Sheeana controls them with the pheromones that leto created trough selective breeding of his fish speakers. Her dance is an evolved version of siaynoq, the ritual Leto performed for them.
Frank Herbert must’ve been a real life Mentat to come up with all this.
This book loves restaurants
I loved the part where Odrade finds the melange at Sietch Tabr. Leto II was such a cool character.
I reread those sections as it seemed like a a random thing to be added to the flow of the plots. Taking that whole scene out changes nothing about the rest of the book's storylines. Maybe in Chapterhouse it becomes more significant (I just started reading that).
A REVEREND MOTHER WILL READ MY WORDS
I enjoyed Heretics a lot. The character development was definitely a step up. The universe feels so much bigger now. Loved reading about Gammu, it gave me the feeling of exploring Arrakis from the original book.
The Gammu part is my favorite, especially with the addition of newcomers from the scattering. The latter half of the book more relatable, "groundcars" that look like limousines, restaurants, office buildings, bars. It may sound odd, but the rest of the series is devoid of these common locations.
I feel Bene Gesserit is kind of villainous in the 1st trilogy, especially considering the role the reverend mother Mohiam had played. Leto II also accused Bene Gesserit did not do what must be done so he had to bear the agony of thousand years to lead humans into the "golden path". The last 2 books definitely redeemed the sisterhood.
Miles Teg is a brilliant character. I loved when gains his new powers at the end. So epic and I totally visualised him taking everyone down. I couldn’t help but have the track ‘Phat Planet’ by Leftfield in my head when reading this part.
Actually true. Got a difficult time reading 'Heretics' as well. For one thing, there were too many introductions of new characters that were not from the original Dune other than the new Duncan ghola. Even he was still a kid.
And too many plots taking place. Namely in Gammu with Lucilla, Teg and Duncan. Also with Schwangyu. And on Rakis with Ordrade, Sheeana and Tueh.
At time, if not most of it, I was lost.
I'm pretty sure Odrade should be pronounced as O-drae-dee, cuz its stated to be a later form of the name Atreides.
Towards the end, it feels like a couple chapters are just missing. I had to check that my copy wasn't simply incomplete.
It's like Luke holding a speech, about to capture the death star and in the next scene, he's already in control of the thing, arriving at tatooine.
Overall a nice book though
I had this feeling too!! For such a long book the actual ending events feel skipped over.
When Tegs at the bar gathering everybody and the next chapter they’re already landing in Rakis with the Ghola
@@MyHyuugayeah they dragged everyone being on the run out and made them meet So many side characters we never saw again bit when the action was about to take place they rushed it in 2 chapters to finish it up
I got this feel particulary on the scene where Teg was about to hijack a no-ship and all of a sudden they are already on Rakis, i believe it was around this time that herberts wife died, so i assume that was a big factor for the rushed scenes, and also, the last line of the book "there was no answer, but then again, she wasn't expecting an answer" reads to me a lot like a devastated man asking for a reason for his tragedy but getting none cuz there is none
Brooooo 3 mins into this video I feel the EXACT same way I ran thru the first 4 books rather fast after watching the movie and now I felt drained after god emperor and not so motivated starting this book because I felt it was also confusing mainly because the new characters that I can’t put a face too, I’m at about page 150 on heretic for the past week lol but I’m determined to finish the chapter house before I read something else, mind you guys I just started reading heavy again after watching dune it really sparked my interest to read, next for me on the list is The expanse, wheel of time and foundation lol
I too am finding motivation in this video. I have read the first Dune book several times over the last two decades but somehow never got around to reading the rest till this year. God Emperor did seem like a good point to stop for a breather. (After reading Urth of the New Sun by Gene Wolfe for the first time instead I now know I don't know the defintion of the phrase "catch my breath").
Just started Heretics again.
Hope you enjoy the Foundation Series, It's like kissing cousins with Dune. Same core Dilemma but in a different universe with different principles.
