Just listened to a Duane Allman interview, where he said Jerry Garcia was an INCREDIBLE HUMAN and that he CARED AND LOVED EVERYBODY. This performance fills me with so much love, if youre reading this I LOVE YOU
When I get in the mood I feel like poor me as selfish as that is.. I put this concert on and remember how lucky I am to have spent the same time on this rock as Jerry. Thank you very much Jerry for taking the time to help us with your music
How nicely put. I was supposed to catch Grateful Dead 95' fall tour at 13 years old. Didn't happen, but it's alright. I captured the real thing from the recordings. Pure love.
I was there with Steve and Kathy the hood on the MG flipped up on the highway I thought we were going to die Anyway we made it there fell into a local bar where Rick Danko was drinking heavily and he was the opening act Some good old deadheads carried Rick to the Capitol Theater and we made our way soon thereafter and it was an amazing show we didn't know how good we had it. God bless Jerry Garcia may he and Rick Danko truly rest in peace, LOVE❤❤❤
I couldn't understand why all of college roommates loved the Dead so much. I wouldn't join them on a couple of late shows because I didn't want to be the only one not doing acid. In hindsight I should have because my first show wasn't until 1981. Missed Ithaca, Buffalo and a few others. I must admit I was a bit of a Jazz snob at this point on my musical experiences. Obviously grew up in the early seventies with lots of great rock, then Dylan but I was lost. Probably due to all the bootleg tapes and the less than ideal stereo sound I was used to. Sorry if anyone has gotten this far, but my first Dead show was almost religious especially my feelings about Jerry. I was blown away. Unfortunately he died way too young 😔 I will say that he's definitely my favorite musician of all time. Love all his solo as well as the JGB and all of his other collaborations. Thanks for posting this solo treasure!!!

Great stuff and yeah, the Going Going Gone is a helluva thing. I miss Jerry. 23 years? or some such and I never said that before. Guess its just I miss my old life. Seeing ya'll on shakedown was a great thing. I was never more me than at a show. Got married and raised a family after Jerry passed. Crazy that I chose a woman who never gathered around a fire with a song or a dance. I guess that's too much info and she divorced me anyway. Better than being dead though. What the fuck. Crazy life. I wouldn't say he's technically the greatest by any sense, especially when considering the REALLY great guitar players like Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Tony Rice, etc but Jerry certainly had soul and played with an emotion that very few have ever rivaled. What he lacked in virtuosity he certainly made up for it by being a stellar melodic player that knew how to perfectly emote with his instrument in a way that accompanied his voice so well. He's the perfect example of how it's not the passage/phrase being played, but how one plays it that matters. One will never hear a Jerry lick and think it is anyone else, that's for sure. For that, he's my favorite guitarist.

