Welcome to Dr. Matthew Boes’s Rotator Cuff Repair Rehabilitation video series. This video is designed to help maximize your recovery following rotator cuff repair/surgery. The goal of our Phase 2 program for rotator cuff rehabilitation is to regain full motion of the shoulder in all directions. Remember the following as you engage in Phase 2 rotator cuff exercises:
Engage in no motion behind the back for 8 weeks following surgery
Normal shoulder motion is okay - no hiking the shoulders up to the neck
For exercises, start with table slides, progress to pulleys or stick exercises, and finally engage in active motion (moving the arm on its own)
Work to regain full motion by the end of Phase 2; engage in STRETCHING exercises at 10 weeks following surgery if you feel deficient (stretching exercises should be conducted 3-4 times per day)
Isometrics are okay to start at 10 weeks following surgery
Equipment needed may include a stick or cane, pulley, resistance bands and light dumbbells
The following rotator cuff active motion and gentle stretching exercises, which are demonstrated in this video, should be conducted during phase 2 of your rotator cuff rehab:
table slides - elevation
table slides - abduction
PULLEYS - FORWARD ELEVATION
PULLEYS - ABDUCTION
UPRIGHT STICK ELEVATION
UPRIGHT STICK ABDUCTION
UPRIGHT STICK EXTERNAL ROTATION @ 0 DEG
UPRIGHT STICK INTERNAL ROTATION BEHIND BACK
No moneyS
table top protraction
table top retraction
wall protraction & retraction
wall thumbtack exercise - upward & downward rotation
NOTE: At 10 weeks following surgery, if motion is deficient and shoulder is stiff, start the following stretching exercises. However, these are not to be done before 10 weeks post-op.
StretchING - external roTATION @ waist level
STRETCHING - eXternal rotation @ shoulder level
sTRETCHING - external rotation above shoulder level
sTRETCHING - Internal rotation WITH stick
sTRETCHING - Internal rotation WITH towel
NOTE: At 10 weeks following surgery, if motion is good and the shoulder is comfortable, start the following light strengthening exercises. However, these are not to be done before 10 weeks post-op.
Isometric - forward elevation
Isometric - abduction
Isometric - external rotation
Icing is very important after each therapy session, so be sure to place an ice pack or cooling pad on the affected shoulder for 10 minutes to help limit any irritation from exercise. If the affected joint is stiff, try using moist heat for 10 minutes prior to exercise to help loosen things up.
This video should not be used as a substitute for regular physical therapy visits and guidance from your physician. Only progress from one phase to the next based on recommendation from your physician. Most therapy regimens, particularly after rotator cuff repair, are based on a healing timeline. Progressing too quickly, even though it may feel okay at first, may put you at risk for injury. Regular physical therapy visits are valuable for giving you feedback on your progress and helping to ensure you are doing exercises properly. If you develop any questions or concerns regarding your condition while using this video, contact your physician. Best of luck in your recovery from your rotator cuff repair.

30 days into my rehab after rotator cuff and bicep tenodesis surgery. Working through some of these exercises at PT now. Some good ones here. The shoulder is an amazing piece of equipment we humans possess. I’ll never take it for granted again.
Agreed. I never appreciated how important the shoulders were. After tearing that cuff...wooo...
Thank you for helping me out with these videos. Helps me to understand how to do the exercises correctly. Great job!
10 weeks after rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder. Although a lot of pain, especially after therapy, I use these exercises as supplements to what I have been doing. Thanks so very much Doctor.
Very nice training program! Can you also explain/ write witch mussels are working directly? Thank you a lot ! ❤
This exercises are great. Since I started these at home this week I can already tell a difference. I am 8 weeks post op. Partial tear with bone removal
Got a few new exercises to perform with patients, thanks!!
Great exercises!! Thanks!
Hello. ..Video is very helpful 👍👍 .Would you pls share the link to buy pulley for forward elevation exercise ??
Maybe I missed it, but when do you start these exercises? Week 4, 8, 10?
Hi how many reps/sets per exercise?
Can these exercises be done right away, after surgery. I just had rotator cuff surgery about two weeks now.
I'm a bit frustrated at my pt. He STARTED me on later phases which are causing me severe pain to the point I'm in tears even after taking a pain pill & icing it. I'm about to stop & use these videos instead!!
I'm doing mine myself at home with help from these videos
Do it at home and then look up amino acids n stem cells to help speed it up
@@animeboy429 thank you
@@brookelyn1220 look at Serrapeptase. It's anti-inflammatory and helps after surgery.
Can u plz also mention which muscles are acting in particular exercise . thanks

After reviewing exercise video on rotator cuff surgery I couldn't find a series that give a week to week of what exercises you should be doing, I understand that each person have different limitation.
true , i am 1 month post surgery. because of corona virus i am unable to go to hospital. and i dont know what exercises to do.
@@youtubebrowser1730 bro i am same satuation
@@ParmodKumar-sp8dc did u had surgery
i am in my 7th week of surgery, i haven't done any exercise but i can do my daily work even bathing etc. i can sleep backwards now(it was a great relief). after 6 weeks things changed. i could feel ligament attached to bone, i did not feel stiffness in my shoulder. i am feeling energetic. but i am unable to lift my hand above shoulder. i am sure that after doing small passive exercises i will be able to treat my shoulder. if u have any doubts ping me.

How many weeks before starting phase 2??
My opinion is 8 weeks after surgery
Im 3 weeks after surgery but my surgery wasnt full rotator cuff, so I’m ready for these exercises. I had full rotator cuff surgery in 2005, so 8 weeks after surgery would be a good time to start Phase 2.
These are really good videos ❤️
Great now use someone that’s actually just had RC surgery
5:31 isn't that concentric and eccentric muscle action which could place dangerous level of stresses on the repair?
I felt the same, I skipped that exercise.
its been 2 weeks for me should i not be doing these yet
no. too early
I’m also 2 weeks & doing limited movements in PT. I want to do more. Especially over head. Frustrating.
@@goldilocksfhh9670 what about now ? Is it better ?
@@IoannisThessaloniki I’ll say yes because my dr said ‘aggressive’ PT. I’m just now starting wall walking.
@@goldilocksfhh9670 i scheduled my operation 28/4 , i have partial tear , i just wonder if my hand even after one year be the same . I already ordered resistant bands
Damn I did 8 weeks of therapy and 1/2 of these exercises weren’t used.
So how many weeks is phase 2? I’m only 1 month post op🤷🏽♀️
@@MRSBLACKBARBIE1981 I’m not sure. Have you started physical therapy?
I agree, I am almost 10 weeks and never saw any of this except the cane over my head, icing and the roll forward on the table, honestly Im here because I feel like the PT is stretching it out to get all the insurance money they can.
@@MRSBLACKBARBIE1981 About 8 weeks, for 4 weeks I would see the Phase 1 of this series.
@@christina9089 well they actually released me from PT and I felt like I didn’t get enough.
My shoulders surgery on 15 feb i need perfect physio so pls to recommend me on my email if possible
