I was in an abusive relationship when this song came out. Believe it or not, this song gave me the impetus and bravery to get out. I will always be grateful to her for this song.

Yup, I had an abusive husband, Aimee’s song helped me to see how wrong and bad it was, so I got out before he succeeded in strangling me. Thank you Aimee for your courage to sing about abuse, it gave me courage to get out with my 6 month old baby girl.

Commercially successful music is very rarely the best music being made. It generally follows the underground scene, albeit late on the uptake. Whatever genre you're into...the underground scene will always be the most rewarding in a musical sense. 99% of the commercial stuff that attaches itself to that scene will suck.
Aimee Mann is the only person to ever be a guest vocalist on a Rush song (Time Stand Still), which is high praise of her skills. Voices Carry always takes me back to the summer of 1985, but it has a timeless sound and message. She’s a treasure.
She also sang backup on a few other songs on that album and was in the video for Time Stand Still. And of course there's her appearance in the movie The Big Labowski.
Thank you so much for covering Aimee and specifically Voices Carry. As an 18-year-old young man when this song came out I was considered a total wimp by my other buddies for falling in love with this song, but its musical power and the power of its lyrical message was undeniable in my mind. It’s still my favorite song out of the 80’s, and Aimee will always be a genuine star in my mind. ❤
I saw Aimee & her husband Michael Penn on tour together in May 2000. They both had an aversion to their best known song, so they sang each other’s biggest hit - Michael sang “Voices Carry” and Aimee sang “No Myth”. They had a comedian instead of an opening band - I think it was Patton Oswalt. Truly a wonderful show, so glad I was able to see it!!

Yeah people like the "Professor" think that because a musician isn't at the Taylor Swift level they aren't doing anything. I have enjoyed Aimee Mann's music for over 30 years. She is very much active.
The 2 most impactful songs for me in the 80’s was ‘Til Tuesday “Voices Carry” and Susanne Vega “Luca”. Heavy lyrical content but so beautifully done. Things previously unspoken but in your face here. Important music to have been made.
Luca still gives me goosebumps to this day. When that song hit the charts in my country, I had just left an abusive relationship with a guy who was beginning to add physical abuse to the coercive control and constant barrage of "humorous" put downs I had lived with for a couple of years.
Everything about Aimee Mann was avant-garde. Her music, her hair, her clothes. Amazing voice! Coming Up Close’ is my absolute favorite of hers. Great episode, Professor! ☮️💟
Voices Carry was such a groundbreaking song in that it illustrated not just the physical abuse, but the psychological and emotional abuse that occurs in a toxic relationship. The latter wasn't much recognized or talked about in the 80s. I listened to the lyrics and realized that at least one man had pulled that crap on me. Aimee let me know that it was NOT okay. I'm probably one of many women whose eyes were opened by this song.

@@sarah2.017 I have the same hope as you, and I'm sure it did cuz I was in a three year relationship with a woman where there was almost nothing but gaslighting, psychological and emotional abuse, as well as being an absolute one-way-street relation... When you're in it, because of the love you feel, you don't notice that, but thanks to the artistry of someone as talented as Aimee Mann is, you are exposed to "digested experiences" helping you with your own transition... As a survivor of emotional abuse, this was the song that helped me wake up to what was happening to me since birth. They don’t have to hit to destroy lives.

I remember being shocked by the graphic depiction of domestic violence in the video & yet so very touched by it. It was a ballsy move back in 1985, especially on MTV. The searing poetry of Aimee's lyrics cut me to the core. The contrast between the disturbing subject matter & that undeniable hook you simply can't get out of your head makes it one of the 80s BEST songs!
This song is so meaningful to me. My brother Kenny loved this song and Aimee Mann. Kenny and I were both very much into 80s music, and this song was always in his top 5. Kenny passed away in 2019, and I miss him every day. Thanks for highlighting such a great song and Aimee Mann's brilliance...and for bringing back some wonderful memories of Kenny ❤

Thank you for for posting! I've heard a million stories about what that song is about. I was a teenager in the 80's, and I always thought that was the most underrated band of the decade.
I was 17 when Aimee entered my world. Voices Carry was the anthem for us angsty teenage girls who ate up the New Wave and New Romantic era. Her voice was perfect for all of altos to sing along with in a sea of mezzo and sopranos that filled the airwaves. Aimee was a goddess. I was also a huge Rush fan and later, when she did her duet with Geddy Lee, this young mother felt like music had come full circle. I'm now 55 and still love Aimee. Her more recent music spotlights a rich and warmer timbre that doesn't have the bright and wobbly voice of her youth. It's matured beautifully. I still love singing with her. Just like I did back in 85' when I would rewind the cassette to hear Voices Carry, just one more time. Thanks, for the memories.

Aimee Mann's move in the last several years to self publishing and self promotion on her own boutique label is a triumphant move on her part. Her last few albums are well worth the listen. She still has a gift for creating ear worms. Her album, Mental Illness, is a masterpiece.
I love her album, "Whatever". Her song "Mr. Harris" is almost the antithesis of "Voices Carry". In "Mr. Harris" the song is about a young woman who finds love with an older man who reminds her of Jimmy Stewart. It's such a sweet song without being sappy.
I like the sound of that, as well as her fantastic contributions to the "Magnolia" soundtrack, much better than an anecdote involving a very young, very snobby Aimee working in a Boston record shop in the early 80s and making condescending comments about punk rock to members of Gang Green, an incident well documented in American Hardcore: A Tribal History by Steven Blush. Not a good look for a gal who likes Iggy Pop. These are references I make for Gen X and older as the kids can't interpret or appreciate the sophisticated films of Paul Thomas Anderson nor possess the necessary attention span to read a book 😜