I met Jerry Garcia backstage at a show. We hit it off and he offered to mentor me in my guitar playing pilgrimage. We became very close and he confided many of his deepest thoughts with me. Miss him very much!!! RIP Jerry my dear friend!!!
Ah Jerry. This music is truly the soundtrack to my life since I get turned on when I was 17. Lucky enough to have had five solid years of 15-20 shows / year until the tragedy in '95. The music means even more now than it did then. Love you always Jerry, thanks for opening portals of my life and consciousness, and facilitating some of the most meaningful relationships of my life. BTW - this version of Gomorrah is about as beautiful as it could possibly be....
Jerry Garcia died and went through the black hole in space, where enlightened souls go, came through the other side as God of All things Good, the Dionysus of interplanetary space as it were. When I listen to Jerry, he takes me through the worm hole there to his celestial plane and back again, feeling every emotion along the way. To think, I used to dislike The Dead and didn't see or hear the message. We all grow up, we live and we die...Find Joy. Thanks Jerry!
Jerry was a gift to me. I listen now at age 50 and feel more touched now than in the mid-80s-90s when I saw the Dead many times. To hear him here - solo on acoustic - is an amazing healing experience 🤩
One of my all time favorites listened to it so many times over the miles and decades ... the lore is that it was the only time Jerry went on stage solo and he hated it so Khan showed up later ... the intimacy of this performance is stunning ... Jerry exposes his heart and soul uniquely ... Amazingly I live a block from the infamous Passaic Capital Theatre ... just moved there 20 years too late ;) ... RIP Jerry, Sleep in the Stars!
It's always been one of my favorite recordings. I would LOVE to some day find some video of this !! To watch his fingers do that excellent playing with such awesome tone
The only acoustic only solo Garcia shows, I believe. The story I heard is they were called the IRS shows because they figured out all the sudden that nobody had been keeping proper records and he had not paid any income tax and he owed a shit ton of money so he went out and play these shows to make it up real quick like. I absolutely love when he plays acoustic. I love how he'll just bust into Solo⁸s when there's no other instruments in the background playing accompaniment or maybe it's just a bass. I love that. I do that because of him
What a wonderful treat! I lived in SF 1995-2009; my last 3 shows were 6/2-4/95 Shoreline. I've maintained that Jerry wasn't just a guitar player, he was a shaman, a magic man who made his magic with music, and a VERY powerful one. I don't think he ever knew just how powerful he was. In so called 'primitive' cultures there's a legend that when a great chief or revered figure passes, there's supposed to be a huge storm, as though the Earth is mourning the passing of such a legend. Not even a week after he passed, San Francisco experienced tropical storm Jerry, the likes of which hadn't been seen in a LONG time, furiously pounded the city. I thought was that was a send off that befitted him. I feel so fortunate to have seen Jerry and the Dead so many times and seen/heard so many great shows
I started listening to the dead in 92. My mom had died and I just wouldn't talk to anyone. One of my moms old hippie friends came in and tossed me a double cassette tape. He said exactly " listen to this" it was Europe 72. I seen them twice at the end and I'm still jamming
This show has so many bittersweet memories attached to it. I was listening to it, in my car, on August 9, 1995, before the bad news hit the wire. I was going to 30 or 40 shows every year between 1991 and 1994. I had a collection of over 1000 CASSETTE TAPES and DAT. But THIS show held a special place in my heart. Going going gone... the amazing solo... the way he sings it... it'll make you cry if you're in the mood, haha! The Early show has the BEST Valerie I've ever heard.
I did a lot of shows during that time period as well. I remember exactly where I was when the announcement hit the radio. My husband taped a lot of the shows, so I have hundreds of DATs too.
This show is pretty much that almost same or the same completely..? Because I haven't finished this.. but anyway, THE Prison Record.. although he wasn't totally solo, this reminds me of that.. lol.. u pick in dat up? Lol. But I agree! Def the feeling.. I love this Ruben
And while we're at it, When I heard the news, I followed the SF Mayors requests that the city should fully tie die flags out front of ur home and establishment.. So I hung up a died shirt up on our flag pole on our front porch for a week! I had forgotten that.. thanks.. Ps.. the morning of 'the news, We had woken to a massive aftermath of a storm that flooded pretty bad.. I'll never forget that....wake of the flood...
I had never heard " Go,Going,Gone" and I have tears in my eyes! I read something a deadhead kid wrote He may never have seen Jerry but he said he realized that Jerry was singing his eulogy all along, hearing this I think he was correct! I met Jerry in 1971 and that Jerry still had dreams, Sweet Dreams Jerry Your alive in our hearts
