Bro love that gates ! But the thing I like is the two board stringers! I built my gate with the hi low 2x4s and had no issues with my pickets. Love the look also.

Just looking for something simple easy that I can do wow you’re amazing thank you so much for a super simple video that the average person with simple carpentry skills can take into their own hands and build a gate and this is coming from a tree guy who smashes a lot of them LOL just kidding about the smashing.
I do very similar, aside from half-lap all the way around the frame... Keeps it from sagging years out 💪

The power pro screws from hillman do not require pre drilling.
Being that cedar eats away at anything but stainless, you should be using stainless screws for the project or if you decide to use nails, stainless nails.

You didn't mention that you should make sure the diagonals are equal. Then you will know you have a perfect square before you put your braces on. Otherwise it would be easy to end up with a parallelogram out of square by a small amount.
Also, the first brace running diagonally from the bottom of the hinge side achieves it strength because it is under compression. However, the SECOND brace is under tension and those joints are not strong under tension. It would be better to replace it with a steel cable adjustable with a turnbuckle. This is strong under tension and is good for fine tuning any small sag, which may be inevitable over time.

I think there was a reason they built the original fence behind the eletric meter line.
So when the meter guy or girl comes by to check they don't have to ask for access, etc.
Would be good to check your diagonal measurements for square before tracing the cuts on the cross members.
Half lap on the corners plus exterior screws and waterproof glue and it will never sag and for wide Gates 3 foot deep holes depending on the zone you’re in

I did this, but I laid the 2x4 on the the flat face and used bridle joints to keep it from sagging.
Like the tip about pouring concrete mix into the hole. However, I'd be very apprehensive about screwing through siding
That's just for concrete made for that method.

Yeh I’m a 20 year fencer, I never ran a 2x4 any direction but on edge for it will bow running them flat pretty risky in a gate scenario

No caulking between the wood and the siding with screws going thru it no good. And dry setting post sounds great and easy but let me tell you all the post Iv removed you can tell they were dry set with concrete. Water does not penetrate all the way thru. The middle stays just as dusty as it was in the bag

You need to use exterior grade wood glue or construction adhesive along with stainless or coated screws. Glue it and screw it.... Much stronger.

hind sight I know, but why not a half lap on the cross braces using to solid 8 ft pieces. Much more sturdy. Glue (tight bond 3) and screws.
Take an overall measurement of the opening. Then subtract 1 inch for youre latch . Then split it in 2 . There's youre measurement for each gate. Looks like you 4got that step. Good job though for youre first time 👏 👍 👌
Instead of but joints simple lap joints glued and fastend looks clean and stronger
FYI what you state about the diagonal suppost post is incorrect. For the diagonal support, you want it to attach on the bottom of the post side and top of the open side. This takes the vertical forces on the gat and transfers them to the post putting the diagonal in compression.
Roughly how heavy do you think this gate is by the way? I'm looking for a lightweight gate to hang from hollow brick pillars so the lighter the better

Cedar lasts just as long as treated and untreated pine. Sure it smells better. All will turn gray in a year'ish. Neighbor had a fence company erect a total cedar fence 4 years ago. They are having picket boards come off and 2x4 horizontals fail already. He comes over to ask to get into my yard to fix his fence.

Not sure about the OP.... but I bought my first house 5 years ago... the meter is in the back of my house behind a fence. I grew up in a small town and remember when the meter reader would come by to check the meter. So I wondered a bit why I have never once seen a meter reader or heard one thing from the electric company. I have security cams set up too and never saw anyone back there at all. Finally realized that the new meters they use these days can transmit the data wirelessly and the meters readers can collect data on many homes at once just by driving around a neighborhood. I don't know all the details exactly on how it works, but the point is that its highly unlikely anyone will need to take a look at the meter unless something seems way off.

Can i build a set up like this but with a one panel gate. Dimensions 10 w x 6 h. I will build a similar box. Then use (5) 2x4 studs on the inside of the box, behind x bracing. 5 heavy gauge inside swing hinges on the studs, and a rubber wheel on the opposing latch side to hold gate level and allow easy swinging. It will be operating on concrete.

