The early 2000s were really not a good time for action movies due to a lot of studios trying to copy The Matrix. This movie is a prime example.
Man.... I fucking bought into the hype of EVERY movie during that Era, but I was too young for my mom to let me watch it lol(born in 94)
This movie, and "Cradle 2 tha grave" are the two that I can VIVIDLY remember the trailers for, and have always been meaning to get around to watching as an adult lol

I watched this film years ago and two things stuck with me.
1. The insane amount of RANDOM slow-mo

When this movie came out on video, my mom rented it and my brother made fun of it the whole time. It was hilarious. But a couple months later, my mom forgot we already saw it and rented it again! Didn't leave much of an impact I guess.
I don't know why but I've been laughing at this for a while now. My dad is the same, he can't remember a movie he saw yesterday lol
My mother did that with Toejam and Earl when I was a kid.
She must've rented it like, 3 or 4 times because that name is just so catching, yet she didn't play games so she never remembered actually renting it for us. XD

The dumbest part of this movie is that the FBI has any sort of jurisdiction in Vancouver.

@@danielfonville1840 It was pretty impressive. Ray Park's martial arts experience, body language and facial expression provided a lot. But Peter Serafinowicz was the voice dubbed over Ray Park's lines. They joked during interviews that Ray park was physically intimidating but the moment he opened his mouth, his tiny voice would make people laugh.
Darth Maul was definitely terrifying. And the fact that he essentially doesn’t say a word throughout the entire film (except for that phrase at the beginning) made him even scarier. I still remember the scene when he walks from side to side and grins after killing Qui-Gon.
Lucy Liu commented that during the filming of this movie she often had no idea what was going on. She remembers being told to run a lot , having no idea why she was running or at what point in the story it was. She herself would joke about Ecks vs. Sever being the worst movie ever made. Your video is the most I've ever seen of it and I'm beginning to understand why.

Agent Sever was originally written to be played by a man. The film's original stars were Wesley Snipes and Jet Li, then Vin Diesel and Sylvester Stallone.
I'm glad they did get Vin and put him in a black wig!

There were two GBA games! I had the original, just called Ecks vs. Sever, which was released before the movie and based on an early script. The Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever version came out along with the movie. I have not played the latter.

Haha I love how so many movies are filmed in Vancouver but passed off as some other city, and this one is one of the few that actually is set in Vancouver but it's terrible. Sorry Vancouver.

It turns out the GBA game, based on an early version of the script, actually explains both the pills scene *and* "Why is FBI dude using Ecks over literally any current FBI agent?" There Ecks turned to drugs after the "death" of his wife and son (already born in that version, and their survival is so tacked on it could have just been cut entirely), and since his official retirement the FBI dude has regularly been using him as a deniable, expendable agent in exchange for supporting his habit. This also in turn explains why an FBI agent is getting involved in spy plots in the first place.
Why were these cut from the movie? Don't know! GBA plot still isn't *good* ("You killed a bunch of innocent law enforcement, but the bad guy was behind everything so you're free to go!") but it can be understood as a series of events. The movie version doesn't even have that.
The songs in this movie sound like they remixed a yoko ono album.

I attended Comic Con in San Diego back in 2002 and remember watching the panel discussion of this movie. It was just Lucy Liu and Ray Park on stage trying to hype a film that seemed very uninteresting even to them. Banderas had "other commitments." At least Lucy was nice to look at, but I wish Talisa Soto had been there. After it was done, I recall looking at my brother next to me and we both just shrugged our shoulders. A year later I learned what a disaster this was when I watched it on cable. Shockingly bad. Great vid Mark.

I believe it's a travesty that this gentleman, Mark, only has a hundred thousand subscribers. He should have well over a million. His content is that good and unlike a lot of UA-camrs out there, he actually does his research before releasing his content

Okay the blowing up the car part is actually the only part that DOES make sense. The second car was blown up to make Ecks think his WIFE had also similarly died (in case he survived, i assume?), and so he wouldn't come looking for her, i guess. That's an unreasonable contingency to plan for, but at least Gant is thorough, i guess...

