- Up next we celebrate Benny Mardones who passed away 2 years ago. Considered by the industry to be a one hit wonder. His one hit, called Into the Night was much more than that simple label.. It has charted 3 different times over the last 40 years including hitting the billboard hot top 20 twice in the 80s at the beginning and end of the decade. It’s one of the most misunderstood song of the rock era, and isn’t about what you think it’s about! It’s singer and writer was a special soul, who battled his demons and won, inspiring so many along the way. Hey music junkies Professor of Rock always her to celebrate the greatest artists and songs of all time. the whole reason this channel exists is to honor artists and songs that have made a paramount difference in our lives. so subscribe below to help us do that.
This is a special episode of professor of rock. 2 years ago we lost a great human being. Who happened to be a singer and songwriter. He co wrote and sang a hit that is a no doubt about it Bottled Lightening Classic. Benny Mardones. I was fortunate to get to know Benny in the years before he passed way after a brave fight with Parkinsons. I did a long ranging interview with him about his career.
His ups and downs and his legacy. Though some of this interview was released a few years back I wanted to lead with never before released footage which makes up the majority of this interview including his redemption after a long fight with addiction as well as the compelling story about how he created the 3 time hit Into the night. This is one of my favorite interviews i’ve ever done. and I wanted to share it to keep Benny and his music at the forefront of our minds.
He was a tender and humble. soul. Into the Night is a Bottled Lightening Hall of Fame inductee no question. It charted 3 different times. including twice in the 1980s and is one of the most played radio songs of all time. Benny also tells us about meeting some legendary songwriters who have long since passed. If you were ever to see one of our interviews this would be the one. Coming up next on Professor of rOck

Benny sure made a difference in those kids' lives. He gave them just enough to not feel hopeless and they turned out ok, just like he promised them. Benny also made a difference in our lives writing such a classic. Sometimes it only takes one. I teared up with Benny when Professor said that he did make a difference. People need to hear that when it's warranted. Rest in peace Benny and see you on the other side.

I could feel he was going to cry, you felt the tears welling up in his eyes, trying to hold it together. I cared for my father in-law who passed with Parkinson's and dementia. It was very difficult while raising children. It is hard on the whole family, so many sacrifices. Mr. Mardone has an amazing wife to stand behind him and make him feel worthwhile and loved. Glad he finally got some recognition and respect. I felt this song personally. My mother had 13 children. My father walked out on her, leaving her to raise 8 children on her own with no financial support. He moved in with a younger woman and her three children. He was also abusive so him leaving was a break from that most of the time. He would drop in some times and still abuse us and our mother. Thank you for honoring this talented, caring man.

You treat people so well- with such respect. That was a first class interview! Telling him, in as honest a tone as you could have, that he laid down one of the greatest vocal tracks of all time, nearly had me in tears. conversations like this remind me how beautiful people can be.
Barry Mraz was my stepfather. He passed when I was 14 and it means so much to me to be able to hear this interview. Benny was a huge part of my childhood. I always feel Barry and Benny are saying hi when I hear this song.
A pastor I heard speaking at a colleagues wake said, "There are three kinds of deaths. The first is when you take your last breath. The second is when you're laid to rest. The last is when you're forgotten." Your stepfather and Benny still live!

That was one of the sweetest and kindest interviews I've ever seen. When you touched his shoulder it was a very genuine, human moment that Benny needed right then.
You paid tribute to Benny, but I would like to pay tribute to you as well, Professor. You touched that man in a way few could. He had been robbed of the thing he was best at, something he loved. You reminded him that he touched hearts as a performer. I salute you, Sir..
I don't know how I managed to never hear the story behind the song, I'm so thankful to you for not only enlightening me but also for the huge gift that you gave to Benny. The way he teared up when you talked about his voice and legacy showed how impactful you were to him.

Benny was so kind to those 3 teenagers. Out of that kindness came a hit song. And because of him, they are all thriving. Awesome interview 🧡💛💚💙

Their set-designer father played a pivotal role in planting the seed for this iconic song's creation. I don't condone his choice to abandon his family, but had he not left them destitute, 16-year-old Heidi wouldn't have shown up with her siblings on Benny's doorstep. But for this classic song (for which Mardones himself is best remembered), Heidi would not have been introduced to her wealthy (future) husband when she was 21. So everything worked out just fine for everyone.

He definitely had an impact on my life with this song! I just spent the last 20 minutes crying my eyes out. This was my parents song… and although they divorced almost 30 years ago and my mom hated my dad 😂 (rightfully so), it reminds me of my mom because she still loved this song. She just passed away unexpectedly at 61 and this song has a special place in my heart. I just remember her singing it in the car. 💕 Thank you Benny.

