- We managed to snag some more video of the Hurricane crate engine getting torture tested on the engine test rig. They absolutely flog these engines rotating them different directions to simulate g-forces of cornering, braking and accelerating.
Plans for a racing variant, the HurriCrate Cat X crate engine, are currently under development for race applications, including a future Drag Pak.
Cat 1 Crate Engine Highlights:
Twin turbocharged with liquid charge-air cooling turbos delivers 22 psi of peak boost
Cast aluminum pistons with cast iron top ring land insert
10.4:1 compression ratio with premium fuel recommended
Single high-pressure direct fuel injection with pump actuated by a dedicated chain-driven shaft
Engine-mounted water-to-air charge cooler with a dedicated cooling circuit with single inlet
Cat 3 Crate Engine Highlights:
Twin Garrett turbochargers with liquid charge-air cooling turbos delivers 26 psi of peak boost
Enhanced performance is delivered by lightweight, oil-jet cooled, forged aluminum pistons with an anodized top ring land and a diamond-like coating (DLC) on the pins to minimize friction
9.5:1 compression ratio with premium fuel recommended
Dual high-pressure direct fuel injection with pumps actuated by a dedicated chain-driven shaft
Engine-mounted water-to-air charge cooler with a dedicated cooling circuit with dual inlet
Additional HurriCrate engine series highlights include:
Two low-inertia, high-flow turbochargers, each feeding three cylinders, for rapid response to throttle inputs
Plasma Transfer Wire Arc (PTWA) coating in the cylinder bores for an ultra-thin, low-friction wear surface
Dual overhead camshafts with wide-range, fully independent variable valve timing
Dual water-cooled exhaust manifolds integrated in the cylinder head - Авто та транспорт
If this is what the In-line 6 Charger and challenger is gonna sound like, I’m all for it 💪🏾
News flash, Chrysler is discontinuing those 2 models next year.

@ROFLCOPTERS92 no they are not, they stated they are discontinuing those cars in their hemi powered form and Tim the ceo of FCA stated they can still come back in the future
I love the sound. Just imagine it with a blow off valve sound and stick shift if ever available.
I would love this in a 6-speed manual Challenger. I’d buy that in heart beat.

