After getting a quote of hundreds of dollars to just reprogram my Mini Cooper S key and even more for an additional BMW key fob, I have decided to tackle this myself. I'm not using any expensive tools and it's a complete DIY to program a new key or reprogram an existing key fob on your BMW or Mini Cooper. When your Mini Cooper or BMW key stops working and you have to get a new one, it could cost you hundreds for something you can do in at home with $50 worth of tools.

do you know how to program new key by using it?
I just purchased a newer Clubman S recently and had the same problem with the key not allowing comfort access (like my previous one), but not any more! Thank you for posting this video!!!! It works perfectly!
This vid is the bomb. I sourced the Autel OBD tool, and thanks to your advice, I downloaded the BMW app, which now works both for the MINI and our BMW X2. Advice to those performing this operation: Write down the steps after watching the vid a couple times, and you’ll have no problem.
Just performed this on a 2010 BMW X5 E70 that I recently picked up. Worked great, it was a bit difficult to follow with how fast you were going, but I was able to figure it out. Appreciate you putting this information out there.

Yes! This worked for me with a similar situation. I got a third key from mini and used this process to disable key 1 and use personalization number 1 for my new key #3. Comfort access working again. Thank you!

Hi. I bought a 2016 mini that came with only one key. I purchased a used key fob and I was trying to follow the steps on the same OBD II. I'm not being able to program this new key as it seems to be locked for a previous mini. The system only shows me the VIN the key is programmed to but it doesn't allow it to program on mine. Can you give any advice. much appreciated.
Hi. Wife lost her first two key fobs that came with 2016 Cooper Clubman. Found a tech who came out and made and re-programmed two new fobs and vallet keys. With-in a week our new puppy managed to chew them both! I ordered two new blank fobs from ebay and thought I could just swap out the chip, but he's damaged the unlock buttons on the chips. Could I use this to reprogramme the new chips in a new keyfob to allow remote access into the car and to start it? It still starts with old chip in new key fob shell, but no remote opening. Thank you.
can you please advise what model is the key fob that you have and what frequency? I accidentally put my key fob with the comfort access into the washer
I have a similar issue, I hope this will work because, I’m going to try it! Thanks for the vid and the insight. My 2 key’s buttons work, they unlock and lock. My issue is neither key functions with “Comfort Access” features do not work, i.e. Touch door, nothing! Again, hopefully this’ll work and I’ll save the rest of the money for the future. I have just resolved to place the money I save from a DIY vs “Stealership” I am going to put in a Jar and at years end use it for the service, I can’t perform! Cheers 😊

you bought the bmw license and it works for everything on the mini aswell or just certain things? I just purchased the ap200 to program my key for comfort access and also disable my old key that was stolen
That’s correct, once I activated it on my BMW Z4 as I was using it to program the injectors, it worked without issues on the Mini.
Edit: first license is free, so I didn’t have to buy any licenses

Thanks for posting this. I purchased the AP200 which is on the way. I have watched your video many times and the only thing I am unclear on is closing out of the program after verifying key personalization. At time index 4min 42 sec you state "...now you can exit out of the program, make sure you click correctly so it doesn't save anything extra..." Are you simply pressing ESC from this point on to back out of the program?

Hi, my remote control key fob, stop working i order a replacement remote at aliexpress, this dongle and app, would make the job? i have a r56 2013.
I don’t believe the ones from aliexpress of eBay work. The key has to be made for your car before you can register it.
Just a quick question. Will this device/program work to delete the stupid air bag light on my n55? Thanks.
If you have an airbag light there is usually an issue with the SRS system. You can’t just turn those off as far as I’m aware. However, you can troubleshoot it with this device and see where the issue is. If the issue has already been fixed, this device can clear the codes for you.
Would this work on a 2015 Mini as well? Just need to program a spare key..
The FOB you used was it an original from BMW/MINI or one of the cheap ones on Ebay or Amazon.

Hello I have the same problem but i only have one key. it is also number 3 will this work? I can not push the open and close butttons while its in the slot?
If it’s 3 and you have comfort access it should work. Also, if you have comfort access you don’t have to put the key in

I've gotten one ebay, but that's very much hit or miss. The best way is the dealer without programming, then you just program it yourself and it's not very expensive.

Does the comfort programming work for 2 keys? I have 1 programmed already for comfort but have a replacement key that I don't want to shell out the price the dealer wants to program it.
Yes, the comfort access works on the first 2 keys, the rest will be regular keys.