My brother caught him as he fell off a stage in upstate NY. He was fighting the flu and still cared so much about his fans that he went on stage even though he shouldn’t have. He has so many amazing songs! He will be missed
This is one of my all time favorite songs. To this day I get goosebumps when I hear Benny’s gravely voice singing. What a great guy he seemed to be. Parkinson’s is devastating - I had an aunt who had it. As long as his song is played, he will never be forgotten. RIP Benny. ❤
I have serious doubts that we will ever see the caliber of talent and music influences as we saw from the 1940's through the 1980's. The number of genuinely talented singers, songwriters and even actors is unmatched. Singers in those eras could sing live without any pitch correction or auto tune. The songwriters who have left behind the standards and the classics are unparalleled. How I wish that music was possible again, but I'm afraid it will never be seen again.
What he did for those children was absolutely wonderful. They must've had such trust in him to go to him in tears when they were abandoned. A great man!

@Burps I'm with you buddy. This song got on my everloving nerves when I grew up! But it kinda grew on me shortly after he passed. After watching this video, it definitely gave me a newfound perspective on this song, especially since it's not an easy tune to sing.

I was never crazy about this song..........I mean there is so much great rock songs out there. However I have always without even realizing it had recollections of being at the community pool and the way it was in the early eighties when I hear this. No wonder it came out then.........I was 7 in 1983 living in probably the most unique apartment complex I've ever seen. A huge complex w a actual shopping center in the middle.....being at the community pool is a fond recollection. I remember it being common that there would be a stick at the bottom of the pool in the deep end.....guess thats why they had use so much chlorine.....that you still smelled it the next day....even after taking a shower. The complex is still there.......however now its a shit hole.....the stores are mostly empty..........and its been on the news as a place of murders and crime activity.

If you’re from Central New York, Benny Mardones was not merely a one-hit wonder - he was a superstar. Syracuse was his adopted home. We embraced him as our own. Into the Night is his signature, but Sheila C is his magnum opus. Great interview!

He seemed like a sweet man. I loved how he gave his wife credit for taking care of him during his illness. It's wonderful that you recorded this interview with him prior to his passing. I don't think I will look at one hit wonder singers or no hit singers the same after seeing this. Thank you and thank all of those that sing, that give it their all, it does make a difference.
I always think that's one more hit than I have. I'm not a professional musician, of course, but that is neither here nor there. Tough job with fleeting rewards.

That was the most heartfelt, emotional interview I think I've ever seen. He didn't need to tell the story with vocal gymnastics, there was no ego involved. Every word came straight from the heart. Absolutely one of the most passionate deliveries of song. Reminds me of some of the emotion you feel from Steve Perry. A wonderfully written song.

Of course that is where most minds wander. IN fact it never notes that the singer is even an adult themselves. It only laments the girl is too young to be "in love" with him. Frankly I imagined this as someone say 18 singing about being in love with someone 16. That's a Highschool Sr and a Fr / So. It happens every single day I assure you. I would agree with you that if I had imagined it was a 30 year old singing about a 16 year old....thats gross.

One of your best interviews! He mentioned Sammy Cahn and it brought back memories for me. Back in the early 80's I was Working at a candy cart at Century City Mall in LA. Sammy used to pass by almost every day to get some free samples that I gave away. He always had a new song he was working on. One afternoon he came by and pulled a napkin from the pocket of his blazer. "I wrote this for you kid", and he gave it to me. There was no title but he signed it, From your friend Sammy Cahn. The lyrics were about a guy giving away love. I had that napkin framed and still have it to this day.

Benny Mardones has told so many different stories about this song that it is hard to know what is fact or fiction. The song is a classic though.
What a fantastic interview. I've never written a fan letter in all my 73 years, but you conducted that like a maestro. You didn't say much in words, but when you did speak every thought you expressed brought out the perfect reaction and emotion. But most important of all, you let him shine instead of trying to cast the light on yourself. Huzzah, Professor. Well done.
When this song came out I was 16 years old and raising a mom with alcohol and drug addiction problems I was struggling tremendously when I heard this song I made it mine it described me through and through. When my grandmother heard me singing it in my bedroom as it played on my phonograph She came in and broke the record saying that was disgusting because she was one of them thinking it was all sexual. I had a long talk with my grandma and I told her what that song meant to me she went out and re-bought the album and listed to it with me . we both sat there and cried she said this is no life for you too much has been put on your shoulders. Then I met the man of my dreams at 18 I was married and a mom by 27 I was burying my mom from her addiction problems. I got in my car and just drove around the city of Miami with no destination replaying that song over and over and over and Wishon I still had the struggle.

