Just to toss my own two cents (and thanks) in, I had an engine replacement done months ago, and on getting it back every few hundred miles the truck would throw these same codes and sometimes a P0441. The shop couldn't figure it out, and I was reluctant to go messing with the hoses, though I suspected it was something related to them. I'm glad you show such a well lit tight shot of the proper hose placement, I used that as a guide to verify that my evap valve hoses were all kinds of in the wrong place, The truck sounded like a diesel at idle sometimes. Pretty sure it's as it should be now. Thanks!
Ive done the gas cap, roll over valve with seal (was cracked), and the charcoal canister. All factory Toyota parts. Still have codes. I can only find the bigger solenoid under the hood. I dont have the correct name for the round one. Was gonna try those next.
What happens if you reverse the hoses on the purge valve (VCV)? My "check engine" came on and the mechanic said it was the purge valve. He put on another one . I got home and looked at it. He reversed the hoses? I don't give a crap as long as no "check engine" light comes on. A week later it's back on. He replaces the purge valve again. I get home, sure enough the hoses are reversed. So I switched then back. 6 months later...no problems thanks to your video showing exactly the way the vacuum hoses hook up.
It will cause a constant vacuum on the fuel take and it will set a check engine light for “ purge flow during non-purge”. Glad you were able to verify the hose routing and fix it your self. Thx for watching my video.
Great video! Super helpful… Question: I clamped off the air inlet near the charcoal Box. Hooked up the smoke machine at the service port (green). Checked for smoke (engine off), smoke is coming out a lot maybe 2-3 inches below the gas cap near where the vent tube connects. I’m pretty sure its not the gas cap bc I’ve tried several OEM caps. I don’t see any damage to the filler pipe, no rust. Not sure whether this indicates I need to replace the fuel neck assembly or could it be something else? Any Thoughts?
One hose is just a regular rubber hose w/ a clamp and the bigger hose is a tube w/ a squeeze type connector. Hope that helps and I will try to show more in the videos to come. Thank you for your comment.

I have the same truck, same color, same year. But mine has a Toyota lock on the gas door that opens with the ignition key. Locking gas caps are way less secure.

Aaniyah Janna Grant it is possible to test w/ out a scanner but be very careful on manually testing the part. You don’t want to feed power to the ECM, you can burn a driver out in the ECM. You can test just the parts disconnected w/ a regular 9v square battery. Good luck.

