Thank you, more light needs to shine on this legend when we talk about the Greats. People eye the Monzon fight but that wasn’t even his weight class, he simply dared to be even greater than what he was.
I really appreciate the fact that you are coming back to your old style of video making. With more narrative and less fight films. Thank you for covering Napoles. He is a legend.
The definition of a warrior! Had he not had the issues with cuts one wonders just how much more he could have accomplished? No matter, in my opinion he is one of the all-time greats and one of the best Welterweights to ever lace em up and in that division that is saying something!
I saw him fight Indian Red Lopez at the former LA Forum in February 1970. His pride did not let him be introduced in the ring with other fighters so 1:13 Sugar Ray Robinson made an entrance after the fight had begun. He wore a pink sweater. I had a $45 ring side seat, actually the first 5 rows were press then an aisle. I was seated first row on the aisle happened to be near the family of Ernie Lopez, when Sugar Ray walked by I stuck my hand out and he shook my hand. I don’t think I washed that hand for a week🙂. I was a young guy sitting in the row of gamblers and guys with big diamond rings taking bets. Napoles was very good fighter second best Cuban fighter behind Kid Gavilan and probably above, not by much, the great Luis Rodrigues.
Had the privilege of seeing Napoles live, defending his World Welterweight title by a stoppage, in London, against Ralph Charles. He oozed class, and then treated us to a Mexican Ring dance in his sombrero!!! Great video on a great Champion Rich.
Rich, you've done it again. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. These stories are wonderfully entertaining, very insightful, and a beautiful tribute to all the greats, just like Mantequilla Napoles... Rich, you are, still, the undisputed, undefeated fight doc historian!!!
Thanks, Rich. I loved Mantequilla as a kid. The first fight I remember watching was his challenge of Monzón. I met him about 10 years ago in El Paso. He was already showing signs of ill health. Great memories. THANKS
What a fighter this man was. My Dad took me to the cinema to see Stracey, who was my English boxing hero, beat Napoles. He was a shell of himself at this stage, so thanks Rich, for showing the glory days.
Hi Rich, I hope you are doing good. When Castro bannes pro boxing, I have heard that only a couple of cuban were able to defect at the time. Less than 10 I believe. Ramos, Rodriguez, Paret, Napoles, Fernandez. Do you know who belong to the rest of the list, or where can I find the exact list ? I have been searching it for a while but always failed. Thank you also for this documentary. Napoles is a tremendous fighter.
Hi Louis, ah I'd have to look into that as I don't know if someone put out a complete list. There was also Doug Vaillant, Angel Robinson Garcia, Jose Stable and Jose Legra. More, I'm sure but less documented.
The Monzon fight was essentially a 5’7” blown-up junior welter vs. a 6’0” light heavyweight. There’s no way that there was only 7 pounds difference between Monzon and Napoles.
This was still the era of same day weighins so Monzon wasn't able to blow up 20lbs like these guys nowadays...I never thought Monzon was a huge middleweight, tall and very rangy but not big for the weight. 8:03
And by the way. His win over Eddie Perkins was suspicious. The Mexican Ring Magazine correspondent called it a terrible decision. Napoles was not going to lose to a cutie like Perkins in a Mexican ring. Eddie was a tremendously talented boxer. The Mexican fans want to see a blood bath. Eddie did not fight “ Mexican “ style. Napoles gave title shots to two guys Eddie in his dotage beat convincingly.
A reporter named Bill Hooten wrote that Perkins put forth a poor showing, holding throughout and getting floored in the eighth. But it is odd that all three judges scored the first three rounds even then gave Napoles the next seven.
Thanks for the reply Rich. My long time experience with the enthusiasm of the Mexican fight fans and officials always makes me shall we say suspicious. Even if Eddie had fought a perfect fight, his style, hit and avoid ala Willie Pep, there is no way he could have won in Mexico. I say Eddie fight one of his last fights in Chicago in 1970 or 71, I’m sure the record is on BoxRec, against Raul Rodriguez I think he it was. He butted Eddie and he ended up getting cut himself. The ref stepped in to admonish him. The Mexican fans went ballistic. The officials dropped the fight and called it a technical draw before a riot broke out. It was reminiscent of my times watching boxing at the Olympic Auditorium in LW where the TV guys wore hard hats because the fans bombed the ring with bottles and coins if it did not well for their fighter
Thank you, more light needs to shine on this legend when we talk about the Greats. People eye the Monzon fight but that wasn’t even his weight class, he simply dared to be even greater than what he was.
Sure thing, Ricardo.
I really appreciate the fact that you are coming back to your old style of video making. With more narrative and less fight films. Thank you for covering Napoles. He is a legend.
Sure thing, Sakutaro. The style of video really depends on the fighter and how I feel he's best presented.