"he's the only one that does what he does" Heard the same thing many years back from Pierre Robere(forgot the spelling but pronounced ro' bear. Dj for WMMR in Philly. Anyway, I concur
Who cares who dislikes it.Does that somehow affect your enjoyment? If everyone liked the same things,we'ed all be in trouble.Kind of like being a Deadhead from the early seventies in 1987 and beyond!
I was talking to my baby brother today about Jerry and the dead. We're 12 years apart. He reminded me that I had introduced him and his group of friends to this unbelievable music. And that most of them are now just as enchanted with it as he and I are. It really never occurred to me that he had taken the music that I shared with him and shared it with his friends. But I feel so fantastic for exposing the younger generation to this remarkable music. I don't even know the kids that my brother exposed to Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, but I'm glad he did. NFA Jerry
Greatest gift to music in my lifetime. I'm soon to be 41 and I seen the dead live twice. I've been hooked since first song I ever heard. After my mom died in 92, one her friends gave me Europe 72.
Loved Jerry,s Capital shows thru the early 80,s. We would turn dirty ol Passaic NJ into Musical sea of tye dye love . We gave away 2 miracle tickets to the early show on this day,& did the late one. Now at 65yrs old, Id think about selling my soul for 1 more tour
I still love listening tho these shows on my 90 minute Memorex tape there is just something about that imperfection of a hiss like the crackle in a record, it puts me in a trance and takes me back back to my latter high school years when life was still easy and had no worries, myhappy place, now my happy place is going to shows with my family. Ain't nothing better than watching Dead and Co. with my wife and 5 year old daughter.
@Odis Driftwood I remember those old cassette tapes - loved them too - if you have a smartphone - get soundhound & you can record these songs directly to your cell
@@tresorngray absolutely there is nothing like it, i've been listening to a lot of JGB lately. I have been acquiring them from Garcia Family website. They put out a new remastered show every couple months it seems. Some shows you can even get on vinyl or they also come with a shirt and poster for that show, really cool.
I couldn't agree more. Its funny how merle and jerry are cut from the same cloth, and how it took me living half a century to realize it. I would've said they were worlds apart when they were both still with us, I think I just had to mature emotionally and musically to Be capable of hearing the music and appreciating the magnitude of each man's body of work and prodigious ability to speak to the soul of man. Thank you God.
Reading all your posts tears me up. I saw Jerry and the dead quite a few times and it was a life-changing experience for me. Those shows are the most precious of my memories. Its good to know that I am not alone. I truly believe that Jerry Garcia was and still is the most and best-loved person of our time. He profoundly touched the hearts and souls of just about everyone that was lucky enough to see him play. He was a channeler of spirit and emotion and a true gift to humanity. No one else touched people as deeply as him except maybe Jesus but I never saw him live.
as announcer said, this is extremely rare. Just Jerry on acoustic? No John Kahn, no David Grisman? I don't know if I have a single recording of just Jerry alone with vocals and acoustic. This is a treasure!!!! A million thank yous for sharing.
I'm pretty sure this was the only show ever where Jerry was completely alone. It was a two-night gig and John Kahn appeared with him on the second night. It might have worked better for him in a smaller venue, but even by 82 jerry was filling larger and larger venues. Hard to imagine, but even though the Warfield theater in SF seated less than 3k people you could buy tickets outside before the shows for most of the entire 1980 run of GD Warfield shows. $8.50 for floor seats and $5.00 for balcony seats if I remember correctly :-)
I had been wondering if Jerry _ever_ played purely solo. Thanks for posting! I think that for Jerry, music lived in the connection with the other musicians (and, to a lesser extent, the audience). In songwriting he always collaborated. Singing in the Dead, in addition to the intense musical collaboration, just about every song he sings has harmonizing vocals. I didn't think that "pure Jerry" existed. This is a rare treat, indeed.
This is the only performance of Jerry solo. He had John Kahn jump on this tour after this show. The story I heard is that he was uncomfortable with his performance believe it or not. I always considered it just about the sweetest show ever.
This is such a special performance. Love returning to it now and then. I will always cherish the more than 125 times I saw The Dead and The JGB between 1982 and 1994. Jerry remains in my heart, my memory, and my soul.
@TheRichPersonsDigest I agree about his voice, how his dialect & pronounce his words, his expressions, his eyes & his love of his band - should I say anything else? I know i am biased - love this man!
