- Oikawa's "Chance Ball" scene is one of Haikyuu's greatest, but it's just a small part of his incredible journey. As perhaps the most motivating character in the anime, his journey as an "Ordinary setter" to fight against Karasuno's Kageyama, and Aoba Johsai's Shiratorizawa is beyond inspiring.
From the first match of Aoba Johsai vs Karasuno, where his serves were near-unstoppable, we see Oikawa's drastic development before the season 2 rematch. He's a completely different player, with a whole new mindset that he picked up from his mentor Jose Blanco, he turns into an absolute monster.
He's completely overcome his past - which we see in the flashback he has to his middle school days, where he almost hit Kageyama out of anger.
And yet, in spite of all of that, he ends the second season, his time at high school, with no appearances at nationals. And yet when he finds Ushiwaka, he declares that his "Volleyball career isn't close to over yet".
(Spoilers in this paragraph) We see him in the background of the Karasuno vs Inaraizaki match, but we otherwise don't see him - until MUCH later on, post Haikyuu's timeskip - where he and Hinata meet in Brazil to play Beach Volleyball. Further down the line, Oikawa joins Argentina's national team under the leadership of Jose Blanco, where they then play Japan. The winner of that match is seemingly never revealed, but chapter 402.1 gives us the final answer - Oikawa beat everyone.

APOLOGIES FOR THE CUTS - PLEASE READ

This video was a masterpiece. It still is, but to be completely honest, yes the jump cuts do dampen the lustre.
Given that it’s a highly performing video for your channel and there would be effort to edit and upload a new version we totally understand if you don’t want to go down that route. Whatever you decide is ok.

Does the uncut version still exist somewhere? maybe you could upload it unlisted or smthn? Some of the cuts feel very abrupt, you could maybe download this video and fill in the parts you had to cut with different scenes

I like how there are no animals reprensting oikawa its like he's the only human in the world of monsters

I do think it’s interesting when people mention how a side character outshines a main character, especially in terms of Haikyuu because, at the end of the day, Oikawa and Hinata are very similar in their fears and anxieties and basically have the same arc; they just have different reasons for feeling the way they do. There is Oikawa who is working so hard in a sport he loves, while feeling like he can NEVER compete with and succeed against those who are just naturally GIFTED at the sport, and then there’s Hinata who was not able to participate in the sport he loved for years, feeling like he will NEVER be able to catch up to those who were GIFTED to be able to play the sport earlier than him.
Both of them have the same feeling of anxiety. Of just not being good enough, of feeling that this might be their limit, of never being able to catch up or keep from being overtaken. Both have that drive to want to keep getting stronger. Doing and saying rash things in moments of fear.
I think people do tend to lean towards Oikawa being more interesting and “better written” because we as an audience can his growth and fears in spurts. We get a lot of information in those moments. With Hinata, because he is the MC, his arc has to be taken from START to FINISH, in order to us to make that connection that he and Oikawa were not so different.

Furudate having Oikawa and Hinata go overseas in order to get better and to have them meet each other in a time where both of them were feeling down just shows how very similar their arcs are meant to be. And that writer wanted to seal the deal. The fact Hinata and Oikawa helped remind each other, during that week in the Brazil arc, how much they both loved volleyball and why they were taking this chance. Their eventual friendship, the connection that they have that no other character has, is just so important to the story and their characters ❤
And I hope to God that arc gets animated. And we can finally see how much Oikawa and Hinata relate to one another. Rather than just Oikawa. But that’s just me gushing overall.

I never realised until I sat down to make this video how similar the 2 are, and yeah I'm PRAYING it gets animated too because it's my favourite arc in manga lol
@@LessonsFromAnime tbh until the Brazil arc, I didn’t really make the connection. I had wanted them to interaction more outside of Kageyama ofc but it never occurred to me as to why lol. But the Brazil arc jumped in the top arcs for me, once I made that connection. In the end, that was accumulation of both of their arcs and them overcoming that last hump. The fact that both of them ending up proving themselves at the end is *chefs kiss* writing

Their efforts, chara development showed that they beat Seijoh because this time, they had the stronger team. So yeah, sorry but Furudate isn't lazy enough to create characters and stroryline for fans to say that Karasuno beat their opponent because of the plot. If they were, they would have had Karasuno beat Seijoh in season 1.

@kaziayon6507 in the last chapter, kuroo invited a lot of the significant characters for an all-star exhibition match. Oikawa was in the same team as both of them.

