    Buddy I’m 32 years in. I’ve been in your situation for 20 + years. Shops whether independent or major aftermarket or any dealerships do not want to pay for diagnosing! It’s sad! Basically they want you to bang out 60 hrs a week and magically diagnosing everything in an hour or less! Again I’ve been experiencing this for 20+ years! Not to be a downer but it’s not going to change!

      The shops don’t want to pay PERIOD. You and I make some bread and the other 99% don’t make squat generally speaking. I’m 43 years old been doing this for 26 years and zero has changed. Matter of fact my father and uncle had a shop in the 80s with rate of $50 per hour.They made more money per year in the 80’s than my uncle does now. Fucked up situation this industry in

    I been working in a dealer shop as a technician for over a year now. Saw problems in my first week there. Cody your the man. I really learn alot from your channel videos. I do not know if getting into automotive was a bad idea for me but hoping all my efforts to learn is not a waste. I do notice the labor times are dropping now days especially certain brands and warranty labor times are not good at all.

    It's been 3.5yrs for me and it's been as busy as I could ask for. Just like any other job it has its days, some days are great you do well, things go well, some days are tough, you don't make what you want but overall I think it's worth it
    For the first year it will be alil tough getting rolling but you are starting with alot more tools and equipment then I did and you know how much difference it makes having proper tooling. Make sure all your clients are aware, treat them great and they will do the same for you.
    Congrats and hope the best for you guys.

      Would love to Cody but at the moment as you know not a good time to travel. But at the moment it has been good watching your videos and trying to learn more as I don’t know how to use a scope or even a scan tool as when I did my trade I did it at the dealership and they didn’t tech me s#### I have learnt most things by leaving the dealer and helping mates where I can. If I don’t know the answer I ring a mate to help me that’s about the only good thing about living here mates help mates. I have left the tech world and for the the past 10 years I have been doing 4wd accessory fitting but still try and keep up with the tech world where I can to help with my current job.

  • @northpostman
    @northpostman 3 роки тому

    Hi Cody, great video. I was a tech for 30 years, general and driveability. Never at a dealership, all at aftermarket shops. Much like yourself, I hung parts for about half of that time, and spent the last 15 years doing driveability. I had more than my share of headbutting with the service manager over proper diagnosing versus the parts cannon. The problem is that most shop owners and service managers don't want you to diagnose, they just want profits and part sales. I'm now finishing my career as a college professor teaching electrical diagnosis and driveability diagnosis. I'm still butting heads, but now it's with other professors that were parts changers in the trade, and think my teaching students scope use and proper diagnostic techniques is a waste of time. The worst of the bunch are former dealer techs., everything with them is get the code, follow the trouble tree and then throw a part at it, or call tech. line. I always get asked why I push wiring diagram analysis so hard and I am always amazed at the reaction when I say "because that's the only way to properly diagnose a vehicle". I become even more popular when I say; "if your not verifying with a lab scope, you are guessing". I get emails from former students that are discouraged because I motivated them to become good techs, and the shop they work at won't let them diagnose anything. I actually had a student tell me he got fired for testing a coil with a scope instead of just calling all plugs and coils for a misfire. This is by far the most unprofessional profession in the world. I love seeing young techs like yourself really embracing the proper diagnostic process and using knowledge and testing to fix cars properly. I really think that the direction you are taking is the right one, I have a friend became a mobile diagnostic tech and it really re-ignited his passion for what he does. Good luck, I really look forward to seeing how you make out on this new journey.

    • @codysautodiagnosticsprogra8706
      @codysautodiagnosticsprogra8706  3 роки тому

      This is an absolutely great story but also sad about the techs you mentioned. Io agree 💯 about hanging parts and not properly diagnosing a vehicle. It’s frustrating to say the least and one reason I went on my own.

    • @jW-xz7sr
      @jW-xz7sr 3 роки тому

      I can totally relate. I work with large mobile equipment. Last week a system failed just prior to a demonstration. I watched eight people come in from every angle throwing parts and by-passing switches and circuits in a mad panic.
      If only one person had used even a basic troubleshooting flow chart and tests, it would have been repaired with in minutes. Every person in this mob wanted to be to the part changing hero. Each with there own idea of what it most likely was. So that one person with analytical thinking skills was pushed to the sideline while the idiots hacked away. My jaw was on the ground. Very few people elevate to what I would consider master level diagnostician. Its intimidating and therefore must be deemed useless. It’s all about $ , No one cares about talent. That’s why hanging struts pay more then the guy who’s done that for 10years and moved on to diagnostics, not to mention bought the gear to do it. The shop owner certainly won’t do it. Your only useful if you do it for free. It not just the auto industry it’s everywhere. People want the easy button and don’t want to think or pay for its creation. One hour of troubleshooting for a 5 minute repair that cost 5 cent. They will gladly pay you your 5 cents not for Oscilloscope and training that it took to make it happen. Very frustrating.

    The major problem will hit shops hard if they dont change, technology is key to understanding the modern car, e.g. the modern car has similar technology to an F15 fighter jet, you need highly skilled technicians/engineers e.g. a mechanic who understands electronics, databus systems, electronic diagnostic test equipment and who also has the "knowledge" is key. Flat rate may have it's place but Cody your level is to that of an electronics engineer with a solid mechanical background, this level needs to be a permanent well paid salaried staff, good luck with your new venture, oh Happy New Year

    It’s hard I’m a drivability guy too and the flare rate kills me luckly the shop im at now has a guarantee and that’s great but it’s like I’m at a point in my life where we’re tired of renting now I basically told my manger I need suspension work to save up money. Flare rate is great for suspension and breaks and stuff it’s terrible for drivability and heavy line and engine tear down and stuff. Good luck to you buddy good luck owning a business seems to be the only want to be able to do the diagnostic that makes us happy to do, I also have aspirations to open a shop in a couple years

      I'm 27 years old everything you said in the video is exactly spot on. my girl feels exactly the way your girl feels. I feel exactly the same towards independent shops. the sad thing is that we have a bunch of kids rolling into UTI thinking they're going to get into a good field. Not knowing all the other b******* that comes with being a technician. You'll be lucky to find a good shop because I sure haven't, either the pay is good but the management sucks or the pay is really low and I'm being overworked. We seriously need to put a stop to this . It's seriously not fair that we choose a good career path and end up getting treated like crap at every job we go to.