Man, not that this isn't a treat, but if you had the show videoed ..... I had the pleasure of seeing MR. JERRY GARCIA, solo, at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic in the early 1970's. He was sitting on a chair, no guitar, and nodded off. He started to lear towards his left, but caught himself and started laughing, sitting upright again.
Best version ever!!! Enchanting... flat out one of a kind.... There’s none Jerry except for you...except for you!!!! For all the years ... and many shows....It is your guitar and your voice playing on the song of my heart... I still groove .. dance.. play guitar and love your Jam all the time...from the bottom of my heart... like I yelled at you in your camp at deer creek, Indiana..... thank you thank you thank you...you smiled and waved.....I will never forget it.
I was at this show I was 16 years old can't believe it's the only performance Jerry did solo and he wouldn't do no more he didn't like being on stage by himself so he had John Khan come aboard and help him
@@lloydclaussen226 are you sure? I don’t think so. I played one of the acoustic he used w grisman this period of time - was a rather unpleasant thin sounding guitar- tho was honored to share dna w the master . I was not at this gig but not sure you are correct.
@@haikat4 you know- the guitar sounded so bad that I don’t think i ever even looked at what guitar it was. The strings were old and likely needed a neck reset. Was just happy to get some Jerry’s dna yo help me play better!
This is beautiful. Thank you. Most of us can certainly understand the discomfort being out on stage all alone. Can't blame Jerry for only having done it once, but sure glad he did it and it got captured on tape. Very genuine... Brings me to tears listening.
Been on the bus since '85 and I'm not looking to depart anytime soon. I'm riding it to the end of the line and I welcome any and all passengers. Come aboard my friend and have a seat.... The scenery is beautiful and the soundtrack is all you'll need
Went to these shows I remember my bro in law Mike pulled me from in front of a city bus going 50mph on the way to the car.almost my last show .it was so fucking close .thanks Mike
brothers of the bus; I stepped off a curb in ‘76 for an oncoming elder in an English town and saw everyone approaching me recoil and inhale as the double decker brushed my upper arm as it approached from behind me at speed. I was unharmed. Close Call. Believe in Miracles.
Thanks for posting this show, brings back the memories, Jerry was so on that night. Nearly fell out of my seat when he played China Doll. He loved to play and we were lucky to be around to hear him.
Grateful Dead World is large. You can be a fan for a long time, as I have, and still discover new regions to explore. I never knew Jerry did a solo acoustic show! Two, I guess, on the same day.
So glad I found this on this already hot summer morning ain't never heard this one before and I love it Thankyou Jerry I'll see you when I get there ~ ~ ~
I wish I was there even though I was only 3 years old. I am grateful that I did get to see the Grateful Dead before Jerry passed away because nothing has and will ever compare to those experiences and I owe it all to my mom who had the notion to go see them live
holy shit. I played this earlier today on a little road trip. And I gotta say. The music made the trip. And omfg. That solo during dire wolf gave my chills.
mary frank Jerry is a way better rhythm guitarist than Bob. Just listen to any Jerry Garcia Band concert. Bob is very talented & his playing is unique, but he's no Jerry.
His voice is really fine here and it's interesting to be able to hear exactly what he's playing on guitar. But I can hear just how much he hated having to supply all the accompaniment himself and not having other musicians to interact with. Rhythm guitar in a band and solo guitar are two very different things.
First time I saw the Dead was just outside of Novato California. I was 8 years old and on my way with my family to see "Cool Hand Luke" at the local Drive-in. They were hitchhiking on the other side of highway 101. We stopped by a local Alpha-Beta market and there they were eating doughnuts out of the box in the store. The youngest guy who I later realized was Bob Weir, saw I liked the doughnuts and offered me one. Well Years later I realized that the guy who offered me doughnuts was Bobby and the other guys n various stages of long hair were the Dead. So awesome. And yep... Here it is 54 years later and I still Love them and all my fellow Deadheads and the Whole World (mostly) very. Take it easy Sister's and Brother's. Love You all. Each and Every One of You!!
I was fortunate in my life (72 now) to get too many events. Unfortunately, this one I missed. The rendition of Deep Elem Blues is IMHO, the best of the many versions I've heard...
if you are hearing this, consider your ears to be oh so sweetly privileged
I would def heart and or whole life react to that if youtube had more than a thumbs up
If i had none i would steal your ears
I hear it, love it
If I told you all the things that went down in this show, it'd burn off both your little ears
Blessed

