I started getting these codes the day after I had my oil changed. Sure enough, the oil change place forgot to reconnect the hose under the hood. You saved me a trip to the mechanic. Thank you!
Thanks for this.... my shop replaced the whole assembly a few years back on my 2000 Echo. Hundreds of dollars. Also replaced gas cap w an aftermarket cap -- that's been OK. The car is pretty low miles for its age (180,000) but runs very well w some TLC (just replaced an injector and the MAF). Hi John, I bought an Echo 2001 for my daugther and the car have these 3 codes. I will check everything during the week ends. Thanks for your great video and your good tips!
I have all 3 codes, got to the 2 min mark and remembered that my echo had a recent service. Paused video, went to check and there it was, a disconnected hose. Hope that fixes the problem. Great video, thanks you very much.
You may have just saved me $500+ for my '04 Echo. I'm going to Nappa to get a 5/8 heater hose tonight. I'm excited to get this sorted. I'll change the purge hose and gas cap while I'm at it. At a fraction of the cost, I'm more than willing to do so.
Hey, another member of the 2004 Echo Club! Good luck with yours. When getting new tires put on mine tomorrow and I think I'm going to have them look at the EVAP line at the same time.
I have a 2001 Toyota Highlander Limited and I had the same codes popped and after seeing this video I found the disconnected vacuum line right behind the air box. Thank you for pointing this out.
Thanks dude! I’ve only been driving for a year and a half and you’ve saved me some money $$$ I really appreciate you and your help! - A great full teenager!
AWESOME! John,I have a Lexus Ls 430 2001, My engine light came on.I took it to the mechanic today the codes was P0441,P0446 ,P0440. He told me it would be $2800,to repair after watching your video i'm not sure. Thank You!
Where are all the J.S.’s of the World. I stopped going to dealerships because I kept getting robbed. That’s when I started doing my own cars. It’s nice to see a guy that has his own shop and is doing well. Great video.
Awesome video. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experience. I have a 2004 Echo that is giving me a code p0442, and I'm betting I have a loose hose underneath the rear just like you showed here. This video will save me a lot of money! Thank you again. I'll definitely let my friends and relatives around San Diego know they should check your place out if they want an honest mechanic.
Thank you, John, for the diagnosis and the repair guidance. I had this precise combination of codes on my 2000 Echo. After watching your video I tightened my gas cap, looked under the hood and found the breather hose was disconnected so I reconnected that, and then, for good measure, lay down on a piece of cardboard to check that little bit of hose back near the canister. That looked fine so hopefully my check engine light will go off shortly. The car had been running fine anyway but it's always a concern when that light comes on.

Had the P0440, P0441, and P0446 codes and it was the line directly above the one being tapped on at the 1:56 mark that had come loose from the air filter housing. Has a green capped test port and label on it back towards the firewall. Reconnected and cleared the codes. All is good.
Thank You John for ur knowledge but most importantly UR HONESTY. Blessings are urs & ur Family 👪. Keep up the Great Work P.S. Heaven called said an Angel fell from the sky told them I found you on You Tube😁🙏🙏🙏
Thank you!! Because of you, we were able to fix it without taking it in. I recently had an oil change and they didn't reattach the hose. I'm sure you saved me some money! and for sure some time!!
John thank you so much for this video! I went to a local mechanic and the hose wasn't even connected and the house for the filter wasn't even screwed on tight. Hopefully this corrects the problem!
After watching this video I’m finally convinced I need a new fuel cap. My Tacoma has been throwing p0440 for weeks and my gas cap also has some tiny cracks on the gasket. I will be ordering original Toyota part ASAP
thank you for posting this video!!! following your steps, I fixed the cell due to cracked hose by engine and mechanic said to replace cat and quoted me 1200+. again ty!!
Thanks for the helpful video. I have been battling these codes for a while and thought I would have to replace gas cap/charcoal canister process. After watching the video I went and checked the breather hose and it was disconnected, codes are now gone, thanks!
I am checking this out on my 2005 echo this weekend. I've spent $500 already at shops chasing this or that possible solution. If all it takes is some 5/8 heater hose to fix and not the charcoal canister, that is amazing.