The best part is that, even if Team Japan loses to Argentina and Oikawa, it would make sense both narratively and realistically, since Hinata and Kageyama has nothing to lose by losing this match, they're just as strong as the International players and Oikawa, if not even better, and both teams feel like the protagonist and antagonist, if Japan wins, Japan gets their revenge while Oikawa fails his yet again, and if Argentina wins, Oikawa finally gets his revenge, Team Japan crumbles yet again to sheer height and power, and yet either one winning won't be proof of anything.
Argentina winning would mean Japan didn't lose because their best player (most likely the best) is from Japan, and Japan winning would mean they finally overcame that wall of height and strength, whilst beating one of their best players who's on the other team.
But after everything that has happened, I truly believe that Oikawa and Argentina really did win this final match of the story.

what so great about Oikawa's character is that he's no genius, he's no prodigy whatsoever who got stucked in a world full of genius monsters but still able to keep up and even excels them at some point. his willingness to learn, do the hard work and practice hard, everything we're also trying to do so that we're not left behind.
It’s also due to his understanding. He works with what he’s got and those with him aren’t focusing on life revolving around volleyball. I don’t think anybody else continues to pro volleyball.
You put him on his final team and it changes everything for him.

If he played with these monsters he wouldn’t have pushed himself as much as he did. Was probably a good thing long term to be on that weak team. Hr wasn’t a genius so he played without geniuses to show he could make it himself

I read this somewhere else but the original person but that if Oikawa went to Shiratorizawa, he'd just be another Semi for their team and I think about that a lot. Oikawa made the best decision to never go to Shiratorizawa
This essay resumes everything I love about Oikawa, he began as a character I really didnt like, until I get to know him better and what he represents.
He's vulnerable, overly critical of himself, insecure but he's also bold, he faces every challenge head on. And as inspiration for the readers, hard work can pay off. You don't know how long it will take but it's worth it.

But it was always about hard work. There isn't a single character in Haikyu who doesn't work hard. Oikawa's character development doesn't mean that hard work pays off (which has no sense, of course hard work pays off), it means that sometimes, to reach your goals, you may have to take another road.
All that buildups, all that setbacks, all that time and effort to the finals 10 seconds of the video is brilliant.
When analyzing Oikawa's view on the "monsters" it's interesting to compare the facial expression of Atsumu after he experiences Hinata's attack for the first time with Oikawas. Atsumu's expression is one of admiration and pure, childlike admiration, whereas Oikawa's is one of fear. This is really interesting and highly relevant in real life, as those who do well can isolate themselves from the world and its expectations and be completely engrossed in the game. Physical ability is one part of the multivariate equation of performance. Oikawa has the skill, but he symbolizes those who are held back by their mentality. His development, and something as simple as his expression change when watching greatness on the other side of the net, portrays the importance of distancing yourself from self-destructing thoughts.
The ending made my so emotional. I haven't read the manga but am familiar with what happens in general. But I didn't know the details, and knowing the Oikawa finally made it to the top himself brought me to tears.
I have been spoiled beyond belief since I was the one who was like “nice essay, I’m enthralled and I don’t think I’ll ever watch Haikyuu anyway so it’s all fine” but now that I’ve finished I have been convinced to watch Haikyuu. Very well done. From that 30 second intro and a knowledge of my own person, I knew I was gonna be down bad for Oikawa’s journey. How am I ever going to watch the series normally for the first time now!?

incredible video!!! i've been a fan of haikyuu for 9 years now and couldn't figure out why as an adult (vs a middle schooler) my favorite characters changed so much throughout the show. oikawa somehow became one of my favorites over the span of almost a decade, but i think this video clearly spells out the reason why adults connect to his story so deeply. it's a story about struggle, winning, losing, getting lost, finding the forgotten love for an old passion, making peace with the past and moving on to greater heights. it's the same path every person figuring out their way in life faces. haikyuu as a story guided me into life by giving me many beautiful life lessons, and yet oikawa's story is my favorite because it's the most relatable, and the most inspirational. thank you for this video
I love oikawa. He is also the reason i love michael kaiser from blue lock. Their epithets are similar. One is called "the great king " , the other is called "the god's chosen emperor".

