The effects of migraine

  • About one in seven people live with what's ranked the second-most debilitating disease on the planet, right after back pain: migraine. Though the causes are unclear, migraine is a serious neurological disease that often runs in families. But the malady is not often taken seriously, in part because the headaches, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, dizziness, and a host of other symptoms affect three times as many women as men. Correspondent Susan Spencer talks with migraine expert Dr. William Young; Linda Porter, of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, about migraine research; Katherine Foxhall, author of "Migraine: A History"; and Cincinnati artist Priya Rama, whose migraine visions have become key to her art.

Chances are, if you've never experienced a migraine, you probably know a friend or a relative who suffers from it. It affects family, work, friendships. Migraine sufferers bear the guilt of not being able to function as part of society and being accused of "making excuses". It's not just a physical illness, it's a social illness. Thank you, CBS Sunday Morning, for shedding light on this topic.

It’s a horrible way to live, and I do honestly wish for death for relief. I’ve tried literally everything over the last 35 years, and the pain continues on. Thank you again for shedding light on this painful malady.

For many years I suffered from migraine headaches, I had worked for the US Air Force for a number of years as a military & civilian instructor. I discovered after a "final" retirement, my headaches were the result of stress. after leaving my position in the military my headaches stopped and I have not had another single one since. So STRESS is one factor that can cause headaches.

My dad has had migraines most of his life. He used to have to be taken to the ER and get a shot. It has gotten some better since he's gotten older. I have them too. Mine are mostly visual but I do get some head pain. I usually get weak after for awhile. The latest cause of my migraines is being on my phone too much. Now I use computer glasses and limiting my time on screen. Some foods like chocolate and caffeine will contribute to causing one as well as dehydration. Thank you for the segment. Nice to see someone has used their pain productively. Bless her.

      - this is interesting because I have found that caffeine can HELP my migraines. I don't drink coffee or soda - I'm generally a water drinker. And I have to catch the migraine very early but if I take excedrin and drink tea it seems to help. Also turning off lights, of course. And mushrooms in anything I eat can trigger me. My friends and family have learned to warn me of mushrooms in anything.

@@ebybeehoney I didnt know that about mushrooms. I eat alot of them. I should notice if it affects me. Someone also mentioned blood sugar issues might cause them too. I'm still looking into that. I've had lots of stress and not enough exercise with the winter so I'm wondering about that too.

I've called myself a "functioning migrainer." I have suffered for years. This ailment is truly disabling and hard to treat. Often times when a prescription works for a while and then it stops helping. The process is difficult and frustrating. It's very nice to see attention being brought to this disease. Being that it is the 2nd most debilitating illness hopefully it will bring more research and awareness to it.

For that reason I told my significant other we absolutely cannot have a gun in our household. Chemotherapy for curable breast cancer induced premature menopause and stopped the migraines. My doctor followed up with a hysterectomy. Men don't get pregnant, so would you trust a guy that you've just met that he's on birth control? He has 9 months to disappear should his birth control fail, condoms are safer because it's an obvious form of birth control and as a woman the pill is safer because it's something that you control yourself.
I know that male birth control is an option that should be available, but as a woman it's better to be safe than sorry.

It’s so frustrating that we still don’t have answers. I don’t have them nearly as bad as others do but I’ve had them at least once a month for the past 20 yrs. I can tell when an attack is coming on before the pain starts because I can’t remember words, I get very restless and anxious. Even simple words like “table” escape me. I have to say “this thing” or point to things. It makes me feel stupid and useless. The lack of research on migraines is a problem. I don’t want more meds, I want answers.

I've endured migraines all my life, even as a small child (I am 48 now). I had severe migraines 4 to 5 times a month, each lasting at least 2 to 3 days. I would miss at least 3 days a month for work. I got both of my daiths (inner ear piercings) done on June 24, 2019 out of desperation and it has cut my migraines back by 75%. I still occasionally get one, but its not near as severe nor have I missed work at all! I'm able to take regular over the counter meds (not the prescription Imitrex or Maxolt) and keep on working and it goes away. My ears (daiths) get "sore" when I'm getting a headache: I don't know if it has to do with the nerve that the piercing is putting pressure on or not. It has been a miracle for me.

As someone who has suffered from migraine since childhood it’s no fun not being able to function, you carry your meds like ritual, even people close to you starting to learn carry your meds cause they have seen you when it hit you the worst, preventive meds doesn’t make you feel good, and your meds sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t, and you never know what’s gonna trigger it, it’s very frustrating

I used to have very strong migraines with aura and, in my case the cause was butter. I stopped eating foods with butter and I never had migraines again.

I've gotten migraines since I was 11. I get 6-8 per year on average lasting about 12 hours every time. I don't know how I'd cope with having chronic ones. I get visual disturbances and have to go to bed immediately in the dark after taking Advil Migraine.

      - my best response is to catch as early as possible with excedrin migraine as well as drinking caffeine tea... the caffeine is important. I don't drink coffee or soda at all. So I use tea.

What has helped me to reduce the number of migraines I get is beta blockers. I have been on propranolol for almost two years and it has saved me.

Have come to comprehend My ten Years of migraines were mostly based In dehydration in my Body -- if you suffer from migraines, drink a Lot of water, drink magnesium.... you need minerals, potassium plus other minerals - so simply to correct, but the doctors will never help you with what really works.

need more men owning up to their migraines. I know they get them but probably they think it’s a bad headache and take 4 aspirin. Every 8 hours! More male sufferers, grant money starts flowing.

DO YOU GET MIGRAINES OFTEN, not sometimes, but OFTEN? Up until earlier this year I had 3 to 5 all day migraines every week for 5 years straight (my brain tumor wasn’t the reason nor was my tonsils which are both now removed) and the only thing that finally got rid of them permanently is 120mg propranolol per day (40 mg regular which is a green pill and 80mg extended release / work your way up to 120mg) and at home one shot per month of Emgality. It’s an epiPen style case so you don’t see the needle. It stings like crazy for 5 seconds max and the pain (stinging sensation) is gone instantly after. Do it in the thigh and alternate each month to each thigh. You have to give Emgality 4 months to really work. It will work! But Propranolol really helps keep it gone. Emgality weakens the migraines. One shot lasts 30 days in the system.
I did not exaggerate, I really suffered that much and did a lot of trial and error. Of course I went to the chiropractor, got massages, ate very healthy, worked out but it’s hard to be active when you have all day migraines and NONE of that helped until I took those specific meds. Obviously I’m the victim not the doctor so screenshot my message and simply bring this up to your doctor. I’m helping you prevent years of trial and error. This IS a one size fit all solution for anyone with weekly migraines for years aka chronic migraines. My headache doctor at Stanford and my headache doctor at UCSF got me to this lovely point.
If your insurance doesn’t approve Emgality then call your insurance and ask them to do a ‘prior authorization’. Then make sure before your doctor receives that paper work to fill out for the insurance they know this is the best option that way you’ll actually get approved. You’ll get approved no matter the insurance.
When I use to get a migraine I would take a cocktail of meds recommended by the ER. 2 ibuprofen, 2 Tylenol, one Nurtec. Swallow the pills after you eat something. It can be a banana or a hand full of nuts. It got me by for 2-3 days of no pain. Nurtec is in the same class as Emgality expect it’s a dissolvable tablet you place on your tongue. It doesn’t taste bad at all. It’s like a light minty flavor. You can take this before or after the pills. But do it around the same time not hours a part.
It’s now May and I haven’t had one migraine since January!!!!! And yes I believe in a higher power and honey that’s not what helped me through this journey. Medication did and I hate taking meds. Good luck.
