I really appreciate your introductory dialogues; they explain when and where to use the fly and under which conditions . That’s very helpful and informative !
I am for whatever works to catch trout!! Nothing wrong with this FLY!! I use them and sometimes it's the only fly that they will eat. I enjoy your videos. Keep doing them.
Whether you're on the water or at your tying desk, I always appreciate your attention to detail and explanations without a lot of filler talk. Keep o keeping on!
This method of tying a squirmy is fabulous. I whipped up a dozen today and can hardly wait to try them out on the water. I had to laugh about the floss threaders though. I bought the smallest pack available (200) and don’t see ever running out…Again, love the technique for putting this fly together. Thanks!
The small stream videos are probably my favorite. I have one from August that I never produced that I'm going to try to do this winter and launch this spring.
Can’t get enough of this tying flies videos! But I would love (if possible) a video where you actually go through the different gears, so that you can actually show them to the cameras in details and maybe you could give a list of the absolutely must-have instruments! 🤙
Definitely a good idea! I would recommend you just get a little starter kit for fly tying. They'll come with a vise and all of the basic tools you would need. I found a cheap one online that comes with a book too. amzn.to/35phWPT
I just tied a dozen of these last night. They are fantastic flies. Most people don't like to use them but they work better than pretty much any other fly and catch most of my big fish!
I like the dubbing being added to this fly, I’ve used these in the past for trout, pan fish and small mouth bass. Orange color drives the small mouth crazy. 👍
I liked your version of the squirmy, the way you attach it to the hook. As a new learner in tying these, I made the mistake of using a tightened approach with the thread, which ended up cutting all my squirmy patterns. Ugh. I am now using your approach! Thank you!
One thing I do now that I did not put in this video is I don't let the bare thread touch the squirmy material. I dub the thread before I have it contact the squirmy material. It is keeps it from cutting the squirmy material. I tie a ton of these and never have them come undone unless a fish thrashes one around for a while! 😊
Love this variation! I’ve used the squirmy in high , fast and stained water , and have had success doing so ! Like you said , not very popular with a lot of purists, but it catches fish ! Nicely done !
Wow! I remember seeing your version a while ago and opted to just check the internet. Should’ve stayed with you. Like how you tie them.Very, very nicely tied!
Yeah... I played with several ways of tying them over the years and ended up on this method... It pulled together a few things I liked from other methods. One thing i do now that I didn't do as much then is I dub the thread wherever it comes in contact with the squirmy material... this keeps it from cutting the material and they last much longer this way.
Montana waters are high and off color right now . Went out the last few days and the pink squirmy was the ticket . Caught fish on other flies but the squirmy out performed 10 to 1 . Like you I usually don’t fish them but they do have there place . Thanks for sharing
Yeah... they really do have their place. They have become a huge confidence fly for me in certain conditions. They are now my go to fly for steelhead too. I tied them in various weights because my steelhead waters can be really small or pretty big and I can only use one fly. I'm loving them more and more!!!
Had an experience on a pretty good reservoir up here in Central Oregon connected to this fly. Late season and fishing in an area that has been pretty good all year and after an hour and a half with me not landing a fish and the OTher guy landing 10 or 11...... He finally, (finally, I didn't ask but was close to doing so) shared what he was using and it was your pattern just about to the T. Holy cow did that work. I will be using your methods and tying some up pronto. Thanks again Loren
I’ve gotten into tying flies over the past couple of years, and I’ve been doing it on and off for panfishing in the summer and trout fishing in the winter. I’ve never tried tying this style fly before, but I’ll have to give it a try, this was a great tutorial with some really helpful tips!
Thanks Maya! I saw that you did some fly fishing on your channel 😀 Panfish on the fly can be a lot of fun! I honestly don't enjoy tying flies but I tie because I want flies that work and I want to make them my way.
Nice to see you talking about and tying a Squirmy Worm ! It works and so does your video it works well with my style of fly fishing and thank you for all your videos I have learned allot from them !
I live out west and have used the squirmy worm in some of the rivers out here. Pattern is pretty much the same other than I wrap squirmy worm body material around the hook body for the middle of the fly. It has a tendency to come undone, so I like your pattern using dubbing and will give it a try.
really like all of your videos - especially the euro nymph series...watched them all, and you've really done a great job laying it out from A-Z..can't wait to give it a shot here in CNY
Well, since I am learning to fly fish, guess I’m going to have to learn to tie flies! Better start saving my pennies. Nice video. Def keep those nymphing videos coming!
Yeah... me too. Just didn't get out there with everything I had going on. I need to retire and do this full time. Oh wait... I need money to survive... nevermind 😂😂😂
