Paradiddle fills....rudiments...We all want to learn how to express ourselves on the drums better. But what if I told you coming up with killer drum licks, drum fills, and drum beats wasn't rocket science? What if I told you there was a system for coming up with drum fills? In this lesson, I teach you a short system that will help you take any drum rudiment, drum sticking, or drum idea and turn it in to the perfect drum fill.
Here's that other free lesson I mention in this lesson...

Providing this type of lesson for free shows how much Stephen genuinely wants drummers to succeed.
I honestly couldn't WAIT to release this one. Thanks for the kind words...so glad it helped!
Agree.
tnx @@StephenTaylorDrums
In 1982 on the Mountain Music tour I met drummer Mark Herndon during a break of the band playing softball 🥎 against the local radio station DJ’s. I was a beginning drummer and asked him how to play the fast part on Mountain Music. He showed me with his hands on his legs explaining it was a paradiddle-diddle between the kick and snare 🥁. He said to learn it slowly listening to Ride the Train from the Feels So Right album. I’ll never forget how kind he was to a young drummer and a total stranger! I’ll always love the Alabama band!
This is so generous. A years of years of experience handed on. 🙏
Gray McCarthy glad it helped my friend
This is the most comprehensive lesson i found.
Thx for taking the time and making it simple to understand.
Holy grab ! Thats what i am searching around 5 years. OMG you did really great job !
Phenomenal Instruction Steven!
The best lessons on you tube.
Stephen an extremely great lesson. Agree with some of the other Comments. You are a very good teacher. Thanks.
Thank you Bill. I appreciate the kind words my friend
Stephen gives the most understandable lessons out there. He is not condescending and he truly wants the viewer to understand and learn the lesson. Great job.
Awesome lesson, "practice should not be an emotional time" is seriously excellent advice. Definitely working on putting more paradiddle diddles in my fills, if I practice every day I might be able to play some of this stuff in 5-10 years 😂
This guy is god sent
Started Teaching myself to play the drums when my son was born so we can jam someday. Your videos are hands down the best drum lesson content on UA-cam, and there are many to choose from. Man to man.. Thank you for helping me with something so important to me.
He’s 15 months old now and Dad’s slowly getting better. Very slowly 💪
Quite late to the party. But I wanted to get this out: this is one of my favorite drum-tube channels. And the fact that this is a single-man act for the drumming just speaks volumes for what Stephen's been doing for free for intermediate/beginner drummers is insane. Been a happy subscriber to the channel for 3 years and don't regret a single thing about it!(not to mention the killer lesson here!)
Like always just what I need when I need it thanks Stephen you badass
Logo stick you bet my friend. So glad it helped
Brilliant lesson! Thanks Stephen 👍
Class lesson superb..this lesson what i need.. perfect aplication paradidle
I am 52 years old and I love to learn new things every day thank you ST! Just learned a bunch of stuff for the whole week!
Glad it helped my friend!
Brilliant lesson! And your snare sounds awesome
Thanks Shawn!
Awesome stuff, new to actually learning drums vs. beating on them!
This is exactly the type of drumming video I have been searching for years. Thanks man! I always enjoy your passion and appreciate the way you share your knowledge
James Perry glad it helped James, and thanks!
Great walkthrough!!
It's very inspiring to see the ideas that we are often doing subconsciously this well articulated.
It's great food for thought both for me as a performer and teacher :-D
Mads Mortensen thanks so much my friend!
Very good lesson. Thanx Stephen!
You bet!
thanks for another great lesson.
wow so thanks for this amazing lesson
a lot of crayon to digest here; thank you friend.
I've been needing fill work for years. My worship team thanks you lol.
Wow! What an excellent lesson! Enthusiasm, clear steps, simple pattern, clever execution, precision playing, the ability to be expanded infinitely and sheet music. Thank you, thank you!
Tony Lomas thanks Tony, so glad it helped.
stephens the man thanks!
sometimes I like to watch your videos at 2x playback speed and it's like watching a speed metal tutorial. I recommend you all try it at! The explanations twice as fast are gold too
Go simple to complex, and combine all in differents ways around the drums.
That lick in the beginning was SWEET!!
Stuart, Jr Barrett 👊🏻🕺🏻
Thanks taylor
My best instructor ever. Thanks Stephen!!!
George V Torres you’re more than welcome George
Man, I don't remember Phil ever having a beard like that. Nice lesson buddy. 👍 Can't wait to listen to this
Weston DiFranco you just gotta look closer to see that beard 🧔🏻😂🤣
Awesome video! Thanks so much!
you're seriously awesome
Pierre Rohan 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
By far my favorite drum channel! I always get some new insight here. Thank you, Stephen!
