Paris’ history can also be told by its sewers. A Haussmann legacy that remains in use nearly 150 years after its creation. This gigantic, complex network is a maze of tunnels: 2,600 kilometers of galleries, same as the distance between Paris and Moscow, allowing Parisians to carry away their wastewater while also providing them with clean drinking water.
How does this network built in the 19th century continue to display unrivaled modernity even in this day and age? What ingenious systems were set up to move millions of cubic meters of water without using any energy? What are the roles of the gate boats, tanks, and spillways? How do these sewers improve the health of the environment?

Judging by the sewer design I think the sewer of Paris is much better than the sewer of New York or any other big cities in the world. This is environmentally acceptable for healthy living. What a great innovation.
Comms,the sewerage waste system,drinking water, and non drinking water all in one accessible network.The people who thought up,designed, and built this multiple purpose network are truly geniuses. The fact that this network is still fully functional and still operating today is impressive!!
The only thing that changed is that they lined the walls with concrete bcs the bricks were getting unstable in some parts

Now THIS is how a sewerage system should be built, maintained and allowed to function!!! The English are very proud of the London sewer system, but it has nowhere near the functionality of the Paris system. It also speaks volumes of the political system of France that both the local and national governments remained invested in seeing the completion of the sewer system, even though it took several decades. Then there is the fact that Paris continues to invest in the system today to ensure its continued operation, while also paying close attention to the ecological impact on the environment and how to make it a positive, rather than negative impact! I found this documentary absolutely fascinating! I knew nothing of the Parisian sewer system before, but now I believe it to one of, if not the BEST, sewerage systems in the WORLD today! Comparable, and maybe sometimes even superior, to more modern systems. Parisians have every right to be proud of their sewer system, and I agree that it should be considered as part of Paris's cultural legacy, to just to Paris, but to the world too!

All my life (50++ years), i thought this was the way of doing it, not ripping open roads every few weeks to lay a new pipe or pull a new cable.
Only in my vision, I would have made 2 parallel systems, one carrying sewer and maybe gas, one for the fresh water supply and other service.
The later would collect the storm water from road drains etc, so that there are two system, one for foul water - one for run-off water.
Such a magnificent ideas that many country should adopt this genius ideas. Paris is one of my most beautiful cities that I admire and love about when it comes to history and old architectural land mark. I ❤ Paris. 💚😊👍😘
No one has ever had the idea to upgrade the boats with some low voltage DC motors to run the gate and chains?

A funny fact: a prefect in charge of Paris passed a law in 1883 forcing people to use rubbish containers closed by a lid. People took the habit of calling those by the name of that prefect: poubelle (rubbish bin)

Paris is one of the few large cities I know of that has been able to keep a "mixed" system, that is storm wanter and wastewater. Atlanta for example dug up many of its streets about 15 years ago to separate the two due to the the system being frequently overwhelmed.
I can't afford the money or time to build a sewer system underneath my Lego Castle town, but I sure want to now! I remember someone once built a great Lego model of a modern cityscape with a proper sewer and got it onto the Ideas program. Lego made a mistake passing that one up!

are the team members trained equaly so they can substitute each other during their shifts? (or each member has a particular task within this job)?
I presume they are trained fir this meaning that they get all kinds of expertise specific to the sewage system. Certain skills are transferable and they seem to work in teams meaning. If few people are sick for a team not to be able to do their jobs, you can transfer members from another team

I laughed when they said there was absolutely zero chance of leaks or holes in the water pipe and behind him is a water pipe leaking. I understand that the pressure and water leaking will keep the sewage water out, but it was still contracting him

Maybe because they aren't so deep, some of the ones in London can be 25 metres deep. Some parts of the Fleet sewer is 25 metres deep and the overflow relief is even deeper
