  • "One evening in the early 70s, a trio named the Bee Gees took the stage to play to a hometown crowd It was supposed to be a fun show but it turned out to be a demoralizing indicator of where their career stood at that moment. The attendees were more interested in getting drunk, then listening There was no question about it…the Bee Gees were at a crossroads… With 3 straight albums that were commercial failures. They were in a bad place but the adversity made the bond between the brothers Barry Gibb. Maurice Gibb and Robin Gibb was stronger than ever. It’s the story of how one of the most successful acts of the Rock Era reinvented themselves when Barry found his falsetto and the #1 hit Jive talkin came from driving over a bridge and the sound the tires made on the road...

IT’S TIME FOR ANOTHER editions of our show breakthrough where we breakdown songs, albums or events that kicked open the door to an artist or band’s career. On previous episodes we have covered Do You Believe in Love by Huey Lewis and the News, Boys Don’t Cry by The Cure, and West End Girls by Pet Shop Boys. Today we’re doing a little something different… This band already had broken through but then began to fade into obscurity but then they had a second breakthrough that would make them one of the biggest groups ever.
It was a beautiful afternoon in August of 1970, when Robin Gibb went over to his brother Barry’s house to reunite after a falling out between the two caused an 18 month breakup of The Bee Gees.
It felt really good to get back together as brothers, and to rekindle their artistic collaboration. The elation they enjoyed during that pivotal visit led to the writing of an emotionally-charged ballad titled “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.”
Robin & Barry phoned Maurice, Robin’s fraternal twin and the ever-congenial third member of the trio, and soon the Brothers Gibb went to a studio to create the song. Their first thought was to offer the tune to popular crooner, Andy Williams, but they decided to record it themselves, as the foundation to an album of new material. The following year, in August of ’71, Barry & Robin’s reconciliation piece “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and the Adult Contemporary chart:
It was certainly an exciting time for The Bee Gees. They had the rush of having the #1 record in America, and a smash across the world, but when the euphoria faded... the band floundered, with no idea of where they were going next. Barry put their state of mind in perspective when he admitted that if The Bee Gees were not brothers, they would’ve broken up. It was their BROTHERHOOD that kept them going.
On the heels of the huge success of “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” the Bee Gees label at the time, Atlantic Records, begged for more of the same. So the guys, in an effort to give the label what they wanted, continued to write, what Barry called “dreary ballads.

I doubt think The Cyrkle's "Turn of the Century" (covering a song from the Bee Gees' First") reached the top 40, but it was a pretty good song. Soft Pillow's remake of "Gilbert Green" wasn't a hit in the U.S., but perhaps it was in England (I don't know). The Bee Gees recording is much better. Terrific song that ought to have been a hit for someone.

When it was announced that it was the BeeGees, I was floored - I thought, “They’re back! Wow! Haven’t heard from them in years!! Nobody slips from the rock scene for that long and makes a comeback!” Truly a special feat for any band. They are The Hit Makers of all time and let me add that I am a Beatles fan. The Bee Gees in 1978-79 did what the Beatles were doing 10 years earlier. They ruled the charts. There was a 4 week period when they had #1 & #2 simultaneously with Stayin' Alive & Night Fever. There was a week around that time when the Bee Gees wrote 4 of the top 5 songs. One of them was an Andy Gibb song, and one was by Samantha Sang. As for their older stuff, I just rediscovered "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" a few weeks ago. Their harmonies at the end of the chorus are simply breathtaking!!!!

I didn't recognize their genius when I was young, I was too into punk and new wave and considered them a "disco" band and snubbed them and Michael Jackson. Now that I'm in my 60s and have matured and have broadened my love of other genres of music, I see that I was very wrong. I'm enjoying rediscovering music I never gave a chance back when.
This is why I love Adam's deep dives into music history, and I also love a guy on a public radio station who has a 2 hour radio show on Saturdays called "Rhapsody In Black" with host Bill Gardner. Mr. Gardner finds "lost" recordings of first recordings by original artists of songs made famous by other musicians who covered them. Pretty much everything Elvis did, but even Pat Boone had hits with songs written by little-known black artists.
I found out about the legendary Ruth Brown from his show. She was very popular in the 50s, but not well known to white audiences. She had a comeback as a Broadway performer and won a Tony award in 1989, so she's one of my personal favorite comebacks, though most rock fans don't know her music.