Sir, Thank you so much for your quick reply .. you just came on time, right on the money.. my Sienna has the same codes.. I am a DIY man.. l love to fix my car, and your Excellency came across on time.. I do really love the way you explain. I am an Assistant Professor and Filmmaker.. I am thinking now if I could use your shop while my producer is scouting for a location for two scenes in my upcoming feature.. I assure you, if it's in my hands, I'll honor you an OSCAR in teaching. Once again, HATS LIFT UP to your Excellency Sir. Thank you.
John-We did a smoke test on my 02 Echo today and smoke came out near gas cap. We replaced the cap with an OEM Toyota, and also noticed long section of vapor canister hose was loose and had dry rot. Replaced it with 5/8 heater hose. My mechanic wants to know why the Toyota Echo has 2 small holes at the top of the filler tube. One appears to lead to throttlebody and other to the air cleaner. Are these factory installed? Can they lead to the P0440?
@@marshmower I ultimately did fix the entire issue, but after pretty much replacing the entire system. Replaced the vapor canister, filler neck, and purge solenoid; but they weren't the culprit. One of the (2) hoses connected to the purge solenoid wasn't sealing properly, throwing a P0441 and P0446. Clamp/Zip tie tight. Most importantly, the Factory OEM Toyota/Lexus gas cap is a no go. Mine went bad after a year. Get a standard Duralast cap from Autozone, $10. They seal much better. Codes went off and stayed off.
Thanks for pointing it out I have two hose disconnected from the EVap purge valve and air cleaner box could you please point me which the right hose are connected?
Hello, thanks for the great video. I’ve got all 3 of these codes on my 01 Echo. Only 108k miles. My gas cap does have some cracks around the seal. The 2 hoses you showed in the video are still connected and look good. If I replace the gas cap, do I have to have a dealer or shop reset the codes so the check engine light will go away? Thanks again.
You are explaining my problem exactly with my 2002 Camry se. I wish you said the size of hose you used at the end a little slower. My car is 4 cyl but used gas as if it were 12 cyl. I am so desperate I might make the 800 miles to see you. If somebody caught the size of hose he used at the end of the video, please respond!
Good stuff sir, thank you. I recently got a 2001 Celica GTS recently (fun little car) and before long I got the dreaded check engine light. What codes came up? Wouldn't you know it - P0440, P0441 and P0446. And, sure enough, the gas cap isn't OEM. It's some cheap POS gas cap. After I fill up at the pump, it doesn't tighten right. That has to be the problem. I ordered the Toyota OEM gas gap, it's coming this week. And if, like in the video, it's more than one problem, at least I will have solved the most obvious one.
@@JohnSadlersAutoRepair That is nice of you. I really appreciate your video. I just found my 2002 Toyota highlander showing the same 3 codes. It otherwise drives perfectly. I hope that the problem in my car is that simple.
@@JohnSadlersAutoRepair Dear John, I think that I did find the problem today. I was so happy about it, I actually uploaded my first UA-cam video about it. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/rSSzFkLzeZs/v-deo.html
Hi John. The part you're holding in your hand at 3:30 into the video: Mine went bad. I have a 2001 Toyota Echo. Can this part be purchased separately or do I have to buy an entire charcoal canister. I believe it's called an evap canister check valve or shut valve. I can't find it anywhere online. Thank you.
Great video John. I have the same car. Wish there were more shop owners like you where I live. I don't have any codes, and no check engine light on mine, yet the EVAP Not Ready stays shown on the hand held scanner.