This song always hit me so hard. My ex husband, then boyfriend in the 80’s, used to gaslight me for decades and one of his favorite things to do was to shoot me “the look” if I got too loud; especially if I was telling a story or if I was so happy or excited that I would let out a No Way!! it would immediately make me freeze up and shrink back down to a place where he wouldn’t be judged by my actions. I’m 61 and at times I still get loud when I’m telling a story to family and my 88 year old mother will act like I’m screaming at the top of my lungs and she will look around like the neighbors will here me. It never fails to make me feel like shit. After I divorced the ex one of my favorite things is that when I have to be around him for my kid’s sake I can say and do things that I just know makes him want to be able to shoot me that look - and he can’t. The few times that he’s done it I just laugh and keep going. 😄
I'm in my late 40s, and it sounds like I'm a lot like you, animated and excited (or, loud) when I'm telling a good story. My laugh is loud and recognizable anywhere on this earth 😂 I was in 2 abusive relationships, and being loud enough to be noticeable was an "embarrassment" and something I would pay for dearly, specifically when alcohol was involved. They changed me for a while. Luckily, I found 2 souls in this world that love this about me enough that they made it known often, so when people give me "the look" when I'm getting excited, it reminds me that this excitement is what makes me, ME, and it's what people I care about love about me! We're not for everyone, we have something different, but it makes us who we are. I'm not going to let anyone dull my shine anymore, and I hope you don't either ❤

Aimee Mann is the queen of '80s pop/rock. I was lucky enough to interview 'Til Tuesday in Boston where I lived at that time. Aimee was intelligent, sensitive, brilliant and funny as Hell. The rest of the band (I ALWAYS interview the entire band, not just one person) was engaging, with fascinating road stories, and teasers as to the meaning of certain songs. They were great! I was lucky enough to meet her in 84 in Faneuil Hall, after hearing her on the ol Bryant College radio station JMF & the Boston's video station (think it was ch. 68, if memory serves correctly.. being a 14 yr old punk (1st in my high-school) I was totally star struck and she was so generous with her entertaining my teenybopper self
She didn’t disappear, she was always there. I bought all her records as they came out. Particularly in her solo career she was/is a brilliant singer/songwriter. She doesn’t get enough attention, inexplicably. Oh, BTW, she was one of the Nihilists in The Big Lebowski, the source of the missing toe. Impress your friends with your learning. :^)
She also appeared on Buffy the Vampire Slayer performing a couple of songs at the Bronze (S07E08). Her character/self was also aware of the existence of vampires, something most normal people seem to not acknowledge.
I’m so glad this song came out when it did. As an abuse survivor by my family and a few partners, this song hit me hard and made me start realizing I didn’t need to tolerate the BS I was dealing with. Her solo work has helped me work through a lot of stuff, especially “Wise Up” as well, but it was “Voices Carry” that helped me the most.
She also was the only outside collaborator with Rush when she did a duet with Geddy Lee in the Rush song Time Stand Still - one of my favorite Rush tunes of all time
I absolutely STILL LOVE this song. So haunting and beautiful and the video is amazingly awesome. This song gave me the courage to see the abuse I was going through in a relationship. I thank Aimee Mann and Suzanne Vega for being one of the first artists to bring awareness to the subject of abuse.
Congrats on your courage. Though it didn't get noticed as much at the time (mid '80s), Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs sang about the same subject of abuse in the song What's The Matter Here.

She has been here forever. Her first solo album, "Whatever" is what got me listening to her back in the mid 90's but it came out in '93. She has been making badass music ever since. I went to see her twice. First when my fav album, "Lost in Space" came out, and again right before "The Forgotten Arm" came out. She put an album out in 2021.. Now she's working on a graphic memoir. She's a freakin genius.... i guess you can tell im a big fan, eh? 😊

Are you serious? This very video has a clickbait title and this channel is immediately going on the “I call bullsh*t” list. IMann didn’t disappear at all. Til Tuesday made two more albums and she continued touring. Once some legal bs was cleared up with the record label she started a solo career, which continues to this day (along with a band she’s also in).
This guy does that shit CONSTANTLY. He does generally do the research and impart info that I didn't know before, which is why I keep watching him, but I'm constantly annoyed with him and can only watch so much at once.

Amy found a way to become successful and have authenticity along with her own voice in her own style of music. So what it took years to accomplish that, better late than never. she didn't fade out into obscurity like so many 80 one hit wonders. Also worth mentioning was her collaboration with Rush on Time Stand Still- which is a truly great song from the prog rock power trio. I personally favor authenticity over commerciality anytime. That song wrecks me. I'm a survivor of childhood abuse. It was the way my father treated us, always screaming. I just wanted him to shut up, to stop. I always cry when I hear it.
Thank you so much for putting together awesome stories. Because I’m so old, I watched the very first broadcast of MTV. “Voices Carry” remains one of my favorite videos of all time. I was unaware of the backstory until now. I remember I cried the first time I watched “Voices Carry,” and I would shout to my sister to come watch it every time it aired. Today, when I hear this song, it’s a gut punch. I can’t wait to share this video with my husband, who is my high school sweetheart. We grew up watching MTV and listening to The Cure, Ministry (since their early years), The Smiths, Et. al. In the early years of MTV, alternative musicians had airtime. I can clearly remember watching the Clash, Kate Smith, and the Cure. Unfortunately, as the years progressed, MTV focused on main stream music, and my husband and I had to watch 120 Minutes to see the bands we followed.
For their last several years, maybe even a decade although I actually was not aware of it when they stopped showing music videos cuz I'd already given up on them completely... but for that last several years, 120 Minutes was the only time of the week that was worth watching. I distinctly remember that it was on that show that I was introduced to Liz Phair via the video for Never Said, which was a perfect pop song and should've been a huge hit. But her label didn't promote that (her first) album beyond making that video, so I never heard it on the radio, and the regular rotation on MTV was just awful. That first album, Exile In Guyville, was simply outstanding, one of the very best of what turned out to be a very good decade for music. But I digress! So yeah, 120 Minutes was our last bastion while it lasted.
Voices Carry to me is a very honest and haunting song that addressed a topic that hadn't really been dealt with in a song before and was something many woman could identify with. She opened my eyes to the fact that there were toxic relationships between lovers and also made me realize this behavior could go on in other kind of relationships such as between friends and between parents and children. For me it rang true and was a startling realization. Thank you Aimee for writing this song.
I first heard ‘til Tuesday on March 15, 1985 when they opened for Hall and Oates. I still have the faded ticket stub in a box. When they played Voiced Carry, the hair on my arms stood up and I just KNEW that was gonna be a big hit! That summer on vacation, I started hearing them on the radio. 38 years later, we are still talking about that haunting refrain and the raw emotion of that outro… I was 16 then and it is still one of my favorites at 55+!
I was a young teen when this song came out. I immediately loved it and I honestly think it empowered me to NEVER get into relationships like that and, if I found myself in a situation like that (which I did once for a short time) to get the hell out and don’t look back. This song was really influential to a lot of women no matter what their age. Thank you, Amy! ❤