In my stupid opinion. The best Garcia ever. No band. A man and his guitar😁goin...
Ur not the only dire wolf
That vulnerable voice and playfully unpolished picking style just never gets old to the ear.

Amen!
I really like what you said about Jerry - sounds so deep - just like him - he was ahead of his time!
@white Anstraight love what you said about Jerry
@@carolinacreepers3125 I second that emotion!
Jerry was a gift to me. I listen now at age 50 and feel more touched now than in the mid-80s-90s when I saw the Dead many times. To hear him here - solo on acoustic - is an amazing healing experience 🤩
@Ben Fleury-Steiner
I feel like he was a gift to me also - love love love love him...
RIP Jerry, Sleep in the Stars!
this is either some of jerrys finest guitar work ever or it’s just much more noticeable being acoustic and all alone. either way, just incredible.
Never heard this till this morning I f#%€n lθve it I love
I do that because of him
Jerry is a helluva drug. I love the righteous buzz I get from hearing his music be oh so good to my ear hole.
BwahhhAHHaaa I couldn't agree more !! Jerry top 3 performer for the ages. Couldn't even fathom who the other 2 could be.. janis, hendrix, morrison?

Can't believe I never heard of an acoustic solo Jerry! I love it.... AND A CHINA DOLL!! I'm in heaven😁
this was the only one : ) Wish he had done more..
The sing me back home, China doll, and Gomorrah are all played best acoustically in my opinion I’m so glad he was feeling them all on this night 🙏🏽
I feel so fortunate to have seen Jerry and the Dead so many times and seen/heard so many great shows
such a timeless voice even after 33 years of listening.
And timeless guitar playing !
I started listening to the dead in 92. My mom had died and I just wouldn't talk to anyone. One of my moms old hippie friends came in and tossed me a double cassette tape. He said exactly " listen to this" it was Europe 72. I seen them twice at the end and I'm still jamming
@@direwolf8124 Thank God u listened & loved it, so do I
This show has so many bittersweet memories attached to it. The Early show has the BEST Valerie I've ever heard.
carljw316smp glad to know. I listen to Jerry, Weir🤗😋or JohnMayer every day. I m into it.
Big time/:)

And while we're at it,
When I heard the news, I followed the SF Mayors requests that the city should fully tie die flags out front of ur home and establishment..
I met Jerry in 1971 and that Jerry still had dreams, Sweet Dreams Jerry Your alive in our hearts
right on man
Been a fan for thirty years and it never gets old listening to him and I still keep finding jams on the internet.
Goin goin gone is a Dylan song
🌳 It's off the lesser known Dylan album Planet Waves ('74), and BD At Budokan ('79) 🙂🌻
@Stephen Marksberry
Just enjoy -
Gomorrah at 13:46 is unbelievably awesome. I miss Jerry. 😢
Who in the fuck would dislike this! It is perfection. Jerry in his prime. He isn't the best at what he does, he is the only one who does it
I think you mean, "Not only is he the best at what he does, he is the only one who does it." A paraphrase of Bill Graham.
"he's the only one that does what he does"
Heard the same thing many years back from Pierre Robere(forgot the spelling but pronounced ro' bear. Dj for WMMR in Philly. Anyway, I concur
Precisely! Anyone any everyone that EVEN dislikes daddy can FUCK RIGHT ON OFF!! Fuck you and the horse you came in on!
Who cares who dislikes it.Does that somehow affect your enjoyment? If everyone liked the same things,we'ed all be in trouble.Kind of like being a Deadhead from the early seventies in 1987 and beyond!
I was at both shows and it was amazing. I knew it was a singular event, like watching a supernova on the crest of blue wave of life and love.
I’m 41 and my Mom also died in 92 too. Wild! JG helps no doubt. Alway has
Loved Jerry,s Capital shows thru the early 80,s.
We would turn dirty ol Passaic NJ into Musical sea of tye dye love . We gave away 2 miracle tickets to the early show on this day,& did the late one. Now at 65yrs old,
Id think about selling my soul for 1 more tour
I still love listening tho these shows on my 90 minute Memorex tape there is just something about that imperfection of a hiss like the crackle in a record, it puts me in a trance and takes me back back to my latter high school years when life was still easy and had no worries, myhappy place, now my happy place is going to shows with my family. Ain't nothing better than watching Dead and Co. with my wife and 5 year old daughter.
Maxell, but, yeah the off speed and texture... and that the way you had acquired it really sung out too!
I jammed a whole dead show recently , , took me almost a week but I found a little time ever day
@Odis Driftwood I remember those old cassette tapes - loved them too - if you have a smartphone - get soundhound & you can record these songs directly to your cell
@@linitakegel3343 I understand - his voice is like a lullaby for my natural sleep - love it
@@tresorngray absolutely there is nothing like it, i've been listening to a lot of JGB lately. I have been acquiring them from Garcia Family website. They put out a new remastered show every couple months it seems. Some shows you can even get on vinyl or they also come with a shirt and poster for that show, really cool.
After over 45 years listened JERRY & THE DEADs...what can i say: "THAT is TIMELESS & SPACELESS"😇❤🙏
IMO "Sing Me Back Home" is truly one of the greatest songs ever written. R.I.P. Merle and R.I.P. Jerry.

