  • Keeping Up Appearances was a British sitcom created and written by Roy Clarke. It originally aired on BBC1 from 1990 to 1995. The central character is an eccentric and snobbish middle class social climber, Hyacinth Bucket (Patricia Routledge), who insists that her surname is pronounced "Bouquet". The show comprised five series and 44 episodes, four of which are Christmas specials. Production ended in 1995 after Routledge decided to move on to other projects.

I were lucky enough to meet Patricia Routledge a few years ago, ,a lovely lady, an incredible career..it was such a privilege to work with her, and we even had a piccie together..one of the memorable nights. I can`t believe she is now 90..It seems the role of Rose was a bit unlucky, both actresses dying younger than some of the other cast members...this video is a great record of those characters, and the people who played them..

One common mistake: English actor, Mary Miller (deceased 2020) is often mistaken for MARY IRENE MILLAR (nee Wetton) who gave us several "belly laughs " as the beautiful "ROSE" who was constantly searching for that one special fella over and over and over again. Sadly, Mary Millar passed away on the 10th of November , 1998 when she was lost to ovarian cancer a the age of only 62. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹

Agreed. I think the "canned laughter sitcom" variety is well and truly dead (for the better in most instances, IMO). I love KUA but I think they pretty much exhausted all avenues well before the final episode of series 5.

Surprised there was never a sequel featuring Sheridan and Tarquin. "Keeping Up Appearances" continues to be one of the funniest shows we have here in America; we watch it constantly and it never grows old. These wonderful characters (thanks to the marvelous actors) live on forever!

    • @kamion53

I think the strong point of Sheridan and Tarquin was that they were off stage/off camera characters.
it left a lot to the imagination and also that some facts wre obvious to everyone but never mentioned.
bringing them to the flesh would likely have been disapointing

@@kamion53 Yes, I agree would have been disappointing in the original series having these two show up, but creating a new show based on these two characters would be quite a different creative challenge. It would have little to do with the original.