I loved Aimee Mann’s voice since the first time I heard Voices Carry. Radio tried to “kill” this song by all the constant repetition… I found the song again in 2002 and remembered her magnificent voice. And then I found What About Love! God, what a song!! Aimee Mann’s voice was (and still is) OH SO UNDERRATED!
I saw her perform at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit in 1995 and she performed Voices Carry in its usual form at the end of that show. Her solo work is tremendous. She’s my favorite songwriter of the last 30 years.
There's no question that Aimee Mann is truly a talented woman in her own right...I had endured an abusive childhood myself and this song brought me a sense of inner strength to not only overcome my tormentors then, but anybody else who even tried to subdue me later in life. So thankful for her bringing this song to the masses ❤
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are by far my favorite band of all time. I saw them in 1985 in suburban Chicago at Poplar Creek with Til Tuesday opening up for them. What is still etched in my mind till this day is Amy's voice echoing all over the venue with Voices Carry. It was amazing. I was just 20 years old, but I knew that night was special

I met Aimee Mann when she played at city winery. I was working and had an opportunity to talk to her tell her that voices carry helped me find strength to walk away from the toxic relationship I had with my family. It’s a beautiful song and I still cry when I hear it.
I've always loved the construction of the chorus. The first chorus is just Aimee. The second, more...voices...come in, like as support. The final choruses just seem to ROAR with the subdued anguish of the first two. Brilliant writing and production!

I love Aimee Mann and she was an amazing talent. The fact that the Canadian Prog Rock Trio Rush had her guest appear and sing on their 1989 Time Stand Still single just shows how good and respected she was as a musician. She still makes that Rush song sound great to me. And I cannot remember them ever asking any other artist to guest appear on a studio album. Great memories! She is a pretty good bass player too.
Let's talk about how incredible this album is sonically. Especially Voices Carry the song... it's masterfully tracked, mixed and mastered. Just incredible when you consider it was all to tape. This album is amazing.

I loved the video that went with Voices Carry, especially the end when she stands up in an audience shouting the song and the guy is so embarrassed. I never realized it was about abuse until I saw that video. This is definitely one of my favorite songs.
Til Tuesday are one of the 80s' most underrated bands. As much as I adored the "Voices Carry" single (and still do), their debut album was just okay for me. Then they released "Welcome Home", one of that decade's most unfairly overlooked albums, and the even more personal "Everything's Different Now", and it was such an impressive leap. Aimee was key for that progression, because she handled most of the songwriting for those two albums. And here's the thing : her last solo albums are some of her finest, especially the Grammy-winning "Mental Illness" released in 2017. You can't say that from many artists. Thanks for highlighting this true 80s classic song !

'Til Tueday and Aimee Mann NEVER got the recognition they deserved. The next two albums, Welcome Home and Everything's Different Now are simply amazing. Aimee's masterpiece, Coming Up Close, is one of the best songs of the entire decade.
It's one those perfectly crafted songs- cool lyrics, wonderful melody and beautiful harmonies. Aimee created a sparkling gem that still sounds great today.
Absolutely. That album was one of my favorites from that entire decade. The previous lp, Welcome Home was outstanding too. Everything's Different was even better; I never understood why neither album didn't sell better than they did. Aimee's solo lps in the '90s are very good too.
I saw her in concert at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London in 1994. There was an awkward moment when she started a song and then stopped saying ‘F… it, I’ve forgotten the words’ The audience cheered, gave her a massive round of applause and she smiled ‘ and said you people are so understanding’ Bit of adjustment and then carried on. Great performer and came across as genuinely nice to everyone. I was introduced to her music by a girl I was heavily involved with in the late 80’s and our split up was acrimonious and tearful. For years the song ‘Believed you were lucky’ always touched a nerve as I felt that is how our relationship was.
"Adam, as you know, Pat Benatar had two songs on abuse, Love Is A Battlefield & Hell Is For Children. Voices Carry, is a song that used to follow, or be played back to back with Love Is A Battlefield. There was a lot of new wave bleeding into the pop music. Great video. I remember seeing her play with Michael Penn at Cafe Largo in the mid nineties. They both sounded fantastic and she was very friendly and open to talk to. I remember asking her what she had coming up and she mentioned something about a movie centered around her songs. I had no idea that was to become Magnolia. Great work as always professor!
Great job, Adam! Did not know about her early childhood trauma. So glad you covered the years following Voices and Boston and her fight for creative independence. Some of her solo work, Bachelor No. 2, Lost in Space and, of course, the Magnolia soundtrack are so beautifully expressed, lyrically and melodically. One of my favorites.
When I first heard this song in 1985 as a 24 year old college student, I felt her pain. I grew a long rat tail and played Voices Carry frequently for a few years as I had my own turbulent youthful romances. It's a powerful song by a true artist, Aimee Mann.

There was a girl I went to school with, who had her hair done like this. One day she was working as a checkout clerk, and I just couldn't take my eyes off of her, wondering if she was in trouble, and needed help. She looked up at me a couple of times and to this day I wish I had said something. I'll be 50 tomorrow and I hope I was wrong. Years later I got into an actual abusive relationship myself after being raised by abusive parents. Glad I got out.