Masterful lesson!!! Definitely will be sharing with my students. Thanks brother, you are one awesome drummer and teacher.
Thank you Jimmy. I appreciate it. I hope it helps your students...exactly why I made it.
Greetings from China, you're such an inspiration to me and my 5 year old son as are just starting.
Thank you! Glad you guys are spending the time together to learn this instrument
This is an epic lesson! I highly recommend everybody to watch this from start to finish but don’t get distracted by Stephens’ footwear. Lol
Thanks for organizing my practice. So helpful!
Always a great learning experience! Thanks for having worthwhile content, I look forward to these lessons.
MikkleMakkle78 you bet!
Love your lessons, for me sometimes is difficult to have time to see lessons or practice, but I really enjoy yours and take all my time I can to apply it on my drum performance. Regards. Carlo from Panamá
That was really awesome and very informative and really help people propel their drumming to new levels
20 minutes into practicing this and my brain is on fire from the ideas. I have songs that NEEDED this kind of fill and I just didn't have mental vocab for it (most of my fill ideas start with either Doubles, Triplets or Singles broken up into the "Zones"). Practicing in this way is helping me think more clinically and is translating to my ideas coming through cleaner in our band rehearsals. Stephen you are the MAN 🥁
Truly makes my day to hear it Chris! Thanks for telling me
love it man
This is very detailed awesome information. This is the first time I have seen the practice material building up to finished product. Thanks Stephen!!!
Awesome great job
This is one of the best if not the best tutorial of yours that I have watched. OUTSTANDING INSTRUCTION. Subscibed.
Dude, put that on a shirt, "I want my crayons back".
James McGrady yaassss!
Ohh thank you Stephen, Ive been trying to find new ways to make fills instead of just 16 note RLRL's and this helped sooooo much. I am greatful you made this lesson free!
So glad it helped!
Thank you from Chile!, what a great lesson dude!, I've been looking for months for some good drum fills practice's structure, may the music always be with you ▼♫♪ thanks mate!
Man that snare is tuned perfectly
Stephen your channel is amazing man...keep it up!!
The Rustedblade thank you my friend!
@@StephenTaylorDrums no problem mate
i could listen to those drums all day, what a sound... and what a drummer! :O
ZeshXD thank you my friend
16:00 is where it gets really good! 👍
What a fantastic video, bloke and way of teaching. ✌️
Thomas Twemlow thanks so much Thomas 🙏🏼
Be comfortable with pattern that start or end in middle of a bar is damn hard.
Thank you Stephen!
loving that new snare head
Me too...really happy with the heads atm.
Thank you so much for this. I just got a kit about a month ago and while I’m learning cover songs I need to understand what I’m doing. This is perfect.
So glad it helped!
Great!
This makes everthing understandable now. Take Toxicity from System of A Down the beginning has multiple complex drum fills, except they're just a basic maneuver around the toms but really sped up. With them all you have to do is find what hand placements work best for you. This works for basically any tricky fill
Oober Noober couldn’t agree more. I’ve been really excited about releasing this one. It truly is one of the most useful things I’ve ever taught. Just a simple method for exploring stickings that is a TON of fun.
0 dislikes. PERFECT
Drumbeard I’m sure they’ll come lol. Glad you dig it!
@@StephenTaylorDrums I'm currently going through it. Shame I'm not from the states, I'd love to pay you for a lesson in person, cause nothing can replace working 1:1 with someone. But I have to say, I love that you make it simple, you organize the lessons, you are straight to the point but without being judgemental towards people that don't know something. I play drums since 2008, it's 11 years, but I'm still kinda a caveman (kinda like Ulrich - I play for the music, not so much for the technique so to speak), but whenever I have time I try to pick a lick or something.
Great that there are such fine people as yourself that spend their time to help others.
PS: Pardon my English, I'm from the asshole of Europe, Poland :P
I love your channel because I am obsessed with your cymbals
Thanks Bryan! Got some new ones coming (supposed to get here today) that I'll throw up on here soon
Stephen Taylor 🤘🤘🤘👍👍👍👍🥁🥁🥁🥁
Thanks so much I’m embarrassed I am a 45 year beginner but trying.
Don't be embarrassed. Over 60% of my online students are older than you, many just starting. Glad to have ya in the fam!
Those K’s btw are awesome....high hat spinin round. That’s cool
Thanks!
A video on early Electric Wizard (specifically the albums Dopethrone and Come, my Fanatics) would make me ecstatic!
There's an appalling lack of content about early EW's specific style, especially the drums, which really just entrance you any time you listen. Infectiously groovy, the epitome of heavy metal for me.
