    You pass the patch of craft fur are great for bonefish and permit flies. Also the transfer foil for crease fly are available in hobby lobby stores. Oh and estaz material is also a great material for saltwater flies.

    i was just there last week and bought an 8 pk of jewelry resin for 14.99 to try out. sometimes i dont like to use my good stuff for tying. also, i bought craft fur & their foam sheets. i also looked at the glass beads. i got some stamens in the floral section for eyes. plus the sales are really good. they also have floral pins that i thought you could make shanks out if really cheap price & the wire was good just not stainless steel i dont think. good video! 🙌

    Thanks for the video. You hit on some great options. Glass beads are about 4th or 5th on my list of things to get at Hobby Lobby. Foam is #1, but I do a lot of warm water fishing. So, crease flies, hoppers, ants an beatles, sliders etc.The yarn is #2. Did you know that there is a brand that is the exactly the same stuff as Enrico Puglisi fibers? All you have to do is separate the braided bundles and comb it out. You get cheap, bulk EP fibers in strands as long as you decide to cut them. And the color options are crazy. Thanks again for all your tips.

    I use the glass seed beads for eyes.. I use heavy monofilament and cut to about 1/2 or 1/4” depending on the size of my fly. Grasp with a pair of Hemostats add a bead and use a lighter to melt the monofilament to secure the bead, then repeat for the other side, and you have awesome dumbbell eyes. I also buy acrylic yarn and use a spice or coffee grinder and cut the yarn into 1” pieces and grind about a handful at a time.. you can mix in some Ice Dub or Angelina fibers to add a little flash. Sometimes I mix it with rabbit or Muskrat fur for an extra buggy dubbing. I wait and catch the yarn on sale and you can get an entire skein for a couple of dollars which will make you more of that color dubbing than you will ever use. My last ‘tip’ is look where the Cross stitching items are and buy you some plastic Embroidery floss bobbins. I HATE disorganized work space and I use these to put all my dozens of different colors of chenille. It is very tidy and it makes it easier to handle. I don’t like waste so I never cut my chenille until I have used all I need for the fly or Jig I’m tying. I just hold the bobbin in my hand as I wrap the hook and then snip once I’m done. The rest stays neatly on the bobbin.

    6:05 right by the wire there’s some elastic beading cord that’s clear. The .5 mm size is great for small jig nymphs in size 16-20. Give it a pheasant tail, tapered underbody of your favorite color thread, and touching wraps with the beading cord up the body. Crushed a lot of rainbows in Colorado on that fly.

      It is very easy to do. Harder to get the wire size right for me.
      You can bend a “V” in the wire and not cut it with the pliers and it will bend it back down the shank and no way for it to pull out after it is tied down.

    You mentioned a quality difference in feathers, will they look and act the same just maybe be less durable? What exactly do you mean?

    • @honeyholeangling
      @honeyholeangling  Рік тому +1

      This is a great question and a whole video could be made to answer it. The short answer is that "fly tying" feathers are bred for the fly tier. Look at whiting farms chickens. These chickens are bred to produce the best possible feathers for fly tiers. Craft stores are pulling feathers from chickens that are not for "fly tiers." Here are some considerations: quill that doesnt twist and is supple, barb stiffness for dry flies, webbiness for wet flies, feather length, size range, feather quantity, feather quality. Fly tying hackles are also graded on these items mentioned above. Obviously you are going to pay more for a higher grade. Personally i dont use the craft store feathers because there is a huge difference in quality and I am willing to pay more for that quality. Hopefully this helps. If you have any other questions let me know!

    Always thought that learning to tie your own flies meant saving money all the way around but the materials you might as well just buy the flies as much as the materials and all the equipment cost and the quality feathers I'm not sure what that means is there a super chicken or superbird that they're getting these quality feathers off of what's the difference between the peacock hackle sold in the fly shop and my mom's in the yard

    • @honeyholeangling
      @honeyholeangling  9 місяців тому

      Tying flies doesn't save any money. if you really get into the hobby, you will spend a lot on materials to try different things. Check out Whiting farms. They raise chickens that are bred for fly tying. there is a big difference between those and what you will find at hobby lobby. The peakcock you find in the yard will work great for fly tying! Id be saving all of those feathers for tying myself.

    • @honeyholeangling
      @honeyholeangling  Рік тому +1

      The beads are almost weightless. They are made out of glass. They aren’t going to help your fly sink. I like copic markers. They are kinda expensive but are really high quality. I don’t think hobby lobby sells those markers anymore.

    I got the magnifying glassses with LED lights in the temples (Brite-eyes, I believe they're called?) from Walmart. They're rechargeable, and give me perfect light and clarity for tying small dry flies. I tried googly eyes on streamers at first, until I realized they wouldn't let the fly sink and swim correctly. I started using them on topwater poppers or terrestrials because they're buoyant, cheap, and easy to see.