I'm 52, dealt with a toxic relationship, and a few haunting visions myself... funny thing is: sometimes I've received more genuine human interactions from checkout ladies, than from friends... most of all I'm so grateful music is always there for me... I absolutely LOVED this song, back in the day, as well as the video! Aimee's lyrics just pulled at my heart strings, and the instrumentation in the song itself was just surreal. SO many wonderful things about this song. I was delighted years later to hear the song 'Coming Up Close', which I feel was definitely one of their best and SO underrated.
Totally agrees, 'Til Tuesday created some amazing music that I listened to over and over again and still do.. Crying shame they didn't have more success, they certainly deserved it.
I remember that early version of Ministry, and I really liked them back then. I still have my With Sympathy album, in fact. I had no idea Aimee Mann was a member. She has an amazing voice and deserved to be on her own or fronting her own band anyway. Voices Carry still sounds so haunting.
Love the mid 80’s, early prime time MTV period sooo much better than today. Aimee’s performance in this video made this already great song even better. Even her understated acting parts are great.

Aimee is an incredible songwriter. This song was one of my favorites during my High School Freshman year, and I continue to be a fan through her solo career. My girlfriend, who is 6 years younger, said she used to think the song was “This is Scary” when she was a kid! I love that!
Absolute brilliant songwriter and lyricist. Her voice is amazing and she does not get the credit or recognition she deserves. When I first heard the song Voices Carry, I thought it was about an affair and abuse. I remember watching the video on MTV and thought, wow, she is amazing! New subscriber here! I was in the Air Force when this song came out, I come from a physically abusive childhood, saw my mom being treated horribly by some of her relationships throughout the 60's through the 70's, I recognized within the song the suppression & denial required & expected from the victims of abuse & trauma perpetrated by so called "loved ones" & family, while being very aware to staying silent in order to keep the voice of truth from carrying out into the world drawing the "wrong" kind of attention from the outside world. This song was a catalyst to unfreeze all that fear & self-loathing buried deep in one's soul, the kind of fear that twists & distorts the psyche. This song put a very visible crack in the facade of perfection that was very mainstream in those golden days of our society. Where it was a man's world w/ women & children expected to put on a happy face in order to conceal from the outside world all the torture going on behind the veneer of god-fearing decent people. It was imperative to keep what was happening behind the walls of our house from ever being discovered by neighbors, teachers, friends, church, & family for fear of scandal where the victims would be called liars, possessed by demons, & the list was endless. The abusers always got away with their behavior & if some trouble did occur that aroused suspicion causing somebody to spend & few days in jail to dry out, when he got out & returned home everybody paid the price for bruising his ego & pride. So it was just easier to smile & hide the belt & switch marks on our body's & deliver our best Southern manners to the outside world & keep the curtain tightly drawn shut hiding the truth that was occuring behind those walls of our personal Hell from any prying eyes. Watching the video on MTV was a tonic of sorts that eventually led me to facing my horrible childhood & finding therapy & support. Unfortunately I am the only survivor of those days. I can't help but wonder if I had not been gay & which led to being thrown into the street at age 16 & told to never come back because of Jesus thinking I was a disgusting pervert, mind you I was a sexual virgin until my early 20's in the Air Force, so I never quite understood why Jesus was so mad at a virgin gay teenager that deserved to be disowned & thrown away, but that was the early 1980's for ya. I've been on my own ever sense. The others all died from addiction issues. I could never go back home, so I truly believe that being thrown away ultimately saved my life, everybody that stayed behind all died. "Voice's Carry" touched my unspoken trauma & gave permission for people to acknowledge their secret pain. I think God moves through artists & I believe for myself that Aimee Mann was put on this Earth to provide that catharsis for me & others. I'm not saying she's a prophet, but she did put a huge light onto the underbelly of how some relationships can be devastatingly toxic & that one can choose to stand up & say enough, no more, let our voices carry, we deserve to be heard, we matter, & we all deserve genuine authentic unconditional love. Thank you Aimee Mann, I still cry hearing the song, but my tears are no longer from recognizing my hidden pain, but now they are tears of compassion, forgiveness, & gratitude!❤

It's clear from the way you speak that you're on a level well beyond "recovery" - it's a shame that things have to be that bad for some of us, but the fact is that if we do the work, we can not only come out the other side healthy, but we can actually be ahead, in that we can carry forward with us the kind of empathy and compassion that makes a good and giving nature even more accessible, and that can be difficult to attain without originally suffering. You said what I've been trying to articulate when people talk about "how great" those days were. They weren't so great, they were huge populations of people living a lie in fear, in suppression, trying to be some perfect (or at least "normal and functional") version of what society expected. Don't admit the abuse, the addiction, or the sadness, or if you do you will be shamed and outcasted. It was a lonely, confusing time for me, thinking it was just my family that had issues. These days we aren't keeping quiet and keeping things suppressed like we used to, people must face the uncomfortable truths more often that have ALWAYS been there. This is what the people I know that want to return to those days really mean, they don't want to live in a world where people make them uncomfortable with their honesty, for a myriad of reasons. I agree music is a spiritual experience, it changed my life many times, and feels otherworldly. I'm so impressed with the work you've done and how you've persevered and succeeded in life. It's truly amazing what you've achieved, especially after living through the days where sexuality was shamed and people were harmed, I'm really proud of you, even though I don't know you. “Everything’s Different Now” album is absolutely brilliant and even though it was released as a Til Tuesday album, for all intents and purpose it was actually Aimee’s debut solo album seeing as she mainly completed it on her own after the dissolution of the band. Each and every track on “Everything’s Different Now” is a masterpiece. The album is stunning in its beauty and also in its honest and emotional telling of Aimee’s heartbreak over the ending of her relationship with musician Jules Shear which is the running theme throughout the record. A very underrated masterpiece of a record and one deserving of much, MUCH more recognition.

