    Road noise is not great
    Power is not much
The rest about the Echo is truly amazing. We have one as a family back up. 4 door automatic cheap to run and vey fuel economical. Its like a motorcycle with 5 seats and a roof so that you do not get wet on rainy days. The space inside is impressive for a small car and the ride is nice as well.
One of the best cars Toyota ever made.

With the AC on and the radio on, road noise is lessened. Turn off the AC when passing or going up hill and you should see some more power.

@A&B and don't just hit the A/C button, flip the fan off entirely, as the alternator is also bogging down the engine a bit from having the blower on. Trial and error over the nearly 20 years now that I've had two in the family.
Rear window defroster also draws a lot. Both on at once means accelleration is even less than the normal 'that'll do' levels.
Also, if you've ever driven an old VW bug or an early non-turbo diesel VW, these things are a damn rocket.

Phantom096 "one of the best cars Toyota ever made"? How do you figure? Don't get me wrong I love Toyotas and own a 2019 rav4, 98 Supra, 97 Celica and a 2018 Corolla. I really don't see how the echo is one of their best cars ever made. I would say that about the Celica or Supra but definitely not this thing. The 3s gte and 2jz engines I think were and still are Toyotas greatest engines ever built.

My aunt bought it new in 2002 and when she passed away in 2005 it only had 6,000 mi so i convinced my dad to keep it and when my dad passed away in 2013 i inherited the lil bug. Hi my 2000 model just died a couple months ago because the gearbox went. I think it was a faulty MAF sensor that caused it to fail quicker. Was for a while having to drive using clutch to compensate for what the MAF sensor was doing. She managed 325,000. If I could afford to fix it I would. Here in Finland the cost of a second hand gearbox and mechanics time is just too great for my wallet just now. I find it almost heartbreaking as losing my Yaris Verso is like losing a loved member of the family :(

I purchased a 2000 Toyota Echo new the first year the Echo was available. Fantastic fuel efficiency! It's now 19 years old and we still drive it every day. This was a very affordable, basic vehicle that I really loved driving. I prefer vehicles with the display in the center (such as the Echo and Prius). I like that I sat up high and had a good amount of head room for a small car. We have driven this car across the country, in heavy snow storms, and for daily commutes. It almost never had any mechanical issues. I don't think we had to make any repairs (other than a couple of factory recalls) for the first 100,000 miles! Even in the next 100,000 miles the repairs have not been too bad (we did have to replace the tires. muffler, pipe to muffler, and replace lights in the dashboard...and the original CD/ radio/ tape place).

I've replaced the brakes 3x, tires 3x, and alternator (1x) .... finally replaced the exhaust last month. All of these are "wear parts" on ANY vehicle, so no big deal.

Toyota Echos have timing chains and replacing a timing belt in Canada is typically a $1400.00 ~ $1600.00 job. I would've bought an Echo but a cheap 2002 Rav4 came up and because of snow (and safety concerns) here in Canada I picked the Rav4 instead. Toyota's build quality is excellent, My Rav4 is 17 years old and still runs like a top! Although the 2002 Rav4 only has the 2.0 engine (150 hp) it still does pretty good. With the AWD system the Rav4 still gets pretty decent gas millage (22 mpg in winter) and the AWD is a real beast in the snow as well. The Rav4 still has the original exhaust even after 17 years and the exhaust is still as solid and rust free.
I did notice a crack just in front of the front door panel and noticed that Toyota used ABS plastic to make the fenders skin. Nice touch since lots of cars today have cheap door skins which start rusting after 5 ~ 6 years now.
Nice thing about this generation Toyota is I can also still work on the car myself.
Kudos to Toyota for making great cars that last forever!

The two door model is surprisingly roomy in the front. You can put the seats right back and with all that head room it feels like you are driving a much bigger car. And those big doors make getting in and out so easy. Much better than the four door model if you only have a family of two and don't use the back seat for anything but parcels.

I've had lots of different cars. Although I loved the old Volkswagens (2 Rabbits, 2 Sciroccos), muscle cars (two 69 Cougars), 2 Suzukis, my favourite (next to my 4Runner) has been this little 2005 Echo 4 door hatchback. I bought it because my 4Runner was killing me in gas cost. I figure I paid off the Echo in 6 year's gas savings compared to driving the 4Runner over the same interval. So, I only drive the 4Runner on summer camping trips now. I paid $4300 for the Echo 7 years ago and the only thing I've done to it is replace the rotors/pads and change the fluids (oil every 5000 km). It still looks brand new at 265,000 km and it runs perfectly. When i was buying a leather steering wheel from the scrapper, he told me they don't usually get Echos in their stock because no one wants the parts (i.e. they are seldom in the need for replacement engines and transmissions so there isn't much money in providing used parts). One of the dealer mechanics told me (I was buying a rubber door stop) he bought one for his daughter with over 300,000 km on it because he'd seen many of these engines go well over 500,000 km with no problems. Hey, AC, electric door locks, remote entry/alarm-what else do you really need? It's a bullet proof little car for commuting in. I can fit my bike in the back if I take off the front wheel. I have fit a mother, baby in seat, stroller and booster seat in all at the same time!. Might not be comfortable for driving 8 hours at a time (I'm over 6 ft), or colliding with a truck, but I would definitely buy another if this one ever got written off. I think I can go something like 650 km on a tank of gas! Yaris is essentially the same car with the same engine. Love these little cars.

With a tail wind in New Mexico, I was getting around 40 mpg on highway (solo passenger, 2 door, manual). I filled mine for less than ... 10 dollars! That was in 2001. Have to say, safety wise this car always scared me to crash, but turns out from experience it's a pretty safe vehicle. I ended up t boning an SUV while going 80mph on the freeway, sandwiched the whole front end and crushed part of the engine. But I was fine, have had slight back issues but walked away without any sort of injuries other than bruises. For $1600 and never having to open the hood other than scheduled maintenance, I couldn't say anything bad about this car.

Glad I found this video. I am looking at the Echo for the same exact reasons Anthony stated in the video. It's a simple econobox, has a timing chain, manual locks and windows, less things to go wrong with proper care and maintenance. I find it's harder to find the 4 door version than the 2 door coupe. I believe the Echo preceded the Yaris which was introduced in 2007. I drove the Yaris all over Costa Rica and will say it is one helluva car. I drove it through such extreme terrain (dirt, cobbled stone, mud, off-road). I was impressed.

Hilarious. You said you bought this 6 years ago for $1800. Now, same car goes for close to $5000. Insane car prices now.

That 1NZ-FE is a great engine. Long life, durable and easy maintenance. I have a 4-door Yaris S with a 5-speed. It's alter ego is the Echo.

Recently unmothballed a 2005 Echo, with bumper covers missing (replaced), refurbished computer, new engine mounts and cooling hoses ($2,350 so far). Replaced a 2014 Corolla which I totaled against a dead horse in an expressway in December 2018. It has 355k miles (571,300 km) and it runs extremely well even for relatively long distances. Only major mechanical job was a transmission replacement in late 2010 (5 speed manual). It has given me no worries for the last month or so that it has become (again!) my daily driver...

When my grandparents lived in prince Edward island and Nova Scotia years ago they had a small little light grey Toyota echo. It was a nice little car. We would go on long drives along the beautiful maritime canada coast.

I got a 4 door one for $1k with less than 130k miles on it. Asides from a busted taillight and minor scratches, the car is fine.

2002 Echo I have had it for 10 years now still works great no engine issues only check engine light was from the gas cap got old. And I had to change out the alternator. But has always been reliable. Want to give it some upgrades 😀 like power locks, new lights, new speakers...stuff like that