I have always said the Bee Gees had 3 careers. The early ballad driven stage, the disco reinvention and the legacy of great songs they wrote and produced for other artists. Having only one of these parts of their life as a band would have given them great success and allowed them to be very well remembered but when you put all them together you come up with one of the greatest musical careers any band has ever had. Barry Gibb's ear for a melody is nearly in McCartney's league. Thanks POR for another great show. RIP Robin, Maurice and Andy. Your music lives on.

I watched in awe as the Brothers went from sad ballads (The Lights Went Out) to Saturday Night Fever madness. A lot of excellent, sublime songs across a long career. Robin Gibb's voice is just divine. So many great tracks. They were undeservedly dismissed in the seventies by some but made a hugely successful comeback in the UK in 1987 with You Win Again, which sparked off a run of hits on and off for the next ten years. Robin Gibb lived in an Oxfordshire village in a house where Joan of Arc's fate was decided, and Henry the Eighth and Anne Boleyn once stayed there too! The brothers could all sing and harmonise so well but his voice was the best in my view. The way it soars on Alone from 1997 is one of the best vocals of the era. His funeral was very sad, with his beloved dog following the coffin. A great band and so sad that only Barry survives his brothers, including Andy. There is a statue paying tribute to the Bee Gees on the Isle of Man, where they originated. Fitting that it should be there.

My sister bought that record with Jive Talking on it - Main Course - when it came out in the mid-70s. She wore it out and her two-years younger brother (me) fell in love with the song-crafting of the Brothers Gibb. Every track on that album is excellent, not a single dud. Truly a masterpiece. My favourite song on it is the moody Country Lanes, sung by Robin.

A very important band, the BEE GEES are a foundational cornerstone of the modern music era. I can't imagine a world without them or Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder behind her. Respectively, they were both juggernauts of songwriting in that time with hit after hit. Truly talented, they were forces to be reckoned with that became untouchable: the Kings and Queen of Disco/Dance! Disco never died, it just morphed into Electronica. Thanks, Doc. CHEERS!

When they made their music change in the 70s, I was there for it. My first concert (at age 15) was the Spirits Having Flown tour, and they were awesome. I have been to many concerts since, but this was my first, and of course it was extra special since I shared it with my big sister. The Bee Gees are musical geniuses!
One of the first songs in my late 70s conscious memory is “Too Much Heaven”. I’ve loved their harmonies ever since. In junior high and high school my brother and friends teased me for liking The Bee Gees, but I didn’t care! Well, I cared a little. But not enough to stop listening.
Nowadays they I’m glad get more of their due from critics and fans.
    My Bee Gees 5-er:
    1. Fanny (Be Tender with my Love) - Quincy Jones said this might be the finest R&B song ever!
    2. More than a Woman
    3. How Deep is Your Love - maybe the most gorgeous ballad of all time
    4. Night Fever
    5. Too Much Heaven
    Honorable mentions:
To Love Somebody - when my company was acquired, the new CEO and Chairman serenaded the corporate employees at lunch with this song 😎😂 - unforgettable!
    Love You Inside Out
    One
    Jive Talkin
    Stayin Alive
    Tragedy
    Massachusetts
Plus the great songs they wrote for others:
    Emotion
    If I can’t have you
    Islands in the Stream
    Heartbreaker
Simply one of the best groups of all time.

I rediscovered the BeeGees sometime in the last ten years and were blown away by their talent. In the seventies I bought my first transistor radio and started listening non-stop and the BeeGees were my favorite group, but I followed the trends. I married and had children and quit listening to music through the 80’s, 90’s and 2000 to 2010. During that time I matured and developed my own opinions about what I liked. When I returned to music I found that the BeeGees, once again, rose to the top. As a teen I had no idea how many songs I loved were BeeGees songs. How Can You Mend A Broken Heart was one of those. In fact, I have listened too nearly all of their albums and have not found a song I don’t like. TheBeeGees often say, “Our songs are like our babies,” when asked to pick their favorite, “we love them all,” and…so do I.

BeeGees are my 'first love' in music, probably the only artist I ever felt so deeply about. Discovered them around the 'Fever' period and was so fascinated, went back and devoured everything I could find of their past recordings and lives back to childhood. Followed their careers since, became an Andy fan when he broke out, loved all the music they did for and with other artists, remained a fan long after their popularity again cooled...and wept as they passed away with the years. Their style, sound and avante garde lyrics were the songbook of my younger life.

I have a confession. As a 59 year old man, I too was a victim of the disco era in the late 70's. Every weekend, I would go to the local mall dressed in silk shirts with collars that seemed to go on forever, two-toed shoes with 3" heels, and pants so tight you could have counted my relatively new pubes. I was 14/15 years old, and as such, was ripe for the influence of friends seeking to mingle with young ladies. The Bee Gees, Donna Summer, Rose Royce, Earth Wind and Fire, they all provided the soundtrack of my youth. Don't get me wrong, I was an avid rocker as well, but disco was just better to move your feet to.

