    Dave and Brooke Whipple have a video on the ten items they took to Vancouver Island and they said having a white tarp to work under was great. They said it had to be white, because the light from blue and green tarps are too depressing to work under. They also said having a bar of soap was great because you could wash yourself and your clothes. It was a big morale booster.

      You need at least fifty pounds of surplus body fat to succeed in Alone. (I've got 100. I would do well regardless of skill.) Lilly might have, what, two pounds? Maybe? Somewhere? Lilly would have to get 'extremely' lucky with food to avoid being medically disqualified long before the end. I would love to watch how she would deal with the challenge, but she would be going in knowing she's got no chance of making it to the end. Give Lilly my extra 100 pounds, and no one could beat her.

    • @truenorth365

      Fat is not the only way to survive. Intelligence, smart solutions and protein conservation goes along way! Surplus body weight can in many situation just make it even harder. You get tired more quickly, make wrong decisions and burn more proteins than you can put in. I really don´t agree on your comment.

      I can understand why you'd think that but in these long term survival scenarios there's just no way. Without other humans to help you bring in the quantities of food you'd need, you're guaranteed to lose weight, without fat reserves your body consumes your muscles (which by the way makes it more cumbersome to move and makes you tired than extra weight) Peter is right, you'd need extra body fat to outlast the contestants and not starve to death.

    This is now a retro comment...but ok. I'm a 66 yr old survivalist and primitive skills expert. In the past I was an Idaho State guide with WFR certification. I have at least 60 weeks on trail with no tent. And I finally tuned in to UA-cam to find some great survivalist like this brilliant and strong young woman! Yay, Lily! I, too, love "Alone." Since three years have passed not sure if you are still trying, but never give up! My change up would be...either rain forest or high desert...I want a 12x12 sheet of heavy mil greenhouse plastic (call it a clear plastic tarp--if I was only given one item to take anywhere it would be this). Next change: snares. These two I would request in exchange for two of your four rations. I'm good with bowdrill and only need a carbon blade for spark...so when I get my first bowdrill fire I'd quick-like be preparing/finding my spark materials...lots of dif rocks will spark on carbon--just need some charred material for weaker sparks. Good luck for maybe 2021 or 2022 season??? I'll be watching and rooting for you, dear one!

      @bali song awesome ideas! I still like my clear plastic for desert water production or cowboy burrito shelter. Everything else for high shade. I really like the idea of at least having that 5x5 piece...you can extract water even from Death Valley sands of you at least have that much. I didn't know they also provide a 20x20! Wow! Is it one of the ten items?

    • @panpiper

      Lilly has a thyroid condition that makes it really hard for her to gain weight. Alone is an endurance contest in which going in with a substantial reserve of body weight is an insurmountable advantage. Lilly simply could not outlast some of the bigger contestants before being forced out medically, she is simply too thin.

    • @dianneiverglynne
      @dianneiverglynne Рік тому +1

      @@panpiper oh...I did not know about her condition. Still, though, she's used to living with it and challenging herself. She knows how much she has to eat and I don't think she's one to huddle in her shelter complaining about no food without a line or five in the water. Plus...you never know what will happen to the other competitors. If it were my choice I'd still let her try.

    Lily... thank you for doing what you do. My college bound daughter had absolutely no idea of what to do in case SHTF or when the Chicken Little Sky Falls and so, since I've subscribed to your channel, I played one of your videos where wolves were around your area and you made a quick shelter, started a fire and went fishing, and my daughter was amazed that a WOMAN can do survival stuff. I guess it was my fault for not taking her on my little bushcraft stints during the course of her life, but, now she is bugging me to go do stuff after watching that vid. So, you are in a small or BIG way an inspiration to our younger women generation showing them that they aren't helpless and you're giving my daughter a "CAN DO" approach that of which I couldn't do. Thanks Girl! You're a Rockstar in California, USA.

      Under Surveillance not true, i noticed you spelled meant wrong as well but I figured I’d leave that alone since you had already fixed it once. Also I am not a mother. I only have to worry about myself when SHTF . but if I were, my child would have an open mind and be smart enough to not label themselves or others and fall into the trap of divide and conquer, a technique that has been used on the masses for centuries as part of the Rothschild NWO.

      Lilly said it herself. She is too thin to succeed on Alone. She would have to get super lucky with food, and stay lucky, to not wind up being medically disqualified from too much weight loss. Lilly does not have any weight to lose. If I could give her my 100 extra pounds, 'then' she would win hands down.

