I was here at that concert! Only time I ever saw Van Halen. I think Roth twisted his ankle and went off stage for a little while, probably to get a steroid shot so he could walk back out. He didn't do anything like his usual gymnastics for the rest of the show. A few months later I was at Sammy Hagar's I can't drive 55 concert on his birthday also here at Cobo. It was on October 12, 1984. He was celebrating big time at that concert. It was a couple nights before the Detroit Tigers won the world Series against the Padre's. Detroit was crazy fun on those nights. He kept announcing the score and we sang Happy Birthday to him. I'll never forget 1984, it was the best! Man, Michael Anthony was such a huge part to VH. Who ever says bass players should just stand there and play bass, have never seen Mad Anthony Bassman in action 🤘
He played the bass player cliche to a T --- slink into the background and let the egomaniac lead singer and guitarist grab all the attention --- but in the meantime, hold down a funky rhythm and chug a lot of Jack !!
I heard him sing lead on the (ugh) VH3 tour. He played bass and took lead vocals on "Somebody Get Me a Doctor", and nailed it. I said they should just like Mike sing, and be a three-piece.
I wish they would have video' d the entire concert like that, the camera right on stage with them. Really gives the perspective of the band and what its really like on stage. Those early VH concerts were just giant massive parties.