Sounds pretty good for a twin turbo straight 6!
That is the coolest test rig I've ever seen. Amazing engineering there
should look at the Porsche one, it mocks the exact g forces of tracks
Engine sounds pretty awesome for a 6!!!
The difference between and inline and a V
I’m a big v8 guy, but the in-line 6 has proved itself in performance applications for years. I’m excited to see what happens with this thing
Just test drove a Ram 1500 with SST and simply blew my mind on how smooth and powerful this engine is. I thought my Hemi Ram 1500 was quick. This truck spins the tires from a 40 mph roll. The speedometer moves so fast I had to back off at 85 mph.
Yeah when I looked at videos online the new hurricane engine now have made the ram 1500 the fastest overall truck in it's class again just like ram did when the 5.7 hemi came out back in 2003
@coolsquad7428 If you have time, stop at your local dealer and test drive a 1500 with the turbo 6. I assure you the performance will leave you speechless. It's totally nuts.
The best torture test for consumer engines is the cold weather short tripping test. Start the engine in -20F weather, let it idle for 30 minutes, run it long enough to simulate 1 mile of driving, then shut back off. Let it cool completely down to ambient. Start it back up, 30 more minutes of idling, run it for 1 mile of simulated driving, shut it back down. Repeat this enough to simulate years worth of cold weather short tripping. Then we'll see how well it holds up.
I rather have this than electric.
Anything that came with a Slant Six could be fun with this. Imagine '66 Barracuda set up for the canyons....
The in-line six is the most well-balanced engine ever created so it makes sense. I’m a huge 2jz fan simply because it was a very simple engine design to handle 500 hp from the factory. If I happen to have an engine failure after all the work I just put in my 3.6 L Pentastar wrangler, then I will be Fabing a custom 2jz wrangler
Problem is, that a 2JZ was insanely overbuilt from the factory. This Hurricane engine seems to have had a lot of corners cut on it. Hopefully the H.O. Version will be better.
Still rather have this than a full EV. And should have way more potential than the utterly boring Pentastar V6.
@@iTrinityPlays yeah, Chrysler has had some issues in the past few years. They never fixed the rocker arm issue in the 3.6 for the issue in the hemi‘s. All their engines have ticks unknown problems but if they actually fix the problem then they are admitting fault. Hopefully in the new hurricane engine, they don’t have those issues. But as with any new design, if I do end up buying one, it will be the second or third generation.
@@iTrinityPlays corners cut based on what? Your feelings aren't evidence
so many people crying about losing the V8, i doubt anyone knows the engineering of I6 > V8
Nobody that's crying about losing the V8 cares about the engineering, unless you can engineer the I6 to sound like the V8.
We want v8 sound cz rt 5.7 is not that fast and weight to much and still plp buy it why cz that nice v8 sound
I'd rather my car be fast and sound good with an i6 than just sound good
@@Dr.Spatula who told u i6 turbo sound good as a v8
@@1989purry Plenty out there can tbh. Barra,JZ series,RB series,cummins,om606,B57,turbo TB48s, turbo 1FZ,7mgtes,turbo S52s,turbo M104s,and turbo M50s. They can all sound better than v8s but that just comes down to the person's opinion tbh.
I build cylinder heads and I predict a lot of these to rebuild. Just like the eco boost
This Engine is the only reason I would think about buying a Jeep again. The 6 cyl always needed a turbo. I agree with some that a 4.0 lt straight 6 could have been a better engine, but this is a huge step forward from the sick v6 3.7L
Sick like bad or good? And you talking about the Power-Tech 3.7?
It will be interesting to see what fatal flaws this thing has the first couple of years out. It will take time to perfect.
I think you mean the first 90 days.
For those who didn’t get the memo clearly Dodge stated that the pure combustion Hemi v8 and their hemi powered duo the Charger and Challenger in their hemi forms are getting discontinued. And many ceos and heads of Stellantis stated that both the Challenger and Charger are getting next gen variants, is just the hemi are not gonna powered them
Anyone crying about their 420/485hp hemi being replaced with a lighter 420/540hp engine is wild
Got some familiar traits from the Atlas 4200🤔
Sounds good. Wish they would make a larger displacement version though
Why would you need a bigger displacement when these things will already be pumping out over 500hp from the factory? Besides, the tuning capability is probably going to be nuts as well.
Put a bigger turbo on it. And I'm sure it's going to be a massive tuner platform so there will be stroker cranks for it in a few years
Well they are working on a 1000 HP variant so....
@@MaddJakd I’m looking for larger displacement because Ide like to see this in an HD platform like a ram 2500. Needs to make plenty of torque. But without crazy high revs. And I6’s can be good at that
@toofastnobrakes those already have i6's that do wonders over there.
They're called Cummins, and not-so-distant descendants of the actual Crystler i6 of old lol
*WoW!*
I want to see a test on the 1000hp drag pack variant that dodge makes
Put this in a SLEEK CHARGER WITH AWD and itll sell like hotcakes
It'll sell, just not like hotcakes. Although, could buy one. And swap a Hemi in it, from those rare few years, where Chrysler made a 5.7 Hemi and AWD.
I love the I6 engine. Inline six engines are naturally super smoooooooooth and don’t use balance shafts. If it’s as durable like the old Jeep 4.0 inline 6 the Hurricane should be a winner.
The problem is is that it won’t be because the old 4.0 was a AMC design with their 4.2 overhead valve being as this is dual overhead cam VVT and twin turbo. It won’t have the same reliability. It’ll put out a crap load more power than the old 4.0 but definitely won’t be more reliable because if you look at how much boost the thing is pushing at 550 hp on the hurricane cat2 26 pounds of boost to make 550 hp and they’re anticipating 1000 hp but not disclosing how much boost that’s going to require it’ll be interesting to see how this will turn out
Wow!!!!💪👍👍😁
So this might be just a little late but Im building a 65 plymouth for drag n drive street classes are you guys planning on selling the huricane crate and want some one to test or help develope Im down
So far there is still no ETA on the hurricane crate. Rob Dahm was supposed to have one for roadkill nights but mopar sent him a redeye instead. I see that as an ultimate win.
Will the Hurricane bolt into a Pentastar configuration?
Maybe at best.
So far in the Grand Wagonner, it seems to be bolted to the 8HP variant used for all the eco-deisels.
Not sure if it's a direct fit. Even if it is, I'd imagine the "baby 8HP" for the Pentastar would need some beefing up to handle this things tourqe.
Future project goals lol
Time will tell....
The hemis are made in Mexico to so that doesn't make any sense lol
when are the new dodge cars coming out? Was always a V8 fan but if this is the replacement, so be it.
Pretty sure the Charger Daytona with the TTHi6, comes out in 2025. Right now the only car coming out is the Charger Daytona electric version
torture test ?? yall need to let my son work with yall , he'll torture the hell outta it 🤣
Lol that's something my mom would say too
The hemi can come back but not in a pure gas form. The only option is to make hybrid hemis or borrowed the same hydrogen powered hemi from the specialized hydrogen power Dodge ram
They already have Hybrid Hemis in RAMs
@V8_Diva oh I know that, but still they should of carry that concept with small block hybrid hemis
Chrysler is now a 3rd or 4th level company again. If they get rid of the hemi I don't see any reason to buy their stuff again. I hope they do better with the turbos that ford did.
Not a chance Ford turbo charged 4 cyl been put for years and successfull
@@CoyoteFTW Not from what I hear. The turbos and cam phasers are the first to go on their engines.
@@TheHortond Depends on what you're looking for. If you want to tune say an ST, it's still hell of a motor to squeeze out performance. Never looked at any Ecoboost engines, until I met two guys with 600Whp 4 Cyl Ecoboost.
I was pretty impressed when these guys flew past me at 140 in the rain at night. Made me feel slow doing 110 In my B6 S4.
You can make anything reliable. But I still just don't think Stellantis should kill of the Hemi's. Just make a next gen of the Hemi design.