Oh my, how I loved this, man. Not gonna lie, I love SO MANY characters in Haikyuu, but the sheer, unkillable intent of outperforming all his rivals and come out on top might set Oikawa as my number 1. And truthfully, I just love how this series made me think "I NEED to see Atsumu actually set for Hinata one day" and then "I ABSOLUTELY NEED to see Oikawa set for Hinata one day.
Maybe we're going to get some more special chapters along the way, for example, when the next movie comes out or on some anniversary. I think Furudate-sensei might be up for this. And of course, I hope he's going to cook something new in coming years - I love his storytelling.

there was some 10th anniversary tidbits that talked about characters in current time and in hinata’s it talks about how in the next Olympics he aims to win the gold medal which also straight up implies that Oikawa beat all their asses

I suddenly realized that, I'm in sympathy with Oikawa. Like, I've been to VB for a very long time and honestly, I feel bad about myself. This is because, eversince I was young, I've been to VB (I started VB when I was in my 4th grade). And everytime, I would always see myself as: lacking, weak, and that I need to always compete so that I may also be recognized. But little did I know that, I'm starting to look away from things that "I can do", but I always compare myself to what others "can do".
Honestly, this one is heartbraking yet liberating at the same time. This gave me a slap of realization. Because of this, I was able to finally internalize within myself that, not just in VB but also to life, that I too will have my own time. Time will come for me to able for me to fully shine and bring out the best in me.
In Filipino we say, "darating din ang panahon para sa akin".

Greatest youtube video I've ever watched in my entire life. Fuels me to try and keep going in my own sport despite my own failures. Not that Oikawa won but the fact that his story emphasizes that there really are 2 options: I can keep going for the dream and turn it into a reality or I can give up. I can't give up.
As someone who is studying in a conservatory and facing something similar to Oikawa, I learned that talent can only get you so far. If you don't practice or hone your skill you will fall off. I hope I get similar results as Oikawa one day.
At 17:20 I felt like you were talking directly to me. I dedicated my life to sport, realizing that I wanted to make it a professional career too late. Now at 26, I often feel like I'm finished, cooked and boiled. However what you say is correct: I DIDN'T hit the limit of my abilities. That's for sure.

This is an excellent analysis, thank you! Oikawa was my favourite for the first two seasons, and you make many great points about his character. Though to be fair, Haikyuu is chock-full of great characters; It's impossible to choose just one. There's much one can from Furudate sensei about writing.
Haikyuu is a masterpiece. My favourite manga/anime. I can't think of a story, in any medium, that packs so much inspiration, so many valuable lessons, in a frame so seemingly simple. I'll treasure it for as long as I live.

With my wife we have a head canon that goes: "Oikawa's pride made him swear he would NEVER set a ball for Ushiwaka", and so he basically renounced the japanese national team because he didn't want to be Ushijima's teammate, and as an argentinian, that's the kind of personality we love in our players so he is very welcomed in our team. I love the video and your insights :D

Ah, Oikawa. The character that everyone who knows me and watches Haikyuu immediately says is the most like me. We really are so similar, he and I. Except for the part where he tends to externalise his insecurities and frustrations and so take it out and blame others/circumstances (by no means do I mean this in a derogatory way). I tend to internalise and blame myself (horrible coping mechanism, went to therapy for it and all). We’re too alike for me to ever properly like him, but I appreciate him nonetheless, and I love love love it when people understand him, just like you did in this amazing video.

These themes hit really hard. As an illustrator, I love to gush over other people's works, but at the same time looking at them I often fall into the pit of "there are so many talented artists, look at this, how can I even compare, why should anyone pick me if I were to fully dedicate myself to this" etc.
It's a mixed feeling, sometimes it drives me to practice more, study their style and what they do, sometimes while studying them and seeing how hard it is to replicate their techniques, I find it frustrating, to the point of almost giving up.
It's not easy to accept your skills as what they are in the present, and it's even harder to think that you can improve to higher levels, reaching or even surpassing those you admire.
But if you don't try, you never will.

What i love about Oikawa, is that he continuously states he thought of quitting volleyball, yet something happens that reminds him of how fun it is.
the man is a genius in my eyes. Never saw him as an underdog. He has a gift despite him not noticing and works hard on top of that. It's kinda like basketball I guess or any other sport. Michael Jordan struggle a lot his first couple of years despite him scoring points left and right but at the end of the day it's all about perseverance.

Great video about Oikawa and his impact on the series! Not going to lie, when I first started watching Haikyu I started watching because of the character that Oikawa represented. Oikawa represents hard work, high expectations, never give up, and willpower; everyone that watches this series should love a respect a character like Oikawa. I found this series when I needed it most and your videos put into words the importance of the messages each character brings.