Yup... that'll work too. I tend not to use bobbin threaders for anything because they are metal and can damage your bobbins over time (especially if you have ceramic coating inside). So I just got used to using the flossers that will never damage your bobbins.
This is very cool content. I had always done "dry fly" fishing with an altered technique because I do not have a fly rod. What I did is use a wine cork about 3 feet from the dry fly just to give it enough weight to cast, but still float. I came across your Euro Nymphing videos. I thought they were very interesting and how similar they are to the technique of drifting a bead for steelhead with a standard long rod that is not a fly rod. I am looking forward to trying some of the nymphing techniques you show. Thanks for sharing your great information.
The Squirmy works, that’s for sure and I like your variation of it and thinking outside the box. I am just starting to learn about tying flies and would love to see a simple Pheasant Tail, if you haven’t done it yet.
I've done a frenchie which is a pheasant tail with a hot spot. That one was several years ago. I stopped tying it and now tie the Peacock Ice Dub nymph in its place. Great fly! That fly tying video is on the channel.
I used to use them to thread my bobbins instead of the metal ones because some of my bobbins have ceramic tips and the metal can damage them. Then when I started tying the squirmy, I experimented and found they worked really well for it. When I sell the fly tying kits of the squirmy, they all come with the flosser 😊
I’ve tried to tie squirmies in the past and wasn’t able to find a method that worked for me without cutting the material. This pattern worked MUCH better for me with one exception: I wasn’t able to get the material through the bead the way you showed. I ended up threading the material through the bead before putting the bead on the hook. It was a bit troublesome trying to get the wire on with the squirmy material somewhat in the way, but it worked. Great fly!!😢
It can definitely be tricky to get the squirmy material through the bead! Sometimes it goes easily and sometimes it refuses to cooperate. The big key to not cutting the squirmy material is not letting the thread directly contact the worm on the ends where it is secured. I have changed my process a bit... I now use dubbing on the thread on the front and back where it locks the material down. I have not had any fall apart that way yet. Also, be sure not to use any adhesives...it'll destroy the material.
A bobbin threader also works well to pull the worm through- request for fly tying videos: how about your top 5 spring time flies? I’m in the Northeast so perhaps something region specific - get a jump start on the up coming season!
The flies I use vary depending on the type of fishing. Nymphs are pretty standard and work all year. Dry flies can be very specific to the region and water! I don't fish dry flies much anymore but man there is just something special about watching a trout eat your dry fly!!!!
This is such an effective pattern. Just two days ago I used a hand tied one to bag 2 big ones. A 20" brown and then a 22" whitefish that turned out to be longer than the state record (should've kept it and turned it in, but let it go and found out that night about what the record was)
Great video as always! Deadly fly as well as one of my favorites lol. I wanna see you tie a egg fly or another nymph pattern you like ! Also just saw I won the flies yay!
This is the best tutorial on this fly, thank you so much for adding this to your list of awesome videos. I didn’t have a dental threader so I used the snipped off piece from the tie in, I just treaded through the bead and made a loop, worked just as good, this is a very quick tie. Have you been to the brick and mortar of the Fly Shack in Gloversville ? It’s a nice store but too bad it’s only opened from Thursday-Saturday. Keep doing what you’re doing, it’s great
Thanks! I actually have to tie a bunch more of these tonight! Got a couple of nice browns on my last squirmy (in brown) last week. I have not been to their new store... yet! I went to their old store once many years ago. I've definitely got to make a visit one day soon!!!
I only use a fly rod ...... trout aren't the only fish meant to be caught on a fly rod ever seen tarpon on the fly , Mark Sosins salt water journal I've caught pickerel on a fly rod ! So wild ...... they roll like alligators and action like that on a fly rod is amazing!
Oh interesting! I never even thought of that. How do you hold the bead when doing this though since it is not on a hook in a vise? Pliers or just by hand?
I realize this is a junk fly but on my local stocked water I truly believe these young stockers do not realize what a fly is yet. I fish a similar version to this with no shame. I really like the variation of this! Great looking fly.
Yes! I just bought some hooks for jig streamers! Will be doing some soon! I also have an advanced video in the Euro series for fly selection and my favorite fly patterns. Trying to get more fly tying videos out before I do that one though.
Hi Ken! I wouldn't spend a lot of money on fly tying tools until you know it is something you want to do more seriously. I tied on a really basic vise for many years and still use some of my original tools! I would recommend a starter kit... something like this. amzn.to/3yt9tau I used a very similar starting point and then upgraded my vise over the years until I got the Renzetti Traveler (which I love!). Here is what that one looks like. amzn.to/3a2c6H3 Best of luck and enjoy!!!

