times with disposable culture almost nothing is fitter any more. Especially here in USA the made in China t-shirts have all wonky seams, they are worn only a few times and after thrown to trash. But it is difficult to find jeans etc that fit well showing why carefully sewn clothes are much more comfortable. I know everyone who is from my country sews the way I do, is this making patterns by including the seam allowance the usual way in here? I never did any sewing, knitting, crocheting, wood working and crafts as my occupation, only as a hobby. I know I am meticulous due to my occupation, one can say I am persnickety, but doesn't anyone do any more accurate seams and sew lines, is that only my leftover from youth in Europe?
oh that turned out so beautiful! and sagwa's so cute when she's hanging out with you while you work!
Very cute! Marla looks so much like Dan. 😊 have a wonderful day! Christine 🇨🇦
aside from the beautiful jacket that you have birthed, marla is the sweetest thing ever i am so in love with her!! she is sooo adorable i can’t get enough of her!! 😭
That coat/jacket is absolutely gor-juss!! Off-topic, your daughter is soooo adorable and the cat is cute and funny❣️
Wendy it is perfect. And Marla is talking! Yayyyyyyyyyy!
What about Marla’s coat! Also so happy to see a video from you! Marla looks so much like her father. It’s precious :)
I have 3 vintage Bernina 830 Records and 3 930 records in my non-profit sewing school. They are so strong and smooth and I love the quick change feet. I made a quilted coat last winter as a test for a class using the free Mood Fabric Bellis Coat and then donated to a homeless shelter. I will refer my students to this video as a refresher for my class. You are an excellent teacher
You did a fantastic job! And it must have been so fun to use the Bernina on the quilted fabric! I was a Home Ec teacher many moons ago and it’s good to see you doing inspirational tutorials. And you’re so low key….ez to watch. Great job making the video…you not only had patience constructing/designing, but setting up the cameras and getting the right shots! Way to go!
Your unintentionally funny, like I can’t stop laughing/giggling while watching and my family is sleeping lol
the painter’s tape is kind of a vibe with the pink walls, maybe a nice pistachio green trim would be cute in your sewing room
Hey Wendy, you can separate the lining from the fabric and use just the fabric for the backside of your collar. Then you won't see the lining.
Ok! But I want to see Marla jacket as well 🙌🏻
This is so pretty!!!! Makes me want one and I and not one for blanket jackets. 😂
You blow me away. You are always extending yourself and making such interesting garments. This is no exception, such an amazing piece.
This coat would look amazing with a contrasting belt, maybe in a green from the leaves.
Now that’s a beautiful cozy jacket/coat. Well done Wendy!
Love Marla little voice ❤
Ive never watched your videos before and when you mentioned a mini coat for marla I was expecting her to be a pet hahah I was so pleasantly surprised she's the cutest little baby!
Loving your hair cut! Omg Marla is so big , beautiful 😻
I've watched a lot of youtube videos recently that they were sponsored by threadup. Your's is the first one that actually inspired me to go check it out. That coat... those shoes... that HAT!
Also, that coat! 🤩Talented! And Marlaaa 🥺so cute she hurts my heart.
Bish I cannot believe you made this omg I need to recreate this ASAP!!!!!! Ugh I’m so in love….. with you, with this piece, the video wow. Thank you for being my inspiration for so so so many years
15:58 a tip from menstailor to you, for an easier way of sewing on a collar: so, easier is to stop the seam 1cm from the edge at start and beginning of inserting the collar between the 2 stands, than, its easier if u pin the inside stand on the neckline (right side of the inner stand on the left side of the neckline), u can work with the 1cm u left open at the beginning of the stand here much easier. Then u can pin or iron (recommend iron on ironable fabrics, yours is difficult though) and u iron the seamallowance 0,75 cm inward, than u can stepp it down. Like that, the more visible topsticth from the right side of the stand is cleaner, inside its maybe messier, but noone will see it anyway. (excuse my english, not a native)
i love it!! so cozy...ans couture! maybe instead of belt loops, you can sew the belt to the back waist (you know, you make the box of stitching with the "x" of stitches from corner to corner inside the box) to save bulk. love that you can keep refining it as you need!
I love this coat! from the fabric to the style! Also just love watching these relaxing and sewing motivation-inducing videos! Wonderful!! Also caught the British accent - made me LOL and impromptu song - I love the vibe!
The sleeves are so beautiful. The placket and collar content is relatable
I never thought a blanket would look as beautiful as a coat. I need to try😊😊😊
I'm seriously falling in love with this channel. I'm not a garment sewist, but you're inspiring me.