Midnight Ryder CHECKING MONITOR STATUS 1. Introduction The Monitor Status (Mode 06 data) allows the OBD scan tool to display the monitor result, test value and test limit (malfunction criterion). A problem in the emission-related components such as the catalyst, EVAP and thermostat can be found by comparing the test value and test limit. The monitor status information is included under Decoding Mode 06 Data. The ECM (PCM) monitors the emission-related components. After the monitor, the ECM stores the monitor results and test values. The monitor result indicates whether the component is functioning normally or not (PASS or FAIL). The test value is the value that was used to determine the monitor result. When the test value is inside the test limit, the ECM determines the component is functioning normally (PASS). If the test value is outside the test limit, the ECM determines the component is malfunctioning (FAIL). So next hook up the scanner and go to Mode 6, you will find one or more failures. There will be some number like Tid and Comp id, write down the failures and I will Decode it for you. John
+john sadler First, thank you. Where are you located? We're in Madison WI. How do we find a good mechanic! Turns out it wasn't the charcoal canister for our 2001 Toyota Echo. Code po420. Meineke mechanic said pipe was leaking at catalytic converter or converter needed to be replaced. Replaced and soldered piece of pipe, take from there. Engine light has not come back on. We are planning to buy new car after Christmas. If the converter ultimately needs replacing, we don't want to spend $900 to do so (trade will come in at $880 - 1000). Can we go a month without replacing without damaging engine? Avg 120 mi / wk. And thanks for your honest work here on UA-cam.
+Michael O'Rourke Your welcome! You did a good job by fixing the leak first, the code means it's not as efficient as it should be. When you have an exhaust leak in the pipe it can set that code. You Will Not damage the engine by driving it with the light on. The only way you will damage the converter is if the light starts blinking and you continue to drive it. Hard to find a good mechanic, I'm in Spring Valley, Ca.. You can go to Alldata.com and I think they have a section to put a zip code in to find a shop. Then pick 2 of them and give them each a small job to do or just get a few estimates and see if they are close or way different. You can check them out on Google also, I always make sure the mechanic will look me in the eye, has a clean shop and shows me the old parts with a written parts and labor warranty. John
Hey john, Great video. I have a Lexus es300 2002 p0441 only code. Replace the gas cap from a toyota dealership also bought and change the canister and purge valve and still showing the code. My mechanic is wanting to change the valve duty vacuum switching aperantly two of those. I don't know what to do. Help please
camilo11315 FIX posted on May 2, 2007 8:57:45 AM Here is some info I found on IATN website, there is a procedure about 10 pages long. Email me at sadler98@sbcglobal.net and I can send you the factory test procedure. Lots of people guessing and changing parts. You can use a 9 volt battery to activate most of the evap solenoids. See my video on dynamic testing for egr failures on Nissans. Hello Asian techs: The MIL light on this Highlander was caused by somone else removing the air cleaner canister and pulling off the vent hose from the tank. We've seen this hose off before, but we hadn't seen this vehicle before, so we didn't think of looking there. Thanks to Eigil Hillerup for hitting on this right off. Also, thanks to Dan Pratt, who sent us the Toyota TSB, which greatly streamlines the diagnosic process, and to Michael Grivon, Matt Eisen, Victor Semenyuk, Stephen Inoue (who pointed out that Toyota covers the evap system under its 8-80k emission warranty) and Phillip St. George. Stephen confirmed that Toyota doesn't sell the VSV separately from the canister--but, one might gather a collection of used VSV's and color match the one that mounts on the canister. Thanks again!
I have error codes 4401 and 4406 on my camry. This happened while i was driving and hit a hubcap on the road triggering the check engine light. Im thinking it has something to do with the vacuum lines having a leak or becoming disconnected. My problem is though that I am having a hard time finding diagrams for the lines and figuring out where everything is located underneath. Would you know any online places having the diagrams for this sort of thing or what I should even look up?
@@JohnSadlersAutoRepair I'm talking to one about the air cleaner Box the white 1 it's white 1 it's in the front bumper connect to the intake hose but I checked the vacuum's cinnamon it's so in the front and I found out that the purge valve it's not clicking it's not working so I went to the junkyard and a grab another 1 and I'm about to swap it and test it I asked the dealer that it says Only to collect dirt and lower the intake noise

The 2 hoses you showed in the video are still connected and look good. If I replace the gas cap, do I have to have a dealer or shop reset the codes so the check engine light will go away?
Thanks again.
Hi Aaron, check with your local auto parts store. Orielys and Auto Zone check and clear codes for free.
Awesome Brian!!!