Nice tie for sure. I’ve been fishing worms since the 80’s when they seemed to come into the arsenal. There has always been some stigma with it, but worms are in the system, trout eat them and I think they are largely accepted at this point. Don’t feel bad😅
My last fishing trip I slayed them on the sexy stonefly, today I caught 5 on the sexy stonefly and 17 on the pink squirmy. A 20 4 18in and several around 16.
YES!!! That is what it's all about! Congrats on some great catches. The pink squirmy caught me a 21" brown today on a stream that has only produced fish up to 19" for me until today.
I live in NE Ohio, Steelhead country. I remember as a kid my old man and his buddy were looking for fishable water. We ended up where a smaller trib met the main branch, thus creating an obvious mudline where the slightly clearer creek met the muddier river. I remember my dad asking two guys who were killing them what they were using. It was a san Juan worm. I'd never heard of them. I can't remember if they gave us a few or if my dad's buddy had a few but we put them on and did really well. I remember getting a big male
I've used a similar pattern catching fish in CO and here in the northeast. Cant wait to see how your variation works with the crazier steelhead bites and fights! Do you ever use the white zonker for steelhead? That would be another great video.
I really appreciate your introductory dialogues; they explain when and where to use the fly and under which conditions . That’s very helpful and informative !
Great way to tie a squirmy worm in. Much appreciated.
Thank you. I tried many ways and this was by far the best way for me.
I am for whatever works to catch trout!! Nothing wrong with this FLY!! I use them and sometimes it's the only fly that they will eat. I enjoy your videos. Keep doing them.
Thank you! I will definitely keep the videos rolling!
I will tie the worm thanks
Worm cool

