He wanted humanity to mature. By enforcing a millennia-long enforced peace and tranquillity amongst all humans, he made sure that they would never again wistfully look back on the "good old days" of a romanticised past under a benevolent charismatic leader

I'm glad the algorithm handed me this video, "God Emperor" is my favorite of the Dune books. It has so much poetry. The audiobook version is magnificent too (the entire series is good, but hearing Leto II be a dick is wonderful).

God Emperor blew my mind. It's tied with the first book as my favorite in the series, there's so much to unpack that I still discover new things even on many rereads

I had exactly the same experience! for some reason, I had to take a break from the book, somewhere in the middle. But I’m really glad that I persevered.

Great video. I’ve certainly never read a book quite like God Emperor of Dune. I can certainly understand how people who aren’t that interested in philosophy might find this very dense. For me personally I absolutely loved it. I keep going back and forth on whether God Emperor of Dune or DUNE is my personal favourite.

I finished this book the other night. I enjoyed it. There are a lot of questions that are raised as well as answers. It kept me asking myself how and what will the Golden Path look like and turn out. I too took a little break from it half way, not because I wasn’t enjoying it but because I wanted to give it my full attention. Even though I just finished it, there maybe some details I’ve forgotten due to the break I took. It was good to watch this vid as a recap of the first half of the book, as I paused for a bit around half way of the story.
I will definitely reread again and I’m sure I’ll see more key things that I probably missed first time round.
Though Leto II is the main character I kept going back and forth from thinking he knows what he’s doing and being the protagonist to not liking him. The book does a good job of this. Also how you yourself as a reader can question some of Leto’s decisions even though you know that in the end it’s all for a bigger purpose to save humanity. I think a lot of us can relate to the newest version of Duncan with his frustrations and questioning Leto.
The interactions that Leto had with each character in his citadel kept me on edge for the most part, especially the scenes with Moneo and Duncan. I agree with you, I found that scene with the previous Duncan funny when Leto was falling asleep. The attack on the Ixian embassy was epic.
The ending was great. So much so that I re read the last part again as soon as I finished it. The idea of Leto’s sand trout leaving his body with his consciousness living on through the sand worms I have read as a metaphor and almost like an inspiration for the human race to scatter across the universe and live on, which I think was pretty cool. I also liked the ‘golden smoke’ on the bridge being (another) metaphor for being almost like the official start of the golden path. I found Moneo’s experience during this time very interesting and unexpected as I would’ve thought we would’ve got into Leto’s, Duncan’s or Siona’s mind during this part. But it worked, Moneo is a key character particularly as he was loyal to Leto in fulfilling the golden path. His glimpse of it almost made it all worth it for Moneo even though seconds later he dies.
It was interesting to read this without any of the characters from the trilogy involved (apart from Leto II and ghouls Duncan). I also did love the moments when Leto would use the voices from his ancestors, particularly Maud’dib’s.
Looking forward to reading the other two now.

This is without a doubt one of the best works of SciFi ever. Let alone of it's series.
It was pivotal in my deconversion from theism. It's analysis of religion, it's creation and continued manipulation by humanity is a true eye opener. Particularly the conversations Leto has with Duncan and Sister Chenoweh.

Well you can forget about the worm, Herbert's next book is another thousand or two removed from this one, of the series God Emperor is the odd one out in that the pacing is slower and the musings of the worm dominate the book. Of the series I have read GE the most and I'm not sure why, I've always had an attraction to super beings, the more godlike the better, but here you can get into the head of one, it's fascinating although at times I thought GE were just the ravings of an egocentric author.

I want to say, you'll be well rewarded if you power through "Heretics". There are some wildly classic moments and beloved characters, and it gives the Sisterhood a real face that actually shows their evolution. There seems to be some intense philosophy where they are concerned. Also, Miles Teg Fan Club. I am a fan of the audiobooks so that may help give the whole story more life for you.

I'd say Heretics is the worst book in the series, but the end is worthwhile, even though everything that leads op to it is a gigantic slogs.
p.s. It inspired my favorite line from Y the Last Man: I haven't been this confused since I read Heretics of Dune.

Just to be clear, Leto 2 doesn't live for thousands of years becuase he merged with the Sand Trout, he does so because he utilizes the ability that all Bene Geserit have but choose not to use for worry that people would grow to hate them (a silly reason if you ask me).

@@elizabethjansen2684 Not really, it never states that fusing with a sandworm make you live for thousands of years in the book but it does say that those with Bene Geserit training can.

Pretty good review. About the only thing I'd point out is that Leto II chose to become a Tyrant to teach Humanity a lesson that they remembered, perhaps literally, in their bones. (humans being cloned from a single cell, then having their memories of their past life awakened is a reality in Dune) That lesson, in a nutshell, being "Seek Freedom, always and forever". And that he knew his downfall was not only inevitable it was crucial for the survival of Humanity as a species - which is why he allowed himself to fall into the trap he saw in front of him. (but did not FORESEE - he was as blind to the machinations as anyone else. he just knew it was a trap because he had an uncountable number of past lives to call on, and there are only so many different ways to launch a trap on a tyrant like Leto II.)
But those are minor quibbles, not major criticisms.

Leto does not want to save the universe from its own destruction, Leto wants to save humankind from the Ixian machines. If humankind is ruled by one person the machines will easily take him down and conquer the rest very fast but if they are scattered all over the universe and free - then it will be almost impossible to conquer each human planet. While the book talks only about the humankind but does not tell us much about the Ixian (how they grow and evolve) does not mean that Ixians are passively sitting, no, they wait to get rid of Leto and his control so they can take down humankind. There is a deeper mystery about Ixion's and there is a second perspective from their point of life that can be another separate book.