Wheel of Time is great!@@danielrafferty4108
Odrade and the future path of the sisterhood with mankind's survival are my favorite aspect of all Dune books. I loved Heretics, Chapterhouse and Odrade.
Completely agree that it was hard to go from God Emperor to Heretics…
My understanding of the Bene Gesserit vs Honored Matres comes down to two things: numbers and specialization. The HM are a much larger force and easily outnumber the BG. As for their talents, one on one a Reverend Mother can definitely take down an Honored Matre. However, the Honored Matre have a much more direct use of control over the populations they rule through their use of sexual manipulation, while the Bene Gesserit rely on subtler employments of control via the Missionaria Protectiva. It would take dozens, if not hundreds of years for the BG to infiltrate a planet and take control of its religion for their purposes, but the HM could likely take control in months or years. They have focused their energies on developing one very, very powerful tactic, compared the the BG who have a wider range of talents
This one sets up for chapter house which I am halfway through now. Excellent series! 😊
I wasn’t in a rush to get into this one too! Thanks for posting this
I just finished this and I agree 100% on the slow start lol. I was the same way and had to re read because I put the book down but this has become one of my favorites of all time.
The characters in Heretics and probably many others humans, have benefited from 3,500 years of God Emperor rule. Some are invisible to prescience. Ixian ships can now fold space with no melange needed ending the Guild's monopoly. Some gholas can remember all their previous lives and memories. All humans are physically faster. The Honored Matres have perfected sexual addiction and slavery. Teg achieves super mentat status along with physical abilities. Sheeana can communicate with the worms and it's possible it can be taught. Etc. These are all things that Leto II put into motion as part of his Golden Path to ensure humanity's survival.
Heretics and Chapterhouse are underrated gems. They focus on the Bene Gesserit, who are much more interesting than the Atreides.
I just finished Heretics, and so far I think its the best in the series, other than maybe the first book
Yes bro yes
Everybody was saying heretics was one of the worse books.
In my opinion, it was the best one.
Still need to read chapterhouse though.
I just finished heretics. Almost halfway through chapterhouse, I gotta say I much prefer books 1, 3, and 4.
Great review, thanks.
Thanks for watching!
I loved this book ! It adds dimension and understanding to the Golden path .I found The God Emperor 's plan brilliant and compassionate as it pulled the other stories into a clearer focus
I just finished god emperor of dune and have loved the series so far. Heretics I was hesitant to pick up so soon, but this video definitely cemented my resolve to finish the Frank books.
I was surprised that I liked Heretics of Dune almost as much as Children of Dune (Dune being my favorite). BTW, I consider Dune Messiah and Children of Dune as one novel (just as the TV mini-series did). Thanks for posting your thoughts!
Thank you for watching!
Well those 2 combined would be the best dune book of the bunch.
supposedly the first three books were supposed to be one, but due to their lengths they were split up.
@@cmiller9800 not true. The first book was supposed to be 3 books, but somebody told him to make it one
How you fealt about the honored matres is common id say. They do feel proped up but weak. I felt the same about the sardaukar im the first book, propped up to be this big threat but constantly getting their asses handed to them. But after a second read things become more clear. Small details that get missed give more context and both of these factions become more thretening.
Great points. Thanks for watching!
Good vid, new sub.
Thanks for the support!
I really enjoyed this book, different but definitely Dune
I really felt like Sheanna's plotline fell flat. Was her only purpose to get Shaitan off of Dune? and if so, how boring, because that goes almost nowhere in Chapterhouse.
Goes almost nowhere? She is set up to be a new God Emperor by the sisterhood, not to mention the worm progeny grown on chapterhouse to seed the universe with more spice planets. Only her escape with Duncan enables her to escape the God-trap.
If the "e" at the end of Odrade was sounded out it would sound like "O-dray-dee" ... "A-treya-dees" ..
Tegs powers reminded me more of force speed from starwars. Great review buddy
Guess where they got the ideea.
very good videos
Thanks for watching!