I have a 2010 Mini Base Camden. One of the key fobs is not working well. I can lock and unlock the doors but can not start the car. Can it be reprogramed or fixed? If not, where do you buy the key fobs. Any link where to buy those?

Bought an 07 Mini with no keys at all. Will I be able to program the inexpensive fob I might buy on Amazon with this? The dealer wants almost $250 and it has to come from BMW/Mini. I would also like to have more than one key. Each one is big $ from the dealer/Mini.
Answered via email, but in case others are wondering:
No, it will not be able to program keys from Amazon or eBay that have not been assigned to your car by the dealer. They have to create the key with your VIN and then you can program the car to accept it yourself. In your case, you wouldn’t have to take the car to them for programming.
If I purchase a second hand mini key from another vehicle, would this tool be able to program it to my mini?
If it has been programmed to another vehicle, this will not work as far as I understand.
So was that a new key? Not sure what you did. So your remote didn't open the doors but turned on the Ignition ok? What if your remote opens the doors but doesn't turn on ignition? Cheers.
I bought the car at auction, so it only came with one key that would start the car and you had to press the button on the key fob to open the doors. I reprogrammed the key to be in the top 2 which makes it the master key and allows the comfort mode to work again.
Could you explain what you did physically from 4:15-4:30? You put the key in, then take it immediately back out to click lock/unlock on the same key 4 times, then reinsert? I was able to assign my two keys personalization numbers of 1 and 2 but no luck on the comfort access working.
Yes, I inserted the key into the key slot, clicked it all the way in, took it out and then back in until it clicks.
Are your keys confirm access keys? Do you have the little button on your door handle? You must have both or it won’t work.
Thanks for replying! Yes, keys are comfort access that I got from dealer. The mini also has the comfort access rubber buttons on the door handles. Tried following your instructions again, but no luck. I'm convinced I'm doing something wrong during that same time frame. Should I be turning on the electrical systems before and after this with the start button too?
@@RyanRupel Unfortunately, I'm not sure what the issue could be. As far as I remember, I didn't touch anything else when inserting the key. You should get the normal chime of when you insert the key, but that's about it. Hope you figured it out and let us know. If I have time, I will try it again tomorrow to see if there was any additional steps I may have forgotten.
I have the same problem. My 2nd key can start the car when it's inserted into the slot, but Comfort Access does not work following these instructions.
hi. I still have my 2 original keys that can only start my car. I lost the comfort access and opening and unlocking the car. You mentioned in your video that I cannot delete my first two original keys. Can you please verify and if possible, can you please send me an instruction to reprogram my original keys. If your car had comfort access and you have the original keys, I don't think you have a programming issue, but more likely an antenna or some module issue. To reprogram your original keys, you'd want to identify them first to see what number they are and then re-assign that number to 2 and 3. They should activate them as default keys with all features. i have a r55 that i got recently and the key was working fine (just have one) and all of the sudden stopped opening or closing the car (i dont have the comfort acces) i changed the battery because is what everyone tells you to do but the battery was fine (changed it anyway) is this gonna work for reprogramming the key? (wich i gess is what it needs) or does it need anything else, it turns on the car tho
It’s hard to tell, the chip inside could have just died. This tool will tell you if it can detect the key.
i just checked on one of those autozone things that tells you if you need a new battery and wasn't giving any signal at all
@@gerardocornejo8114 Sounds like you have a key that went bad. If it was a programming issue, it would still register at one of those kiosks.
just one last question, if i get one key fog from ebay but a original one that was programmed for other mini, is it possible to program that new one to use with my mini with this obd2?
changed my key 4 to personalization key 1 but doesn’t work, blocked all the other fobs other than 4
I have an autel maxipro my friend has a 2010 mini Cooper he bought a key from eBay from a different mini i followed your steps and got fob 256 is defective can this be due to the fact that he got key from another mini?
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you can program keys that have another VIN already programmed in.

Nope. Only DCAN/ENET cable, MHD black or orange, OBDLink, THOR, UniCarScan, Veepeak OBDCheck BLE, Vgate iCar BT/WIFI or iLinker BT/WIFI.
Can i programm a complete new key with the Autel Ap200?
Not a complete new key, it has to come from BMW assigned to your VIN and then you can program it to the car.

