The flat rate pay system rewards ineptitude. Cody is spot on. The better and more experienced a technician becomes the harder it becomes to maintain high shop hours. I have experienced the same, it gets to a point where a diagnostic technician feels abused. He gets handed all the intermittent turds and major problem cars whereas the B techs lap up all the gravy. At the end of the week Mr. Diag gets a pay cut for being the better technician. I think a salary with a productivity bonus might really be a great alternative to flat rate. But if shop owners are swayed to go this direction they would have to understand that you have to pay an A technician accordingly. Maybe 70k or 80k per year to start with opportunites to make bonuses on top of that. 30k to 40k won't get them in the door.

I’m doing both. I tested the waters out here in Phoenix. Promoting Diag seems to put me ahead of the curve. A lot of ball joint busters out here. I was constantly planning for nmaiing Phoenix my home but, I can’t compete with the Californians in the housing market.
I found you when I got a uscope. Good stuff. If that scope had more channels I would never put it down.
I’m listening to this and I feel you and have may have worked for the same company. You don’t have to say names. But was this expanding company Tuscon Based and buying shops up? I’m from the Midwest I have not been impressed with any of the shops out in Phoenix.

At 40 minutes when those guys are talking about 3 cars a day per tech I almost fell over! My current shop is probably 5-6 cars per day per tech for 3 techs.. but I would say it’s a safe bet our average RO is half of theirs! I’d rather work on three cars with higher average RO

Its a common misconception that a shop needs more cars! It increases liability, work load on everyone and stresses everyone out! There's simply no need for it!

As you know I am not in the auto repair business but have an interest in all things "automotive". Plus the reason I enjoy UA-cam so much is that I find people like you who are passionate about their craft. I enjoyed this conversation Cody. It brought me much appreciated understanding of the frustrations and triumphs of being in the automotive repair industry.

Just turn into Asog and this episode really hit hard, I agree that flat rate rewards inexperience, I work for dealers 4total the last 26 years and always been interested in improving myself fighting with management to send me to training an all that for what ? For them to tell me that I’m very slow and never acknowledge the fact that every horror story vehicle comes to me. Flat rate is dead at the dealership level thank you for help me with this episode to figure the rest of my future

Good podcast.. just found you guys recently with the one with Mario Rojas, then saw this one pop up. There is SO much that you guys discuss that are issues that I’m currently dealing with at my shop/this time in my career. I remember bringing up vision to my boss and he cut me off about 2 seconds into the sentence and laughed at me. I’m trying to transition into from a mechanic to a diagnostician but it’s hard to find training and being able to pay for it out of pocket when you don’t have a shop that’s willing to help. I’m sure there are good shops out there, like you guys said, but how do you find them is my question.

They training deal is spot on. When I worked for Honda they paid guys $10 a module. There are like 330 modules. It takes 8 months to do those modules m-f 2-3 modules a night. That’s $3300 to basically become a Honda Master tech. I’m the one who took advantage of it. It’s helped a lot. I always go to the GM, and Ford classes not matter how basic they are you can learn something. From it, and Napa is who we have around STL. I always went it was free why not.
But, I hate the dark of this industry. My last job it was expected that I hold the hand of a guy who goes home and smokes weed and play soccer. I told the kid to fucking get lost and sink. Apparently I’m a the asshole now. Fucking ridiculous. I spend 15 years getting good and it expected I hold this kids hand and stay late to flag my hours.

Hey Cody got another random question lol
But if I have a gdi and I have oil on spark plugs what does that mean? Piston rings? I’m used to tube seals and valve covers lol

    • @codysautodiagnosticsprogra8706
      @codysautodiagnosticsprogra8706  3 роки тому +2

I would look into the pcv system. Not saying the ring glands don’t go bad but using correct oil is huge on these.

  • @gtautomotive22

That question though. “ Is it the money”. Lol thats why im flat rate so the answer is YES. Sadly when they have you as a “driveability”guy i get pulled from good jobs that will make my time from the diagnostics and give them to another tech. Everytime they do that i make less hours. That sucks for me

I recently brought my VW for a bad rt. front abs sensor. (warranty) While waiting around I overheard the service advisor talking to a customer on speaker phone. Technician in attendance.(we need 3 hours for abs diag, 3 hours for tpms, 3hours for adaptive cruise and several items I didn"t catch. It will be $6000 to fix car. I thought it was my car,I had all those warning lights on also.

  • @gtautomotive22

I liked the comment you made about the 45 min diag and they only want to pay gor 1 hour instead of 3. While you have to use thousands of dollars of equipment and years of knowledge and previous diagnostics where your ass beat until you finally got it. Ive had those every now and then. I now play it off until they leave the area then make my estimates. Lol sometimes i have to play their game too. 👍🏽😂

Great interview brother! Awesome to hear it from different perspectives. No question that diagnostics is way undervalued by our industry and as a result its customers. Hard to expect the customer to value the diagnostician when the shop doesn't.