That roof top fight scene feels like it's mostly the rehearsal that got filmed, then Producers said to cut it, so they never finished shooting, so when Producers said to add it in after a screening they just took what they could out of the rehearsal footage where several blows clearly miss by a foot and used weird slo-mo and stares to fill out the time.
Also, someone is firing a high powered machine gun and Ecks walks towards the fire to pick up his handgun first? BS.

I always appreciate the effort you put into these reviews, they're hilarious and almost relaxing entertainment. This movie specifically I'd completely forgotten about but I remember thinking the name of it was the dumbest thing I'd ever heard, and after that I never heard about it again, until now. I just don't know why they chose that name. I can't imagine Lethal Weapon: Riggs VS Murtaugh or Casino Royale: Bond VS Lechief
Fun fact: This boring-ass movie had not one, but two video game tie-ins. The first (Ecks Vs. Sever) was a first-person shooter for the Gameboy Advance and it garnered good reviews. It was based on an early draft of the script and due to the film's pre-production hang-ups, the game came out before the movie. The second game, Ballistic: Ecks Vs. Sever, came out after the film's release and followed closer to the film's plot. It got decidedly less-positive reviews.
This movie's color palette and overall look/design is extremely boring and flat not to mention that atrocious moaning soundtrack.

Dune is a bit of a mess due to it being cut to ribbons (and well it is David Lynch too), but its well watchable, and follows the story fairly well. Would still love to see a good remake of it now, its a tremendous book and deserves justice on the big screen.
Yeah heard he was doing it, and after the supposedly great work he has done on the Bladerunner sequel, I hope he can do it the way he wants to. If he can, we could finally have a Dune screen version that works and truly fills out that epic universe.

When this movie came out in 2002, it was plastered everywhere on billboards, newspaper feature, TV ads, etc. I thought it was gonna be a cool badass movie just looking at the poster, it’s got Lucy Liu from Kill Bill and Antonio Banderas from Mask of Zorro even… but for some strange unexplained reason I didn’t feel compelled to watch it. Now I know why and good thing I passed it.

how did youget through this review without once mentioning the names lucy liu and antonio banderas? Is that intentional? I would have thought the star cast, production value and cinematic release would be relevant, given how a lot of your reviews are for straight to video crap starring unknowns.

Their celebrity status and the production value of the movie isn't a factor in how bad or good it is. That's kind of the point.

It was both a bad and good time around the 2000s because we had so many resources to make anything but everyone kept copying the same 3 or 4 films.
Some movies can't be bothered with details.
It's always a good day, when you upload. You actually tuned a shitty day into a good one, for me.
I love the fact that just before those cars explode that you can clearly see that it's raining but no one appears to be getting wet. Also, IMDB says that the director is "Wych Kaosayananda (as Kaos)". Kaos is VERY appropriate for his direction.
The worst part of this movie is its regular bad. So bland you'll feel sorry for wasting your time but won't be able to adequately explain to friends just how terrible it was.
If it were much worse you could laugh at it and talk about it with other people, and laugh again. But its not in that super bad territory that makes it fun to look back on years later.

Another thing that always bugs me (as if it's the only thing) is how could ecks hack into the DIA server to get info of sever when the DIA had literally no idea who she was in the first place? Did they just put up some files in a day or something?

My major takeaway from this is that Pitbull, Mr. Worldwide himself, makes a cameo here portraying Vin Diesel.
9:12 The movie had a very, very messy post-production. The original editor and composer were both fired, and the director was locked out of the Final Cut. He hasn’t worked in the US since, and even said in a 2014 interview that he’s never seen the Final Cut of the film in its entirety. On a podcast from earlier this year, he also heavily implied that the studio fraudulently inflated his the budget for a tax write-off (which the studio WAS actually convicted for doing on another movie, in 2007).
You should do Death note, not only is it a disgrace to the original anime, but even as a stand alone movie it fails in almost every way

I have to wonder if the reason they called Parks' Character "Prince of Darkness" is just a very on-the-nose way of referencing that he played Darth Maul in Episode 1. Like, he _was_ actually the Prince (Apprentice) of Darkness (Sidious) in that movie.
