    It's kind of wild that J. Larry Carroll went from this almost immediately into his decade of writing for cartoons before moving into live action TV shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation and Diagnosis Murder. That's a WEIRD career arc.

    • @Madbandit77
      @Madbandit77 Рік тому +5

      Not really. Some TV writers have gotten their start writing for animated TV, pre-Simpsons. Chuck Lorre, Paul Haggis, Mark Scott Zicree and the late Sam Simon (he worked at Filmation and HATED the experience).
      Ron Friedman did the opposite after working on stuff produced by Norman Lear, Garry Marshall, Aaron Spelling and Glen Larson and brought quality to stuff like G.I. Joe and Transformers.

    Fujioka actually voiced Ryo's father in the 1st Shenmue game. Fujioka is like the Japanese Chuck Norris but more bad ass and very friendly. He is also a real life martial arts expert and his movie and TV career is amazing playing a hard boiled detective, a cyborg riding super hero and the champion of the Sega Saturn. You should see his commmericals on youtube, it is both fun and bad ass for someone in his 70s. His eldest son Maido also played as the son of Segata Sanshiro for Sega and Kamen Rider Ichigo in a short role in Kamen Rider Beyond Generations Movie.

    That building isn't a water reclamation plant, it's the headquarters of a mortgage company (although that building has housed many companies over the years). It has served as a futuristic exterior for many, many productions, notably as the "San Angeles Police Department" in "Demolition Man," (when it was GTE's headquarters) and more recently as a science lab on "The Orville".
    It's located at 1 Baxter Way in Thousand Oaks, CA.

I stopped watching this a few minutes in because something within my very soul said "nah, I need to see this" and went and got it off Uncle Torrence. I watched it last night drunk because that’s what I do on a Friday night before coming back and watching this video in full. Maybe could be considered (excuse the pun) ahead of it time?! Taking something from a different time. Like a Soldier. A Ninja. Or indeed a Samurai, and see what would happen?! Is a really interesting concept! Probably why it was an oddity back then? 🤔. The cinematography for ancient Japan at the beginning is beautifully shot! It has some influences of YOJIMBO about it. In certain shots. One of my favourite Ninja type of 80’s movies! Great stuff! 😊👍

Those guys are absolutely nuts, especially if you have a look at some of the behind the scenes footage you can find on youtube. This movie has my all time most awesome martial arts kick in any movie i've seen and is a highly entertaining movie once it gets going. The fight scenes almost hurt to watch, when you see how they actually hit the shit out of each other (with real burning logs).

    Shame this was Carroll's only time to direct. I've always thought this film's direction, cinematography, and overall look was really tight. The action was easy to follow, there is not an abundance of weird blocking issues, and some of the perspective shots of just featuring fairly ordinary interaction look terrific. Like the clip highlighted when the female lead returns the clothing and swords back to Yoshimitsu. The shot angled upward towards the protagonist looked great and broke up the dull shot-reverse-shot that was especially common for dialogue sequences on these lower budget films of the era. Carroll didn't seem to have much to work with considering the script and I would have really liked to have seen what he was capable of with a few more films under his belt.