Would be a lot stronger and less saggy if you had used half laps and a header. I know a header would likely be in the way for your trailer, but without making a larger triangle or adding a header to support that weight it's gonna sag.

Nice video. I have a question. At ~2:05 you said you wanted the single reinforcement piece to run from the Post side at the top. When I saw your gates up, before you put tacked on the cedar facings, it was the double reinforcements that were on the post side at the top. So....does it matter or did you put the left gate on the right and right gate on the left?
You want the bottom end of the brace on the hinge side, the opposite is not doing anything mechanically. He said it backwards but installed correctly
Personally I would use the brace going from the top of the hinge side to the bottom of the gate, my reason being it’s pulling the gate up not pushing the gate up. If it’s pulling gate up there’s less chance of the gate and the brace warping in the sun. It accomplishes the same thing either way, but only because the material is ridged if you were using a wire brace you could only go from the top hinge to the bottom corner

Your gates looked good but didn't close very good at the end. good effort though. I found but joints to not work well, I use half lap joints with good glue and four screws in a square pattern as well as cross supports. I've never tried the cable with a turn buckle that others are mentioning but that sounds like a fantastic idea. going to add them to my gates.
No, cable with turnbuckle just causes the gate to twist, i have tried it, doesnt work

Posts aren’t big enough we use 6x6 posts for all of our gates his gate won’t sag but post will bend under the weight it’s called gravity
Do not put gravel at the bottom of the post hole for drainage! It is not an area you want to attract or pool water in! Instead tar the ends of your posts prior, to prevent water from wicking up like wax in a candle flame. Put the posts into wet cement holes in the ground. Also depending where you live pay attention to the frost line because that factor where you live may tell you how deep to set your posts. Pros are using 'Blueskin' on the bottoms of posts to avoid messy tar these days.
Never heard of tarring the butt of the post, but then again I've never worked fencing. Good tips.
Also, I use adjustable turnbuckles instead of cross bracing. Infinite adjustably over time.
Or just paint on a couple coats of used engine oil. They will be solid for decades.
You dont need any of that , they are treated. That's it. Dont complicate things. I hate when I do a fence and I do work for people who think they know everything. I'm a fence only pro and have my business in Houston . Fence only, no roof or remodeling. Strictly fencing
I disagree. If the post shrinks, or absorbs water, it's going to go down to the bottom, and the just sit there softening the post. 4 to 6 inches of 3/4 inch gravel tamped, then the post, then the pre-mixed concrete with a slope up around the post so it drains away when it rains. I have seen so many redwood and pressure treated 4 x 4's rot away from the bottom up because they had accumulate moisture trapped in the cement, or because the post had direct contact with the dirt.

Use PL Premium Glue on all your fence joints including the fence boards to eliminate any sag in the fence. Limestone crush gravel works well for setting in post. Remember, fence posts rot off at ground level so bring your cement higher than your dirt.
Thanks for the tip, just put mine in and PL made it rock solid. I usually have to use cross tension cables to get it that strong.
How do you determine the size of the frame? For example, if both of my gates are to be 6ft, how big of a frame do I make?
Base your gate frame size off the dimensions of the opening between gate posts. For a single gate, I build frame 1.5" smaller than the opening so that each side there is a .75" gap between gate and posts. I do this to make sure gate does not get stuck from wood swelling due to moisture content changes, ( down where I live we get heavy seasonal rains). .75" is my preference, but you can probably get away with the thickness of the pin in the hinge, which is around a half inch. For a double gate, I build both frames so that together, they are 2.25” smaller than opening. ( Each gate hinge side has .75" opening, and in the middle, both gates are .375” from center line. My $.02
I was always taught the reinforcing cross member went from the post side lower area to the opposite upper part. It transfers the load from the upper swing side down towards the lower hinge. Which in turn is supposed to help with sagging.