    I haven't watched the show so I googled the choices.
    Ten Items:
    1. Hatchet
    2. Saw
    3. Bivi bag
    4. Frying pan
    5. ferro rod set
    6. towel
    7. fishing line and hooks
    8. leatherman multi-tool
    9. 5 lbs of dried pulses/legumes/lentils mix
    10. 2 lbs of rice or sugar and 1 lb of salt

    • @ecocentrichomestead6783
      @ecocentrichomestead6783 6 років тому +1

      I know what a bivi bag is. The idea would be to make a debis bed, lay the bivi bag on it and cover the bivi bag with more debris. the bivi bag is a pocket to crawl into and the debris would be adjusted to the right amount of insulation. The towel quickly absorbs moisture if you get wet, you then dry it out by the fire.

      Horror Amino My points in many comments about shtf, teotwawki, and most situations and evacuations, disasters or haul it cause you gotta run for your life. We can speculate and prepare only so much, the rest is knowledge and skills using that knowledge.

      I agree with what you're saying but this video discussion was about the survivalist TV show "Alone" where the contestants are only allowed to choose ten items to take with them and survive with them.
      I think that Survival Lilly would make a great contestant on the show.

    • @peggyhall5363
      @peggyhall5363 6 років тому +1

      Horror Amino Yes, Lilly would. And I agreed with, I think your second sentence. Lilly had said herself much the same thing. I had just took it to the next notch bc this is survival, even though controlled.

    • @nando68two
      @nando68two 6 років тому +2

      Peggy Hall
      But I also agree with your other comment too. In a real world scenario where a disaster struck, we might not even be home or near our gear. All those preps are useless if we aren't with them. We really could have to rely on the clothes on our backs and the items in our pockets while we run for our lives (like you said).
      In general, I EDC the items I'd need to just get home. If the crisis is so big that I can't get home, then I'd have to start scrounging and foraging fast for supplies to sustain myself until I could be reunited with my family and with my preps.
      Will I be able to survive that long? I don't know. Because every situation is so fluid and every crisis is constantly evolving, I won't know until I've been put to that challenge.
      How would I do on the TV show "Alone"? I probably wouldn't win, but I also know that I probably wouldn't be the first one taken away either. I hope to last at least halfway through before I have to be rescued.

      Gail Stone, thank you. Most of these "reality" shows are geared towards entertainment. They were created to fill a niche, this one being the survivalist, prepper community. The producers, would never allow anything to happen to a contestant, or allow them to do anything that Hollywood wouldn't approve of.

      So getting dropped off in the woods with your gear and camera gear to building your own shelter from scratch and forage for food is not real? Yet, the people on here take off their camera and go back home for food. Lily said she would be skin in bones in "Alone" as she would not get carbohydrates. I guess the animals walking around are robots. I guess when contestants get hurt on alone (i.e. cut themselves with axes or hook themselves with fish hooks) it was all planned. I guess one contestant staged his fear of wolves/panthers/bears. I guess they really simulate the weight droppage and the constipation very well. Did you ever watch the show? This isn't your garden variety "reality" TV show, where people are fighting yet no one in public even is watching.

    Your assessment of must have supplys are great Lilly..but personally I would not rely on my bodrill skills totally as a firestarter ..but other than that I agree to those 10 items you selected.. (back to Mat Graham again).He is most likely about the only survivalist that I know of that could survive & "thrive" in almost any environment with absolutely NO supplys. His skills are the best I've seen..(excluding some various native tribes around the world, in cultures that daily live in primitive conditions & are naturally adapted to that lifestyle).

    Very interesting video Lilly. Good reasoning for the items on your list. I agree with the saw vs the ax too. With a large enough knife, it would be just fine for some light chopping service. I would outlast everyone if it was based on weight! I have spare for days. LOL Side note and just a thought, take your camera off auto focus for this sort of static situation.

      Strictly from a burning calories point of view, a saw is definitely more efficient than an axe. When you are out there for two or three months, calories burned is very important.

    • @trendinvestor2893
      @trendinvestor2893 6 років тому +1

      Steve MacInnis
      Me personally, I would take both. A few months ago I would have thought an ax was more efficient, but I have changed my mind after reading so many comments about how much more efficient a saw is.
      My top 15 items are listed below roughly in the order of importance. I might swap a few items around depending on the location.
      1. Ferro rod
      2. Multi-tool with file
      3. 2 qt pot with lid & handles
      4. Estwing 26 inch steel handled ax
      5. Synthetic -40 sleeping bag
      6. Line + 24 Fish hooks & 1 sewing needle

      9. Bow or Sling bow & arrows
      10. Shovel (with sharpened edge)
      11. Trapping wire
      12. Knife
      13. 12 x 12 White tarp

