Trilok Gurtu : leçon de tablas à la Fnac Montparnasse

A l'occasion du Festival Jazz à Saint-Germain-Des-Prés, Trilok Gurtu était en showcase à la Fnac Montparnasse pour présenter son dernier album "Spellbound ".
Musicien cosmopolite, artisan d'une fusion qui emprunte ses couleurs à plusieurs continents, le grand maître indien de la percussion Trilok Gurtu est l'un des principaux passeurs entre le jazz et la musique indienne, ayant apporté une couleur authentique à de nombreux jazzmen en quête de nouveaux horizons. Son sens inné du rythme, son jeu fougueux et envoûtant lui ont permis de collaborer avec les plus grands noms (Don Cherry, John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek, Joe Zawinul, Oumou Sangaré...). Dans son nouvel album "Spellbound", Trilok Gurtu met la trompette à l'honneur et adapte le répertoire de Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis ou Don Cherry au métissage de la musique indienne.
En partenariat avec le Festival Jazz à Saint-Germain-Des-Prés Paris.

Interesting but funny, because I'm a brazillian musician and couldn't find anything at all that reminded me of samba, forró or maracatu in the examples that Trilok showed. :-) Despite of this, he is still a great musician. Just let me state: this is not SAMBA, FORRÓ or MARACATU in anyway! Hahahahaha…

Sorry if I offended you in anyway. I don't think any culture, country or it's people is the owner or creator of any style of music. I just meant that if anyone played those patterns to a brazilian person, whether a common guy who never studied music on life or someone like me who gives music classes since 1981, plays on gigs since 1990 and is graduated and post-gradueated on music composition, he would probably love it but would never recognize it as samba, forró or maracatu rhythm patterns...

I think the point Trilok was making is that all rhythm is connected and different cultures utilize very similar rhythmic components, but played in a different "style".

Sure, it´s what I thought of his speech. But what I'm saying is that those examples have nothing to do with samba, forró or maracatu AT ALL. It´s like he had called it waltz, polka and rock n' roll, for instance, and it wouldn´t have anything to do with those rhythms... But let me be clear: He is a great musician and I like him a lot!