Had an overwhelming crush on a classmate since grammar school but it was not to be, as soon I would move overseas. 1984, I returned to my hometown to bury my father, and as I drove by, I saw her standing there. She was a full-grown woman, free and even more beautiful than I had a right to imagine. Yet again it could not be, for as free as I was, disposing of my father's affairs took an inordinate amount of time and attention. 2024, still live overseas and never saw her again. Short of 70, "To Love Somebody" still transports me to that time and place and to her, vividly. A very happy memory. Thank you Brothers Gibb!

I got my great-grandmother into the BeeGees with their early hits. She came to visit me when I lived out of town. It was very special to share my music with her. When Jive Talkin' came out, I was so excited. She was in a nursing home by that time but she loved Barry Gibbs' voice and knew who they were. Music brings generations together. Love keeps them close.

The Bee Gees were all over the radio when I was growing up.
Lots of hits seemingly one right after the other.
When Saturday night fever hit the theaters, it catapulted them into the stratosphere.
A band that really left an indelible mark on many world wide.

"Saved by the bell" is probably my favorite song of theirs, my dad used to play it when I was a baby and it's always been such a powerful piece for me.
However, their late 90's album "Still Waters" is fantastic all the way through. They managed to contemporize their signature sound and it works so well.
So much more than a "Disco Era" band!

You said it! In 79 I fell pray to the non-sensicle anti- disco hoopla, preventing me to publicly display what I privately loved. Thankfully , they allowed me back in to the FOLD, where I enthusiasticly scream The Bee Gees frickin rock, y'all!!!!! Greetings from S.Texas..love the channel!

I watched the Bee Gees documentary that was released recently, how can you mend a broken heart? It totally brought me back to those days when I was a kid and completely in love with the Bee Gees. I hadn’t listen to their music in many many years but I’ve been listening to it now, and appreciating it with a mature perspective, and realizing just how brilliant it really is.

Thanks for this, Adam! I'm a massive Bee Gees fan.I thought I'd seen all the video and coverage of these guys over the years. It's interesting to see this story covering a LULL in their career!

what gets understated is just how many songs they have written for other artists. Its MANY. They were extremely gifted in several ways.

Barry Gibb is just a genius song writer. He could have composed music in any era. So much talent.

I still remember early mornings getting ready for school in the 60's, my mom had the radio on and there were the Bee Gees. Then the 70's and Staying Alive was the soundtrack too coolness!
It's hard to believe only Barry is left, the loss is personal to all of us! RIP guys!

Take it from an international-traveling musician who did a cover of 🎶I Started A Joke🎶 & 🎶Unchained Melody🎶 in Thailand & the crowd went nuts when the "fahlang" sang those 2, followed up with 🎶Sukiyaki🎶 & finished with 🎶Nights In White Satin🎶
Sing OR Perform ANY BeeGees tunes in Thailand & "you're in" over there😎🎶

always loved their music ! in the 70's one of their song printed a memory in my head mid summers day looking out of a barn window , radio playing ; what an awesome time to be a teen !

Wow that's incredible Barry Gibb didn't know he could sing in falsetto until well into his professional career. If I ever gave it any thought I would have assumed that he was aware of that talent far before then. That's like discovering in your thirties you can walk a high wire.

Can't find what you're not looking for, I guess.
I've sung my entire life; discovered an entire OCTAVE AND A HALF I didn't know I had in my thirties because I'd only ever needed to use my lower range. Then I was singing along to the radio at my parents' house and my sister was like "when did you learn to go that high"?

As a teen in the 80’s, I once ripped a radio out of the dash and chucked it out the window because I turned it on and The Bee Gees were playing(no lie). Then in the late 90’s I heard a three piece (acoustic guitar, washtub base, and a snare and high hat) bring down the house with “Staying Alive”. Changed my whole opinion of them.

This song was the first and only time my grandmother's stereo first got turned all the way up to 10. My grandmother and grandfather suddenly had tasks to do outdoors, while my brother and I jammed Jive Talkin as loud as we possibly could. I have always been an unapologetic Bee Gees fan, even through and beyond the disco backlash. 12 top 15s in a row? 8 #1s? They all live on in greatness. Timeless classics for the ages. As good as any songs in rock & roll history. As good as any songs in all of remembered music. The moment in my grandparents' living room started a lifelong love for one of the greatest bands of all time.