Great, another Stellantis engine with less metal parts and more plastic parts.
Whole lotta plastic on there😳
Unfortunately that's the norm now expensive BMW cars have lots of plastic parts on the engine.
Planned obsolescence
@@barrymantei7795 Yeah but this thing isn't even close to the Engine that the S55 is. Even the high output version of it. They seem to have purposely cut corners on this engine, and restricted it by using some terrible designs.
BMW isn't the company you should worry about, for their inline 6's. They've been making them for a long time, and kinda are just the gold standard in terms of making power, and going strong with regular maintenance. The sound department? Could be a little better though.
It's fucking wild that y'all are stupid enough to think engines haven't had plastic intake and cooling pipes for decades
whats next, viper with an inline 10 ?
The Viper always had a V10… on the other hand, I have Dodge trucks from the 40’s, 50’s, and 90’s with straight 6’s. I think it’s cool.
it's so frustrating trying to find out information about this engine... little useless drips filter down every few months with no substance. which vehicles is it going to go in? when, if ever, will it reach australia? ah doesn't matter, i don't think any of them will impress like the CX-90 for some time.
Yeah, we're not getting a whole lot of info on them yet. They were supposed to have these ready for the Roadkill nights event for a few media influencers to have swapped into their cars, but if you look at some like Rob Dahm, they had to settle for a Redeye crate instead.
It's only gone into the Wagoneer at the moment but definitely not the performance variant we've been teased with.

@@chriswisenot6888 Oh, you mean all the plastic shit that has been plastic for the last 20 years? Also, a charge pipe isn't "most of the intake"
@@Dr.SpatulaExactly, all that stuff is plastic, including the intake manifold, subject to warpage and cracking like we’ve been seeing for 20 years. One of the reasons why I’m still hanging on to my 2006 Honda accord, intake is all metal! Totally different than the Eco. This thing has serious potential.
Actually looks relatively simple. Should be plenty of room to work on it depending on the vehicle.

The Ford Triton 4.6 and 5.4 handled extended idle vary well. I drove a 15 pass van with the 5.4 and some days we ran that van non stop with the AC on from 6AM to 10pm sitting upto 30 min at a time. Same with the 4.6 in the Crown Vic or Lincoln Town Car might sit idling at an event for hours at a time. Depends on if the engine was made to handle being extended idled. I had an older luxury car and if you left it idling too long with the AC on, the idle would increase to 1100 to help the mechanical fan cool the engine. @FloppyBread
I6 is very well balanced it will idle better than any other configuration.
That whole "common parts" list is dumb.
Nothing customizable about spark plugs and bearing caps.
Smfh.. I wish I wasn't too poor to afford a hemi, I'd make sure to get one before they're gone.
5.7 hemi has been tested for a decade and averages 250,000 miles. Stalantis took over Chrysler and so far no one is impressed. Yes the ram 3500 is a beast and the wagoneer is true luxury but after one year you took out the reliable 5.7 and 6.4 for a engine called hurricane.

The Hemi kinda sucks. Should have kept the magnum and built from there. Especially since it had Hemi pedigree already. But the inline 6 by design is far superior to the v8.
An engine has to launch to be proven. Stellantis has earned their bad reputation. They aren't completely stupid though which suggests they are confident to put their trust in this I6. If not, we would see it as an option against the hemi. High stakes but won't we all look stupid in a few years if this thing is a real winner. 🤔
Y’all saw that right? Stellantis, I’ve been saying for years now Mopar don’t make anything themselves it’s all manufactured in China and slapped with a logo. Stellantis makes the engines
Could you be any more clueless.. Stellantis *IS* the company that owns Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Ram.