The thing that people fail to notice, I find, with the dune series is how medieval it is. It is quite noticeable with how polarizing Messiah is to many. People are too drawn into the obvious... These books are far more fantasy than they are science fiction. Imagine, the courts of England, France and that of eastern Europe ... but with the back drop of this 'space opera'... and perhaps a different grasp of what Frank may have been going for can be reached.
Definitely the book I liked least of the series.
As you get at, the beginning is slow and for the first two thirds or three quarters I was at a loss wondering what the point of any of it was, but the end easily made up for it.
p.s. Mind you, it's been so long since I read it all I have left are impressions, so can't give many details.
Great
Love this series of videos.
Just an aside, Odrade is pronounced like - Oo-draw-day - similar to Atreides, since she's related.
Odrade is pronounced oh dray dee, 3 syllables, like Atreides uh tray Deez, from which Herbert describes the name is derived. Jeez, ma trays? May ters is correct.
I wonder if it will ever get made into a film or tv show.
What's a "No ship"?
Basically an invisible starship.
@@RonReviews2
Ok. Thanks.
Its also invisible to prescience
I have yet read Chapterhouse:Dune, the final book that Frank Herbert wrote, I'm bit worried continuing and concluding the series by reading Hunters of Dune and Sandworms of Dune both written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson because I have heard many negative things and often times called "fan-fiction"
I have read some of kevin J Anderson books that he wrote in Star wars Legends (before disney bought and ruin it) his books were often mediocre or bad especially comparing to other great star wars legends books like Timothy zahn, matthew stover and James Luceno. But I'll see when I finish Chapterhouse Dune.
My suggestion is read Chapterhouse, it's pretty good. The sequels by Brian and Kevin aren't that bad (they're mediocre as you mentioned) but they're not amazing. They have a lot of overlap with their sequels (The Butlarian Jihad, Machine Crusade, Battle of Corrin) but are okay.
as an edit: "They have a lot of overlap with their prequels"
Great review
I read Dune though I skipped over a lot, having seen 3 dune films n soon 4 kinda spoiled it
God emperor is next for me
Thanks for watching! Hope you like God Emperor.
@@RonReviews2 thank you sir
Thanks for the review. I hardly disagree about humor in Dune. To me, Herbert had a really wicked sense of humor and the sick burns eg God Emperor Leto dishes out are just hilarious. Heretics and Chapterhouse amped up the humor even more, I felt. Every time a Bene Gesserit and an Honored Matre come together... it's just one slap after the other. It's surely a different flavour of humor, but it is there :)
Yeah, you’re right. I definitely noticed it in God Emperor. Thanks for watching!
(Spoilers)
The Sisterhood is not immoral. In fact, it is imminently moral, in an extensively calculated way. At times, the BG leadership may seem selectively a-moral in how it religiously exploits the Old Imperium's dominant human communities regarding humanity's religiously instructed perceptions and practices of procreation.
The Sisterhood is, at its core, culturally agnostic and philosophically atheist. It was during the reign of the God Emperor that the Sisterhood's descendants were indelibly imprinted with the GE's epiphany realization and species confirmation of Noble Purpose.
After the GE's death, the Sisterhood wholly adopted his Golden-Path program, allowing Siona's genetic gift to protect the vanguard of The Scattering, even to the point of also (SPOILER) protecting the No-ship from getting captured by D&M at the end of Chapterhouse.
You kept it spoiler free until you told me, DUNE DIED!!!!!!!!!! Thanks
The Honorded Matres were not under written at all. The Bene Geseret underestimated them at the start. They did not know exactly how the HM gained so much power so quickly. HM had developed most of the skills the BG possessed, They just happened to focus on taking immediate control through sexual enslavement.
PS, having any throwbacks to the original book is irrelevant. The Dune Saga moved forward at a breakneck speed. I love that the books had new characters and new settings.