The second to last match we get to see is really about two players that weren’t born as prodigies or naturally gifted … and how they were allowed to stand on the court at the higher level with monsters playing the game they wanted to play

I was listening to this video as I’m swatching all my markers, writing their names, and organizing them.
I had them in numeric order, the last one being 180. I already did majority of them and watched this video to finish them up.
Im on my last little row towards the end of the video and it’s the last time he talks about Hinata right before he talks about oikawa-
and I swatch my last marker. It is orange. I look at the marker to write down its name and number and it says;
“180 Tangerine”
And I sit there, and I smile, and cry a bit as this video made me very emotional. Just- how perfect? Too good to be true infact. Idk what divine powers let that happen but,

One of the great things about sports is that unlike say the arts, how good you are at the moment is not subjective, or open to someone else’s interpretation. You will win, or you will lose, and the reality that you aren’t good enough, or may never be good enough is going to be clear. People don’t like to acknowledge the fact that sometimes you may not be good enough, especially in our “feel good about yourself no matter what” culture, but the inability to face the truth, which athletes have to do, is one of the reasons our society is so delusional and unhappy.

I truly am beating myself for not finding this channel previously. However I am so glad that I finally found it. To be honest I have seen Haikyuu three to four times, but I have never really thought about the character of Oikawa so much in depth. I am truly impressed how well you analyze the characters and put forward your views in a very simple and easy language.

i have been watching your haikyuu videos almost religiously for the past week or so and haikyuu is that one anime and manga that has tremendously changed my life. oikawa has been my favourite character and you got the characterization and was able to pick up and articulate so many things and i'm just so happy i got to see the masterpiece of this video. and also that you did go into the manga chapters because they are all so instrumental to his character!! looking forward to more haikyuu ones :"))

Oh man the goosebumps I got watching this.
I love haikyuu and in some way it saved me when I was battling Covid and was confined in a hospital breathing through a machine. It was Haikyuu telling me no matter how hard things are to just fight and get up.
Oikawa was a favorite of mine as well. The show really made it that you rooted for the enemy and wanted them to win even though you also wanted Karasuno to win. It was just that good that everyone had their own favorite.

Oikawa is such an underrated character if they were to ever make a spinoff or manga series based on one haikyuu character it would have to be oikawa for damn sure

Incredible, Oikawa is such a fantastic antagonist and him literally beating EVERYONE (all the monsters, everyone he was terrified of and some he didn’t get to play, but would've been terrified of if he did) is the perfect ending

Thanks for this analysis of Oikawa. I liked him from the start as I tend to enjoy arrogant antagonists a lot. This review shows just how much deeper Oikawa is. There are so many brilliant layers to his personality- especially his insecurities and his uphill struggle against many genius players.
One of my favorite guys. One of the most misunderstood in the series.
He’s an asshole but he’s not. He understand and works with his teammates. They aren’t genius’s and life doesn’t revovle around volleyball so he doesn’t make them change. He understands them weaknesses and all.
That’s why he loves hinata . They both had to give it their all to become pro.
If he played with geniuses he wouldn’t have gone pro. Hr wouldn’t have had to focus on improving his entire game to give him a chance. Which is why he also played on his team. He wanted to show normal people could hear the monsters. Nobody in his team if I remember went pro besides him
When he finally got good enough and reach his goals he was able to play to play on a team with monsters… and look where it got him
I don’t think he was misunderstood. The story fleshed him out very well.

He is an asshole. He's jealous, petty and covers up his insecurities by playing it cool in front of others. I tolerated him most in Hinata's Brazilian arc because he truly was tolerable, which he quickly destroyed with "I'll beat everyone", but in high school he was intolerable. The truth is if people met him in real life they wouldn't be so lovey dovey about him.

You have a great voice and this is probably my favorite Oikawa character analysis video.
I honestly don't comment on videos but I really felt the need to put this out here, while I may not have an experience of a competitive sport like volleyball I've always found myself feeling the same emotions and struggles Oikawa goes through in my own "sports". I always ended up comparing myself to others and constantly seeing my own faults and weaknesses and I found myself stuck in a rut because "why even try if my teammate will be better than I ever will?" even long after my time with the sport is over. But genuinely from the bottom of my heart thank you for making this video- I felt like it couldn't have existed for me at a better time than now when I needed it the most. I didn't know much of Haikyuu and the way you explained and portrayed your interpretations and thoughts was done so beautifully. I felt seen and even inspired to move forward with the mindset that even if I won't be the best at everything I could at least continue trying and working harder to grow. I'll be saving this video and probably rewatch it from time to time, please keep making videos and have a nice day!