I found my Keys in the trash. Whew. So I bought an Apple AirTag to track it at all times. Didn’t need to try this method. Mini was charging way too much I couldn’t afford it.

It should work on all Mini and BMW vehicles supported by the device (pretty much anything past 1996, but check the list on their website)

So I'm understanding you correctly, the "new key" was from another vehicle??? How many keys do you have, and where did they come from? Obviously, at least one key came with your Mini, right? Please clarify where the other keys came from.
It's kind of complicated and depends on the car. You cannot take a used key from ebay and register it. It has to be already on the vehicle's VIN to program it.
@@SimpleCarGuy: Okay...so you're not programming the key per-se. The key is specific to your car (one of the ten that are allocated to your VIN) and it comes from the factory/dealership preprogrammed to START the car. All you are doing is simply activating the *wireless* remote features and keyless entry functions, correct?

If that's the case, you don't need a scanner to do this. There is a regimen of remote button presses you can do to achieve the same thing.

The instructions are bad. Reading some of his other comments, he means to insert the key in and out of the slot 2-3 times. First with the key you want to copy FROM. Hit continue then you insert the key that you want to copy TO.
what if only one door works beforehand, will this help?
Depending on what the issue is. If the key is programmed to valet only, then you can reassign it to first 2 positions to make it work. If the door module is at fault, this won’t do anything.
@@SimpleCarGuy I believe I have the original key (bought it used), but only the passenger door comfort access works, so my guess is the door module.
@@indecisive999 That does sound like it. If it was the other way around, I'd try programming, but there is no way it would be just passenger side.

Great video man, question: Can you copy (Program) a MINI Key? you go thru the steps in how to restore functions to a fob but not how to copy.
I contacted AUTEL and they said it cannot be done for a MINI, Their answer was:
"This device does not program European keys, you will have a look into the IM608".
I just want to make sure before I buy this Product.

If the key is already assigned to the car you can program. Otherwise you will not be able to as it can only be done by BMW in Germany.
So my key fob just died and I got a new one. I still have my key. Just need a new fob to be able to lock and unlock the car. I'm guessing this autel will help me program it. I am going to look into it now because I'm not going to spend hundreds programming it if I can avoid it.

I saw your video on programming the key for for your Mini.
I recently lost one of my keys to my Mini Countryman and was able to get a spare key from from my brother who had a spare one from his old mini that he no longer has but found this key in his house.
I’m wondering if I’m able to program this spare key the same way you were able to program your key for the comfort access.
I’m trying to avoid paying the dealership $600 for a new key.

I can’t answer for sure, but it might have to be reset by the dealer first. I do know that if you order a key for you car at the dealer (without programming that they will charge $200 for) you can then program it to the car. Unfortunately, I’ve learned that it really depends on how the key was set up and if it was locked to the VIN or not etc.
No, you cannot. These Comfort access keys are "Locked" to the vehicle. They have an ISN (Password) that is stored in the key and the vehicle. The only way you can unlock and use an old key is to have the complete EEPROM file from the original vehicle, so that the tool knows how to reset the used it.
The programmer he is showing is not really PROGRAMMING the keys. His key is already learned. All he is doing is disabling lost keys so the new key he had ordered will have full comfort access features. BMW/Mini will only let 2 keys work with proximity on the vehicle at one time. His key was already starting - by inserting it into the slot - and the remote was functioning.
Can the device program new key fobs?
It can as long as the key isn’t set to key number 256, that indicates that the key is invalid. I got 2 keys from eBay and was only able to program one of them.

My friends Mini Cooper won’t turn on it starts but, won’t click over and he was told when u replace a battery it has an anti theft lock to it so if u replace the battery and try and start it it’ll think it’s being stolen. So my good friend has to reprogram it for it to completely turn on and get it running again. That’s crazy! 😂
I have not heard of that happening when replacing the battery, that is crazy indeed!

Do you get an error? Does the car register the key at all? Does the software see the original key?
my car was stolen, then recovered. the key was taken with the car but when car was recovered i did not get the key back

Just to save someone money
don't buy this to programe a brand new key to your car because it will not work, you will get an error how i got on my mini and on my bmw 1 series with 2 brand new keys with same frequency

There are many reasons. The main reason for me is that it’s an amazingly fun car to drive. It handles like a dream through twisties and bring s a smile on my face every time I drive it.
I got a bmw 550 and a Z4 as well and it’s a tough choice deciding which to sell right now.