I always enjoyed how the Live shows would insert Aimee via prerecorded video. For an interesting read, check out Neil Peart's backstory on why he wrote the song and felt including a Female vocalist added to the atmosphere of the song. PS - they initially wanted Cyndi Lauper, then Chrissy Hynde (of the Pretenders). I think Aimee's "softer" take than the "rasp" sometimes used by Cyndi or Chrissy worked much better with Geddy's voice. Absolutely one of the best tracks to "introduce" Rush to a new Fan ...
Im glad you finally covered Till Tuesday. 1985 seems to have the most memorable new wave/post punk music of that decade. It had other great hidden gems like Perfect Way by Scritti Pollitti, Love &Pride by King and Small Towb Boy by Bronski Beat . Alyou you had Tears For Fears, A-ha, and Simple Minds making it big that year . Voices Carry is a very powerful and moving song. Aimee also has an unrated solo career and I love that song she did in Magnolia Save Me especially when the whole cast starts singing
My friends and I had completely forgotten Love and Pride until recently when the ghost of that song drifted through my memory triggered by _another_ memory of dancing at a club back in the day 😂! It's now on all our 80's playlists. I never hear about it otherwise so its nice to see someone else bringing it forward!😊
I am a huge King fan and seriously rate their second album Bitter Sweet from which Love and Pride comes. The Taste Of Your Tears is also a superb song. They owned a large part of 1985 in the UK with several appearances on TOTP. They are largely forgotten but were much better than the critics allowed- they were proficient musicians and could really play live. Paul King's solo album is a bit patchy though not bad. There is a four part interview at a museum in Coventry on You Tube where Paul King talks about the band. There are also a couple of other interviews on a radio station that are online. He has recently bought a farm in Valencia, as you do.
There was also Be Near Me by ABC and You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive. In my opinion, the top three years of the 80s in order have to be 1984, 1983, then 1985.

Commercially successful music is very rarely the best music being made. It generally follows the underground scene, albeit late on the uptake. Whatever genre you're into...the underground scene will always be the most rewarding in a musical sense.
99% of the commercial stuff that attaches itself to that scene will suck.
Aimee Mann is the only person to ever be a guest vocalist on a Rush song (Time Stand Still), which is high praise of her skills. Voices Carry always takes me back to the summer of 1985, but it has a timeless sound and message. She’s a treasure.

I saw Aimee & her husband Michael Penn on tour together in May 2000. They both had an aversion to their best known song, so they sang each other’s biggest hit - Michael sang “Voices Carry” and Aimee sang “No Myth”. They had a comedian instead of an opening band - I think it was Patton Oswalt. Truly a wonderful show, so glad I was able to see it!!

The 2 most impactful songs for me in the 80’s was ‘Til Tuesday “Voices Carry” and Susanne Vega “Luca”. Heavy lyrical content but so beautifully done. Things previously unspoken but in your face here. Important music to have been made.
The same topic of abuse was done very well at the time (mid '80s) by 10,000 Maniacs with their song What's The Matter Here.
Luca still gives me goosebumps to this day. When that song hit the charts in my country, I had just left an abusive relationship with a guy who was beginning to add physical abuse to the coercive control and constant barrage of "humorous" put downs I had lived with for a couple of years.
Mine was definitely Small Town Boy, and Why by Bronski Beat.

Voices Carry was such a groundbreaking song in that it illustrated not just the physical abuse, but the psychological and emotional abuse that occurs in a toxic relationship. The latter wasn't much recognized or talked about in the 80s. I listened to the lyrics and realized that at least one man had pulled that crap on me. Aimee let me know that it was NOT okay. I'm probably one of many women whose eyes were opened by this song.

When you're in it, because of the love you feel, you don't notice that, but thanks to the artistry of someone as talented as Aimee Mann is, you are exposed to "digested experiences" helping you with your own transition... I remember being shocked by the graphic depiction of domestic violence in the video & yet so very touched by it. It was a ballsy move back in 1985, especially on MTV. The searing poetry of Aimee's lyrics cut me to the core. The contrast between the disturbing subject matter & that undeniable hook you simply can't get out of your head makes it one of the 80s BEST songs!
This song is so meaningful to me. My brother Kenny loved this song and Aimee Mann. Kenny and I were both very much into 80s music, and this song was always in his top 5. Kenny passed away in 2019, and I miss him every day. Thanks for highlighting such a great song and Aimee Mann's brilliance...and for bringing back some wonderful memories of Kenny ❤

Thank you for for posting! I've heard a million stories about what that song is about. I was a teenager in the 80's, and I always thought that was the most underrated band of the decade.
I was 17 when Aimee entered my world. Voices Carry was the anthem for us angsty teenage girls who ate up the New Wave and New Romantic era. Her voice was perfect for all of altos to sing along with in a sea of mezzo and sopranos that filled the airwaves. Aimee was a goddess.
I was also a huge Rush fan and later, when she did her duet with Geddy Lee, this young mother felt like music had come full circle.
I'm now 55 and still love Aimee. Her more recent music spotlights a rich and warmer timbre that doesn't have the bright and wobbly voice of her youth. It's matured beautifully. I still love singing with her. Just like I did back in 85' when I would rewind the cassette to hear Voices Carry, just one more time.

Aimee Mann's move in the last several years to self publishing and self promotion on her own boutique label is a triumphant move on her part. Her last few albums are well worth the listen. She still has a gift for creating ear worms. Her album, Mental Illness, is a masterpiece.
She's amazing. In every syllable of the word. Have you heard her first 3 solo albums?
I love her album, "Whatever". Her song "Mr. Harris" is almost the antithesis of "Voices Carry". In "Mr. Harris" the song is about a young woman who finds love with an older man who reminds her of Jimmy Stewart. It's such a sweet song without being sappy.
I like the sound of that, as well as her fantastic contributions to the "Magnolia" soundtrack, much better than an anecdote involving a very young, very snobby Aimee working in a Boston record shop in the early 80s and making condescending comments about punk rock to members of Gang Green, an incident well documented in American Hardcore: A Tribal History by Steven Blush. Not a good look for a gal who likes Iggy Pop. These are references I make for Gen X and older as the kids can't interpret or appreciate the sophisticated films of Paul Thomas Anderson nor possess the necessary attention span to read a book 😜

