I served as an official with the New Mexico State Athletic Commission alongside of Bob. He was a lot of fun, and beneath that serious exterior was a very playful and kind hearted man! I attended his funeral when we had to say "so long" to my friend.

And Micheal Spinks style would've been why too scientific and modern for Bob Foster, and the awkwardness of Michael Spinks... That awkwardness and Speed would most definitely put the Spinks Jenks on Bob Foster... Micheal Spinks would just be way too advanced tricky quick and awkward for Bob Foster...

Thanks Rich for another winner, this one being of one of my all time favorites. It’s brought back so many memories. The Tiger stoppage, with the image of a heretofore indestructible warrior helpless on the canvas remains a shock to this day. I was at the old Springfield Coliseum for Kendall fight, an afternoon Wide World event with Howard Cosell. Foster fought there one other time against Charlie Polite. I lost track of him after retiring. Thanks for filling me in. This was an all time great. A dream match would have been Foster vs Archie Moore. Thanks again Rich. It always drives me crazy when I see someone clearly unconcious and the ref gives a count instead of ending the fight and letting someone attend to the fighter. The worst one I can remember was when it happened to Joe Walcott
The weird thing about his near disaster encounter with Eddie Vick where Foster was almost KOd in 1 is I looked up Eddie Vick's record and he had zero KOs in 11 wins. Bizarre.
@@RichtheFightHistorian when I was a teenager and training I wanted to fight like Dempsey by copying his style when one day the elder old trainer came in and watched me on the bags and sparring and said I was like a young white Bob Foster, when at the time I didn’t realise how much of a compliment it was. Sadly I was nothing like him or Dempsey in the ring but when you’re young you believe you could be, ha.

Bob was probably the best light heavy ever-a victim of his own success, really. No other light heavy could touch him, and he just ran out of people to fight at his natural weight. He was forced to fight the bigger guys for the bigger pay checks!
How about Eddie Cotton? He was from my Home town of Seattle...he fought for the title, and did well, but he did not have a real knockout punch, and so he lost a split decision to Jose Torres. Cotton worked for Boeing for many years.

Vicente Rondon went 10 with Earnie Shavers, what Foster did to him inside 2 should have been illegal. Most knockouts in boxing don't actually leave men unconscious, his routinely did.

The greatest light heavy ever? Absolutely! The best 1 punch devastater in the division. I thought he killed Quarry. I do believe he was unbeaten as a light heavy when he retired after Ahumada. Getting into the ring at 175 vs Ali and Frazier unheard of. And he cuts Ali! He's the Duran of the light heavy. Untouchable.
Foster was such a wrecking machine at light heavyweight-but fighting Ali and Frazier was too tall of an order for a light heavy built like Bob-the Frazier fight is like if Tommy Hearns fought Dave Tua. Great video and learned a lot on why Bob Foster was so feared at light heavy.

Foster was a great puncher but he sometimes didn't take fights to win other then get a payday. I think it was funny they said work the body against Frazier and he didn't even throw one body punch lol
You can’t throw body shots or any meaningful ones when your a tall skinny fighter against a short heavier guy that’s low to the ground and will catch you soon as you throw one.

I love Bob Foster!! Absolutely one of the best light heavyweights ever to reign. He had that same build and musculature as Tommy Hearns and was truly “the hit man “ before Hearns. Make no mistake, a wiry guy with a big punch is dangerous and hard to fight. The mention that he was considered as an opponent for Floyd Patterson is very interesting. Too bad it never happened. Not sure which way it would have gone, but watching him against Dick Tiger (and Floyd’s chin) kind of makes me feel like I actually have seen it. I always thought Ali’s win over him was not particularly satisfying. Frazier’s was definitive and the only time I’ve ever seen Foster truly KOd. Foster would have gone broke if I had a Time Machine. Because I’d tell everyone in the light heavyweight division to definitely not fight this guy. It’s kinda funny to me that these old time boxing announcers like Don Dunphy, compared him to Bob Fitzsimmons. Could there be a less relevant fighter? I’m pretty sure Foster spent zero time studying Bob Fitzsimmons. Anyway, I Love Bob Foster!! One the best ever!!!
Throughout the years I've do you realize how many times Foster pulled a knockout punch on Ali to let him and I say let him win that fight that was one hell of a bottle by watching how he pulls his punches to keep from knocking out because he is in perfect position for where he can't turn away from the punch and he's going into Foster's
Bob should have heeded Tommy Loughran's advice. He never had the frame to hold the weight. The Frazier fight shows the greatness of Joe. Bob had height and reach and against a lesser heavyweight he probably wins. But Joe was all pressure and negated Bob's advantages. My trainer used to put me in with a guy half my age and about 5 inches taller than me AND A SOUTHPAW! I would say to Manny "what can I possibly do!" Well to say the least he got the better of me most of the time, but it taught me how to get inside and eliminate his advantages. I hate it when Manny is right! LOL. Great one Rich

