It’s this performance right here that made me a huge fan of Trilok Gurtu! His unorthodox playing and percussion/Trap setup is amazing! Trilok is a true master of the art of drumming! Certified genius!

Gurtu is a one-man orchestra. He's the full package. Someone who's able to make actual music out of percussion. He says his main roots come from India and Africa, which is unquestionable but I'd say his style is universal. Way beyond any label.

He has a modified bass drum pedal under the bottom of a custom conga/floor tom. You can see it at 5:00, just above the bottom right corner. He was in Seattle on the Bad Habits tour, in 95, and I was fortunate to be at the front of the stage, just feet from him for the entire set. A true master, and a genuinely nice fellow. I wish he would visit the states more often.

$*((!(2938*#=283292!!!! My sweet lord, Trilok Gurtu grooves in the spaces that most drummers forget to leave open. He is a force of nature, and he flows just like water.

I could list the most game changing players of all time in my palms and Trilok
is one. He is THE EAST MEETS WEST the fusion and the unorthodoxial approach
to kit playing. The palm is where the feel begins the stick is a mere extension.
I wish I would of been a percussionist before approaching the kit

He is definitely one of the best I have ever heard. I saw him live in a small club in the nineties on his Crazy Saints tour, and he floored the audience on that night. I like his performances with McLaughlin the most out of his performances.

Trilok started it all in the mid seventies he civilized the ear of a drummer
one of the greatest perhaps the greatest feel drummer. A true composer of the random walk
theory. Weckl and Gadd has borrowed so much from Trilok its unreal.

I love how his "kick" drums are actually a few de-tuned Toms that he hits with the sticks. Wouldn't it be great to see him playing with a metal band? Hitting the double kicks with his hands? That would be cool.

It's not scatting, it's konnakol counting and phrasing. It's an Indian thing.

Mother f*ck me batman, that was awesome!!!! Would watch his clip on a Zildjian promo VHS tape that was narrated by Jonathan Mover with a bunch of other Vinnie, Dennis, Calhoun, Keith LeBlanc
clips, but this one always fascinated and killed me. After like close to 30 years later when i was a sophomore in hs and got said promo tape with my first 8" A Splash I have finally seen the whole performance! Wish i had seen it earlier but I'll take it!!!
So funky, so fusiony, so F*cking rediculously awesome! Trilok has always been something else!!! We need more of him!!!!

It is a 12" drum head in a board on his right side, currently he has been actually using a kick but believe it or not there is no kick here in this video or on this set. Take a look if you can see it here there are no bottom heads either and the shell is about an inch deep on the toms or whatever you want to call these things.

what kind of drum does he's using as a bass drum???? There's no tom that could reach that bass drum kind of deep sound.... anyone knows??? anyone can help me... I'm trying to build the same set in my apartment so....;)

    • @tuknchuk
      @tuknchuk 2 дні тому

Did you ever get it built ? You left this comment 12yrs ago. 😂 When I saw him a few times in the early 90’s his kick which I think is the same one used here is literally just rims & heads with a bearing edge or some kinda ring sticking up above a hole in a wooden board. You can see his Toms more clearly here. The kick is the same, just separate and slightly bigger. The heads are just very detuned/flappy. He told me that the sound comes almost entirely from electronics / EQ. He said that without the PA, etc the drums wouldn’t sound the same or very good at all. He said someone built them for him from his idea. But that it was basically similar to a roto tom. Meaning just a head mounted over a rim of some kind and the board was there just to have something to screw the lugs into and hold the toms together. A lot of his sound comes from him starting with a mic /sound system and then adjusting his tuning / drumming / and vocal sounds to get the sound he wanted out of the PA. I asked him what kind of tube he was blowing through to get that amazing sound. I thought it must have been some special creation. He laughed and said “just a tube” he made the same sound with his mouth without the tube. It sounded so silly. He would pull the tube back and forth to his mouth and then away again. When the tube touched his lips its sounded like sounds from another world or Hell or something… without the tube it was laughable. He gave me that look like you dummies never take the time to try stuff and just figure it out. Like… get the sound that you want clearly in your mind 1st and then don’t stop until you hear/get it. He’s revolutionary… but mainly bc his creativity starts at the most fundamental level and we’re all standing around without a clue. It’s impossible to explain how much I love his playing. ❤