I hope I can find a mechanic like you out here in LA, CA. Good video
+JO3haNsum Thanks !!!!
Superb !"
Best video out there on you tube by far !
Thank you Good Shepherd !
Hi John, I have the same 3 code on my 2001 toyota sequoia, I will check it out this weekend. thanks for the video. Subscribed

Good honest mechanic, god bless you.
Thanks Joseph! God bless you too!
@@JohnSadlersAutoRepair That is nice of you. I really appreciate your video. I just found my 2002 Toyota highlander showing the same 3 codes. It otherwise drives perfectly. I hope that the problem in my car is that simple.
@@josephdewuhan Let me know what you find out Joseph
@@JohnSadlersAutoRepair Dear John, I think that I did find the problem today. I was so happy about it, I actually uploaded my first UA-cam video about it. Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/rSSzFkLzeZs/v-deo.html
Nice job on the video. Excellent explanation John. Gonna try checking under the car.
+Jerseydave Thanks !
Wow ! thanks a lot john, fixed my problem ! it was the breather hose on the housing it was just hanging off!
ibanez1403 Your Welcome !!
Thank you.
Way to go John!
Thanks !!!
Here's a tip, aerosol silicone lubricant will make rubber hoses slid on a lot easier.
Thanks for the info, and thanks especiality for your honesty.
Your very welcome Moises!!!
Thanks for the video. i have these codes showing in my 2006 Sienna, will check those points you mentioned.
You're welcome Raymond! Please let me know what you find out
Great video John. I have the same car. Wish there were more shop owners like you where I live.
I don't have any codes, and no check engine light on mine, yet the EVAP Not Ready stays shown on the hand held scanner.
Midnight Ryder Thanks! There are a few reasons for that, let me do some research and get back to you. John
Midnight Ryder
CHECKING MONITOR STATUS 1. Introduction
The Monitor Status (Mode 06 data) allows the OBD scan tool to display the monitor result, test value and test limit (malfunction criterion).
John
Wow! Exactly what I was looking for. Godsend...!
Your very welcome Joe!!!!!
Slather that "replacement" hose with silicone grease inside and out. Install with a couple clamps. Nice video
Fixed my problem. Thanks. Hose was loose.

Your welcome Nuno! How did you car come out with the new tps? Hope you found a better job already also. John
Thanks, I forgot to plug in the EVAP cables to the air filter after I changed it!
Your welcome Aaron!
We done sir. Great service center.
Thank you
Nice and simple explanations
Thanks Jose!!!
i have a 2001 Echo, and i just recently had that same problem, and had the whole vapor canister replaced. Not sure if i was taken for a ride or not.
Well done, thanks for value info, I appreciate the way you try to solve the housing change instead to buy a new canister for you customer 👍👍👍👍
Your very welcome Adrian !!!
So cool John. We'll take this info with us to auto repair!
+Michael O'Rourke Glad I could help !!!!
John
+john sadler You are the best. We wish you were close by, because we've had one trial after another with mechanics. Awesome Dude!
Thank-you for this John. Excellent.

Hey john,
Great video.
I have a Lexus es300 2002 p0441 only code.
Replace the gas cap from a toyota dealership also bought and change the canister and purge valve and still showing the code.
My mechanic is wanting to change the valve duty vacuum switching aperantly two of those. I don't know what to do. Help please
camilo11315 Hi Camilo: Will look for some info on Monday for you, John

Here is some info I found on IATN website, there is a procedure about 10 pages long.
This video was so helpful for me!! Thank you!
Sarah Alexander Glad I could help Sarah!
I find lots of good diagrams on Google and Bing images. You want the Evap System.
I have these codes on my scanner for my 2002 Lexus ES300. Are the codes universal?
They have the same meaning, yes.
Not sure if the same issues for that model , I would look for sure though:)
I have a Camry 2000 V6 it has the same codes Does the broken air cleaner Box brings those code if it's broken
Can you send me a picture of it? johnsadlersautorepair@gmail.com
@@massesbulet ok, keep me posted how the purge valve works
Thanks John. very educated video. I have same three codes