What an incredible interview. So heart wrenching. When Benny said that he hoped he made a difference in the world, I lost it. The floodgates opened up. You assuring him that he made a difference was so touching.
I shed a tear when Adam touched Benny’s kind and gentle heart.
Tom Brokaw has said before that he has found that money's not so hard to come by, but making a difference feels that way. Personally not sure I'm doing so great on either front then, Tom, and I refer to the band Alabama for reassurance:

That really was a sensitive moment. He surely made a difference, to the life of those children and to those who love his music.

In 2013, my father passed away from Parkinson's after a 10 year battle with it. He never smoked, drank, or even swore once (amazing). He battled it with such a wonderful attitude and this interview brings me back to it all. Thank you for giving Benny his due.

My uncle had it too, and he was never a smoker or drinker, either. He was badly beaten once when he was in the military, and we think that caused it. It’s a tough situation to go through. We were very close.

I was afraid that when I clicked on this video I was going find out that one of my favorites 'Into the Night' was just a unrequited crush song. What I found is that after all these years, it was born from a place of real human caring and compassion. It made the song even richer to me. Such a touching interview. I was lucky enough to get to talk to Benny and we shared a couple stories about his fondness for the Central NY region and it was an honor to talk to him. Hew was truly genuine soul (who actually friended me on Facebook) and I'll cherish that memory for the rest of my life. My husband and I are both singers. My husband leads our worship team at church. Five years ago he was diagnosed with Parkinsons. This came on the tails of my own battle with cancer. We can truly relate to Benny. His song was played almost nightly when we were teens, helping us drift off to a dreamland. We are grateful that you posted this interview, shedding positive light behind this song. Our hearts are with the Margolis family and the family of those children that were left behind by their father.
Mr. Mardones had one of the greatest voices of the rock music era. He is missed.

He passed 10 days after my own father passed, 2020 was a horrific year of losses. My dad bought me my first albums at 9, Fleetwood Mac Rumors and Eagles Hotel California, from that moment on, it was all about music. I was lucky enough to be a kid of the late 70’s and 80’s and of course this song was in my rotation and brings back a lot of memories. This story is beautiful and Benny broke my heart… he just wanted to be a great musician and drugs and Parkinson’s had other plans for him. What a damn shame. RIP Benny, you are loved 🦋🌻❤️

Adam, let me tell you, it takes a lot to pull tears out of me these days. For some reason I have a hard time letting the emotions out. It's something that I've been working on, because it is unhealthy holding them in. However, this interview hit me like a ton of bricks. I admire you so much for what you do here and I'm so very grateful to you for taking the leap and making the decision to follow this path. This interview is the perfect example of why it is so important. Benny was a gem. I could listen to him sing and tell stories all day.

20:15 I've always loved this song. When he says he left it all at the microphone, you can just feel it. It was sung with so much emotion so much feeling that you can see the story in your mind as he singing. I love your interview professor! To hear it straight from Benny's mouth. I had no idea that it was a true story. And what happened to that young woman after such a rough Start in life was a wonderful thing. It's a very touching story and it's very sad because we no longer have Benny with us. We lost so many wonderful artists. I start to sound like my father when I say they just don't make music the way they used to. I loved that song the moment I heard it in 1980 and his vocals were amazing. The emotion in the song was unbelievable. I was so happy it hit the charts again in 1989. Benny definitely made a difference. I loved the song and it made a young girl happy. I will always cherish it.
Yes! I'll never forget the summer of 1989 when into the Night was all over the radio...you couldn't escape it! Whenever I hear it now, I'm immediately a kid again and it's that very same summer once more.

I wish we all could have told him that. I can’t watch without shedding my own tears for Benny. My dad had Parkinson’s so I know that it’s a cruel disease. What a story. Even though I've heard the song many times, I didn't recognize the title or the singer until it played. That interview was so important to him. I felt bad when he said he was never invited to do any of the collaborations of more popular groups. Everyone has their place in this life, thank you for including him and bringing attention to his music. Every song is important to someone in some way.

This interview touched me in ways you can't imagine. An entertainer himself my dad passed away from Parkinson's disease 22 years ago and i saw the same look in Benny Mardones' eyes that i had seen in my dad's eyes. Thank you for letting him know he made the difference. Rest easy, Benny.
One of the most powerful songs of all time. This one makes me truly sad knowing that he died back when COVID was relatively new. He was an amazing singer. Rest in peace, Benny. Now, imagine if Steve Perry or Lou Gramm were to do a cover of this song.
If you listen to some of Benny's late 80s stuff (the album "Benny Mardones), the slower songs all have a Steve Perry feel to them. I think you could swap vocals on either's songs and get another great song.
Agree. Initially when I heard this song I thought if Steve Perry, but I knew it wasn't him. Radio stations wouldn't announce who he was or the name of this song. I wrote to the radio station for a playlist and that's how I found out.