This song always hit me so hard. My ex husband, then boyfriend in the 80’s, used to gaslight me for decades and one of his favorite things to do was to shoot me “the look” if I got too loud; especially if I was telling a story or if I was so happy or excited that I would let out a No Way!! it would immediately make me freeze up and shrink back down to a place where he wouldn’t be judged by my actions. I’m 61 and at times I still get loud when I’m telling a story to family and my 88 year old mother will act like I’m screaming at the top of my lungs and she will look around like the neighbors will here me. It never fails to make me feel like shit. After I divorced the ex one of my favorite things is that when I have to be around him for my kid’s sake I can say and do things that I just know makes him want to be able to shoot me that look - and he can’t. The few times that he’s done it I just laugh and keep going. 😄
I'm in my late 40s, and it sounds like I'm a lot like you, animated and excited (or, loud) when I'm telling a good story. My laugh is loud and recognizable anywhere on this earth 😂 I was in 2 abusive relationships, and being loud enough to be noticeable was an "embarrassment" and something I would pay for dearly, specifically when alcohol was involved. They changed me for a while. Luckily, I found 2 souls in this world that love this about me enough that they made it known often, so when people give me "the look" when I'm getting excited, it reminds me that this excitement is what makes me, ME, and it's what people I care about love about me! We're not for everyone, we have something different, but it makes us who we are. I'm not going to let anyone dull my shine anymore, and I hope you don't either ❤

Aimee Mann is the queen of '80s pop/rock. I was lucky enough to interview 'Til Tuesday in Boston where I lived at that time. Aimee was intelligent, sensitive, brilliant and funny as Hell. The rest of the band (I ALWAYS interview the entire band, not just one person) was engaging, with fascinating road stories, and teasers as to the meaning of certain songs. They were great! No ego trips. TY Professor of Rock for REALLY breaking it down right. 😊

I’m so glad this song came out when it did. As an abuse survivor by my family and a few partners, this song hit me hard and made me start realizing I didn’t need to tolerate the BS I was dealing with.
Her solo work has helped me work through a lot of stuff, especially “Wise Up” as well, but it was “Voices Carry” that helped me the most.

Congrats on your courage. Though it didn't get noticed as much at the time (mid '80s), Natalie Merchant of 10,000 Maniacs sang about the same subject of abuse in the song What's The Matter Here.

I went to see her twice. First when my fav album, "Lost in Space" came out, and again right before "The Forgotten Arm" came out. She put an album out in 2021.. Now she's working on a graphic memoir. Amy found a way to become successful and have authenticity along with her own voice in her own style of music. So what it took years to accomplish that, better late than never. she didn't fade out into obscurity like so many 80 one hit wonders. Also worth mentioning was her collaboration with Rush on Time Stand Still- which is a truly great song from the prog rock power trio. I personally favor authenticity over commerciality anytime. Thank you so much for putting together awesome stories. Because I’m so old, I watched the very first broadcast of MTV. “Voices Carry” remains one of my favorite videos of all time. I was unaware of the backstory until now. I remember I cried the first time I watched “Voices Carry,” and I would shout to my sister to come watch it every time it aired. Today, when I hear this song, it’s a gut punch. I can’t wait to share this video with my husband, who is my high school sweetheart. We grew up watching MTV and listening to The Cure, Ministry (since their early years), The Smiths, Et. al. In the early years of MTV, alternative musicians had airtime. I can clearly remember watching the Clash, Kate Smith, and the Cure. Unfortunately, as the years progressed, MTV focused on main stream music, and my husband and I had to watch 120 Minutes to see the bands we followed.

For their last several years, maybe even a decade although I actually was not aware of it when they stopped showing music videos cuz I'd already given up on them completely... but for that last several years, 120 Minutes was the only time of the week that was worth watching.
I distinctly remember that it was on that show that I was introduced to Liz Phair via the video for Never Said, which was a perfect pop song and should've been a huge hit. But her label didn't promote that (her first) album beyond making that video, so I never heard it on the radio, and the regular rotation on MTV was just awful. That first album, Exile In Guyville, was simply outstanding, one of the very best of what turned out to be a very good decade for music. But I digress!
So yeah, 120 Minutes was our last bastion while it lasted.
Voices Carry to me is a very honest and haunting song that addressed a topic that hadn't really been dealt with in a song before and was something many woman could identify with. She opened my eyes to the fact that there were toxic relationships between lovers and also made me realize this behavior could go on in other kind of relationships such as between friends and between parents and children. For me it rang true and was a startling realization. Thank you Aimee for writing this song.
Aimee Mann has always been one of my most favorite musicians, and I feel like she is woefully underrated. Thank you for this.
I first heard ‘til Tuesday on March 15, 1985 when they opened for Hall and Oates. I still have the faded ticket stub in a box. When they played Voiced Carry, the hair on my arms stood up and I just KNEW that was gonna be a big hit! That summer on vacation, I started hearing them on the radio. 38 years later, we are still talking about that haunting refrain and the raw emotion of that outro… I was 16 then and it is still one of my favorites at 55+!
I was a young teen when this song came out. I immediately loved it and I honestly think it empowered me to NEVER get into relationships like that and, if I found myself in a situation like that (which I did once for a short time) to get the hell out and don’t look back. This song was really influential to a lot of women no matter what their age. Thank you, Amy! ❤

I loved Aimee Mann’s voice since the first time I heard Voices Carry. Radio tried to “kill” this song by all the constant repetition… I found the song again in 2002 and remembered her magnificent voice. And then I found What About Love! God, what a song!! Aimee Mann’s voice was (and still is) OH SO UNDERRATED!
She’s one of the most phenomenal singers ever!
I saw her perform at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit in 1995 and she performed Voices Carry in its usual form at the end of that show. Her solo work is tremendous. She’s my favorite songwriter of the last 30 years.
There's no question that Aimee Mann is truly a talented woman in her own right...I had endured an abusive childhood myself and this song brought me a sense of inner strength to not only overcome my tormentors then, but anybody else who even tried to subdue me later in life. So thankful for her bringing this song to the masses ❤
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are by far my favorite band of all time. I saw them in 1985 in suburban Chicago at Poplar Creek with Til Tuesday opening up for them. What is still etched in my mind till this day is Amy's voice echoing all over the venue with Voices Carry. It was amazing. I was just 20 years old, but I knew that night was special

I met Aimee Mann when she played at city winery. I was working and had an opportunity to talk to her tell her that voices carry helped me find strength to walk away from the toxic relationship I had with my family. It’s a beautiful song and I still cry when I hear it.
I've always loved the construction of the chorus. The first chorus is just Aimee. The second, more...voices...come in, like as support. The final choruses just seem to ROAR with the subdued anguish of the first two. Brilliant writing and production!