      15. Rations

    • @trendinvestor2893
      @trendinvestor2893 6 років тому +2

      Steve MacInnis
      That is a list of my top 15 items for the alone show. I realize I could only take 10. If I were going to a really wet region I would probably move the 12 x 12 tarp into the top 10 and take something else out of the top 10. If I were going to be close to the ocean, I might move the gillnet into the top 10.
      An Axe can do several things that a saw can't do. I would use an axe for splitting firewood, whereas I would use the saw for cutting logs into shorter blocks of wood.
      I might actually use the saw for felling trees. Or possibly use both by cutting the Notch in the tree with the axe and cutting the back cut with the saw.
      I would use the back of the axe head as a hammer for pounding Stakes into the ground or breaking rocks into smaller pieces or any other tasks that would require a hammer.
      I would also use the back of the axe head as a digging tool for doing things like digging a fire pit or digging for grubs and worms to use as fishing bait.
      I could also use the steel handled axe as a strong pry bar.
      The axe might be better for quickly delimbing logs if I wanted to build a log cabin such as Randy did this season.
      I could use the axe for killing small animals at close range such as snakes or porcupines or opossums or whatever.
      While not real likely, the axe could potentially be used as a defensive weapon against animals. I would not want to use an axe to defend myself against wolves or bears, but it would be better than nothing.
      As I previously mentioned, a saw would be more efficient from a calorie standpoint for cutting firewood and for cutting logs for shelters. The saw also would be better for making precise cuts for doing things like building a log cabin. A saw would also be good for making paiute dead fall traps such as Larry made this season.
      Unfortunately, I most likely won't ever go on the show. But at least I can sit on my couch and think about the things that I would use and how I would go about everything.

For long term survival, only the most basic, reliable, dependable stuff serves well. and obviously knowing local survival means also help. Nomadic people from mongolia living in yurt in most isolated parts continue to survive with only most basic and few stuffs, in -40c during winter to 30c during summer. For heating during winter, they burn dense cow dung, better heating than burning wood.

    My list:
    Sleeping Bag: -40°, synthetic
    Customized Leatherman 'Signal' survival knife multitool (includes a small ferro rod)
    Silky Katanaboy 650mm Folding Saw
    Silky NATA Chopper Blade
    Dutch oven pot
    64 ounce single wall steel canteen
    80 meters of Paracord
    Fishing Line & Hooks: 25 hooks, 50 lb test line
    Recurve bow and nine aluminum/carbon composite arrows, 4 field points, 5 broadheads.
    3.5 pound spool of trapping wire
    I have no food rations. However I was a martial artist in my teens and twenties and spent most of that time weighing 120 pounds. I now weigh 220 pounds. In essence, that boils down to 100 pounds of 'emergency rations' that I could safely burn off. The tiny ferro rod on the multitool would not be sufficient for lighting a new fire every day. My plan would be to bank fire coals to keep a fire going for weeks at a time. I am least certain about the trapping wire. I expect if I went with that, I would use it mostly for cordage, not trapping. My traps would tend to be large deadfalls, of which I would make as many as I could effectively bait.
    In Mongolia for shelter I'd build a debris covered wikiup with an interior, dugout stone fireplace (centrally off set). The fireplace is both to control sparking and to serve as a heat reservoir. I would also early on while still strong, perhaps optimistically, build a smokehouse (another smaller wikiup), so I'll be ready to dry and preserve any windfall of game or fish I luck into. Projects to keep boredom at bay would be a lounge chair. A comfy latrine, complete with its own lean-to. At least one thick grass mat to pad my raised bed area. A solid, windproof door for my shelter, etc..
    I don't think either hunger or loneliness would be my weak point. I spent years being hungry, and I've always been very content in solitude. I think boredom is my biggest danger, that and of course the always present chance factor for accidents and the like.
    Of course this is all purely hypothetical. I will never actually be on Alone. I am both too old to handle the physical hardship (60) and my bushcraft experience is many decades in my pre-teen past.

      "In essence, that boils down to 100 pounds of 'emergency rations' that I could safely burn off."
      It doesn't work that way, unfortunately. If you lose more than a pound a day (not infeasible if you're active and on a near-starvation diet) you're putting your kidneys at risk. It's not something you'd want to tolerate for long (especially for just a TV show, whatever the prize money) and you'd need to concentrate on consuming proteins and staying hydrated to compensate.

If they had more for instance what you are required to carry in a Bush Plane, we would see more creative bushcraft instead of just a constant struggle. My list would be; tarp, cordage, wool blanket, cook kit (pot & cup & spoon), canteen, knife, ax, saw, poncho, fishing kit , fire making kit, rice. Honestly, I think they give them toilet paper, chap stick , sun screen, and sometimes bug juice. Or they would look much worse.