Couldnt of said it better.....
My dad raised me on Merle's music. He is truely one of the greatest writers of our time as well.
This is a sublime masterpiece
Geezus I miss him. He has enriched my life.

Me too

these jerry solo shows in the NY/NJ area were magic ...
This is amazing. That man was a genius.
Yeah, spaced out heroin addicts have a profound effect on some people.
@Travis Bessonette You said it correctly man - he was ahead of his time..
@@murphroberts4891 I'd rather be a little spaced out and touching souls than be stuck in the the internet trolling deadheads.
as announcer said, this is extremely rare. Just Jerry on acoustic? No John Kahn, no David Grisman? I don't know if I have a single recording of just Jerry alone with vocals and acoustic. This is a treasure!!!! A million thank yous for sharing.
You know it bro. This is rare. It lets you know what the man is about.
Jerry remains in my heart, my memory, and my soul.
love his voice. Broken and beautiful.
@TheRichPersonsDigest I agree about his voice, how his dialect & pronounce his words, his expressions, his eyes & his love of his band - should I say anything else? I know i am biased - love this man!

Jerry WORKED and he worked and do you know what he did after that? He worked. The guy never stopped.
Playing was life
It was more play than work, playing for his life!
Amen!!!
His advice and praise in '79 surely help shape my music. Thanks again, Jerry.
I was at this show I was 16 years old can't believe it's the only performance Jerry did solo and he wouldn't do no more he didn't like being on stage by himself so he had John Khan come aboard and help him
I laughed and cried all together now I needed this friend thankful again
The sound Jerry gets from the flat top is truly amazing. Great Acoustic play at its best. Love Acoustic Jerry/Dead.

@@lloydclaussen226 are you sure? I don’t think so. I played one of the acoustic he used w grisman this period of time - was a rather unpleasant thin sounding guitar- tho was honored to share dna w the master . I was not at this gig but not sure you are correct.
@@golds04 It was a Takamine I think.
@@haikat4 you know- the guitar sounded so bad that I don’t think i ever even looked at what guitar it was. The strings were old and likely needed a neck reset. Was just happy to get some Jerry’s dna yo help me play better!
His bluegrass roots come across clearly here. He had a ringing voice that oftentimes revealed an anguish and sweetness simultaneously.
Well said.
This is beautiful. Thank you. Most of us can certainly understand the discomfort being out on stage all alone. Can't blame Jerry for only having done it once, but sure glad he did it and it got captured on tape. Very genuine... Brings me to tears listening.

Not only the greatest lead guitarist in history, but the greatest rhythm guitarist in history, too!
Jackie Public III with Bobby(?).
mary frank Jerry is a way better rhythm guitarist than Bob.
@@paulperkins1615 Great insight there's a clip of Rueben and Cherise on here and he does look pained when having to do everything.