Hello & thx for watching the video. The scan tool that was used is made by “Launch” is was a Launch x431 pro3. Is a android operated system. Is a really good tablet scanner buy it is a little bit slower than the snap-on scanner I have. The rollover valve is a big problem w/ cracking. Good luck.
Yes. You can get a 9v square battery and use little wire lead w/ alligator clamps. You can supply power and ground that way from the little battery to the sensors. Hope that helps you out.
Great Video, thank you from northern state. I have a 2000 Toyota avalon (with only 130k miles) happened last week when I cranked the engine just like the usual, after started up for about 30 second the engine started shaking like a missed fire. I managed to drive (check engine light flashing, engine hesitate, and lot of gas smoke from tail pipe) to Avanced Auto to have the engine code check up, it shows codes P0400, 0442 and 0446. I've checked information available online but none mention about the engine running rough like the condition I encountered. I also checked the canister (visual) and VSV on top of the manifold (clicking when jumped). Any idea or advice is greatly appreciated.
Check the Oil Control Valves/ VVT solenoids. On V6 engines they control each bank of cylinders. If the VVT solenoids gunk up, the timing on 3 cylinders will cause it to misfire, giving you the shaking engines, flashing engine light (WHICH UOU SHOULD NOT DRIVE) and smoke out of the tail pipe. Fortunately, the VVT solenoids are like $80 and super easy to replace
I have 2003 Tacoma 3.4 L v6 showing p0446. The shop replaced gas cap, fuel tank filler neck and hose, and canister assembly. p0446 still showing. They gave up. I am in Chandler AZ. Can you recommend a shop nearby? I wish I could drive to you to Tucson. But my plate expired.
I reset the OBD and drove around until everything passed except "p0442 pending and check engine light off" and rushed to the emission test site. The car passed the test. If the engine light turns on again I am not going back to the garage that charged me $750 but finally gave up with p0442 fault. Do you have any recommendation? I’ve had evap leaks for over a year smoke test showed nothing....i just put a small piece of tape over check engine light on dash...ba bye
NightMusic1 that always works for me. You probably don’t have a Evap, you might have a sensor that’s working electrically but not mechanically causing a Leak code. Unfortunately some people live in counties that required no engine or transmission codes that turn on the check engine light and all readiness monitors must be set in order for you to pass so you can buy your next year tags. Roli- Poli no, this evap problem doesn’t cause negative LTFT. It would just evap small leak detected where the fuel tank would not hold a negative vacuum becuz of the crack roll over valve.
Hello Art. I found out my fuel neck was leaking using the smoke machine so I changed it. Now am still getting 0440 and I tried using the smoke machine but the smoke won’t go thru. It feels like there’s pressure that won’t let the smoke flow. Any thoughts? Thanks
Chico Stick hook the smoke machine tube thur the EVAP green cap in the video. That tube goes straight to the fuel tank. If you can get smoke thur there then there is a blockage in that tube.
I have a P0441 code in my 04' Tacoma. When you did he blow test for the canister valve you used your computer to test/turn the valve on. If the engine was on would this close the canister valve like your computer did? It seems I can blow with no resistance with the engine on and off. Any help is appreciated!
Buy this tool if you don't have a bidirectional scanner. It will make life easier. You can actuate valves, sensors, etc with it. Much cheaper than a Power Probe.
I believe the valve has power supplying it at all times. You may be able to unplug the wiring connector on the valve, blow, then plug it back in, blow.
Wait a minute. If the job of the evap system is to capture and burn those vapors (burning gas vapors produces energy) in the engine, how is NOT performing that job (not burning the fuel) not going to effect gas mileage (which is a measure of energy management in an automobile). Or think of it like this: If you poked a hole in one of your cylinders so that the gas vapors could escape before being ignited do you think that would cause bad gas mileage? Of course it would. Same thing. (sort of)
theschuntz, hello. The average cost should be between $250-350 to fix at a auto shop. It depends on the shop labor rate, diagnostic charge and mark-up of the dealer part.
hey brother my 04 taco has been giving me a P0442 and I replaced the gas cap and the vacuum switch valve and I still have the same code coming up. What else should try??
Make sure it’s a factory fuel cap, also you can get a mirror and flashlight and check the roll over valve like in the video also check the evap hose from the fuel tank to the vsv, make sure there are no holes or splits in that hose. Good luck and let me know. Thank you for the comment.
@@SuperCamacho81 Did the Roll over valve look cracked? and the seal cracked? like in the video, Factory Gas Cap?. If you don't have access to a smoke machine then the next possible problem is the charcoal canister. You need to be able to pressurize the evap system and if you don't see any smoke, then the internal diaphragm in the canister is bad. The downfall of just replacing the part is it cost about $400.

Sniper, if you don't want to drop your tank, cut out an access panel in the bed of your truck. Modify the panel so that you can reuse it. Cover it with a bed liner lol. I did my old Ford F150 that way after 2 failed fuel pumps and valves on the tank.

my 2001 Tacoma 3.4 has a different setup. no rollover valve and my canister is under the hood. can I check those valves without a tool like that
Change the vsv valve by the canister and you are good to go around $30 Amazon

01 and lower years don’t have a roll over valve, 02 and above do. Hope that helps.

Were the LTFT on both banks reading negative teen numbers?
Roli- Poli no, this evap problem doesn’t cause negative LTFT. It would just evap small leak detected where the fuel tank would not hold a negative vacuum becuz of the crack roll over valve.

Yes I been smoking it thru the green valve. I tried blowing air by mouth and I can feel restriction. I wonder if the smoke clogged something ?

Buy this tool if you don't have a bidirectional scanner. It will make life easier. You can actuate valves, sensors, etc with it. Much cheaper than a Power Probe.

There is a conspiracy theory that the emissions code was deliberately done to eat up gas.

$1000 plus worth of work on a truck worth just a little more than that. Great diagnosis though.
Make it look easy until you have to buy a 2000 dollar scan tool or more.