I love Aimee Mann and she was an amazing talent. The fact that the Canadian Prog Rock Trio Rush had her guest appear and sing on their 1989 Time Stand Still single just shows how good and respected she was as a musician. She still makes that Rush song sound great to me. And I cannot remember them ever asking any other artist to guest appear on a studio album. Great memories! She is a pretty good bass player too.
Let's talk about how incredible this album is sonically. Especially Voices Carry the song... it's masterfully tracked, mixed and mastered. Just incredible when you consider it was all to tape. This album is amazing.

I loved the video that went with Voices Carry, especially the end when she stands up in an audience shouting the song and the guy is so embarrassed. I never realized it was about abuse until I saw that video. This is definitely one of my favorite songs.
Til Tuesday are one of the 80s' most underrated bands. As much as I adored the "Voices Carry" single (and still do), their debut album was just okay for me. Then they released "Welcome Home", one of that decade's most unfairly overlooked albums, and the even more personal "Everything's Different Now", and it was such an impressive leap. Aimee was key for that progression, because she handled most of the songwriting for those two albums. And here's the thing : her last solo albums are some of her finest, especially the Grammy-winning "Mental Illness" released in 2017. You can't say that from many artists. Thanks for highlighting this true 80s classic song !

But between the videos heavy rotation and my older cousin’s influence, I grew to really love this song and it’s meaning. Great background reporting on Amy Mann and the history of the song. I saw her in concert at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London in 1994. There was an awkward moment when she started a song and then stopped saying ‘F… it, I’ve forgotten the words’ The audience cheered, gave her a massive round of applause and she smiled ‘ and said you people are so understanding’ Bit of adjustment and then carried on. Great performer and came across as genuinely nice to everyone. I was introduced to her music by a girl I was heavily involved with in the late 80’s and our split up was acrimonious and tearful. For years the song ‘Believed you were lucky’ always touched a nerve as I felt that is how our relationship was.
She didn’t disappear! She has been and, as far as I know, still is creating music. She’s awesome.

I remember seeing her play with Michael Penn at Cafe Largo in the mid nineties. They both sounded fantastic and she was very friendly and open to talk to. I remember asking her what she had coming up and she mentioned something about a movie centered around her songs. I had no idea that was to become Magnolia. Great work as always professor!
Great job, Adam! Did not know about her early childhood trauma. So glad you covered the years following Voices and Boston and her fight for creative independence. Some of her solo work, Bachelor No. 2, Lost in Space and, of course, the Magnolia soundtrack are so beautifully expressed, lyrically and melodically. One of my favorites.

When I first heard this song in 1985 as a 24 year old college student, I felt her pain. I grew a long rat tail and played Voices Carry frequently for a few years as I had my own turbulent youthful romances. It's a powerful song by a true artist, Aimee Mann.

There was a girl I went to school with, who had her hair done like this. One day she was working as a checkout clerk, and I just couldn't take my eyes off of her, wondering if she was in trouble, and needed help. She looked up at me a couple of times and to this day I wish I had said something. I'll be 50 tomorrow and I hope I was wrong. Years later I got into an actual abusive relationship myself after being raised by abusive parents. Glad I got out.

I'm afraid you were right about the checkout girl... it's heartbreaking when you can tell about something like that, but cannot do anything about it, really... but you can look at it as if she was supposed to be haunting you to ultimately give you the strength needed to leave a toxic situation... I'm 52, dealt with a toxic relationship, and a few haunting visions myself... funny thing is: sometimes I've received more genuine human interactions from checkout ladies, than from friends... most of all I'm so grateful music is always there for me... I absolutely LOVED this song, back in the day, as well as the video! Aimee's lyrics just pulled at my heart strings, and the instrumentation in the song itself was just surreal. SO many wonderful things about this song. I was delighted years later to hear the song 'Coming Up Close', which I feel was definitely one of their best and SO underrated.

I was in the Air Force when this song came out, I come from a physically abusive childhood, saw my mom being treated horribly by some of her relationships throughout the 60's through the 70's, I recognized within the song the suppression & denial required & expected from the victims of abuse & trauma perpetrated by so called "loved ones" & family, while being very aware to staying silent in order to keep the voice of truth from carrying out into the world drawing the "wrong" kind of attention from the outside world.
This song was a catalyst to unfreeze all that fear & self-loathing buried deep in one's soul, the kind of fear that twists & distorts the psyche. This song put a very visible crack in the facade of perfection that was very mainstream in those golden days of our society. Where it was a man's world w/ women & children expected to put on a happy face in order to conceal from the outside world all the torture going on behind the veneer of god-fearing decent people.
It was imperative to keep what was happening behind the walls of our house from ever being discovered by neighbors, teachers, friends, church, & family for fear of scandal where the victims would be called liars, possessed by demons, & the list was endless. The abusers always got away with their behavior & if some trouble did occur that aroused suspicion causing somebody to spend & few days in jail to dry out, when he got out & returned home everybody paid the price for bruising his ego & pride. So it was just easier to smile & hide the belt & switch marks on our body's & deliver our best Southern manners to the outside world & keep the curtain tightly drawn shut hiding the truth that was occuring behind those walls of our personal Hell from any prying eyes.
Watching the video on MTV was a tonic of sorts that eventually led me to facing my horrible childhood & finding therapy & support.
Unfortunately I am the only survivor of those days. I can't help but wonder if I had not been gay & which led to being thrown into the street at age 16 & told to never come back because of Jesus thinking I was a disgusting pervert, mind you I was a sexual virgin until my early 20's in the Air Force, so I never quite understood why Jesus was so mad at a virgin gay teenager that deserved to be disowned & thrown away, but that was the early 1980's for ya.
I've been on my own ever sense. The others all died from addiction issues. I could never go back home, so I truly believe that being thrown away ultimately saved my life, everybody that stayed behind all died. "Voice's Carry" touched my unspoken trauma & gave permission for people to acknowledge their secret pain. I think God moves through artists & I believe for myself that Aimee Mann was put on this Earth to provide that catharsis for me & others. I'm not saying she's a prophet, but she did put a huge light onto the underbelly of how some relationships can be devastatingly toxic & that one can choose to stand up & say enough, no more, let our voices carry, we deserve to be heard, we matter, & we all deserve genuine authentic unconditional love.
Thank you Aimee Mann, I still cry hearing the song, but my tears are no longer from recognizing my hidden pain, but now they are tears of compassion, forgiveness, & gratitude!❤