For your next blanket coat, if you have a collar stand, use a cotton or lightweight flannel for the lining side. Nancy Zieman has some good tips for collars and collar stands.
It's so funny, we had our babies very close together, and I really enjoy seeing Marla and going oh look she's also doing x and y just like my son. It adds another level of enjoyment to what are already such enjoyable videos.
I don't know if its the print, or silhouette, or how you masterfully sewed it all together - but whatever it is - i think this is probably my favorite thing you have ever made! I wish it was something i could buy!!! Gorgeous!
This has nothing to do with the coat, but I wanted to say I think this is the best hairstyle I have seen on you. You look so good.
I have been following you for many years now, and you improved so much!! Congrats🎉 wonderful job, you are really inspiring ♥️
" you never cruise to the finish" waaaaahaaaaaaaa so very very very true 😅
Love the Jacket, i especially love the sleeve and the calf. I also love the hair it's very elegant and suits you. 😍😍😍
Wow! It came out SO lovely! That fabric is gorgeous and was definitely begging to become a coat.
I love this! As a beginner sewer, every time I watch your channel I feel a little overwhelmed but how AMAZING everything comes out. I watch it for inspiration of what I can do if I stick to it. I am going to keep an eye out for a pretty blanket so I can give it a shot.
I am so impressed with your sewing skills! That turned out beautifully and one of a kind so that you won't see yourself coming and going!! I am a "sewer" wanna-be and how you accomplished this step by step, gave me encouragement to want to be better and to try without fear of messing it up. Thank you for your inspiration to this wanna-be "sewer" lady!! Loved your excitement when things went exactly as planned and might I add, your little Marla is beautiful!!!
Perhaps releasing the dart at the back would have also given you more maneuvering room. Really fun project.
But did you get to make one for Marla?! She’s so precious! The kitty is a sweetie, too!
Thanks for inspiring us!
Marla's Madeline Hat is soooo adorable. ❤️
That jacket is slamming!!! It looks so much better than the inspo!! Love love love💕💕
Hi Wendy
New subscriber here.
If you want to reduce bulk when sewing quilt jackets, you can cut the batting on the inside a bit smaller. That way you only have two layers of fabric that needs to be sewed together. It really makes for a nice seam.
Thank you for this video. I really enjoyed it.
Soooo gorgeous!! Been looking for a beautiful quilt to make a jacket, but haven’t seen any that I’ve liked. You found a great quilt and the coat is so gorgeous!!!😍😍😍
Omg Wendy!!! 😭 I haven’t been by in a while because I’m a dirty hobby hopper and haven’t been sewing. Marla is SO. CUTE!!!! That’s my mom’s name! 😭❤️❤️❤️
I think this is my frav blanket coat you have made! Looks so good! Really flattering on you too! Beautiful! Also your little girl is growing up so fast I can’t believe it! She’s so cute too xx
I LOVE your rendition of quilt coat sleeves! Never thought to have them that way but I am in love- what a relaxing video, thankyou so much for the inspiration!!!
You did a BEUTIFUL JOB on this coat. BRAVO!!!!!
I love that the buttons hide in the jacket! it's so CUTE
7:33-7:46: Thank you for including such helpful details. As a newcomer, now entering my second month of owning and working with a sewing machine, I realize it's often assumed that we understand this information. While I can recognize darts when I see them in a garment, I'm not quite familiar with what they are or how they contribute to creating a tailored piece.
Beautiful coat . Extremely fashionable. Great coat & extreme fashionable
Oh god bless Marla! Thank you for her cameo!
love seeng you say "I did that!!" I do the same thing when I sew and it's such a special experience!!!
Your hair is so cute!!! I just love your voice and your tutorials are so soothing to watch and I learn so much! I love your videos! Ps I hope you and Marla are doing well!!! 😊
Oh my heart! Marla is just so precious ❤
You have taken away my fear in making a coat. I made two so far, I still need to improve the instillation yet I am on. My way to greatness. Thank you.
It's the first time I watch your channel, you are so beautiful and I felt happy just watching you, the jacket is more than amazing
I hope you have a wonderful day ❤❤
I'm in loooooove. The quilt, the pattern, that balloon sleeve AHHHH. I swear I don't have the time for a hobby as technical as this but you make it look so freaking good!
Off-topic from your fab new coat, but omg your engagement/wedding ring/s are gorgeous! Where are they from and I'd love to see them more closeup. 😍
