  • An increasing number of Ukrainian families in the UK may find themselves homeless this Christmas, the government's been warned.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Over a hundred thousand Ukrainians arrived via the government's refugee scheme - which requires a UK sponsor to provide accommodation for six months.
With six months having passed in many cases, there's already been a huge increase in Ukrainians who've found themselves with nowhere to live.

Our neighbour took in a Ukrainian family a mother, a son and her daughter They had extra beds delivered by the Council and all the neighbours were so supportive gave them money every month But the host family couldn’t cope the mother smoked constantly inside the house, they repeatedly ask her to smoke outside They where making meals after midnight again the hosts requested to eat earlier as their daughter had the get up early for school On a visit to the Ukrainian centre the mother was told if she didn’t like her situation she could leave and get a hotel which she did. Such a shame as the young boy became a part of our community he couldn’t speak English but was trying very had to learn I hope they are doing well but sometimes kindness should be received with gratitude.

Hey you seem nice so I will be gentle. The reason things are so good where we live, is because for many many hundreds of years, we protected our lands through fighting! I know that sounds silly but in war, the ones who have the best stuff (armour, weapons, technology, food etc) tended to be the best. We had really good long bows and horses clad in armour that kept our lands safe for again, hundreds of years.

Wow, and back in my home country - Bulgaria we received with opne arms waves upon waves of refugees from Ukraine. When it started, it was still not the tourist season so many hotels opened their doors and allowed them to stay there temporarily. And I'm afraid to say we were shocked when we started getting complaints about the quality of the food (they didn't like the kind of fish they were being served and insisted on getting their food and alcohol from the restaurant menus instead). Then once summer rolled around and they were supposed to relocate to government-funded refugee centres, they refused to leave the hotels as they saw them being moved to refugee centres as us treating them like "animals". We then saw shocking scenes of hotel rooms being trashed and in one instance that made it on the news, they had smeared "Glory to Ukraine" onto the walls using faeces. I suppose that came out of the deep gratitude they had for all the help we were giving them. And I still remember a Syrian family many years ago who were relocated close to my home town and how humble and grateful they were for the shelter and warm meals and for being away from the bombs. I suppose those were different times (10+ years ago) and I really do pray and hope the war in Ukraine comes to an end as soon as possible but I feel Ukrainians should appreciate more our countries' efforts to help them in these difficult times.

And before the war i ve been to many places cause of business trips- EU, UK, USA- but i always wanted to live in Ukraine. As for Internet- yes it s TRUE, in EU its WAY WAY slower than what we had in Ukraine, any ukrainian refugee will approve my words. But come on- i dont judge anyone. There r a lot of not so good Ukrainians who act like other country owes them- which is ridiculous, but same time not less of foreign households owners of which decided to make a business when u settle 20-30 ukrainians at your second floor and government pays you for each person. This report is incomplete, because there are tens of thousands of British people living in B&Bs and emergency accommodation, and tens of thousands of refugees from places other then Ukraine, plus a population growth that has outstripped housebuilding for decades, plus thousands of street homeless (maybe tens of thousands because our method of counting is so flawed, speaking as an ex-homeless person who knows this well), plus every public services is completely destroyed. Name one that is fit for purpose.
Because this has been caused by chronic neglect and underfunding, the only solution to it would be chronic funding, which under the Tories and even Starmer's Labour IS NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN. We've got a climate crisis and transition to be accomplished unless we want to admit to our children that actually, because we hope to be dead by then, we don't really care. These are devastating problems and regarding the refugee and housing crisis, the only real solution would be something like a military operation to build quick, cheap, efficient but also comfortable accommodation which can be done. It's not ideal but this is a problem that has been in the making for decades and should have been tackled decades ago. Now we have to live with the consequences.
It's a complete myth that we can reduce the number of desperate people trying to get to the UK in any other way then through violence. And it's completely wrong to regard the global problem of displacement, war, drought, poverty and brutality as other people's problems. This attitude has cost us the Earth. And our selfish nationalisms have cost us each other.

This is why I've sympathy with people but facts have to be acknowledged and we have to stop living in a fantasy world.
It doesn't matter if someone is legal or illegal, if they're from Albania, Ukraine or Outter Mongolia, at the end of the day, nothing against anyone, this country doesn't have the resources to cope. This country is bankrupt, in the middle of a cost of living crisis, there's a shortage of housing in every sector, hospitals are buckling under the pressure of numbers, people can't afford to feed themselves and heat their homes.
We are and have always been generous people in the UK but we have reached a limit where we are now giving what we haven't got to give in the first place. We need to be honest with ourselves, many people are now living a life worse than if they had never come here.
It is time for sensible controls of numbers coming here. With all the best intentions we just don't have the funds or infrastructure to support everyone coming here.
It's sad to say it, but it's just the truth and we have to stop dealing in fantasy that we can take in forever.

UK has a lot of problems with lack of housing, poverty & an inadequate social system. These people made a mistake in coming.
As Slavs they would have been far better received in the (Western) Slavic jurisdictions of the EU. Now, obviously Poland is full, But well organised countries like Czech Republic, Slovenia, Croatia, etc would have integrated them so well, they probably wouldn’t feel Ukrainian anymore! This way they’re stuck in a country where a single mother doesn’t even have subsidised childcare to be able to earn a living… and so her only form of income is to either receive benefits or beg!

I'm sure this girl and her mother are nice people, but in a hotel there should be a lounge area, and there must be other streets and walkways in the area. As a Ukrainian and on behalf of Ukrainians I'd like to say sorry to all the hosts who faced issues with their guests. I had my relative staying with us for about 6 month and it was unexpectedly challenging, can't imagine how hard it was to host people that you've never seen before. I know in some cases everything worked well but I know many cases where it did not work out. We're culturally different and often people in UA are more likely to comment on negative things and less likely to express appreciation of something good and often that is creating that ungrateful feel. Also decades of soviet union (prison) breeded people that take everything for granted - government owns them pension, medical servise, whatever... And I'm afraid some of those arriving in hosting country think that they are entiteled to everything they think they need. Few generations will have to change until people understand that heating costs the market price and not what government will set, everything costs money and the money is taken from them through tax etc. , and if someone volunteered to help it's because they've tried to help and I truly believe most of Ukrainians do appreciate this help. Some of them stressed, uneducated and they can't appreciate the help as they should. I'm really sorry about that and extremely grateful for those who offered their help.