Once I came into the knowledge of Santana Dharma & Kashmiri Shiavism, I dedicated my life to Lord Shiva & Shakti where I found the profundity of the Vedas & the ancient Dharma of Tantra practiced through Kriya, I came to realize how Christianity was sourced from an amalgam of previous ancient Dharmas. The dying god man motif, the consumption of God's flesh & blood, selfless service to all mankind, devotion to God through all things & actions performed, I found peace & was able to rid myself of my pain & sorrow. 10 years of wandering the Himalayan mountains as a renucient monk where I had my first personal experience of Lord Shiva & Shakti. My Guru sent me back to the US to live once my personal breakthrough occurred to live as a householder, but still I remain a renucient in Spirit. I have created a successful existence where I am capable of continuous Spiritual practice & living as an example of Dharma, I live quietly & in peace, I focus my existence on being dedicated to living in Selfless Service. It's clear from the way you speak that you're on a level well beyond "recovery" - it's a shame that things have to be that bad for some of us, but the fact is that if we do the work, we can not only come out the other side healthy, but we can actually be ahead, in that we can carry forward with us the kind of empathy and compassion that makes a good and giving nature even more accessible, and that can be difficult to attain without originally suffering. You said what I've been trying to articulate when people talk about "how great" those days were. They weren't so great, they were huge populations of people living a lie in fear, in suppression, trying to be some perfect (or at least "normal and functional") version of what society expected. Don't admit the abuse, the addiction, or the sadness, or if you do you will be shamed and outcasted. It was a lonely, confusing time for me, thinking it was just my family that had issues. These days we aren't keeping quiet and keeping things suppressed like we used to, people must face the uncomfortable truths more often that have ALWAYS been there. This is what the people I know that want to return to those days really mean, they don't want to live in a world where people make them uncomfortable with their honesty, for a myriad of reasons. I agree music is a spiritual experience, it changed my life many times, and feels otherworldly. I'm so impressed with the work you've done and how you've persevered and succeeded in life. It's truly amazing what you've achieved, especially after living through the days where sexuality was shamed and people were harmed, I'm really proud of you, even though I don't know you. Thank you for sharing your beautiful story! ❤

Thank you for the backstory of this amazing song! I never misunderstood the lyrics, but was deeply impressed by the message of this song. I was expecting Tell Tuesday to become a bigger influence in the music industry, and now I understand better why this didn't happen.

“Everything’s Different Now” album is absolutely brilliant and even though it was released as a Til Tuesday album, for all intents and purpose it was actually Aimee’s debut solo album seeing as she mainly completed it on her own after the dissolution of the band. Each and every track on “Everything’s Different Now” is a masterpiece. The album is stunning in its beauty and also in its honest and emotional telling of Aimee’s heartbreak over the ending of her relationship with musician Jules Shear which is the running theme throughout the record. A very underrated masterpiece of a record and one deserving of much, MUCH more recognition.

I loved Aimee Mann’s voice - Love in a Vacuum, Voices Carry - those really take me back. She also adds something special to Rush’s Time Stand Still.
I always enjoyed how the Live shows would insert Aimee via prerecorded video.

PS - they initially wanted Cyndi Lauper, then Chrissy Hynde (of the Pretenders).
I think Aimee's "softer" take than the "rasp" sometimes used by Cyndi or Chrissy worked much better with Geddy's voice.

Her version of Leonard Cohen's "Avalanche" is my favorite.
She's the only bass player to ever appear on a Rush studio album other than Geddy. Of course her appearancs wasn't playing bass, but it's still true

Im glad you finally covered Till Tuesday. 1985 seems to have the most memorable new wave/post punk music of that decade. It had other great hidden gems like Perfect Way by Scritti Pollitti, Love &Pride by King and Small Towb Boy by Bronski Beat . Alyou you had Tears For Fears, A-ha, and Simple Minds making it big that year . Voices Carry is a very powerful and moving song. Aimee also has an unrated solo career and I love that song she did in Magnolia Save Me especially when the whole cast starts singing
My friends and I had completely forgotten Love and Pride until recently when the ghost of that song drifted through my memory triggered by _another_ memory of dancing at a club back in the day 😂! It's now on all our 80's playlists. I never hear about it otherwise so its nice to see someone else bringing it forward!😊
I am a huge King fan and seriously rate their second album Bitter Sweet from which Love and Pride comes. The Taste Of Your Tears is also a superb song. They owned a large part of 1985 in the UK with several appearances on TOTP. They are largely forgotten but were much better than the critics allowed- they were proficient musicians and could really play live. Paul King's solo album is a bit patchy though not bad. There is a four part interview at a museum in Coventry on You Tube where Paul King talks about the band. There are also a couple of other interviews on a radio station that are online. He has recently bought a farm in Valencia, as you do.

There was also Be Near Me by ABC and You Spin Me Round by Dead or Alive. In my opinion, the top three years of the 80s in order have to be 1984, 1983, then 1985.

Aimee Mann is my favorite artist of all time! Her voice is so unique and beautiful. Originally, I thought the Voices Carry chorus was "Even downtown was so scary!"

And now me being 50 years old and I'm looking back I can see what it's about. Of course is about physical abuse emotional abuse and even sexual abuse you just had to watch her look at that moment. "Voices Carry" is something else...heard it all Summer at the public pool over the PA, and, being a kid, only paid attention to the chorus and music...1985 was a fun year, and this song places me back there instsntly...