The small stream videos are probably my favorite. I have one from August that I never produced that I'm going to try to do this winter and launch this spring.
Thanks for tip about pulling the squirmy material through the bead and for the 5-part nymphing series

Excellent way you are tying the squirmy! I need to try your method. Thanks again! I look forward to all your videos.
Thanks for sharing, great fly to get down and dirty and like the way you tie in to increase durability!! Keep em coming.
Love this fly for early spring.
ME TOO!! I catch so many good fish with it!
Thanks for showing me a better way to tie these! Really appreciate you sharing your secrets with us!👍🏻🇺🇸

Sweet! Good luck!
I have had decent results fishing this fly. I am just starting to tie flies and this is a great one to start with, thanks!
Definitely a great fly to learn to fish with!
Nothing wrong with the worm. Good tying sequence. Thank you for another excellent video.
Thank you. I like the bead’s from the fly shack they have a great selection.
Yeah... I buy them by the 100 pack. I go through too many to use smaller packs.
Been watching you the past year. You are very informative in all aspects of fly fishing.
Thank you for joining us! :)
Used this on the Watauga in TN and it killed. Btw, the Euro-Nymphing series is the best I've found. TYVM.

I have several euro nymph fly tying videos on the channel if you haven't found them already. The usually say "Favorite Euro Nymphs".
Looking forward to some more ice fishing videos. Really enjoyed some of your past tutorials.
I was out last friday but lost most of my footage. Hoping to get out again next weekend!

Haha... It is nice to be able to tie your own flies so you can make what you want. That's why I started.
Great videos. Caught my first trout on the Yakima River this morning on a euro rig with a squirmy.
Nice!!
A favorite pattern of mine. Keep the content coming! Missed the salmon vids this year
Yeah... me too. Just didn't get out there with everything I had going on. I need to retire and do this full time. Oh wait... I need money to survive... nevermind 😂😂😂
Nice technique, for my squirmies I use Loon Outdoors water based head cement to seal the deal.
Thank you for the video, the go to fly for high water. Would like to see a video on tying a balanced leech
just ordered some Squirmy Worm today. will give it a try on steelhead.
Great on steelhead and trout!
I would love to try this fly since I’ve used the pink powerbaits for trout and they are amazing.
Yeah... it has become my go to fly in so many situations. And most of my big trout come on the pink squirmy!
Thanks for the video. I’ve attempted worms and always made a mess of them. Definitely will try this.
They're tricky for sure! I like this method the best after trying just about all of them.
Great video. Gonna have to hit up the Fly Shack tomorrow and get some materials.
Definitely! Have fun!
fantastic where i live thanks and keep the videos coming .
Thanks, will do!
I use that pattern here in wv mountain streams. Excellent information.
Universal pattern for pretty much everywhere!
Thanks for the instructions
This is another really good one. Great for high or off color water!
Cool thanks bunches for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching!
Nice pattern, really useful in Patagonia.

I wasn't either... until I tried them 😂 I still have never tied on a mop fly. Gonna hold out on that for a bit longer 😂
A bobbin threader is great to pull the worm material through .Great vid cheers from NZ
Yes it does.. as long as it fits through the hole of the bead.

No shame in the squirmy worm game. I use them successfully in North GA. Thanks for this alternative pattern.
Thanks fer'da wormy squirmy!

If you want try threading the squirmy wormy through the bead first and then slide onto the hook. I find that a lot easier.
Oh interesting! I never even thought of that. How do you hold the bead when doing this though since it is not on a hook in a vise? Pliers or just by hand?
Nice tying
Thanks

Great video, I understand the love-hate some people have with this fly. Just not natural enough for some purist but hey if it works I am game.
Me too!
Love the content!
Thanks!
I'm going to try and make these worms.
Nice... They work so well!
Nice tie for sure. I’ve been fishing worms since the 80’s when they seemed to come into the arsenal. There has always been some stigma with it, but worms are in the system, trout eat them and I think they are largely accepted at this point. Don’t feel bad😅
I don't feel bad 😂 I love em in the right conditions!
I have to remember to try this when the bugs are scarce on my the river.
Definitely!
That's awesome! It is definitely a go to fly for me for steelies and big trout!
Not going to snob out. I'll tie it on and give it a shot
Exactly lol.
Such a killer for me -using rainbow dub
I'm definitely going to tie a few that way! Thanks!
I've used a similar pattern catching fish in CO and here in the northeast. Cant wait to see how your variation works with the crazier steelhead bites and fights! Do you ever use the white zonker for steelhead? That would be another great video.
I have not used a white zonker.. I use black wooly buggers for them sometimes.