This video makes me want to buy my first drumset and shift from guitarist to drummer. Lol Nice content again. :)
This is all GREAT! There are a few things that I'm a little cloudy about though. I will go ahead and say that you can resolve somewhere besides 1 (step #9) but expect the people you are jamming with to get confused...lol! Secondly, I realize that this is instructional but, the cymbals are only being used as punctuation. I would have a zone that was just cymbals. (This is no disrespect, Stephen....you ROCK!)
It's awesome as musicians when we get our crayons back!!!!
I'm a brand new drummer. Ive only been drumming fir a couple weeks and this freakin blew my mind
Welcome to the fam!
what an insane vid your video really helped me and made me more confident and for that i thank you
Youssef Moataz makes my day to hear that!
wow, just wow!
Great concept & lesson here Stephen 👌🏽🎶🥁. Happy holidays to you & the fam
tdrum21 thanks! Merry Christmas my friend
Those crashes sound soo good
Nick Halverson thanks Nick! 18” k sweet on the left and 20” cluster on the right
Let me get one
Can I get some of those
Love your sticks
Fantastic vid once again man! So so useful :)
glad it helped my friend
I do something similar w. less structure.
I take a simple rudiment, la 3-stroke roll, and work all the possible permutations, sticking w. hands and feet, accents, drum kit surfaces and note values.
It's slower & messier, but it engages my creativity and often leads to fun musical discoveries.
And those lil' treats keep me practicing! =)
For sure man...you still have a system, it's just not as structured. You achieve the same result without a step by step approach. And that's fine. Most have trouble with this though. If what you're doing is working for you, keep doing that for sure!
@@StephenTaylorDrums - Cheers! I greatly appreciate all that you freely share w. the drum community!
I've just started learning and Stephen is brilliant but I'm not at this level lol. Great to watch though.
So glad it helps!
Thanks Stephen . I'm from England I'm 56 years old and have just started out on the drumming road. Had an early Xmas present off the wife...a yamaha dtx 432 electronic kit. Been playing about a week and I think I'm doing OK. Got my first lesson next Thursday. I love watching your stuff. Keep up the good work.
hi you bless me. do you a book with all your drum lesson
Very challenging. I'll see what I can do.
Great video, as aways.
Please, do one showing some examples of drum fills in 6/8.
I'll see what I can do my friend
Love it ! Lol on the Phil Collins bit :D
I really like the "Zoning" concept! I do it but i never had a name for it. Don't mind if I "borrow" this idea from you, lol
Drum Tip Tuesday borrow away!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Very helpful. I'm gonna give it a go but I'll have to practice this WAY slower... I'm so sloppy when it has to be fast. Thanks!

Wish I could like more times.
Charles McCue Thanks Charles!

Lemme go and put my t-shirt on!
David Hamilton LoL 😂
Hello kind sir, im a newbie drummer and well, im practicing my paradidles on my drum pad for 2 weeks now.. and whenever i apply these techniques on my drum kit, i actually pull it off but slow... Thank u for this video... How many months do u think i can pull these off fast?
This is so very hard for me to follow. I’m Dyslectic, I just can’t follow THE LRRLLR...& I loose the sequences switching from one letter/hand to the next. I just can’t keep track of one letter to the next. I. Mentally visualize the drum & the stick to direct my hands from one drum Note to the next.
Hi
Dude, can you break the mould and try to show your sticking from the front of the kit to show the lateral movement of the sticking please? I'm a lefty and struggle to follow you righty types!
Thanks for the feedback Matt...I'll see what I can do!
❤
👍🏼
Taylor can we use RLRRLRLL?
Sure, use whatever you want. The system is what’s important, not a particular sticking
Seems like intermediate / intermediate-to-advanced stuff. If I’m a beginner, and still struggling with building my hand technique, should I even start trying this?
personally go all the way with hand technique, you'll thank yourself a year later
Drill the moeller technique in real good
You should def dive deep on the technique...but...I have found it's best to work technique beside other material. Just working technique can lead to a stale practice session. I suggest workin technique first in your practice time and then moving on to other groove/independence related material.
For sure, what Stephen has presented is gold. Start at the level you are, maybe that’s 1/8th notes or 1/4 notes hand to hand. Following Stephen process here you’ll learn dynamics, phrasing (zones, getting comfortable moving round the kit) and embed that nice and early ready for more complex things later. You can get plenary of ‘perfect’ fills out of 1/8th notes. Maybe start with two beats rather than a whole bar.
The later stages (grid) are higher level, so maybe nail the early steps into your playing and dip the toe as exploration in the later ones
Well this one lesson should keep me very busy for the next several years , or more .