I was wrong. I grew up hearing this song but never gave it a thought... it just seemed so over the top. Thank you for revealing the meaning behind the song and an appreciation of Benny's work. He's a beautiful soul, and your interview brought that to life.
I cried the whole way through. This was a real person, not just an aging rock star, but a guy who asked himself the same questions we all do. When you told him that he made a difference in people's lives, he teared up...right then I knew that he was a true musician...a creative, sensitive soul. I have to believe his spirit lives on. Hopefully, somewhere out there, there is another sensitive soul who has a song on their heart and who will share it with the world. We need it now, more than ever. Thank you for bringing this forward once again. He did make a difference, but with much more than just his music.
Into the Night is one of those rare songs, that when you hear it for the first time, it feels like you've heard it all your life. I'm so glad that Benny explained what the song is really about. It makes the song even bigger. What he did for those kids is so much bigger than any record, I hope he did realize that. This was a great interview. Puts things into perspective. Thank you!

I went to college in Syracuse NY, where Benny never left the airwaves. Into The Night, of course, but several follow up tracks including Sheila C. and She's So French. Whenever Benny came to town he would sell out every ticket. He was not a native, but the town sort of adopted him.
I grew up in East Syracuse! 58 now & loving Adams channel!!!!
Benny always said that Syracuse would forever be his hometown because this was where he came to get clean from his drug addiction. So many people here loved him for that. For a while, "Into The Night" was in heavy rotation on at least one of the rock radio stations and every time I heard it I would turn the radio up because it's a song that needs to be sort of loud in order to really feel the emotion.
Definitely an adopted son of the 'Cuse. Agreed Sheila C. and She's so French are also vocal dynamite from a vastly underrated singer RIP Benny!

I grew up in Syracuse in the 80s and saw Benny twice in local bars. They were incredible shows and then he invited my friend and I to a after show party at a different bar. Had an awesome time meeting him. A great soul.

Just about 31 years ago I met my best friend in college. He used to always sing the hook when he made a great play while playing John Madden football. It was always hilarious. But none of us ever heard of the song and thought he was making it up. We were predominantly R&B, Soul and Hip Hop listeners, so anything outside of our wheelhouse was whatever we saw on MTV. Then our junior year we were listening to a rock/pop station and the song came on. My friend started screaming that's it, I told you it was real. Lol. We definitely joined in for the chorus to sing with him. It was too funny. I miss those days. Now I find out the song was a big hit. Lol. RIP to Benny! Great story and meaning behind the song. Great memories with my friends in college. :-)
This was my favorite song in the 80s. I still love it. I used to think it was about forbidden love, but later, when I heard the story behind it, I realized it was about a greater kind of love. He took them in when they had no where else to go and showed them kindness when he didn't have to and gave them hope. What a wonderful man and singer he was. RIP Benny Marconi's.

My son's grandfather died of Parkinson's, what a horrible, hateful disease. We watched that kind, brilliant, good man lose his mind and waste away. He was the love of my dear MIL's life.

I just watched this again for what could be fifty plus times. Into The Night was and always be my number one song. The first time I heard it I broke down in tears. The song is just perfection if there ever could be only one word to describe it. Benny's tone and the rasp of his voice on top of a perfect story is what makes this one just pure perfection.

I always loved this song and thought it was beautiful. In fact, when I met my (now) husband, I was 16 and he was 20 going on 21 and we were both innocent in "that" regard... People had a problem with us being together. "What does a 20-21 year old want with a 16 year old? Something's not right!" Well, it actually wasn't like that... Like I said, we were both innocent in "that" regard. Well, here we all are 34 years later... Still in love and still holding hands, etc. - going strong! 😊This is one of "our" songs.

I bought this 45 in 1980 and wore it out ! I was so happy when it was re-released in 1989. Into the night was the song of the decade. Thank you for this interview. You said to him what I would have said. And yes…that song and his voice touched my life! To this day, I still play that song. A truly amazing piece of art. RIP Benny
Thank you for this. I saw the video that was made for this amazing son. WTF were they thinking, and who signed off on it. The man in his 30's peeping through window of teen girl after being turned away by the dad, white van in the background, climbing in through the window (my son said the rolling out of a mat on a mat was clearly to catch dna). That song was beautiful, and if you wonder why there are negative vibes, look at that video. I appreciate your bringing attention to this song, I could cry to think what that video did to damage such a career. The songwriting is prolific, the singing is a God given talent, and the origins of the song so profound. Keep up the good work. Hard to believe you have not cracked 1 million - you are amazing.