Is there even a light-heavyweight division anymore? It is clear, that Foster had a powerful punch, and a very good jab. Was ALI "carrying" Foster, until he got cut? Foster's private life was pretty tacky, it seems!...But living to 76 ain't bad, for any pro boxer...the punishment you receive in your prime years, comes back to haunt many a boxer.
Foster had an excellent jab, and with those long arms, even the slippery Ali got tagged a few times...Remember, Ali was on the comeback trail, at age 30....and his super-quick reflexes, and his early ability to pull his head away from punches, was not working so well! Ali did well to not get clobbered by one of Foster's powerful hooks!...Frazier found a way to get that done!

When trainers say come back with the left hook, think Sherrif Bob Foster, who did it consistently. A great puncher at 175lbs.

I love Bob Foster!! Absolutely one of the best light heavyweights ever to reign. He had that same build and musculature as Tommy Hearns and was truly “the hit man “ before Hearns. Make no mistake, a wiry guy with a big punch is dangerous and hard to fight. The mention that he was considered as an opponent for Floyd Patterson is very interesting. Too bad it never happened. Not sure which way it would have gone, but watching him against Dick Tiger (and Floyd’s chin) kind of makes me feel like I actually have seen it. I always thought Ali’s win over him was not particularly satisfying. Frazier’s was definitive and the only time I’ve ever seen Foster truly KOd. Foster would have gone broke if I had a Time Machine. Because I’d tell everyone in the light heavyweight division to definitely not fight this guy. It’s kinda funny to me that these old time boxing announcers like Don Dunphy, compared him to Bob Fitzsimmons. Could there be a less relevant fighter? I’m pretty sure Foster spent zero time studying Bob Fitzsimmons. Anyway, I Love Bob Foster!! One the best ever!!!
Throughout the years I've do you realize how many times Foster pulled a knockout punch on Ali to let him and I say let him win that fight that was one hell of a bottle by watching how he pulls his punches to keep from knocking out because he is in perfect position for where he can't turn away from the punch and he's going into Foster's

Bob should have heeded Tommy Loughran's advice. He never had the frame to hold the weight. The Frazier fight shows the greatness of Joe. Bob had height and reach and against a lesser heavyweight he probably wins. But Joe was all pressure and negated Bob's advantages. My trainer used to put me in with a guy half my age and about 5 inches taller than me AND A SOUTHPAW! I would say to Manny "what can I possibly do!" Well to say the least he got the better of me most of the time, but it taught me how to get inside and eliminate his advantages. I hate it when Manny is right! LOL. Great one Rich

Is there even a light-heavyweight division anymore? It is clear, that Foster had a powerful punch, and a very good jab. Was ALI "carrying" Foster, until he got cut? Foster's private life was pretty tacky, it seems!...But living to 76 ain't bad, for any pro boxer...the punishment you receive in your prime years, comes back to haunt many a boxer.

Foster had an excellent jab, and with those long arms, even the slippery Ali got tagged a few times...Remember, Ali was on the comeback trail, at age 30....and his super-quick reflexes, and his early ability to pull his head away from punches, was not working so well! Ali did well to not get clobbered by one of Foster's powerful hooks!...Frazier found a way to get that done!
