Not sure if this will be seen, but when I need to remove protruding metal objects from wood like that, I found that heating up the metal quite a lot and then twisting it around opens up the hole just enough to pull it out. Nice work!

Making a round table with a leaf that folds down along where some of those cookies broke would be so cool. So it could be either a full "circle" or a semicircle

If there is no feasible way for a Jordan makes series, any chance of a Jordan narrates, I don’t know why but imagining him narrating what’s going on seams hilarious to me.

I have a GORGEOUS 5-6” thick, 40” wide western red cedar round finished as a table. WRC has signature deep undulating vertical ‘cuts’ in the perimeter resulting from the growth process of the exterior of the tree. It’s the coolest piece of furniture we have.

Id like to see you cut your cookies thicker than I saw in the video. For that large of a round, a thicker slab is more to scale. My opinion of course:

We are working on a sassafras cookie now - surrounded by epoxy and adding bow ties. Really cool look. Also adding 2 strips of c-channel to the bottom and setting it on hairpin legs. I have been leery of cookies as well but that is what the customer wants. Been a cool project. Also love the name on the mill.

sass was once used to flavor root beer. in high doses, it causes neurological damage that's why it's not used anymore. if you have the leaves high-end bars buy them since they are great for certain cocktails. but if you can't figure out what to do with those cookies ill buy them from you. also don't use water on cookies. the water makes drying hellacious and they will cup. alcohol will show you the grain appearance and evaporate off quick so as to not over-saturate the grain leading to potato chipping.

  • @damondiehl5637

I've been trying to do this with smaller pieces. I'm having trouble locking them down. I welded some angle iron together and cut teeth into them and drilled some holes so I can hammer them into the wood and then screw them down to the planks I have laying on the bunkers. It's still not enough. When the chunk rips out of the holders it's pretty violent. I've got to unscrew the guide bearing and reset it as the cookie hit it and twisted it down so it touches the blade. I'm thinking of adding a couple attachment points so I can loop a cable from a coma-along around the block so I can ratchet it down and hold it against the teeth more.
I cut cookies from a double ash stump with my Alaskan mill, but didn't put the cookies inside after milling and they all rotted out. Another learning experience.

John, cookies are the best! I’m local in Pittsburgh also, and I cut a bunch of sycamore and oak last year when a storm blew through Edgewood. They are finally dry and im ready to pour some epoxy in the first one in the next day or so. Since then I’ve gotten some more oak and some mystery wood ( with a lot of inclusions and rot.) Never underestimate the rot, with some penetrating epoxy, it will look really cool.
I am most looking forward to cutting the maple I have, the larger chunks have awesome striping and spalting. They will make some sweet coffee tables!
The one piece of maple is 5’ round, this is a great size for kitchen tables!
Next week I am getting some more 4-5’ diameter oak. It should be a good weekend next week, Steeler game Saturday, Metallica on Sunday, and more trees on Monday!

As i saw that piece of metal i was reminded about a job i had in a cnc shop. i was the sawing guy. fun fact, when sawing steel sometimes there are little pieces of carbide in the steel, especially in cheap imported steel, when they used subpar material at the forgery, and it literally can rip the teeth of the blade if you hit one. so no matter what it is you're sawing, a small piece of foreign material in the right spot can ruin your day. 😆

Definately team cookie here, the coolest thing I've made was from an awesome, twisted walnut cookie.. On the milling, hitting metal is obviously a blade killer, but in general it seems leaving a bunch of cookies/slabs stacked while you cut again lower would massively increase the friction load on the blade, increasing heat and decreasing life of the blade. The extra weight would be trying to close the kerf and pinch the blade, removing each cut piece would make for less load on the saw and longer blade life... 👍

Hey John I have a question for ya, when mixing the epoxy stuff that yall have to mix with a drill for 5 minutes or whatever it is (Sorry I can't remember) is it possible to use the drill press? Like put the mixing paddle thingy ma jig in the drill press and put the bucket on the drill table, lowered down? (If anyone has suggested this or anything I do apologize. )

    • @titaniadioxide6133
      @titaniadioxide6133 2 роки тому +1

Probably wouldn’t work as well. When you’re using the handheld drill you’re scraping the corners, bottom, and sides as you mix, or at least move around in the bucket.
On the drill press, you’d need to move the bucket instead of the drill, which is much more difficult.
Probably safer and more feasible to get a $30 Harbor Freight drill to use for epoxy mixing than to try to mix on the drill press.

Best one I found in a log was a ceramic insulator. Talk about taking the teeth off a blade 😬😂

Did you just come up with another slogan for a tee shirt? "Watch me play with my wood!" I'll buy that and take a small percentage say .50 per shirt. Thanks John!

The unidentified metal thing looks a lot like a "Garage Hook" or "Bike Hook". Grab a vice grips and try to thread it back instead of pulling/prying. Should come right out.

I apologize in advance for the stupid question, but why do you spray the wood with water after you cut it?

To see the grain patterns. Makes it easier to see, especially for a video. I’d also recommend watching one of Matt Cremona’s milling vids. He has a separate but funny way of doing it, haha.
